By being not evenly remotely accurate to the characters looks or having any key throw backs to the original toy (mini hot rod, tank treads, bonnetted truck, car carriers etc). The smaller figure didnt even need to transform into anything so they could have focused on the truck/trailer -the extensive retooling on the smaller figure was pretty much wasted and misguided just to show Convoy powers up to only kinda look like Star Convoy in bot mode from groin upwards. Even Star convoys chest windows are the wrong shape.
I think you misunderstood what the figure represents and what Takara Tomy was trying to achieve. It isn't really Star Convoy. It's an Optimus Prime/Convoy figure with a Star Convoy-like power up, but not actually Star Convoy. This was made clear in his accompanying comics well before his release. I have a reissue Star Convoy and I think the Selects figure did a fantastic job of capturing his bot mode. It hasn't left my desk since his release.
And no matter how you feel about the figure the work put into it was nothing short of extensive just as it has been with King Poseidon, Super Megatron, and God Neptune (who has further retooling). I don't expect anything less from Volcanicus, it just wouldn't fit their track record.

Maybe not.

They could come up with entirely new names. But for the Kre-O toys, there were 4 all new original combiners that were made up of various beasts/dinos after the first 9 were based on ones form the original series.(* I know some of these names have been used by other characters as well, but some are original)
Grimstone
(Crackback, Iquanox, Ironeye, Mollox)
Lazerbolt
(Bullhorn, Floodgate, Freezeout, Roadhound)
Obsidian
(Bullwark, Freefall, Hemocron, Stronghorn)
&
Volcanicon (Most likely inspired the name of Volcanicus)
(Farside, Liftoff, Lugmutt, Power Surge)

Why is that head sculpt so familiar though?
Dark Starscream wrote:
4) I understand that Volcanicus's head is different than DinoKing's, but that didn't stop Hasbro from using the Superion head for Computron for cost-saving. I know that Takara has usually been more faithful to G1, but times are hard, Takara was struggling even before COVID, and they might go for the cash grab with the few thousand people that would even want a Dinoking.
Dark Starscream wrote:The tooling exists, so one way or another, we're getting a Dinoking.
ZeroWolf wrote:Problem is, dinoking is a 6 member gestalt...there was only 5 sets of eyes teased, that and I don't think Takara would update Dinoking unless they did it properly, meaning all 6 members being used, and two forming the torso. Things like the guns on snarl and wildfly as the alternate swoop head would be okay for Hasbro (example, their Leokaiser), Takara? Nope, not good enough.

Didn't Red Alert come with that gun?

Yes, but that's not new information.
Moonshot wrote:Speaking of that Armada Prime they showed way back, Im not wanting it for actual Optimus Prime. I hope, and expect, they will release a Nemesis repaint. That is the one I am waiting for. All these years I havent bought any of the Nemesis/Scourge/Black Convoys because I was waiting on a updated Armada Prime one. But who knows, they have said nothing since its original showing that I remember. I am super pumped to finally get Super Megs though.
