Inside Omega Supreme – Corridors

Pharma wrote:“Very good, Bluestreak, my boy. I’ll leave you to it. If you run across anything unexpected and need help, let me know.”

“Don’t worry, Pharma, I will!” Bluestreak shouted back as his voice echoed through the tight corridors of Omega Supreme. The chatterbot continued to stay focused on the task at hand, soldering the nodules that needed repairs. It wasn’t hard work and things came along quite nicely. “There we go! That should do it!” Bluestreak switched off his soldering torch and began to inspect his work just as another transmission came across his comm line.

Pharma wrote:>>Bluestreak, my boy, Neutro and his fellow builders are going to aide us in our efforts. I shall be in Omega Supreme’s processing center to ensure no repairs are needed there if you need me.<<

>>”Glad to hear it, Pharma! We can use all the help we can get! By the way, I got these first set of nodules all patched up. I’m moving on to the next ones. Just FYI.”<<

Bluestreak didn’t wait for a response. He simply moved further down the corridor he was in until he came to the next junction of damaged nodules. “My my, you guys have certainly seen better days. Heh,” the dark blue and silver mech muttered under his breath as he knelt down and activated his torch again. As the nodes were carefully reconnected, Bluestreak received yet another comm from Pharma.

Pharma wrote:>>Bluestreak and Neutro, my boys, I believe reactivating Omega Supreme will best enable us to repair him in a quicker fashion. I suggest you secure your tools and persons in the event our friend awakens in a foul mood.<<

“Oh for Primus sake,” Bluestreak muttered in an annoyed fashion. >>“Well, I hope Omega doesn’t move around too much, Doc. I have pretty steady hands but not when I’m rattling around inside a ticked off Omega Guardian.”<<

With his concerns stated, Bluestreak grabbed a hold of a nearby bulkhead with his free hand while continuing to solder the necessary connections with his right. It didn’t take long for Omega to awaken and his ominous voice to echo throughout the corridors.

Omega Supreme wrote:”REACTIVATION COMMENCING. ENERGY LEVELS BELOW OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS. DAMAGE SUSTAINED; GRIEVOUS. NERVOUS SYSTEM OPERATIONAL LEVEL AT 81.37%. REQUESTING PRESENCE OF OPTIMUS PRIME OR A REGIONAL COMMAND FIGURE. NEWS; URGENT.”

“Oh, boy,” Bluestreak said out loud. “Okay, Omega, I’ll call Prowl for you! He's the closest command guy here. Just hang in there!” The chatterbot then opened a secured comm line to the military strategist:

>>”Prowl, this is Bluestreak. Omega is awake and needs to speak with a regional command figure urgently. He didn’t say what it’s about, but I’m sure it’s important.”<<

Autobot City Construction Site – Outside

Jetfire wrote:>>Prowl, this is Jetfire. I am heading down to Autobot City with a scanner to further the gestalt project. According to the Ark sensory logs, Omega Supreme and Skylynx are down there with you. They may prove quite valuable for information on their own combination process. I will also scan all Auto pots down there to glean any other information for future candidates and better understanding. We may find other possibilities for future projects beyond the gestalt process.<<

Before Prowl was able to get an answer to his most recent question, he received a comm from Jetfire. Apparently, the gestalt project was chugging along nicely and the scientist was on his way down to continue scanning for prospective candidates. The military strategist sent a non-verbal acknowledgement back to Jetfire before returning his attention to the mechs in front of him.

Grapple wrote:"Ah, yes. Omega was carrying several fellow Autobots. From...where...I'm not sure, exactly. I haven't got the story and didn't quite think it my place to ask. But they certainly all look like they've seen better cycles.”

It was not Springer that ultimately answered his query, but Grapple. “Really? Do you know who they were? I would very much like to speak to them?”

“It was us, sir.” The voice came from behind Prowl, who quickly spun around on his heel to face the newcomers to the conversation. The black and white immediately knew the orange ‘Bot standing before him.

“Rung?! You’re here?! Last I heard you were stationed on Garrus-9 as their chief psychiatrist,” Prowl said as he looked beyond Rung to the mech standing behind him. “Who’s that?”

“That’s Streamlight. He was a guard at Garrus-9, and you are correct, sir, I was stationed there, but something happened. Something terrible that you must be made aware of. I understand Optimus Prime is…no longer functioning?”

“Actually, now that you mention it, he’s been found, safe and alive,” Prowl informed him. “He’s…not quite his old self yet, so Ultra Magnus is still in charge for now. However, you can tell me whatever it is you need to say and I’ll relay it to….”

Prowl was then interrupted by the booming sound of Omega Supreme’s voice:

Omega Supreme wrote:”REACTIVATION COMMENCING. ENERGY LEVELS BELOW OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS. DAMAGE SUSTAINED; GRIEVOUS. NERVOUS SYSTEM OPERATIONAL LEVEL AT 81.37%. REQUESTING PRESENCE OF OPTIMUS PRIME OR A REGIONAL COMMAND FIGURE. NEWS; URGENT.”

That was then followed by a transmission from Bluestreak, indicating that Omega Supreme had awoken and was demanding to speak with a high-level officer.

>>”Yes, I just heard him, Bluestreak. Thank you. I’ll be there shortly.”<<

Cutting his comm line, Prowl looked back at Rung. “Well, as you heard, Omega is now awake. I take it he’s going to tell me something similar to what you were about to say?”

“Yes,” Rung responded, solemnly. “But I think it’s better if you get the story from him, sir.”

“Indeed,” the strategist agreed. “Go get whatever medical attention you and Streamlight here may require. I will touch base with you later if I need to.”

“Yes, sir,” Rung said as he and Streamlight moved out of Prowl’s way. However, before the black and white could make his way over to the Omega Guardian, Jetfire approached, having just bounced down.

Jetfire wrote:"Hey, Prowl, I figured I would do some scanning for the gestalt project and take a general look around out of curiosity. I see Omega Supreme and Skylynx are here. Omega seen better days while Skylynx is as pristine as ever. I shouldn't be too surprised with the lieutenant commander. I promise I will stay out of the way."

“Do whatever it is you have to, Jetfire,” Prowl said as he walked by the aerial scientist. “I have a very important debriefing to attend to.” With that said, Prowl made a beeline directly towards Omega Supreme before disappearing through the outer hatchway.

Inside Omega Supreme – Processing Center

Knowing that the best place to engage Omega would be in his central processing center, Prowl made his way there. Once he had arrived, the black and white saw that Pharma was already present, having been the one to reactivate the sleeping giant.

“I guess I have you to thank for this, Pharma,” Prowl said as he approached the center of the room where the main processor was located. The military strategist did not wait for a response as he turned his attention to the Omega Guardian.

Omega Supreme, this is Prowl, second-in-command of the Autobot forces here in the Sol System. Optimus Prime is currently recuperating from injuries and Ultra Magnus is very busy with other matters. Whatever urgent news you have can be relayed to me.”

Peruvian Valley – Eastern Perimeter

Kup wrote:"They will, lad. You're in the right place now to show all the right 'Bots what you can do and why you chose a different path.”

The last words Kup had spoken rang though Howlstrike’s processor as he ran along the eastern perimeter of the valley in his timber wolf mode, the holographic shield wall to his right flank. The former Predacon hoped what Kup had said was true. Unfortunately, some Autobots would never truly accept him as one of their own, at least not fully. Howl had done some pretty terrible things when he was under Razorclaw’s command, things that the wolf-former didn’t want to think about. But that was long in the past and Howl was a different mech now. Did it matter though? No matter howl long it had been, Primus would never forget. Had Howlstrike done enough to redeem himself? No, not really. Would he ever? That remained to be seen. All he could do now is continue down the right path and hope that his redemption was not an unachievable fool’s errand.

Howlstrike began to slow as his forward sensors detected a weakness in the holographic shield up ahead. The mechanical wolf came to a halt next to one of the holo-shield generators that had been previously installed to help maintain the valley’s protective shield which also acted as a hologram making it appear as though there was a large mountain here instead of a valley. Howl transformed back into his robot mode and knelt down next to the generator.

“Hey, Kup, this generator seems to be malfunctioning,” Howlstrike called back to the old pick-up truck that had brought up the rear. “It hasn’t failed yet, but if it’s not repaired I fear it will. Then we’ll be sitting duck-bots. I’m not very good at fixing stuff. Think you can do it?”

Arcee wrote:>>Arcee here, my troopers and I are patroling the northern border. Old Mech, it's good of you to join us!<<

>>”This is Howlstrike. I read you, Arcee. We found a malfunctioning holo-shield generator here at the Eastern border. We’ll hopefully have it fixed soon.”<<

As the wolf-former cut his comm line, two of his autotroopers arrived and transformed into their robot modes. “Hey, look, the Pred broke one of the generators!” One trooper yelled, accusingly. “I knew it! You’re trying to reveal our location so your ‘Con buddies can find us!”

“I’m not trying to reveal anything you fragger!” Howlstrike bellowed as he stepped forward, getting into the autotrooper’s faceplate. “It was like that when I got here!”

“Sure it was, LIAR!” The autotrooper pushed Howlstrike back away from him, knocking the former Predacon into the holo-shield. The wolf-former’s shoulder plates bounced off the shield, causing it to flicker briefly before it returned to normal.

“You idiot! You could’ve caused this whole section to fail!” Howlstrike roared back at the autotrooper. “I should rip you apart for that!”

“Go ahead! It’ll only prove me right about you. Once a Predacon, always a Predacon!” The trooper shouted, readying himself for an attack.

Howlstrike’s clawed hands balled up into tight fists as the rage welled up inside him once more. The wolf-former drew out his sword, not really knowing what his next move would be. No matter how hard he tried or how long he meditated, the anger was still there buried deep. Sure, it took longer to finally come to the surface than in the past, but given the right circumstances the rage would eventually come out.

Hopefully, Kup would be able to calm him down. The old timer always seemed to have a knack for saying just the right thing at just the right time. Howlstrike needed those words of wisdom right now. Otherwise, things might end badly for not only this autotrooper but for the lupine tracker, as well.

Bluestreak wrote: >>“Well, I hope Omega doesn’t move around too much, Doc. I have pretty steady hands but not when I’m rattling around inside a ticked off Omega Guardian.”<<

Of all of Bluestreak’s communications, this was the one that Pharma actually listened to and winced. Visions of Bluestreak and the others falling and bouncing off every internal component of Omega Supreme, undoing the repairs that were already completed and ending this endeavor in a possible explosion of Autobots should the giant decide to transform.

The idea of being caught, smashed, and shredded between transforming parts was the worst way Pharma could imagine deactivation occurring. He knew it wouldn’t happen. Well, extremely doubted it for Omega Supreme was one of, if not the, most intelligent of the Autobots. At least, that was the guardian’s reputation. Pharma doubted it, but this was one subject he wouldn’t mind being in error.

As luck would have it, nothing happened at first. It would be a slow build, Pharma knew, but seeing the various screens come to life and systems rerouting told him the process had begun.

Omega Supreme wrote: ”REACTIVATION COMMENCING.”

Nothing happened following the few flickers and Pharma silently cursed himself.

Doubts, second guessing, and giving into one’s ego were all unforgivable sins those in the medical field could make. It put their patients in the secondary column and limited what a professional could do, or was willing to do, to fulfill their duty.

All of those were legitimate concerns that Pharma had run through his processor forwards, backwards, and even sideways. Through it all, he had fought against his urge to find the information he needed to be the breakthrough Autobot scientist on combiner technology. While Earth was the epitome of Cybertonian hell for him, he knew he had no right to put any of his compatriots at risk for his personal gain.

And yet, here we are, he thought as he stared at the depressed switch. In truth, he didn’t know what to expect. He had taken all of the safety precautions he could, aside from waiting that is. But he needed some information, and if he waited, he’d have a cadre of Autobot technicians cluttering around him, getting in his way as they stumbled over themselves in an effort to prove their existence as needed. Then there would be the command mechs, who would continuously ask him questions he didn’t feel up to dealing with at the moment.

No, this was the best way he could think of. He just hoped his trust in his abilities wasn’t misplaced. If he had made he slightest mistake, he felt certain he would be calling this mudball home for the next millennium.

Omega Supreme wrote: ”ENERGY LEVELS BELOW OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS. DAMAGE SUSTAINED; GRIEVOUS.”

Tell me something I don’t know, Pharma thought as he waited, silently kicking himself for not anticipating the increased decibel levels within the guardian. It was obvious Omega Supreme was in the process of a self-diagnostic, and the only thing Pharma or anyone else could do was wait until the process finished.

Pharma’s optics focused on the energon readings. His hopes were on shaky ground despite what his logic circuits told him. Come on, Omega, don’t let me down.

Omega Supreme wrote: ”NERVOUS SYSTEM OPERATIONAL LEVEL AT 81.37%.”

Relief flooded through Pharma at hearing that. Thank Primus for logic and skill.

The questions Pharma had been formulating since recognizing the opportunity the guardian’s battered form presented ran through his processor as a jumble of formulas and codes. He’d worked so hard to organize what he’d ask and when, making sure he wouldn’t bypass his patient’s care during their discussion. But before he could utter a word, Omega Supreme instructed,
Omega Supreme wrote:”REQUESTING PRESENCE OF OPTIMUS PRIME OR A REGIONAL COMMAND FIGURE. NEWS; URGENT.”

Pharma stood flabbergasted and unsure how to respond. He hadn’t dealt with combat casualties very often and found his processor unable to fully process what had been asked. When Bluestreak responded on the standard Autobot communication channel, he quietly thanked his helped. Bluestreak was many things, industrious was certainly one of them.

The command types coming was exactly what he feared would happen, only it occurred a lot sooner than he had anticipated.

Following Prowl’s quick response, Pharma resisted the urge to curse and instead returned to his normal designation as a doctor. Time for his research later. Depending on how things went with Prowl being there, of course.

Turning his attention to the guardian, he said, “Prowl is on his way, Omega. It won’t be long. My apologies for reactivating you so soon, but I felt you were stable enough to impart important information. If at any time you need to shut down, do so. We’ll get you fully operational either way.”

Pharma had to admit, he impressed himself. He hadn’t lied, exactly. After all, an exaggeration or embellishment on a gamble wasn’t a lie per se. Maybe I should transfer to the diplomatic core. Knowing he’d have to tolerate the occasional Decepticon pushed that thought aside, though it was tempting to get one of them alone for interrogation and testing…

He shook the tempting idea off. He’d already gambled enough.

Prowl wrote:“I guess I have you to thank for this, Pharma.

“Of course, however, I would prefer if my patient receive…” He let his voice trail off as it was obvious he’d been dismissed by Prowl. No, no, don’t thank me. It’s my duty after all, is it not? Wonder if anyone would notice if I reprogrammed Prowl into thinking he were a toaster?

He knew he was probably expected to leave, but after the risk he’d taken with Omega Supreme, a horde of scraplets could tear him away from his patient and any information that may be forthcoming.

Prowl wrote: “Omega Supreme, this is Prowl, second-in-command of the Autobot forces here in the Sol System. Optimus Prime is currently recuperating from injuries and Ultra Magnus is very busy with other matters. Whatever urgent news you have can be relayed to me.”

Pharma busied himself with double checking the connections and nodules in the processor section. Most ignored the medical types anyway.

The presence of Pharma had not gone unnoticed by the ancient Omega Sentinel. A screen near the Chief Medical Officer flickered for few nanokliks before an avatar of Omega Supreme appeared on it and addressed the medician.

”REACTIVATION: NECESSARY. CONCERN: APPRECIATED. OMEGA SUPREME: WILL ENDURE.” He replied to Pharma’s words, his voice now audible only within limited area inside him. His duty weighted on him. The devastating news he was tasked to bring the Autobot High Command had to be shared. His personal well-being was inconsequential in a situation like this. Nevertheless, this had not been his first battle, nor the first time Decepticons had left him in brink of death. No, he would endure once again.

“Omega Supreme, this is Prowl, second-in-command of the Autobot forces here in the Sol System. Optimus Prime is currently recuperating from injuries and Ultra Magnus is very busy with other matters. Whatever urgent news you have can be relayed to me.”

Prowl. Of course. Prowl would suffice. Omega Supreme had no problems about sharing what he knew with the tactician. Plenty of his directives after all had come from this particular member of Autobot Command hierarchy.

”ACKNOWLEDGED.” He simply replied back to Prowl.

”RECORDED VIDEO DETAILS: ON SCREEN.” He continued, his avatar disappearing from the screen and video playback from his activation to his escape from Garrus-9 appearing before Prowl and Pharma.

”DECEPTICON SURPRISE ATTACK IN ELBA SYSTEM. DECEPTICON COMMANDER RESPONSIBLE: SCORPONOK.” He clarified, though Prowl had likely assumed as much from the Decepticons shown on Omega Supreme’s recording.

”GARRUS-9: FALLEN. FORTRESS MAXIMUS: DEFEATED.” He continued with his bad news before relinquishing his only good news to give. ”AEQUITAS: PRESERVED. RUNG’S PATIENT FILES: PRESERVED.”

Think you can do it?” Howlstrike had called out to the rest of their scouting party. Kup was a little further behind than he'd have liked to be, but he'd been over worse terrain than this. He wasn't about to let it scuttle his scouting activities.

"Well, I'm no repair mech, but I've fixed some field equipment a time or two in vorns gone by, I'm sure I can-"

But Kup's words were quickly drowned out by raised voices. Howlstrike and the Autotroopers were gettin' into it verbally and were obviously not too far away from gettin' into it physically.

Kup transformed and, with a quickness that gave a glimpse into his younger days of smooth, effective battlefield prowess, strategically putting himself inbetween Howlstrike and the two Autotroopers, pushing one of them back a few steps further with his palm.

"What the frag is this nonsense?" Kup barked.

"Mebbe your optics and your audios are too cloudy, old timer. We caught this Predacon trying to sabotage the equipment, gonna let his 'Con buddies know where we all are."

Kup was to explode. He would work on calming Howlstrike down, but first he needed to take the lead outta these half-cocked Autotroopers.

"Listen grunt," Kup growled, getting right up under the first Autotrooper's chin unit. "I've been right behind him this whole time. He can't have had time for that kind of sabotage. Not even Soundwave works that fast. And you punks have been gunnin' for him ever since we landed, tryin' to make him go back to his old ways. Well...I done worse things than him and Razorclaw in my day. Things I ain't proud of. Things I regret. You wanna try me? Bigger mechs than you two say he's good and he's got every right to try and make a new life for himself. I'm one of 'em. As far as I'm concerned, this matter is over and done. Now. I hear about it comin' from either of you or yer friends again, and I'll show ya why I used to run with Impactor. Get me?"

Well, I can’t argue with that, now can I? Pharma thought, while also contemplating how difficult a patient the guardian would be. He was known for a constitution unrivaled by most, if not all remaining Cybertronians, but surely, even he would see reason at some point?

Primus, now’s when I worry about that? He wanted to shake his head at his own hypocrisy, but instead, he put on the neutral visage he normally used for his patients and nodded. “Understood, Omega, I shall continue to monitor you while your… guest is here, but I suggest you keep it short to save your energon.”

Once again, Pharma questioned his motives and reasoning for reactivating the giant so soon, but he quickly brushed them aside. For whatever reason, he’d made the correct diagnosis, and if it saved Autobot casualties in the future, he would have to be satisfied with that. There would be time to implement his plan in the future.

He turned as he thought he spotted some organic thing move in the shadows, but when his optics didn’t register anything, he went back to his task of enhancing the repair schedule. Now I’m hallucinating. I have to get off this mudball soon, while my logic circuits are still intact.

As he worked, moving various agenda’s around to allow greater efficiency and making sure Prowl didn’t overtax his patient (Is Prowl the one I should be worried about?), he listened offhandedly to the conversation, searching for bits about casualties and types of weapons used to better effect repair operations when the guardian got to the part about Garrus-9 and Fortress Maximus falling to Scorponok.

For that to happen, Scorponok would’ve needed a large force, of that he had no doubt. And that meant casualties. Many, many casualties.

When the guardian mentioned Rung’s patient files. Without giving Prowl a chance to respond, Pharma turned his attention to the guardian. “Omega Supreme, pardon the interruption, Prowl, but do you know what happened to Fortress Maximus’ forces? Were there any injuries, I mean, and should we head there to help? And would Rung’s files be of assistance in aiding our current forces, wherever they may be?”

He knew he sounded like a first cycle medic, but Omega Supreme had dispensed with so much information in a few sentences, certain allowances had to be made. He’d also overstepped his bounds and had little doubt Prowl would try to bounce him out of the processor center. Given the situation, he couldn’t blame him, but Omega Supreme was still his patient and he braced himself for the order to leave or the lecture that was sure to come. Either one would prove an interesting test of wills.

Autobot City – Outskirts

Sideswipe sped through the undergrowth of the Peruvian jungle, trying to burn off his frustration at Broadside having joined his side.

What is so hard to understand I don’t need help?

He growled as he poured more power into his engine, tearing through the brush.

Frag it, I’m tired of these games.

He activated his transformation sequence at full speed, reaching out with his hands as his arms extended and planted them on the ground. Using his momentum, he flipped and landed facing back the way he’d come. His feet dug trenches into the ground as he skidded to a stop.

He scanned the jungle for any sights or sounds of pursuit, and when he found nothing, he straightened to his full height.

There was little doubt his running from them had only made things worse. Had he stayed and fought them like they seemed to want, it would’ve put an end to their belief that he was soft and Sunstreaker was the better of the two. Or left them thinking I’d break the rules ‘cause I was losing.

Sideswipe groaned at the no-win scenario he’d put himself into. The city limits were a short distance away, meaning he could make it without running into either of the two chasing him. If they were able to. He did hit them pretty hard and was sure that would’ve put down some of the tougher Seekers.

Nah, they’re troopers. Prowl’s put them through worse. It didn’t stop him from thinking on the what ifs. It was one thing to be ruthless in an actual battle, but in a training session?

Groaning, he started heading back to check on the troopers. “They probably won’t even appreciate this,” he said, kicking at a loose vine. At least, I have a clear path back to them.

Despite his concern, his recklessness shown through as he walked down the center of the path he had carved, daring them to come at him if they were functional. Of course, he had little doubt they were waiting to ambush him. Prowl trained them, so they probably lack any imagination.

~~~ :BOT: ~~~
Brawn stood with his hands on his hips, pleased that he’d found something interesting, but not sure what it meant aside from a diversion.
The hole he’d stumbled into was nothing more than a depression that had a handful of caves lining the sides, but nothing that went more than an arm’s reach. He didn’t really know why it fascinated him so in the beginning, given it didn’t fall into his usual field of expertise, but different ideas began to spark in his processor.
He let out a groan. “Great, now I’m thinking like Perceptor. I really need to spend more time with my fellow fighting mechs,” he said, shaking his head.
Maybe it was because of his stint as head of the city, or whatever Grapple had called it. Whatever it was wasn’t important, the lingering impression it’d made on Brawn was. Not that he’d ever admit it to anyone. Either way, he thought the tunnels could be used or even copied into the underground of Autobot City as a bunker or escape tunnels for the weaker mechs. Whatever Prowl and Grapple thought worked best.
Still, he had to admit this was part of the reason he enjoyed venturing into the jungle. Not only did it test his ability physically, but if he was lucky, he’d find something to help his fellow Autobots not designed to fight stay safe. Just because he and others enjoyed pushing themselves and getting into the occasional scrap didn’t mean others were made of similar stuff.
Better report in before someone misses me. Time to top up my energon, too, he thought with a sigh.
With little effort, he climbed out of the depression and transformed. As he drove along the trail he’d found, he wondered how fast Grapple’s cranial unit would explode. Probably wouldn’t think it’s beneath him. Something only a mech like me would notice.
Grapple wrote: "Yes, the finished product should be quite remarkable. Perhaps not my greatest construct of all time, but...we'll see. Sometimes I outdo myself," Grapple chuckled. "As for oversight, no fear of that my friend. With Prowl here, we'll have all the oversight we could ask for. And perhaps a little more, if Prowl's history holds true. But, in all honesty, I welcome his presence. I'd rather focus on getting this place constructed and let others deal with the minutiae of management."
So, it’s the usual: let someone else deal with it. Optrix would have snorted or sighed had it been in his nature, and he was grateful he wasn’t one of those mechs that enjoyed imitating humans. Such a waste, he thought, trying to keep his expression neutral.
Still, he had to admit there was a surprising amount of wisdom in Grapple’s reasoning. As much as Optrix found him annoying, he couldn’t help but give the ‘Bot a modicum of respect. “It is the wisest of us that know our limitations and work within them. I think you will be a legendary builder by the end of your function cycle, Grapple.”
Knowing that was a close to a compliment as he could give another, Optrix turned his attention back to the rest of the construction site.
He hadn’t been paying attention to the comings and goings around him — he was studying how each mech moved, measuring their apparent organizational abilities — and probably missed anyone trying to talk to him, until he heard Prowl discussing things near them. He glanced over, noticed the new arrivals and silently cursed his luck.
“The one time I venture out to view the world beyond my inventory programs, and a horde of grabbees descend,” he mumbled to himself, shaking his head.
He started to turn away, but remembered Grapple and how he’d been respectful to him. In good conscience, he couldn’t leave without showing the ‘Bot the same curtesy. “I would like to talk with you again, Grapple, and hear how things go. We’re both awfully busy, but it would be nice to chat over some energon sometime.”
As soon as he said it, he questioned his logic circuits. He hadn’t bothered sitting with anyone, talking about anything over energon since… well, before the war. And then, he’d only done so with his fellow scientists. How low I have sunk, offering friendship to one not of the sciences. How disappointing.
[Peruvian Valley]
Broadside was cruising across the valley. The Autotroopers were speeding behind him, and he was still flying fairly low and slow. He figured that this was getting a bit boring and didn’t really know what to make of it, considering he didn’t have a land mode like Springer and Sandstorm. So instead, he accelerated himself a little bit and took to the skies.
They can enjoy tryna shoot me from down there.
The gray Wrecker circled around the valley quickly, to ensure that everything and everyone was taking care of their patrol areas. The sky was relatively clear and rather calm, with the only sounds being the occasional gust of wind. No one ‘cept me and the birds here.
“It is the wisest of us that know our limitations and work within them. I think you will be a legendary builder by the end of your function cycle, Grapple.”
Well, that was a nice sentiment, wasn't it? Grapple smiled. Granted, back in Cybertron's glory days, he was already considered a 'legendary builder', but he was hardly so crass as to bring that up. No, he'd take the compliment for what it was meant to be. At least he hoped. There seemed to be some kind fo discrepancy between this mech's words and his intent, but Grapple couldn't quite put his finger on what.
"My thanks," Grapple said, offering a nod of appreciation as he resumed looking at the schematics on his datapad, scrolling through different areas of the central building area--the skeleton of which was already going up thanks to the efficiency of the buildbots that had been allocated for this project.
“I would like to talk with you again, Grapple, and hear how things go. We’re both awfully busy, but it would be nice to chat over some energon sometime,” Optrix added, seemingly as an afterthought. The idea was straightforward enough, though. Why would he refuse?
"I would certainly take you up on that. Right now, I suspect all of us are being stretched a little thin. But, I like to think I'm capable of finding occasion here and there to slow down and enjoy the little things we're fighting for, like a low-yield, spiced engex."
Autobot City – Outskirts
Sideswipe paused and scanned the surrounding jungle.
Now that the so-called fighting had ceased and stun bolts weren’t slicing through the air, the natural sounds of the animals was slowly returning. It wouldn’t be near the level it normally was for some time, at least, he didn’t think so.
Scrap, I really tore this place up. Prowl is not going to be happy at these paths.
Still, he found it somewhat rewarding. He’d torn up the countryside, caused all sorts of havoc, and not a single Autobot trooper patrol had come to investigate. This is going to be so much fun pointing out to him, Sideswipe thought as he ducked under a low hanging tree limb he’d driven under a few minutes earlier.
This place has potential. A ‘Bot can get lost in here for cycles and not have to worry about being found.
His thoughts refocused on why he was backtracking and he shook his head, mumbling, “Frag it. Prowl needs to train these mechs right. This was too eas—” A gentle bump alongside his head interrupted his mini-gloat. FRRRAAAAG IT!
“You were saying something about this being easy?” the fembot trooper that had been one of his more intense chasers said as she clicked on her comm unit. >>We got him, head on down.<<
“So,” Sideswipe began, “this is how you get me, huh? Prey on my weakness for the weaker—” She clunked the stun pistol against the back of his head. “OW! Seriously?”
“Don’t you ever shut up?”
Is that rhetorical? He almost said that out loud, but somehow he refrained from giving her a reason to his him again.
“Wow. A whole astrosecond of silence. I’m impressed.”
He couldn’t help but smile. “Well, if that oils your gears, you’ll love how I get out of this.”
“I’ll bet,” she said, smiling as she stepped back and circled to face Sideswipe.
“Not bad, limiting my options.” Great. There goes option one. What would Sunstreaker do in this situation? Oh, right. Be annoying. I got this. “You don’t happen to have any touchup paint handy, do you? I have to make sure you didn’t chip the paint on my cranial unit.”
Her smiled faded some. “Do you think I’m stupid? I know you aren’t vain like your twin. No one’s as vain as him.”
Sideswipe nodded. “True, but there’s something else we don’t have in common.”
“Oh? What’s that?” she said, her cocky smile returning.
“He wouldn’t have come back to check on you guys.”
Bushes rustling behind him told him the other trooper, who like the femme, didn’t like him for some reason.
“So, you’re blaming getting caught on developing a conscience?” The newly arrived trooper asked as he came to a stop next to Sideswipe. “Give us some credit.”
Sideswipe nodded. “I am. I’m giving you all the credit you deserve. I’m just pointing out I was less than a klick away from the city when I came back. I hit you both pretty hard.”
“We’ve been hit by worse, tough guy.” The male trooper said, his own smile a hundred times more arrogant than the fembot’s.
I really need to learn their names, he thought, then brushed it aside. Time for that later.
“I’m sure you have. So, are we heading in or what?”
“You’re seriously not going to give us any trouble?” The fembot’s expression changed to one of confusion, then her smile returned. “Nice try.” She re-aimed her stun pistol, leaving little doubt how she intended to win this.
Sideswipe shrugged. “And this is what I get for being concerned for my fellow ‘Bots.”
The stun bolt shot past his head, just grazing his housing.
“Ow! Seriously?” he said, his hand going to the left side of his head that gradually went numb as the energon flow shut down. “You could’ve just shot me.”
The male trooper glared at her, then him, and finally at her. “What’s going on? We had him!”
The femme’s cocky smile returned. “You heard him. He came back. He showed us a weakness and we exploited it. We’ve evened the score.”
Sideswipe’s smile spread across his faceplate. “I knew I liked you. But, I’m sure Prowl covered this, you don’t want to give your enemy a second chance.”
“Believe me, I won’t.” she said, her own smile growing. “I assume this was your plan to get free?”
Like my plans really work out this well. “Actually, I was going to use…” his voice trialed off in mid gesture to the male trooper and rethought what he intended to say. “His aggression,” he continued, “to help antagonize you into this. Obviously, only part of it worked, but—”
“Worked? I don’t see you walking away, pal.” The other trooper started leveling his stun rifle, but Sideswipe knocked it up, wrapped his arm around it and keeping the barrel pointed skyward, and pulled it from the trooper while shoving the trooper backwards.
Sideswipe lowered the rifle so its barrel was aimed at the trooper’s chest. Sideswipe’s smile turned upwards in a sadistic way as he said, “Never stand this close to your prisoner, trooper. I’m sure Prowl will love to hear about this.”
The femme groaned, knowing this would mean more training for her, too.
“What’d I ever do to you, anyway?”
It the male trooper could’ve terminated Sideswipe with a look, he would’ve happily done so. “Remember that little brawl you started on—”
“Oh!” Sideswipe’s optics brightened at the memory. “At that station. Yeah, that was a good one. Never saw so many mech being carted off to the med bay before.”
It took him a moment, but Sideswipe suddenly realized where he’d seen the trooper before. “Oh, about tossing you into the engergon bar. I’m sure it wasn’t too much damage—”
“I’m still paying it off.”
“Oh, you’re still… Yeah, well.” Sideswipe’s faceplate shifted from elation to confused, and back to a sly setting as he finished speaking. “At least, you have a comfortable post to earn toward that. Anyway,” he spun and headed back along the path a third time, “we’d better get back before Prowl gets worried. I almost lost you both once. I don’t think Prowl would enjoy to punishing me. He’s too tempting to… well, never mind.”
He paused at the path and motioned for the disarmed trooper to lead them back, then he followed with the femme close enough to keep an eye on her, but not too close. She reminded him of himself a little too much.
“Anyone know a good marching song? I’m sure Prowl taught you guys something besides counting laser and plasma rounds.”
{i]The little things we are fighting for, eh? Optrix thought as he turned his single optic skyward. He could just make out the pin pricks of stars above the atmosphere. It was still too light and the atmosphere too thick even for his telescopic lens to see more than the dots scattered above.
“Yes, the little things,” he muttered. If he allowed himself, he’d float away on a energy current of nostalgia and study the subtle movements of the stellar bodies as they move to and fro, riding the gravitational currents. Islands in the aether, he had heard once, and found he liked that phrasing much more than any of the typical scientific terms he’d added to his must know informational archive.
As hard as he tried, he couldn’t remember where he’d heard it, or even it is was Cybertronian or Earth-born. Not that it mattered. Such beauty could be understood anywhere, by anyone. Even those on this backwards world.
Oh, to spend an eternity sitting under a blanker of night and study every celestial body.
He pulled himself from his thoughts, and it only took a quick self scan to tell him he’d been stargazing for five point eight astroseconds. Not too long, but long enough for one of his mechs to earn a reprimand from him.
As if in after thought, he asked Grapple, “Do you feel this way is just? That what we’ve given up is worth it?”
He didn’t know where this line of thought had come from, but it was something he hadn’t allowed him to think about in… forever.
“Yes, the little things,” Optrix agreed, prompting a small nod from Grapple as he returned to the schematics on his datapad.
“Do you feel this way is just? That what we’ve given up is worth it?” Optrix continued after a few moments.
"Mm?" Grapple said, looking up from the datapad as Optrix's question processed itself further in his mind. "Oh....well, I've had my doubts along the way, certainly. I would hope that every Autobot capable of actual autonomous thought has."
Grapple started to walk, directing Buildbots that were completing one task on to a new one.
"I think our way is better than the Decepticons' way, certainly. Now, if you compare our path to those who stayed out of the war and fled, the waters become a little murkier and I lose some of that clarity. Is our way more just than theirs? Perhaps not. But I think that what I've given up is worth it. It has to be. I've given up too much to have any real second-thoughts now."
It was the response he’d expected, and there wasn’t much Optrix thought he could argue about on that point. Yes, he’d met a few gung-ho Autobots that seemed to want the war to continue, but was that a product of their programming or the war itself?
More impressively, it wasn’t as vague or too in-depth as he’d expected. It was just another way this Autobot continued to surprise him.
He watched Grapple manage a group of builders and the sight brought a smile to his faceplate. It was a nice chance to see someone else manage others, even if it wasn’t in the micro-style Optrix preferred. He guessed everyone had their methods, but few could match him for efficiency. His record stated that clearly.
Optrix nodded along. Giving up one’s dreams for any cause was difficult, but to change their whole reason to function? That bordered on either infatuation or insanity. That was something Optrix wasn’t ready, or wanted, to ever address.
Maybe after the war. If we’re still functional.
“Who’s to say? Second thoughts are why we are in the fields we are in, I wager. You still get to construct your buildings, albeit, with a lean toward battle mindedness, and I get to solve anomalies like the black hole of supply. May we return to what we love one of these cycles.”
AEQUITAS: PRESERVED. RUNG’S PATIENT FILES: PRESERVED.”
Prowl’s optics widened considerably as he took in all of the video images that were shown on Omega Supreme’s screen. Those pictures coupled with Omega’s own words sent a wave of anger and disgust throughout the military strategist’s entire framework. This was why a more aggressive, preemptive strategy needed to be implemented by the Autobot war machine instead of a more defensive and passive one. This was why much tougher choices, not to mention morally ambiguous ones, needed to be made by mechs like Prowl instead of letting ‘bots that had no fuel pump for it make the difficult decisions. Sometimes you needed to fight evil with evil if only on a temporary and controlled basis.
“Unbelievable,” Prowl muttered under his breath as Omega finished speaking. Pharma then interrupted and asked about Rung’s patient files and what ultimately happened to the Autobot forces at Garrus-9. While it was nice and all for Rung’s patient files to have been preserved, it was the mention of Aequitas that garnered the most attention from the black and white. “Aequitas?! You were able to save it? Where is it now? Is it here, Omega?”
Aequitas was an Autobot supercomputer that served as the judge and jury for Garrus-9. It’s culpability drive was able to calculate the guilt of a mech by assessing evidence and testimony and then judging a suspect’s very spark to see if it was found wanting. However, there was much more hidden within the supercomputer’s databanks, such as information that the Decepticons could’ve used as propaganda against the Autobots had they been able to get their mitts on it. Thankfully, Aequitas was password protected with one of the best security systems around. So, it would’ve been very difficult for the ‘Cons to break into it. Still, Prowl was happy Aequitas had been protected and kept out of Scorponok’s reach.
“This probably explains why the Decepticons were chasing Omega in the outer reaches of Sol,” Bluestreak suddenly chimed in with his own two energon chips. “They were after Aequitas. Prowl, I doubt they’ll stop trying. If there was any doubt before there’s definitely none now. Scorponok will come here to finish what he started. We have to be ready.”
The military strategist then turned his gaze towards the dark blue and silver mech. “Oh, we will be. I now have what I need to push harder for the gestalt project as well as an Autobot phase sixer. We’ll need those assets now more than ever.”
And if Magnus and Prime won’t give me what I need, I’ll go through whatever unofficial channels I have to in order to protect and enhance the Autobot war machine and win this war once and for all, Prowl thought to himself as his attention returned to Omega Supreme’s view screen and the Decepticon attack on Garrus-9 that continued to play on it like a broken disc.
Peruvian Valley – Eastern Perimeter
Before Howlstrike and the autotrooper could come to blows, Kup forced himself in between them, demanding to know what was going on. The trooper tried once again to accuse the former Predacon of sabotaging the force field generator to which the old timer would have none of it.
Kup wrote:"Listen grunt, I’ve been right behind him this whole time. He can't have had time for that kind of sabotage. Not even Soundwave works that fast. And you punks have been gunnin' for him ever since we landed, tryin' to make him go back to his old ways. Well...I done worse things than him and Razorclaw in my day. Things I ain't proud of. Things I regret. You wanna try me? Bigger mechs than you two say he's good and he's got every right to try and make a new life for himself. I'm one of 'em. As far as I'm concerned, this matter is over and done. Now. I hear about it comin' from either of you or yer friends again, and I'll show ya why I used to run with Impactor. Get me?”
As Kup read them the riot act, Howlstrike put his sword away and began to calm down. It was nice to have someone like Kup stand up for him. There weren’t many ‘bots like him around that were willing to give Howl a chance at redemption. The former Predacon knew what he used to be and what he had done, but that was all behind him now and he wanted it to stay that way. He just wanted to make amends and do the honorable thing now even if many others didn’t see it that way.
“Fine,” the autotrooper scoffed as he backed away from the angry old timer. “Whatever you say.”
Howlstrike then cleared his vocalizer a bit before placing a gentle hand on his long-time friend’s shoulder plate. “Thanks, Kup. I appreciate that.” The wolf-former then looked at his assigned group of autotroopers that had gathered around the scene. “One of you can remain with Kup and help him fix the generator. The rest of you will continue to patrol the perimeter with me. No arguments.”
Once he had finished speaking, Howl looked back at Kup and gave him an appreciative nod.
Few things surprised Brawn anymore. In his eons fighting with the Autobots, he’d seen just about everything imaginable thrown at them by the Decepticons.
He’d never bothered to think too hard on them, as it wasted precious time and energy. He was a fighter, a true to the core brawler that relished having his enemies up close and personal.
The lines had always been clearly drawn between the two sides, and maybe it was for that reason he was unsure of what to do when he spotted the threesome on the road head of him.
He recognized Sideswipe right away, and his immediate thought was he’d gotten himself into something he couldn’t get out of. AKA Sideswipe’s daily activities.
Still, he thought about saying something as he drew nearer, but remembered the mech had been talking about some kind of training game.
Brawn harrumphed at the thought of taking part in a game. While he understood Sideswipe’s need to burn off energy, he often wondered just how badly injured his shenanigans were going to leave him one of these days.
Guess I should stop and… His thought trailed off when he saw the trooper being led back to the city at rifle point by Sideswipe and a fembot trooper.
Chuckling, Brawn said as he drove past, “I’m surprised you’re on that end of the rifle for a change.”
Sideswipe shouted something at him, but Brawn was too busy laughing to pay it any attention. The kid had spunk, and maybe one of these cycles, Brawn would take him up on a match. He’d always been curious how the twins’ martial arts would compare to some pure brute force.
“That’ll be a fun one, I’m sure,” he said, chuckling as the road opened up to the partially completed Autobot City. He was surprised to find himself more impressed each time he returned from an excursion in the jungle. Maybe it was a touch of homesickness or desire for something familiar. Whatever it was, he didn’t give it a second thought and simply enjoyed the feeling.
‘Bots of all shapes and sizes were moving about, busy with this or that under Grapple’s semi-watchful eyes.
Brawn had long ago accepted Grapple and others like him were the better mechs patience-wise, if not battle-wise. Let them have their fun, he often told himself, as long as they don’t leave me or another hanging.
Still, it took longer than he felt it should to reach Grapple and transform. “Hey, Grapple,” he said, approaching. “I found some weird…” his voice trialed off at seeing the supply ‘Bot he’d had to help Gears with earlier standing to the side. Shaking his head to push the stray thought aside, he continued, “it’s a squarish ditch that could be made into a bunker or escape tunnel for non-combatants to use if we’re attacked. No use in getting in the way, am I right?”
Brawn was so pleased with himself at what he’d found, he didn’t even realize the barb he’d sent at Grapple and the others.
~~~ :BOT: ~~~

“You make friends everywhere, don’t you?” the fembot trooper asked as Brawn disappeared down the road.

Sideswipe had hurled one of his best insults at the mech without Brawn even flinching. “Yeah, well, it’s a habit.”

The other trooper snorted but kept walking.

Sideswipe thought about saying something to him, but the grueling training Prowl would have for them was enough punishment. At least, until he thought of something more himself.

The trio continued walking until the outer boundary of Autobot City came into view.

“So, you’re really going to walk us in there like this?” the male trooper grumbled, turning to eye his stun rifle as he spoke.

Sideswipe shrugged. “Pretty much. Unless you’ve learned from this.” He came to a halt, and the two troopers did so as well.

“And what are we supposed to have learned?” the male trooper asked.

Sideswipe shrugged. “This was meant to get used to the jungle layout. It’s a bit different than just rocks, dirt, or metal, isn’t it?”

“We’ve trained in vegetation, though,” the femme asked.

“But not on this planet. It’s… different. Not every battlefield is the same.” Sideswipe tossed the stun rifle to the male trooper, who caught it and gave him a look of surprise. “What? Would you rather I shot you both and left you in the jungle? I still can, you know. But my weapons aren’t stun.” He gave them a wicked smile.

“Scrapplets never change.”

The fembot glared at the male trooper, then turned back to Sideswipe. A tiny bit of surprise colored her voice. “You really did this to help us?”

Sidewipe’s smile shifted into a sly one. “Well—"

“I knew it!” The male trooper threw his hands into the air.

Again, Sideswipe shrugged, looking pleased with himself. “Okay, fine, it was meant to keep me from being bored. I’m not known for sitting around and doing nothing, ya know.”

The fembot nodded, a slight smile appearing on her faceplate. “You’re full of surprises.”

“Yep.”

She fired the stun rifle into his chest, the bolt’s energy freezing his expression in shock. Electricity sparked and coursed through him as he dropped, unable to move for the next few seconds. Taking the opportunity, the fembot walked over and knelt next to him. “What was that you were saying about getting too close before?”

With her own sly smile, she stood and turned and said, “Come on, let’s get back to the city. He’ll catch up.”

The male trooper smiled as he studied Sideswipe. “Maybe another round to make sure…”

“Stow it. We’ve caught him, and it’s time to report in.”

The male trooper hesitated, but nodded and followed her toward the city, leaving Sideswipe laying at the side of the road.

Well… that didn’t work out like I expected.” The stun was starting to wear off, and he tried to sit up. His body responded slowly, his servos whining as they tried to do as he commanded them.

Grunting, he finally made it into a sitting position, wincing as his systems continued to reboot as the electrical charge faded. Frag it, that hurt
, he thought. It was his own fault. He’d become too cocky and it cost him. Again.

“I really gotta remember not to do that again.” He slowly pushed himself to his knees, then feet as the final effects of the stun rifle wore off.

Not liking how things had ended, but knowing he still had a small chance, he transformed. His wheels spun and threw grass and dirt everywhere before they gained a grip and he shot forward.

As he rounded a turn and spotted the troopers ahead of him as they crossed the city’s unofficial boundary.

Frag it! He accelerated and waited to cross the boundary before transforming and coming to a stop next to them. For a few astroseconds, the three just stared at one another before Sideswipe finally smiled. “Well done. I didn’t think you had it in you.”

The troopers exchanged a look, then both smiled. The male trooper said, “I still owe you.”

A laugh escaped from Sideswipe as he rested his hands on his hips. “You may get your chance. Looks like the energon is on me.” Without waiting, he started toward the inner part of the city.

After a few steps, the fembot asked, “What about the others? Did you let them know we’re done?”

Oh, scrap. “Uh, yeah, sure did.” Opening a channel to Broadside and the two troopers chasing after him, he said, >>Broadside and company. We’re finished with our part if you want to join us for some energon. My treat.<<

Primus, I hate the sound of that.

Aequitas? Pharma had heard of it in passing, nothing more. In fact, it meant nothing to him. Which, to his irritation, seemed to be the priority for Prowl.

The CMO managed to remain quiet as his concern for the others was overshadowed in light of this new information. He had no doubt as to its importance, but the sparks of those that had been on Garrus-9 were his priority.

Though, now that he took time to think of it, his question hadn’t been the most intelligent. If the Decepticons took the prison, what was the probable outcome for the Autobots there?

Primus, the only ones capable came here.

He knew what he’d be willing to do to them had any Decepticons been captured. And he wasn’t as ruthless as the gentlest ‘Con. At least, he thought so. He wasn’t sure if those he… treated previously could or would claim the same.

The thought of so many sparks snuffed out or tortured simply for being Autobots caused his energon pump to increase its rate, increasing the heat radiating from his core. He barely managed to contain the outburst that was building within him. He wasn’t a mech of violence, but something like this… the wanton destruction of others was precisely why he wished he’d remained anywhere but here under these conditions.

I have no one to blame but myself. He would’ve ripped his cranial unit from his chassis and threw it against the wall in frustration had he been a lesser mech. But his skills were needed, even on a backwater mudball like this.

Bluestreak wrote:“This probably explains why the Decepticons were chasing Omega in the outer reaches of Sol,” Bluestreak suddenly chimed in with his own two energon chips. “They were after Aequitas. Prowl, I doubt they’ll stop trying. If there was any doubt before there’s definitely none now. Scorponok will come here to finish what he started. We have to be ready.”

Pharma hadn’t noticed Bluestreak join them, or he’d been too preoccupied to care or remember. Which one wasn’t important to him at the moment. But the thought of Scorponok, or any Decepticon warlord, coming here with what they currently had for defense and support. If something happened to the small fleet above…

He pushed the thoughts aside, along with his concern for the Autobots taken prisoner. He couldn’t do anything to help them now, but he could do his part here.

He turned to instruct Bluestreak to continue with his repairs when Prowl replied.

Prowl wrote:Oh, we will be. I now have what I need to push harder for the gestalt project as well as an Autobot phase sixer. We’ll need those assets now more than ever.”

The strategist’s vocalization was music for Pharma’s ears. Of course, it was the last thing he expected to hear from any Autobot officer. They were too much like their leader — risking deactivation instead of doing what was necessary to win. If Prowl had different thoughts than the hierarchy, Pharma could use this to his advantage.

Never one to be shy or careful with his words, Pharma found his vocalizer wires cross-tied for an astrosecond. He hadn’t expected to give a proposal until he had something of substance that couldn’t be ignored. He wasn’t even sure he had more than a simple understanding of what he even had planned.

For the first time in his memory, his processor was glitching.

“If I may, Prowl my boy,” his vocalizer was in action before he had a chance to stop it. “While it’s not strictly my realm of expertise,” his processor was running at full capacity now, “I have been formulating a way if acquiring or adapting combiner technology.” He paused to let his words sink in.

In too deep now. Best to continue the surgery.

“Obviously, it would be easier if we had one of the Constructicons or a Decepticon scientist to… examine. Since we don’t, I’ve been hypothesizing that larger mechs like the guardians, Omega Supreme in particular, and their ability to communicate with their various parts when separated. If we can duplicate and rework that connection, we may be able to have a single ‘Bot as the central brain controlling others like drones, giving them a consciousness instead of standard programming.”

Now that he vocalized his plans, he didn’t feel as confident as he had a moment earlier. “Of course, this is merely a hypothesis. Nothing can be proven without extensive testing.”

I should’ve explained that better, he thought.

“Fine. Whatever you say,” the Autotrooper said, backing down.

Fragging right "whatever I say", Kup thought. Kup wasn't an expert in hardly anything, but he knew security and he pegged himself a pretty solid judge of character. What was he fighting the war for if not for mechs like Optimus Prime to beat back Megatron's vision of tyranny but also for mechs like Howlstrike and who knows how many other Decepticons to question what they were fighting for and pick the right side instead.

“Thanks, Kup. I appreciate that. One of you can remain with Kup and help him fix the generator. The rest of you will continue to patrol the perimeter with me. No arguments.”

"Anytime, kid," Kup nodded, looking at the Autotrooper that was being left to assist with the repairs. "Now, let's get this thing all prettied up. Prowl and Grapple don't like it when their goodies don't work."

Omega Supreme remained silent for a little while as he formulated his next response. It wasn’t a big surprise his circuits were still rattled from the combat action he had seen ever since his reactivation back on Garrus-9. The grievous damage he had taken from the Decepticon flagship the Semper Tyrannis and later by Scourge’s destroyer the Burning Justice would certainly have obliterated most mechs in seconds. Yet the guardian still functioned.

“Omega Supreme, pardon the interruption, Prowl, but do you know what happened to Fortress Maximus’ forces? Were there any injuries, I mean, and should we head there to help? And would Rung’s files be of assistance in aiding our current forces, wherever they may be?”

“Aequitas?! You were able to save it? Where is it now? Is it here, Omega?”

Curiously enough, Pharma couldn’t refrain from the build up of questions forming in his head instead of waiting for his superior officer Prowl to ask his questions first. It did not bother the ancient Autobot. It was just that bots like Prowl were often quite strict about the correct procedure regarding rank. In this care, Omega saw now harm done by answering them both.

”DETAILS UNAVAILABLE. LIKELYHOOD OF COMPLETE DECEPTICON VICTORY IN ELBA SYSTEM BY NOW THROUGH OBSERVED NUMBER OF HOSTILE WARSHIPS PRESENT; INEVITABLE. AUTOBOT FLEET INCLUDING THE STEELHAVEN, REMOVED FROM EQUATION. DIRECT RESCUE OPERATION; INADVISABLE.” Omega gave the details as he had seen them. He had never been able to raise contact with Fortress Maximus or Garrus-9 command despite of his attempts. The only possible conclusion was that they had been compromised prior his own reactivation. And given how many Decepticon warships he had seen while making his escape, it was clear that whatever fleet the Autobots had had garrisoned in Garrus-9 were all annihilated. Any rescue mission would result in a catastrophe without proper scouting.

”RUNG’S PATIENT FILES STORED WITHIN STREAMLIGHT. THEIR PROPAGANDA VALUE IN ENEMY HANDS; TERRIFYING. PRESERVING THEM; A MINOR VICTORY.” The giant Autobot continued. Rung had been the leading figure within the Cybertronian psychiatrist community as long as anyone could remember. His patients during all the vorns the Great War had waged on included every Autobot leader from Optimus Prime to a myriad number squad leaders. As a propaganda weapon such files were potentially as dangerous as the Aequitas itself.

And finally, it was time to give Prowl the answer to his own direct question. ”RETRIEVING DATA. AEQUITAS UNHARMED DESPITE OF MY INJURIES. LOCATION; INTERNAL SAFETY STORAGE BANK A-1.”

In the skies

Jetfire was glad to have Prowl's permission to do the scans. He leaped into the air with scanner in hand. Once he was high enough, he transformed into his jet mode and connected the small scanner into his own systems. Once he got the settings figured out, he flew above the growing city. Jetfire was amazed at how quickly the new base was coming. As he flew around and took the scans, he noted all who was down there. The likes of Grapple and Hoist would make sure the project would be sound structurally. Once he got all the scans of the individual mechs, he took a closer scan of SkyLynx and Omega Supreme. Part of him wanted to discuss things with the two larger mechs but he had a feeling Omega was busy with Prowl since Jetfire saw the commander enter the omega sentinal. This would leave SkyLynx but that Autobot had a superiority complex the size of Cybertron. Discussing transformation and combing sequences with the commander would have to be done in a delicate way. While Jetfire debated on how to go about things, he received a message from First Aid about a major issue with the gestalt software. Worse part is both Prime and Magnus is there. Failure isn't something any scientist wants to see but does expect on occasion but to screw up in front of high command is another headache.

“Who’s to say? Second thoughts are why we are in the fields we are in, I wager. You still get to construct your buildings, albeit, with a lean toward battle mindedness, and I get to solve anomalies like the black hole of supply. May we return to what we love one of these cycles.”

"I will drink to that, any orn," Grapple replied pleasantly. He then paused for a moment at the approach of another Autobot. Brawn. For a moment, he wondered whether the small but burly mech realized that Grapple and Optrix were in his way. But, at just the right moment, Brawn transformed and finished his approach on foot.

“Hey, Grapple, I found some weird…” Brawn began, before trailing off awkwardly. Grapple looked at Optrix and then back at Brawn. “It’s a squarish ditch that could be made into a bunker or escape tunnel for non-combatants to use if we’re attacked. No use in getting in the way, am I right?”

"Ahh, okay," Grapple said, not wanting to discourage Brawn's enthusiasm for whatever it was that he'd actually found. When it came to schematics, Grapple had every aspect of this site mapped out and properly apportioned. No easy feat, given the unstable terrain. But once it was finished, he was quite confidant that the Autobots could use it as a permanent diplomatic outpost once relations were established with the natives of this world. Still, he also didn't want Brawn to think his contributions were something to be discounted or ignored.

"Well, if you would just indicate the coordinates of what you found on my holoblueprint here, I'll...well,I'll be sure to incorporate your recommendations into the final design."

Pharma’s processor had moved onto other things, like taking hold of the opportunity handed him by the universe. It wasn’t something he was proud of, but he’d managed to make a certain amount of peace with not being able to help those on Garrus-9. It was something that would haunt him for eons to come, but nowhere near as bad as it would have been had he been there and fled.

Compartmentalizing the trauma of having a patient die was something all doctors had to specialize in, but that didn’t mean it got any easier. In many ways, it made Pharma wonder how those in command could distance themselves so easily and continue to send others into harm’s way.

Such is the price of war, is it not? Primus forbid we do something to end this war as quickly and efficiently as possible. Though, with Prowl now seeming to be open to such things, it gave him hope.

It was while Pharma was focused on those thoughts that Omega Supreme’s declaration caught him by surprise, though he’d expected such an analytical evaluation.

Omega Supreme wrote: ”DETAILS UNAVAILABLE. LIKELYHOOD OF COMPLETE DECEPTICON VICTORY IN ELBA SYSTEM BY NOW THROUGH OBSERVED NUMBER OF HOSTILE WARSHIPS PRESENT; INEVITABLE. AUTOBOT FLEET INCLUDING THE STEELHAVEN, REMOVED FROM EQUATION. DIRECT RESCUE OPERATION; INADVISABLE.”

Inadvisable. That’s such an efficient word to sum up futility, Pharma thought, shaking his head.

Omega Supreme wrote: ”RUNG’S PATIENT FILES STORED WITHIN STREAMLIGHT. THEIR PROPAGANDA VALUE IN ENEMY HANDS; TERRIFYING. PRESERVING THEM; A MINOR VICTORY.”

“It may be minor, but a victory it is nonetheless,” he mumbled, once again wondering when it would all end.

He turned his attention back to Prowl. Maybe the end is closer than any of us know.

Grapple wrote: "I will drink to that, any orn,"

Optrix nodded. It was so rare to find someone that he was in agreement with on anything, though, to be fair, it didn’t help that he purposely refused to have interactions with others as much as possible.

He would’ve asked himself why had he not already known the answer. After everything he lost, the last thing he wanted was to chance upon others that were doing what they loved or, worse yet, had found a new love.

Where he saw efficiency and duty, others saw opportunities. He was well aware of his shortcomings, but he hadn’t bothered to think about it too often. Depressing one self wasn’t good for functional capabilities.

“May it be a drink we enjoy soon… my friend.” Optrix paused, thinking over his choice of words. Could he really have found a friend? Did he want to consider it possible while still locked in his world of numbers, transfer receipts, and complaining mechs.

No sooner had the thought crossed his processor, then he saw the mini-bot Brawn drive toward them. Oh, we return so soon, do we? He would’ve chuckled had he not realized it most likely wasn’t him the ‘Bot was there to see. Deciding it would be interesting to see if Brawn’s interaction with Grapple was anything like his own, Optrix remained where he stood, refusing to back away from a possible incoming threat.

When Brawn stopped and transformers and only offered him a glance, Optrix wasn’t too perturbed that he wasn’t the focus of the mech’s attention, especially after hearing why he was there. Wish I had some energon to sip while watching this. Don’t be too gentle, Grapple.

Grapple wrote: "Ahh, okay,"

Brawn’s smile widened. It was an interesting feeling at being part of something beyond knocking Decepticon chassis together. Though he doubted he’d ever give up what he did best.

Grapple wrote:"Well, if you would just indicate the coordinates of what you found on my holoblueprint here, I'll...well, I'll be sure to incorporate your recommendations into the final design."

“Coordinates?” The word slipped from Brawn as his smile slowly faded. Scrap! I knew I forgot something. “Well, uh, I don’t know the exact coordinates, but I can lead you to it. It’s only a mile or so from here. Near where Sideswipe and the others were doing their thing.”

The Construction Patrol continued to fix the many issues in Omega Supreme. Everything was going well until he woke up. Neutro shook his head and wondered who woke up the sleeping giant.

>>Pharma, did you wake up the sleeping giant? You do realize it will take longer now to recharge him if he remains in this more active state. I hope this was for his more personal diagnosis because I doubt his internal repair systems will be worth the energon cost. It would have been better if we waited a full solar cycle for him to be at full charge.<<

The Autotroopers had been patrolling for quite a bit, and as with most uneventful patrols, had begun to chatter. Some of it was the usual gossip between Autobots, the rest was mostly about how surprising it was for Omega the freaking Supreme to be around. Everyone was mildly confused to an extent, but if the big guy was around, things were going to get better.

None of the Autotroopers in this particular patrol had realised that Mirage had vanished, being too busy with their gossip. They also didn’t realise that they were being shot at until the bolt struck the ground next to them. The six Autotroopers all immediately turned around with their guns, ready to fire, just as Mirage unveiled his location on the nearby hill. As the invisibility faded away, he walked down towards the patrol squad.

“As much as I am reluctant to take part in this, it is imperative that we, as an army, stay alert and wary of our environment. There may not seem to be any hostile activities at the moment, however, this should not deter you into lowering your guard.”

The Autotroopers lowered their heads and apologised. Mirage was quick to talk back to them. “I do not accept your apologies. Manners maketh mech, and I want all of you to improve yourselves until you no longer have to apologise for when you slip up.”

As the patrol continued, Mirage looked up to the sky and wondered what the fate of this planet would be. It would be an undeniable shame for our species to ravage yet another world. He sighed deeply.

The communication wasn’t so much unexpected since Pharma knew he was pushing the boundaries of not just the guardian’s damaged systems, but also the resources of the city.

He’d also endangered his patient, though not in the way other doctors would claim. He’d made sure Omega Supreme’s processing center was good to go before flipping the switch. Did that allay any potential risks? No, but he did feel it was worth it. At least, to Prowl and the war movement.

Still, that didn’t stop his indignation from rising at being questioned by a… builder.

Swallowing his resentment at any implication, he switched to his lecturing tone he saved for the mechs that preferred to not listen to his instructions. >>Neutro, my boy, I did indeed reactivate him prematurely. It seems he had information vital to our defensive efforts. Prowl is speaking with him now.<<

Knowing he should change his tone to one of reassurance, he found the transition a little more difficult. There was too much at stake for him to be sidetracked, but he couldn’t allow his patient and those helping him to repair Omega Supreme to lose their focus.

Like I did, he thought, inwardly cringing at the realization.

>>Once Omega’s finished being debriefed, I shall see to it he enters his dormant state to replenish his energon faster. Until then, it’s important that we take extra precautions so as not to damage any sensitive areas in the event he… shifts again. Until then, Neutro, my boy, keep up the exemplary work.<<

With that, Pharma turned his attention back to Omega Supreme and Prowl. Perhaps, I need more of a subjective outlook? He thought it over for a brief moment, then decided he was on the best course. For the moment, at least.

When Blaster’s communication came over the standard Autobot frequency, Pharma would’ve rolled his optics if he was able to. Everyone’s trying to be a doctor today.

Sideswipe paused with his energon partway to his lips. “Seriously? Since when did Blaster get into psycho-babble logic tweaking?”

“You don’t agree?” the fembot asked as she was turning to report back.

Sideswipe shrugged. “It just strange coming from him. Gotta wonder if he’s hiding something. I like his taste in music, though. Mech knows how to have a good time.”

The femme smiled and shook her head. “I’m going to report in and see if anyone knows what’s going on.”

As she walked away, Sideswipe called after her, “So you’ll tell me, then?”

“In your dreams. I’m sure you have your ways of finding out.”

Sideswipe watched her for a moment, then turned his attention back to his drink. Let someone catch you, and this is the thanks I get. Looking around at the various looks he was getting, he shrugged. “What?”

When their attention went back to what they were doing, he decided to follow her advice and find out through other channels. He had to admit he was also curious as to how Broadside was doing with his Autotroopers. >>Broadside, do you have any clue what’s going on?<<

As soon as he sent the message, he found himself wondering why he even cared. It wasn’t like it would prevent him from trying some new moves on the ‘Cons the next time he saw them.
