Sucks to be her...

Maybe she should have just used her phone or computer to show her brother a trailer, but where in the world can you find those on the internet? [/sarcasm]

I mean c'mon jail time for 20 secs of movie, which you can get almost anywhere? Not too smart there.

yeee, thats pretty dumb. if they are so concerned if we see parts of it without going to see the movie, then take off every clip on the internet and all the trailers. but then..we wont see the movie.

Well, yeah, he/she was biased, and didn't even really care to mention the other side of the story...why is she doing it? Thrills? Showing off? AS I mentioned there were plenty of legal ways for her to go about this.

Big oopsies to her.

Ouch.

BTW, is it alright to watch "illegal" copies of said movies? Is this law different in every country?

Well, no it's not legal to buy them, but I'm not sure what the exavt law is.

In canada it seems to be a very borderline legal. something to do with royalties paid when you buy media. Apparently there was a court case where someone was charged with piracy that the judge threw out. SOmething along the lines the companny can't have it both ways... but don't quote me on it.

It all depends if the Movie theater wts to press charges........Piracy can be jailed for for te years and up to 250 000$ fines. In different countries its the same, you can buy pirated movies, but you get caught its a felony. And its the FBI (federal Beaurau of Investigations) not state thatdoes the catching, so if you get caught you are not going to state Prison, yo are going to federal prison, which is much much worse.

Thing is Piracy is only what it is today thanks to the internet.
Each and every person/Company that makes/sells/owns a VCR is guilty of Piracy but theres only a problem with it now because the money men have realised that now the process has been accellerated they might lose money.
(Now we can get the movie a couple of days after release and so may not go to the cinema instead of going to see it at the cinema and then taping it off TV a couple of years down the line)
Notice even PPV sports events (such as the WWE) now have piracy warnings from taping with a VCR now theyve decided to sell these events as DVD specials.

kinda stupid how far gone these protection laws have gotten. Next thing you know they'll bew fining you thousands because your home video had a seinfield episode in the backround :P . I personally don't think a 20sec clip would deserve that but it's was a risk that was taken and she should have known better then to test the system :P

Well it is illegal to record, copy, distribute and/or sell copyrighted material.
Sure she was over-punished, and made an example of, but that's probably because the authorities struggle to catch any of the people who do this kind of thing professionally, so they have to make an example of the small fish.

It probably wont be too long before the studios get their way, and watching illegal copies (knowingly or not) will be illegal as well.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.

In the uk, I don't think there is a limit as to how much they can fine you.

Are you kidding?

How is she being criminal in this?

There are 10 minute clips posted online and this was 20 seconds

I agree with the blogger in this

Up to a year in prison?

Aren't prisons overcrowded with REAL criminals?

I agree. I fail to see how jail time is either warrented or just in this case. In fact it's unjust overkill just to make an example. If they wanted to punisher her in a way that fit the crime a fine and community service would have been more than enough.
