2016 Generations Platinum sets

Postby william-james88 » Sun Dec 13, 2015 10:28 pm

Motto: "'till All Are One"
Fellow Seibertronian Decepticon Sunstorm made us aware of a post from TFW Member Novabeam10 who wrote the following:
Novabeam10 wrote:my friend at TRU here in Canada fed me a bit of information that may interest any combiner wars lover out there. Apparently TRU canada has a listing for the fans built combiner in their system alongside listings for Menasor/superion sets plus a platinum planet of Junk set. All have no orders as of yet so this may just be placeholders on online only stock
The SKU's and canadian retail pricing are as follows
Fan built combiner 778971 149.99
Menasor 778969 149.99
Superion 778966 149.99
Planet of Junk Platinum set 736239 109.99

This confirms that Toysrus will be distributing these boxsets in Canada (which may not be the case in the US since distribution has been different in the past). Judging from the Canadian prices, this would seem to be box sets which allude to the following price ranges for their retail release in the US:

Victorion would be between 100-120$ US
G2 Menasor would be between 100-120$ US
G2 Superion would be between 100-120$ US
Platinum Planet of Junk set would be about 80$ US

This last one is the most interesting since it is a new set that none of us were aware of yet. Hasbro had alluded to more G1 reissue sets coming out recently and this could be a reissue of sorts. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the movie and the first time we visited the Planet of Junk so it may be a set of G1 toys related to this planet or that scene in the film. It may also simply be a reissue of the various editions of the Reveal the Shield Wreck Gar mold since the purpose of that figure was to be able to accommodate another figure to ride it, a feature that lends itself nicely to a release of multiple figures.

Tell us what you would hope this set to be and let the speculation begin!

I would buy that, I always loved their fighting style in the movie (not to mention the choice of music to play during their sequence ;) )

We get along well so it gives me no pleasure to crush your dreams with this simple notion: if the box set was also a combiner, it would be the same price as the others ;)

Possibly, but if it was 4 copies of the same mold, it might have a lower cost - knowing hasbro, they wouldn't, but it could've.

$80.00 US seems steep for a reissue of G1 Wreck-Gar, though he was a bigger figure, right? I don't think any other Junkions were made in G1, but there is the eHobby exclusive Detritus, a repaint of G1 Hound. Detritus is supposedly a Decepticon aligned Junkion, so it would give Wreck-Gar a possible foil for a "versus" sort of motif.

He wouldn't be the only one in the set though, they would release him with another autobot who met him in the movie. Maybe magnus, since the junkions rebuilt him and that mold is up and ready for a reissue.

Could be a re-issue of the Three different head Junkions from "classics" era molds.

It could well be this... but Platinum lately has seen a slew of older figures.

Please... please... let this be just two G1 Wreck-Gars in funky colours

The title sounds like another possible theme set like the Blaster/Perceptor Intel Ops set. I'm thinking a movie themed G1 reissue set, maybe Wreck-Gar, Hot Rod, and Kup?

There is already the rumour of a Hot Rod and Galvatron Platinum set so I think this would be an accompaniment to that and not have hot rod.

I would think it would be Wreck-Gar and Springer since they interacted the most in the movie. The original commercial even featured both of them.

Conversely, they could do a Quintessa set with Gnaw, Hot Rod and Kup.

It would be great if this set included a re-issue G1 Wreck-Gar along with the CHUG version like the Takara Chronicle sets. For the price, a second, or even third Junkion would be welcome. Or, perhaps it will be an "Evolution of Wreck-Gar" type of thing and also include the Animated version, I wonder?

While I don think it is likely, an evolution of wreck gar set with the animated mold would be my pie in the sky hope for this set.

Is there any proof that "Platinum" means the Planet of Junk" boxset will indeed be a re-issue of a vintage figure from the 80s? (I hate when people use the term "G1" to describe vintage figures when the classics line is clearly just as G1 as any vintage figure) Werent the YOTS Omega Supreme, FOC Bruticus vs. Grimlock, and the giant Cybertron Starscream re-issue also "Platinum" releases? I was under the assumption "Platinum" simply meant re-issued figure which will be exclusive to TRU and a few other chains. My guess is its going to be a 3 pack of wreck-gar, junkheap, and scrapheap with more cartoon inspired decos. Im not saying it wont be a re-issue of the vintage wreck-gar figure, but that figure kinda sucked. I cant see that figure doing too well in retail. I think hasbro learned their lesson with the insecticons reissue and now Trypticon.

No proof just speculation. However, this past year only one platinum set (that wasn't Year of Something) was not a reissue of an 80s toy. Also the jury is still out on when to use and not use G1. There is a strong argument that the current generations figures are IDW based which is a different universe than the cartoon and toys of old (where Springer and Arcee didnt even know eachother). And if you believe today's toys are just as G1, doesnt that make Alpha Bravo G1? I thought youw ere against that notion.

Anyways...

Platinum Insections: g1 reissue
Platinum Intel Ops: g1 reissue
Platinum Trypticon: g1 reissue
Platinum Seeker Squadron: g1 reissue
Platinum Dinobots: AOE Dinobots reissue
Platinum Triplechangers: g1 reissue

So of those 6 platinums, only 1 was not a g1 toy. And Hasbro did say that this will not stop (in other words, there will be more). So I guess at best its 50/50 that it will be a G1 reissue.

I'm waiting for the silver/grey Perceptor and Highbrow to show up sometime. Only things in Battle Tactics based off toys that don't have a toy, or at least that I've noticed so far. Maybe this set gets a little weird?

I think you mean "the jury is still out," Billy J. ;)

More to the point, though, I think Rated-X is correct in this case. Classics figures, which include a healthy portion of what we are getting from the more recent Generations lines, are by and large figures of G1 characters. Even back in the 80s, there wasn't one unifying continuity for the fiction. The toy bios constituted their own continuity, the cartoon another, and the Marvel comics a third, to say nothing of the ancillary material like activity and reading books. IDW is another G1 fiction, even though it only started within the past decade or so (not in the 1980s). Also, even though the current figures are definitely IDW inspired and tied in to their current fiction, there is product out there that doesn't have any place in the current fiction, or gets shoehorned in for promotional purposes by Hasbro's request. For instance, there is no Bruticus yet in IDW, but we're getting a full set of Combaticons, including a new Shockwave figure, a character who is currently dead in the IDW stories. G1 is an extremely malleable concept and definitely isn't restricted to the 1980s.

If this thread could not turn into a completely pointless circular thing about semantics, that'd be great. Call stuff what you want to; if it gets the point across, then it gets the point across.

Anyways, came back in to speculate on something else entirely, so here's that. What if "Planet of Junk" set only has characters from the Autobot/Decepticon skirmish there and not any Junkions? Would you feel disappointed? I certainly would, but you never do know if that's the approach.

Agreed on ALL acounts :)

The only point I wanted to make, using your better writing, was that since G1 is so maliable, it extends to the original toys as well and thus I do not feel that saying this set is possibly a reissue of G1 toys to be wrong in any way. It could also be because I worked in a collector shop for a very long time and vintage in the collecting world (stamps, cards, coins, cars, comics, toys ect) reffers to anything pre 1980 (and sometimes only pre 1970), so I am not one to throw the word vintage out as easily. Old 50s coca cola vending machines are considered vintage but are 80s arcade machines considered vintage? Just a question, I dont know the answer but in this case a G1 tf toy would be the arcade machine (they were both out at the same time).

Since I have none of those toys in great condition, I wouldnt be saddened at all. However, I doubt that it would be about the skirmish since that would entail having a galvatron too right? And he is rumoured ot be issued with Rodimus in a seperate set.

And I totally get your point, after all who would have thought the Seeker Squadron would refer to the coneheads? or that Perceptor would be part of an Intel Ops set?

It's really interesting that last year we had rumours of the toys being reissued and the set names came later while this year it is the opposite. For the fun of speculation, I preffer it this way.

Re: New Computer Listings at Toysrus Canada for Boxsets of G2 Combiners and Platinum Planet of Junk

Postby Jelze Bunnycat » Mon Dec 14, 2015 1:37 pm

Motto: "The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance."
"Planet of Junk?" Given we have only 1 G1 Junkion figure (Wreck-Gar, and I'm not counting Detritus) and 3 "Generations" ones (Wreck-Gar, Junkheap and Scrap Iron), and Platinum releases are sets most of the time depending on size...

Yeah, I'm calling a "Generations"-style 3-pack on this one.
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

- Jelze Bunnycat =:3

Looking for:
- TR Furos (Hardhead's head) and Crashbash (lost him :()
- PotP Punch head
- TR Galvatron right arm (the gun one)
- CW Brake-Neck/UW Wildrider, CW Offroad
- TR Twinferno & Grotusque
- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)
