Alternators Cliffjumper project WIP (updated on 19/1/08)

Postby Sonray » Sun Jan 06, 2008 5:08 pm

Hey fellas! Thought id let you all know what my next custom is gonna be. I don't know where the idea came from, but one night i had a sudden brain wave and thought to myself "you know what? No ones ever done an Alt Cliffjumper before...if i made him into a rally/tuner car that would look awesome!"

So the next day i started looking for supplies. I eventually found my base model, an Alt Silverstreak and a few days later i found a cheap 1/24 scale RC Subaru sports car that had everything i needed: Wheels, spoiler, body kit and a hood scoop.

I havnt made much progress with this yet as i have been busy finishing up a commission which i cant wait to show you all as its one of my best pieces yet! But once thats done i hope to get cracking on this.

Here's what i have so far, all the parts seem to be much bigger despite the scale being the "same", so everything is like fitting a square into a round hole.

Image

As you can see the wheels are too big to simply fit into where the olds ones did, so i need to shave a lot of plastic out and re-shape the wheel arches just to fit the new wheels. Then i need to chop the original front bumper section off and mold the new front bumper in and join it together. (i had to cut it in half to make it match the dimensions of the car mode better as it too was much wider than it should have been. Either this Alt's scale is wrong, or the RC car i bought for the parts is.)

Then i must do the same to the rear bumper and also do the same for the side skirts.

Heres the look i am going for:

Image
Image

Hopefully i'll be able to pull this off, i think this style would really suit Cliffjumper and make the whole toy look very unique overall. Ive never done such extensive remolding before so i hope i can do it but i feel confident cos i figure that if i can restore a real car from the scrap heap to show-room condition, im sure i can do this!

The thing i am not looking forward to the most is remolding the head.

Anyway thats it for now, if anyone has any suggestions for what they think might make this project look even better or would like to see your idea incorporated into the final design please let me know.

Very cool idea!

There is a half assed Alts CJ idea out there. Just plink Red Alert's head onto Red Meister and wa-lah!

Definitely cool, but it's no rally car like it should be.

Dare I say that I don't think there's any way in hell those wheels are going to work!? I really hope you find a way though, because they would look all kinds of bad ass on the figure!

I still think they wont work either, but i dont have anything else to work with and i cant afford to buy different ones (not like theres much choice to work with round here anyway).

I'll figure out a way to make them fit...somehow...

Motto: "Don't do drugs, beer's cheaper anyway!"
Dude, awesome idea!
But don't use those wheels!
I'll tell you what to do, get yourself just a bit of putty or styreen, what ever you like best and just put it on the original whells. and cut and trimm then so it looks like what you want them to ooks like, obviously not the rubber but the inside, you know what I mean.
No way will you be able to fit those wheels into that car without ruining the bot mode.
That or you'll kinda try and let him look like a monster truck.
As for the head, you could try and get a alt Bumblebee head and add styreen parts or something to let it look more like CJ, I'm sure there are some customs floating around, just ask in the bromen studios forum.
If they are to expensive then go to remold the original head of Silverstreek.

Good luck on this buddy!

I know the scale might be off a little, but you may want to try the xmods wheels for the cliffjumper. the scale is 1/28 but that may be easier to work with than shaving fender and such. You can find them on ebay for about 5-10 bucks
Image

Or these perhaps. 1/25th scale. Just need some paint.

Too late, ive shaved all the fenders, they fit perfectly now, and there shouldnt be any compromise on the bot mode either. I was going to buy a set of those wheels but they look too wide and probably wouldnt fit in the wheel wells, so i would have wasted my money.

Dead Metal: He wont look like a monster truck because these wheels came off of a 1/24 scale subaru RC car, they are meant to look like big 22 inch rims on a real car, so they will look really big but not like a monster truck. Anyway he's gonna be part rally car part tuner car so he needs big wheels for when he goes off road ;)

Ive made them fit now anyway so theres no turning back. Dont worry i know what im doing, he'll look fine.

I think I'll rip this off one day. I'll just re-sheel it as an overpowered Escort though. *cough* :P

It's as good idea, but it's too bad about having to resize everything. hope to see if it turns out.

Why not just re shell it as a REAL Ford Mustang? :P

About the resizing thing, its not that big of a deal. So far ive managed to make the wheels fit and the front bumper should be much of a hassle thanks to some milliput, not quite sure how im gonna tackle the rear bumper and spoiler though but i'll figure something out like i always do.

This is a pretty cool idea. Good luck sticking that body kit to it though.

When you restored a car did you do any mechanic work or just body work and paint and such?

Right. As for the spoiler, it shouldn't be too hard to chop the pillars and place them closer, right? Kinda like cut and paste.
The rear bumper, I'll need moree pics to offer my advice.
B-)

Latest update:

The bumper is now attached to the front end. I know it looks like a mess but all that white stuff will get sculpted down to look pretty.

When I first saw it I was thinking "Isdn't he supposed to make it look good?" But then I read the post. :P

Nother question, do you intend to create a new hood scoop?
Or is that impossible for the mold?

I have most of the front bumper done. Everything has been sanded and sculpted to fit and look like it was molded that way. I still have some re-shaping to do to the front section, as well as fill in a few tiny holes that i could only see once i had primed it.

I am now working on the rear end, the modded bumper fits pretty good and should require as much sculpting as the front end did. After that all i gotta do is fit on the side skirts using the same methods, some how re-sculpt the head (if i mess it up i might just buy a CJ head from Sculpt Bot if i can afford it) and add the spoiler than paint.

Should be a pretty smart looking toy once im done.

Here's some pics.

Even in primer it looks amazingly smooth.
It looks like it was molded that way.

As the sculpting is refined, you will match up the grille pillars correct? They stick out a bit. Other than that, looking great.
If you need help with the head desig, I can always digibash one.

Hehe, yeah i gotta fix those grille bits, thats the only extensive re-shaping work left on the bumper.

I have a rough idea what i want to do with the head, but any help would be great so please feel free.
