35th Anniversary of Transformers: The Movie

So as we all know this year is the 35th anniversary of TF: TM. Toys aside what would you like to see done to honor this occasion? While it would be nice for the movie to get another theatrical run as they did a few years ago, especially if they use the remastered version of the film, with the way the world is I don't see that happening anytime soon. So anything they'd do would have to be done in a way that people could enjoy it in their homes. Right off the bat, I think a 4k release of the film would be nice for those who have those kinds of TVs or BluRay disc players. Definitely, the movie needs another re-release to correct the blurring early on with Hot Rod and Daniel by the lake. What I'd really like to see are animated storyboards edited into the film of the deleted scenes that feature Mirage being killed by Megatron and the other missing Autobots. I know that's a pipe dream but I think it could be done, I remember on the DVD of Highlander: End Game they had a cut of the film with all the deleted scenes, even the ones that technically weren't finished. Obviously, the deleted scenes should be separate as well so we can have the option of watching the movie as it was released originally. I'd really like to see a real comprehensive making-of documentary that features early sketches, drafts of the film, and interviews with the writers and creators that really goes into the nuts and bolts of the film. Just talking about why certain characters weren't featured would make this gold. Yes, I know the answers, but it still would be nice to see. If possible maybe they could do a network airing as they did back in the day for GI Joe: The Movie, that would be fun to see and a throwback to the days when movies were shown on broadcast television. Other than that maybe an art book or something would be nice too.

I think it would be cool if they had a collector's package that had the blu-ray along with special features,a collector's booklet which includes the story board artwork with notes from Dery, and other neat things, maybe a special letter at the beginning of the booklet from Cullen or Welker. Also included would be a movie poster, a reprint of the original Marvel adaptation, and one of the new studio series figures (maybe a character that hasn't been released yet). Bundle that all together, and that would be an awesome collector's package.

Oh yeah, throw in a copy of the soundtrack, probably on vinyl with a digital code and you've got a set like they've been doing with other movies and albums.

IIRC The blurring of Hot Rod and Daniel by the lake was caused when then they remastered it, and another remaster isn't going to fix the problem. I'm not sure I would want to see a film like TF:TM in 4K due to getting a damn headache from the how visually bright the movie is and I think in 4K they would have to put a photo-sensitive warning because that kind of bright flashing can cause seizures and speaking as some one who is photosensitive and suffers from seizure like trembles trust me when I say that is no fun.
The 2K remaster looks and sounds great if they continue this 4K upscale to every classic movie some are going so bright that I would not be surprised if they caused eye damage. And it doesn't need to be a classic movies more recent movies I already can't stand to watch Speed Racer because it's so damn bright that gives me a damn headache which is a shame I like the Warchoski's other films and it sucks that I can't watch this one without getting a migraine.

As far animated storyboards of deleted scenes, behind the scenes interviews/documentaries, audio commentaries, trailers, and TV spots, that has been done in earlier DVD and Blu-Ray releases. I'm not sure what else can be said, other than to gather all of that stuff and re-release it all in one package.

Now I think the music video of "The Touch" was released on an earlier release, but I wouldn't mind seeing those intros and epilogues to TF:TM with the kid and the puppet of Powermaster Optimus Prime and the final one ends with the music video of "The Touch" (the show came up of short and they needed a time killer) and that would be nice. I don't know about broadcasting it unless you're talking about YouTube or Twitch I don't see any other platform or network being able to that right.

There are some odds and ends that have been mentioned at conventions but never in a documentary, as far as I can remember, stuff like that I'd like to see covered.

They scanned it at 4K for the Blu-ray release a few years back, so it's probably just a matter of time before the 4K BR is released.

I have to say though, while this is my favorite movie of all time, we don't need to celebrate every 5 years at this point. Every 10 would be fine, then diminish that again after 50, then after that it won't matter because we'll be old af.

I agree, after 40 they really don't need to do anything until 50, then like you said we'll be old and most of us probably dead.

Agreed. I'm just glad to have this outlet after a bit of awkward "back-and-forth" in the Haslab Unicron thread, here is where I can appropriately express my thoughts. It is pretty much my favorite movie of all time as well (at least in the top 3). Is it perfect? No, but it is I believe, genuinely a great story. Does it take inspiration from other things? Of course it does. But it is still amazing storytelling nonetheless.

I'm not going to pretend that the motivation wasn't to sell toys. But to THIS DAY none of the characters that premiered in that movie are my favorites, I never had any of them as a kid, and I don't aim to collect any of them. Any toys that I do have of those characters specifically featured in the film are cooncidental. For instance, I got the Siege Spoiler Box with the Ultra Magnus repaint because I wanted the Battle Master. Initially I was going to sell Magnus by itself, but decided to keep it since I had no other version of that character in my collection.

For many people, the toys are the #1 aspect of collecting. For ME it is the animated series. As awful as some of them are. if it came down to a choice between my toys, and my Media collection, I'd definitely sell my toys first.

Many fans went as many as 10-15 years without seeing from its theatrical release in 1986 until Rhino's VHS and DVD in the early 2000's. In contrast however, I've always had the movie with me. I had an uncle make a VHS copy for me back in 1987 from the first F.H.E. release, and I must have played that copy hundreds of times, I don't know how that tape didn't break.

I do genuinely believe that each fan has the right to collect, or enjoy whatever aspect of the franchise they personally are drawn to. However... as we move forward in time, I also believe every fan should see this film at least once. I can't force it, but I think fans are really doing themselves a disservice, not on just missing a Transformers experience, but on a unique and well animated film. as well. Lastly, the comments I see stating that it is an 85 minute toy commercial and Nothing more I personally do find offensive. I stated at the outset the toys were never the reason I enjoy this film. I just hope that point is understood.

Wow...that was a lot...As for the 35th anniversary. I guess a 4K release would be nice (although i don't even have a 4K player). I'm nto sure what else could be done aside from some more cast interviews.

Back in my early 20's I actually penned a script for a "special edition" (in the spirit of the SW special editions), that probably would have made the movie about 15 minutes longer overall and added many characters that appeared late in season two. I mean if we can't even get some sort of continuation, or series set in the original Sunbow continuity, any chance of getting TF:TM with new animation added that seamlessly looks like the original is pretty much impossible. But it's about all I'd really want , unfortunately it's only a dream.

There's a lot of people who enjoy the movie just for the movie. Many people don't realize that it made its money in the early 90s being shown as a midnight movie during the rise of Anime in the US and due to the nostalgia for 80s hard rock.

I regret not being able to see it at the Fathom events single night event a couple years back (schedule conflict), but I have seen it that way on a few other occasions. I saw a film print of it at SDCC in the mid-90's. That was the first time I got to hear Spike's "swear word" since the original viewing back in 1986. I was with 2 friends that never believed me that he cursed in the film until that moment...very cathartic indeed. ;) I also got to see it at Botcon 2000 with a crowd of fans, that was quite fun as well.

Hopefully, if theaters ever do open again, and another opportunity comes for a theatrical screening, I'd definitely want to see it again on a large screen with fellow fans.

It seems like every major franchise that lasts past 10 years has to celebrate it's existence every 5 years. Even years like 35 and 45 seems to get some kind of celebration.

So with the reveal of the 35th anniversary 4K release today, have any details been revealed other than there will be a steelbook version to pre-order on S!F starting next week and a standard 4K/BRD combo pack later in the summer?

I don't have a SHDTV, or a 4K player, so as of yet I do not own any 4K physical media, this would be my first, but IMHO, the Movie itself would have to come with some significant bonus features for me to purchase this film for the...(4 VHS, 2 DVD, 1 BRD)... 7th time ;) , otherwise I am perfectly satisfied with the 30th anniversary BRD.

What is S!F and is that the only way to get the steelbook?

It's the same company that produced the 30th anniversary BRD (and there was a steelbook for that one also, although it is OOP). I believe that site is the only one that will have the 4K Steelbook for pre-order, though you may find it on other sites. It is available for pre-order starting Monday May 24th (Comes with a lithograph of the packaging art).

Apparently the standard 4K/BRD combo will be available for pre-order at a later date, not specifically stated this morning just "later this summer"

I have the 30th Steelbook. I have a thing for Steelbooks, they're great for shutting people up who talk during a film.

It's nice that TF:TM keeps getting this much attention, but I also think a new update every 10 years is enough. Am I the only 1 who's satisfied with the 20th anniversary DVD? I have that and the original VHS release and that's it.

I like having the Blu Ray, but I think the 20th anniversary DVD set was one of the best overall releases, several of those extras were just ported over to the Blu Ray. I just hope the 4K has something new that makes it worth it.

I have

1. FHE VHS ( first ever release from 1987)
2. Avis VHS ( mid 90s release)
3. Canadian Clamshell VHS (1998) * first unedited release with spikes curse word
4. Rhino VHS with UK crawl sequence
5. Rhino DVD (2000)
6. Sony 20th anniversary DVD set (2006)
7. S!F 30th anniversary BRD (2016)
Bucket/Want List: Botcon 2016 Customization Class Ratchet (G2 Deco), or Customization Class Ratchet (Marvel Comics Deco) **would also be willing to pay for an Unpainted Botcon 2016 Ratchet, TT Legends Fortress Head (only) with working Electronics

Wish List of Modern Combiners: Road Caesar, Monstructor & Dinoking (proper size to fiction), Landcross, Guard City, Battle Gaia, & G2 Defensor. Wish List of Titans:Metrotitan,Majin Zarak

2 New "bonus features", the rest are ported over from the 20th anniversary DVD 15 years ago. I'll probably still get the regular 4K release whenever it becomes available, the steelbook is not my thing.

Also I know there are all sorts of legal reasons, but I just wish we could get a legit physical release of Scramble City as a bonus feature, not one with audio missing, and a commentary I never wanted. For the record I do have fansubbed copies, and yes I know it can be found all over Youtube as well. I just like to support a legit release if it ever exists.

The Full Frame disc is 1080p that is on a Blu-ray Disc. The Widescreen version is 4k and is on a 4K UHD disc. The 4K disc will not play in a Blu-ray player.

As long as they fixed that blurring early in the film with Daniel and Hot Rod, good enough for me.

The Daniel and Hot Rod blurring shot has been there since the beginning. It was even present on the F.H.E. (Family Home Entertainment) VHS which was the original home video release. To correctly fix this Shout! Factory or Hasbro would have to have film elements earlier in the life cycle than what was used in the 30th anniversary release. Not to say this can't happen, but it would even surprise me if that was corrected. Overall this new release will be the best this movie has ever looked.

I never noticed it or saw it before the 30th-anniversary release. I wonder if it was because I had older tech that I was watching it on and it all worked out.

Those are the ones I have. I remember getting the clamshell version along with the GI Joe movie (also in clamshell) just so I have a copy in case something happens to the others. Imagine my surprise when Spike said that line. I was too young to see the movie in theaters, and I had no idea about that word being uttered, as it wasn't on the VHS versions I had until then.
