Appreciating a smaller collection

Postby huryochagi » Tue Jul 12, 2016 11:15 am

I had a very small collection of G1 figures from the 80's. Almost 10 years ago, I started getting TF from eBay. Before I knew it, I was hoarding figures like crazy. I felt the need to buy every G1 figure that was missing in my collection. I bought the vintage and reissue versions. Everything that was remotely G1-like, I had to buy. When I was on vacation, I hunted down G1 figures. I expanded my collection to include 3rd party TF, SD-sizes, WST, statues, Classics, Universe and Masterpieces. My bedroom was full of storage boxes of TF piled up to the ceiling.

I had no space to display them, but I kept them to fill voids in my life. I decided to part with most of it. I think I sold about 80% of my collection. I feel truly liberated. I'm still selling them and plan to only keep the figures most dear to me. Now that my collection has become significantly smaller, I appreciate each figure a lot more.

I'm kind of the same way. I enjoy looking at figures but I only purchase the ones I really like because then I appreciate them more.

When I was a kid I liked Dragon ball Z and collected every single figure. I had literally EVERY character - Even guys like Master Roshi and Nappa. Of course later on I got rid of all of them except for Vegeta and Trunks. I felt bad because I spend a lot of time and money getting them but they just took up space.

I suppose it was worth it because as a kid I played with toys because I didn't have cable TV and all I had was them and a gameboy. As an adult I play with figures differently, instead of playing with them and making sound effects I mostly pose and display them.

I got into TF's about a year and a half ago and I only have 5 figures. I will probably get more as time goes on but it will be ones I have chosen because I like them and enjoy them. Every time I see my figures or pose them they make me happy and every one of them has meaning beyond "It looks cool." Which feels right for me.

If people want to collect that's cool. Some people have truly amazing collections that can fill a whole room, which I fully support if that makes them happy. I just like to be more choosy.

Yeah. I've gotten far, far too many of these things, just to find most of them end up in a box out of sight. I mean, I've transformed each of them dozens of times, they've all gotten their fair share of attention and all... but yeah so many were bought just for the sake of buying something.

But downsizing's a hurdle all it's own. :P

Honestly, I've gone through phases of hoarding my collectibles to only just doing certain focuses. I am reluctant to sell anything because I really do like what I purchased for myself or had purchased for me. Even though I do lack the space to display it all.

The only thing I am somewhat of a completist on is the Jurassic Park dinosaurs and Carnegie Collection Dinosaurs made by Safari Ltd. Jurassic World kind of ruined that a bit where I only collected certain things that looked good. The Carnegie Collection partnership got the boot last year from Safari Limited. So no more figures will be made or re-issued.

Megatron is my own focus for TFs, but I have bought others specially Decepticons and Predacons I liked. I do have a few Autobots and Maximals in my collection too. It still is mostly small though, and the only thing displayed is Megatron, reformatted forms of Megatron carrying the name of Galvatron, and Cybertronians carrying the name of Megatron (The Fallen and Beast era Megatron). I am not getting the repaints of the figures and frankly I'm hesitant to get the retool of particular molds as well. Like Armada Megatron from Combiner Wars when I already have Combiner Wars G1-inspired Megatron.

When I was collecting Star Wars I switched from "buying all the things" to just focusing on the Galactic Empire and the Sith affiliated.
