I registered just to comment on this topic. Unless I'm mixed up, Shout's press release states the new 4K version is only widescreen, not the complete full screen. If so, that's stupid. My interest in re-re-rebuying the movie has gone down to almost zero. Are they being devious and saving a 4K full screen for the next anniversary? Anyone else care? They got me excited and then disappointed me.

I was fortunate in that, unlike many people, I've pretty much always had this movie, and watched it literally hundreds of times, probably far more than any other movie ever. One of my uncles had 2 VCR's (back when they were still super expensive, and most homes only had 1), He could copy movies, and he copied TF:TM for me as soon as we found it at a local Video store in 87. (I eventually got the FHE VHS, but it was years later).

I showed it to all my friends, and they were always impressed. I had a long distance move in high school, and showed it to a new group of friends, many of whom just didn't get a chance o see it theatrically. None of them believed me about the curse word that was edited out.

A few years later, we were at San Diego Comic Con. Back then, they had rooms dedicated to Anime, and sci-fi movies during the day, but at night, they had local hotels that would have banquet rooms and they would have programming running all night. I was with 2 of my friends, and I woke them up at 5am to walk several blocks downtown to a hotel showing a film print TF:TM, just to prove this one part to them.

Needless to say I was not disappointed. My first Botcon happened to be BC98, where a few sellers happened to have the Canadian Clamshell VHS which had just come out, that is how I got my first unedited version ;) .

Any bonus features from the Blu-Ray not included in this release?

Just a bit of fun with fictional geography. When I was on vacation, we were driving along Interstate 84 which follows the Columbia River (East to West towards the pacific ocean) and forms a natural boundary between Oregon and Washington. During the drive we passed a place called...

Lookout Mountain:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lookout_Mountain_(Hood_River_County,_Oregon)

Now according to TF wiki, there are several such places

https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Lookout_Mountain

But I like to think that the one we passed may have been based on the location described in TF:TM. I mean you can see Mount St. Helens (the true life equivalent from the fictional Mt. Saint Hillary) from it's peak. only about 112 miles North. In my mind Autobot City could not have been very far from the Ark Crash site (Autobot HQ), and I'd like to think the water system seen in the movie may have been one of the tributaries or forks of the Columbia River. There is definitely a Pacific NW vibe in the scenery of the movie.

The thing is, isn't the volcano where the Ark is located at part of a desert? Autobot City was in a very green, forest-y valley area.

And didn't it take Trypticon a while to get to Autobot City after he destroyed the Ark in "Five Faces of Darkness"?

It would make sense for the Autobots to want to defend both side of the country with outposts located in both the east (Autobot City) and the west (the Ark, pre-Trypticon).

One of the unfortunate inconsistencies of the sunbow series. Sometimes it looks like it's in a desert

Image

and sometimes a forest

Image.

Having driven/visited these states many times I will say parts of Idaho and Washington are considered "high desert", even eastern Oregon. But if you look at the real geography of Mount St. Helens, it is very much a forest environment.

Image

I understand the idea of spreading out and creating a base far away to defend "both coasts" as it were, but one would think the Autobots would just build on another continent altogether as they wanted to protect the whole planet, not just the United States.

The Idea of making Autobot City close to Autobot HQ makes sense as they would not want to build too far from home for their first major construciton project on Earth, and the lush green forest area of Autobot City very much reflects the Pacific Northwest IMHO.

As for Trypticon, well, walking speed for Giant creatures (as a fan of Godzilla I often wonder about this) isn't really something that can be measured in real world terms. Still, as I said previously, it's about 112 miles between Lookout Mountain Oregon, and Mount Saint Helens Washington. So even a giant creature walking I would imagine that would take some time (although in Thief in the Night Trypticon is stealing buildings all over the world in a matter of hours, so who knows) ;)

One would think, but it was the U.S. government with which the Autobots had the best relationship and thus could get the easiest building permits from them. ;)

You were spot-on. I didn't pay attention to that part, or maybe subconsciously chose to not read it that way, but regardless I finally opened mine up, realized this, and now I feel extremely ripped off. There's no excuse for not including the 4:3 version in 4k.

If anyone's reading this thread and has not bought this yet, please save your money and do not buy this latest release. I guess if you don't have a 1080p bluray and this is all that's available go for it, but otherwise it's a waste of time.

Well, I bought mine, keep in mind I only bought it for the BluRay version since I don't, and probably never will, have a 4K TV or disc player. I haven't done a full comparison with the 30th-anniversary edition but the full-screen transfer on this set looks a lot sharper. Unfortunately, the blurring during the first few moments on Earth with Daniel and Hot Rod is still there. I'll have to check but I don't think it's as bad but it's still noticable.

So, I just found out something about Unicron in TFTM. Orson Welles wasn't the one who provided Unicron's roars.
Yup, the roar of Unicron was a combination of the stock concussion sound effect and the roars of The Incredible Hulk from 1982, provided by Bob Holt. He died the month before the main recording, before he'd finished up on Go-bots. Arthur Burghardt had to step in as Cop-Tur for the last part of the run.

I've actually known that for a while. The same roar is done by the Juggernaut in the Spider Man & His amazing friends episode "A Firestar is Born"... In fact it was because of this that for a long time, I actually thought the Juggernaut in that episode was also voiced by Orson Welles  The voice was actually William Marshall (He also voiced Tony Stark in another episode), but the roars were Bob Holt.

But anyway... Happy (1 day late) 35th anniversary. I saw the film sometime in the mid-week following it's opening weekend. Several of my friends were going on about how awesome it was, and I had to fight hard for this one because pretty much my whole childhood we went to the movies maybe 2-3 times a year. I had missed Godzilla 1985 the previous year, but no way was I going to miss this one.

My poor mom dragged myself (age 10) My friend Roger (who was 12) form across the street, and his friend Anton (some kid I barely knew) to go see it at a matinee. Probably in todays world my mom would have been arrested for kidnapping, because I'm pretty sure neither of these kids asked their parents permission to go with us, and the theater was a good 10 miles away. But you got to love the 80's. No cell phones, and your kids can be missing for hours with no worries. .

The movie obviously had quite an impact on me as it is one of my favorites to this day. I typed out the script by-hand on a type writer in high school (pre-internet), and I know every line of dialogue pretty much from memory. I cant say that about any other film, not even Star Wars.

As for the Death of Prime, I think some stories are exaggerated. I don't honestly think (random story about a kid who locked himself in his room)...ever happened. Did some parents right angry letters? Possibly, I dont know, I know my mom wasn't one of them, I dont think she really cared because I dont recall ever even discussing the film with her.

As for Prime's death scene, I've given the generic "I cried" comment in the past, but here's really, as best as I recall what happened... I remember feeling sad, feeling like I wanted to cry, but in the presence of my peers, I couldn't let that happen, so I held it in. I remember being misty eyed for sure, but never full on crying.

I just got my copy & I'm disappointed that the contrast is still jacked up to 10. It looks terrible. I don't understand why they can't fix this. Hot Rod is glowing bright pink. And a lot of scenes are very grainy.

Are they ever going to release a normal version of this movie? Tone down the damn contrast! It's not that difficult.

Everything else looks great on my TV. It's just this damn movie that's screwed up. They keep re-releasing it with the messed up contrast & never bother to fix it. The colors are always screwed up on this movie & I own multiple different copies. Somebody set the contrast to the max level decades ago & nobody ever fixed it.

I have been saying this for years , I don’t think PinkRod is a contrast issue made by any of the VHS or DVD/Blue Ray transfers

To begin with I always remember that he was sort of pinkish in some scenes From when I originally saw the film on screen and last summer I got a chance to see the film on screen once again at a neighborhood theater and he was still rather pinkish in those same scenes

If you look at some of the early prototypes for the figure the toy was also pink, it’s my guess that those things were just animate it early in production which resulted in the poor color choice

So Hasbro has been putting up on the Hasbro Pulse YouTube channel the G1 Transformers cartoon. Right now they have seasons 1 and 2 and that got me thinking, over 15 years we've gotten The Movie on DVD, Blu-Ray, and now Ultra 4K; maybe it's time for the original series to be remastered. I'm not talking all the way to 4k but maybe 720p at least. If not all four seasons then maybe a best-of. Then that got me thinking what episodes to put on the best of and this is what I came up with:

More Than Meets The Eye 1-5
Fire In The Sky
Whatever episode was the return of Skyfire
The first episode with the Constructicons
The first with Omega Supreme.
Vector Sigma 1-2
Starscream's Brigade
The revenge of Bruticus
Child's Play
Whatever the follow-up episode was, I think it was called The Gambler
First Dinobots
First with the other two Dinobots
The Secret of Omega Supreme
Kremzeek
A Decepticon Raider in King Arthurs Court
Golden Lagoon
Five Faces of Darkness 1-5
God Gambit
Web World
Ghost in the Machine
Dark Awakenings
The Return of Optimus Prime Part 1-2
The Rebirth 1-3

I think that's enough for two discs, maybe three. Anything that should be cut or an episode you would add?

It has been. Shout! Factory made it pretty clear that what they put on DVD isn't going to look any better. The movie was produced on film, so it could be remastered over and over. The TV series wasn't, so the DVDs are as good as it can get.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:and that got me thinking, over 15 years we've gotten The Movie on DVD, Blu-Ray, and now Ultra 4K; maybe it's time for the original series to be remastered.
It has been. Shout! Factory made it pretty clear that what they put on DVD isn't going to look any better. The movie was produced on film, so it could be remastered over and over. The TV series wasn't, so the DVDs are as good as it can get.

Yeah, I recognized the "Extra" sounds. I don't believe what Shout said. I think there's more that can be done, maybe by another company that might have deeper pockets. I'm not asking for much, maybe some color correction and removing some of the lines and "Grit."

Ah, wasn't expecting that. Toy Galaxy already did G1 Transformers in general, so I figured that was as much coverage the movie was already gonna get.

I'm so frustrated. Sure I've seen TF:TM Hundreds of times. 3 times in the theater (Originally in 1986, SDCC in late 90's and at Botcon 2000). But I've never had a chance to take my kids. 3 years ago in 2018 during the last fathom events I had a schedule conflict. Now, of course, I just don't feel comfortable taking my kids to see it under the given conditions.

Maybe in 2026 for the 40th anniversary, by which time my kids will be 20 and 21 respectively  , and *if* I'm even still around :( .

In 2018 I went with my sister and father, who just came home after a lengthy hospital stay. Don't worry, you'll still be around.
