Autobot City Construction Site – Outside Shuttle Longevity

Pharma paused at the opened door of the Longevity and took in the sight around them. While things had progressed since he had led the charge in removing the diagnostic machine, it still looked much the same, though not as chaotic.

Of course, there was one mech he needed, but wasn’t looking forward to dealing with that was waiting for them.

“Pharma,” Landfill said as cheerful as ever and nodded at the CMO. At seeing Arclight and Bluestreak, his demeanor changed slightly and his vocalizer conveyed his joy at seeing them. “Bluestreak, Arclight, welcome to Earth, my friends. It may not look like much now, but we’re building a city any Cybertronian can be proud of.”

Oh, isn’t this just wonderful. We have work to do and mechs are standing around chatting about what will be. Primus help me, what will be if I had as little drive as these mechs. Pharma nodded and motioned to the diagnostic machine. “Yes, it is good of you to welcome them to this… wonderful endeavor. However, at risk of upsetting the festivities, we have an important task to complete, so, if you don’t mind, Omega Supreme is waiting…” His voice trailed off as he motioned for Landfill to hurry up.

Landfill nodded. “Of course, Doc.” With that, he transformed and backed up to the side of the ramp so they could put the machine in his bed easier.

Grateful at Landfill’s surprisingly high level of understanding of the situation. If only he understood cleansing. “Thank you, Landfill.”

Once the diagnostic machine was loaded and Landfill started across the landing area toward Omega Supreme, Pharma turned his attention to another line of thought as he walked after Landfill.

"Bluestreak, my boy, yours and Arlight’s help as been extraordinary. As a reward, I would be honored to buy you both a pint of energon. Perhaps, you wouldn't mind sharing more details about the Constructicons being a combiner team? Until then, I am curious to know who struck the decisive blow? I assume you were victorious since you did say a group could face… Devastator, I believe you said, and succeed.”

Brawn’s processor buzzed with ideas as to how to manage the goings on at the Autobot City site. He’d never envisioned himself as a leader or anything. He had long considered that he’d been built solely to bash Decepticons, but this new challenge did appeal to him. He’d served under the best mentor an Autobot could ask for in Optimus Prime for longer than he could remember. Something was bound to rub off at some point. Wasn’t it?

He didn’t know about that. He didn’t have near the patience Optimus did, but he supposed Grapple had selected him for this task for a reason. Probably a glitch. Can’t trust those non-combatant types.

That brought forth the idea that he may have his new status yanked out from under him. As much as he wanted to give Grapple the benefit of the doubt, embarrassing him would be the perfect embarrassment. The thought caused his fuel cells to churn, but he doubted Grapple would be so petty. It wasn’t in his nature.

The mech was too overwhelmed to plot something like that.

With that thought dealt with, it quickly faded as he turned his resources to the other tasks at hand. Aside from the construction aspect, which he thankfully had full faith in Grapple to handle, the one thing that nagged at him was the city’s security. Sure, there were weapons for them to use if attacked, but were they really ready?

As much as he doubted that the Decepticons knew of the would-be city’s construction, he was willing to wager half a ration of energon that they’d find out soon. Being in the middle of nowhere was a reasonable safety measure, but what would prevent them from doing a quick scan from orbit for Cybertronian lifeforms?

But that’s what the fleet is for, ain’t it? he asked himself as he rounded a corner. The mere thought of relying on others galled him to the point he thought he smelled smoke from a blown circuit, but his internal diagnostics showed everything was functioning as it should. Not that he’d say anything otherwise. He wasn’t that kind of mech.

What do I know? I’m more likely to tear down a load-bearing wall before asking if it’s important. Everyone knows that, especially me.

He knew he couldn’t allow that weakness to interfere with what they were doing. Too many were counting on this city being built to do otherwise.

Right, piece of energon cake. No pressure. He would’ve rolled his optics had he been in his robot mode.

The more he thought it over, the more he believed what he wanted and what the city needed meshed. The only problem was their resources, but that wasn’t one of his problems, or was it?

Scrap, it is. He groaned as he entered the city’s center construction area. I’ll figure something out. I hope.

He ignored the urge to throttle Grapple for assigning him this duty as he came to a stop and transformed near Grapple and the others. He paused, allowing his processor to slow down and focus on what he wanted to do. “All right, Grapple, since you appointed me Site Commander, I’ll leave you to do what you do best.” Turning to look at Springer, he continued, “I think it best if we took steps to make sure we have some form of security in place. We don’t need a ‘Con or other whatchamacallit stumbling across us with our recharging ports stuck in the air. Springer, I’d like you to set up some form of security. I want us to be able to defend ourselves if need be.”

Wow, did I just say all that? I’m impressed. He refused to acknowledge the thought telling him he was surprised, too.

~~~
“Sure, just leave me behind!” Gears shouted as Brawn pulled away from him as they entered the city’s construction site. Not that he really blamed him, but it would’ve been nice to have Brawn ask if he needed anything else.
Not that anyone ever notices. I always have to call attention to it, he huffed to himself as he turned toward where Neutro and his team were working. It was good to see the progress they’d made so far as it also meant they were one step closer to having the big guy (Omega Supreme) up and running. Though, he couldn’t help but wonder about what having him and the others would do to their energon supply.
Hope Grapple’s already taken that into account. His thoughts shifted to what Brawn had said about his promotion and, Scrap me, this should make things interesting. He chuckled to himself at the thought of Grapple and Brawn working out the technical aspects. Now that would be a show worth seeing, though not in the front row. It’ll be best to be outta range.
He stopped near the Neutro and said, “I have some supplies you mechs may need, Neutro. I can make another run if you need anything else, preferably not material based.” The last part he said as miserably as he could.
"Yes. Those go just over there. Fine, fine," Grapple said as the buildbot whizzed past him, more girders in tow. "And why am I talking to you? You're a drone."
Grapple continued on, referring back to his blueprints for phase one of the city.
“All right, Grapple, since you appointed me Site Commander, I’ll leave you to do what you do best.”
Grapple looked up briefly, noticing that Brawn had transformed nearby for a moment. He gave an agreeable wave and a smile before returning to his schematics. He hoped he picked the right mech for the job. Command was a burden, Primus knew Grapple didn't want it. Springer was likely the most qualified, but he'd just returned from a mission--a rather dangerous one at that--and so Grapple hadn't wanted to overwhelm him. Brawn was just as combat oriented, and Grapple was sure he'd seen him in the presence of Optimus Prime more than once. That had to earn him some notable level of trust. Yes, he'd be fine. And that would leave Grapple to do what he did best--build.
Sandstorm walked along the edges of the rocky outcroppings. So, all this was gonna become Autobot City, huh?
Yeah, I guess I can see it, he thought, looking out into the distance. For better or worse--Sandstorm didn't have much in the way of an opinion on that particular mech--Prowl hadn't put in an appearance since they'd arrived. He supposed it was only a matter of time though. Hopefully the debriefing process would be over quick and they could move on to their next wreckoning.
I'll smash Decepticons any day, but this is pretty good livin', Sandstorm thought as he looked up at the puffy white moisture accumulations set against the backdrop of the azure sky.
Arcee appeared in the work in progress city with a shimmer of light. As her body settled itself and she regained her balance, she looked around the place. Standing up straight and taking a gander at the place, she let out a sigh of awe. It seemed Grapple and his crew were well on the way to making the city something truly grand. Sure...by the sights and smells of it all, it still had a long way to go, but this was more than a good start. For being such a strange planet and very different from their own, this little place seemed almost like a slice of the home world.
'Now...on towards my first destination here....', she thought to herself, looking around at the various mechs as she walked through the area. She noticed in the distance, the huge hulking figure of Omega Supreme. 'Well, with him here, security is pretty much taken care of already!', she thought. He looked like he could use some rest and definitely some repairs though. What had happened on the big ol' guardian's last mission? Well, she could always ask later. The good thing was that here, unlike up in orbit on the Guardian, there seemed like plenty of things she could do. Of course she would have to follow the proper chain of command for such things, and the engineers and maybe Springer, would be in charge of that.
"Oi gents!!", she said aloud as she finally spotted them. Springer...tall and green with a bit of yellow, and Grapple, orange and with that crane appendage of his. She smiled lightly and walked up to them, before stating, "Arcee, reporting for duty! Gimme something to do, boys. I've been totally bored."
Pharma followed alongside Landfill as they crossed the space from the Longevity to Omega Supreme, his thoughts lost in the nuances of the combiner tech. He made a note to send a communication to Ratchet and ask his old friend about his knowledge of the technology. As brilliant as Ratchet was, Pharma doubted he was interesting in the technology. Who then to ask?
Perhaps, Ratchet can recommend someone. That Wheeljack, perhaps? The idea had some merit, as Wheeljack’s reputation for being an out-of-bounds thinker and tinkerer preceded him everywhere. In some ways, Pharma was irritated at himself for not dealing more with the inventor in the past. Of course, it was hard to ignore the fact that Wheeljack was a builder. Maybe not at the same level as those currently around him, but that changed little, in his thinking.
That brought up another thought. If he did contact Ratchet or Wheeljack, they would need to be mentioned as resources once his research was complete, and that endangered the accolades he’d receive as well as the gateway off of this Primus forsaken mudball, for how could one be truly appreciated when accepting help from others?
Now, if he could somehow get his hands on one of the Constructicons, or, better yet, an Autobot that was undergoing the procedure, he could conduct his research without insight or fear of having his progress stolen to help another’s work.
Are there any combiner Autobots? he thought, once again chastising himself for not updating his database since leaving the Trion.
Of course, he would be far more gentle with a fellow Autobot on his table than a Decepticon. The Decepticon was expendable to him, existing simply as a means to sharpen his own skills and knowledge. While such actions were against the Article 7 of the Autobot Code, he was a firm believer in the ends justifying the means. Especially when such things involved the Decepticons, ending the war, and advancing medical science to heights never seen before. Yes, a few Decepticon sacrifices would be more than worthy of the ends. Whoever wrote that code had never seen their atrocities, I’m sure.
He was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn’t realize they had reached Omega Supreme and stopped just as he was about to walk into the guardian’s side.
“Is everything okay, Pharma? Maybe you need an energon break?” Landfill asked as he idled next to Pharma in his dump truck mode.
Pharma remained quiet for a few astroseconds as he reorganized his thoughts once more, selecting those not currently needed to be accessed later. With that done, he cleared his throat, playing down his embarrassment. “No, I shall be fine, my boy. Thank you for your concern.” Focus. My patients are more important than any personal concerns.
Turning to Bluestreak and Arclight, he said, “We should connect this to one of his maintenance ports. Give me a hand, will you?” he asked, reaching into Landfill’s truck bed for the diagnostic machine.
His energon pump tripled its pace and he hesitated as his arms slid over the edges of Landfill’s bed walls. He was certain he felt... something cling to him from Landfill.
When this is over, I am taking a cycle-long oil bath Glancing at the filth covered dump truck, his optics blazed a bright blue for a moment before they returned to their normal shade. If there is a mech deserving of this disgusting world, it’s you, my boy.
Hoist exited the bounce area, seeing Arcee leaving ahead of him. Huh, didn’t expect her of all bots to be down here. Either way, it was fine. He saw his good friend Grapple up ahead, and he seemed to be severely occupied. Perhaps it was time for Hoist to break up his workload.
Striding over to him, he put his hand on Grapple’s shoulder. “Can I help you out with some of this, Mister Grapple?” Hoist chuckled at the human prefix he’d given his friend.
Neutro looked over at Gears who inquired about helping.
"Right now, Gears, we aren't making anything. We are managing and increasing the energy collectors and converters to compensate for Omega Supreme. Depending on the readings, we might have to build more collectors. The first on our list is our geothermal collectors. They are our primary source of energy collection. After we get done with those, we will head to the solar panels, and after those the wind turbines. We have yet to install in hydro turbines due to the major drilling those will take as well as the ecological effect they would have."
Neutro looked over to Groundpounder for the current readings.
"The big guy is going to put the base in the negative energon within the next couple of cycles. We can increase the capacity here by 20% within safety regulations. However, this will barely keep the big guy afloat. This is if we increase the output of every geothermal collector. Hopefully the wind turbines can ce increased. If I understand the solar technology, those are operating at max capacity right now."
Neutro looked over the numbers then at Groundpounder. His teammate may prefer breaking things but was also good at diagnosis.
"I agree with your assessment. I will have you and Crumble stay here to make the adjustments. I will take Takedown and Gears here with me to the wind turbines. We might have to build more wind turbines and solar collectors. With all the construction to the base of the mountain already, I don't want to put any more geothermal collectors in the ground."
Gears sighed to himself. This is what I get for being so helpful. He detached from the hover sled and transformed. “Sounds like you have everything in order. Not that I’d be of much use, but I’ll be happy to help where I can.” Anything is better than going for more supplies.
Gears’ optics widened at hearing that. I knew our reserves were low, but I never thought we’d been that close to running out. Regret wasn’t a new emotion for him, but feeling it toward their Autobot City endeavor was. Many a night, he spent staring out over what they were constructing, asking himself what kind of glitch had infected whoever had this idea. He was sure he knew the mech — he’d been serving for too long not to know who would be responsible — but he’d blocked it out at some point.
Especially after being assigned here.
Looking around, he did feel a sense of pride he hadn’t expected at what they’d accomplished so far. It didn’t deserve to fall apart because of an oversight like sending so many there at once. But he’d keep that to himself. If the others knew he’d never hear the end of it.
Gears perked up at hearing his name and assignment. He nodded along. It sounded like a change of pace he’d enjoy. “Sounds good. When do we get started?”
One of the most difficult things Brawn had ever had to do was ask for help. It was the one thing he refused to do, even in the most dire of circumstances. He would rather have his spark ripped out by Megatron than have another come to his rescue.
It was a matter of honor, code of the gladiators. It was how a mech was meant to live.
So, it was something he hoped to instill in those in Autobot City. It was an idea to help each ‘Bot to become inspired to achieve something they wouldn’t normally be capable of. Did he expect all of them to buy into that thought process? No, but he knew the military based mechs would understand. They worked together as a team, but each team was only as strong as its weakest mech.
This isn’t so bad. I think I was molded to be a leader. No wonder Prime and the others always hog the glory. A smile played across his faceplate as he waited for Springer’s response. Looks like I owe Grapple an apology.
He was about to say something to the orange mech when movement off to the side caught his attention. Turning, he saw Arcee approaching with a swagger he didn’t like.
Pfft, a kid? What am I going to do with a kid? This ain’t a toy drive. Despite his thoughts, he decided to wait and see why she was there. He doubted anyone from the ships would be sent down there unless there was a reason. At least, he hoped so.
Arcee wrote:"Oi gents!!"
Brawn rolled his optics at the way she moved toward Springer and Grapple. At least I never acted like that. He crossed his arms, pleased with himself until another thought intruded. I don’t think I did. Wonder if there are any security vids from that far back left…
Arcee wrote:"Arcee, reporting for duty! Gimme something to do, boys. I've been totally bored."
Another thing he hated was being passed over without a second thought. He could hear Windcharger saying something along the lines of, “You’re a minibot, buddy. What’d you expect?” and he fought against the urge to take a shot at his friend the next time they saw each other. Still, it did have some merit, but from the look on Arcee’s face, he could tell her focus was elsewhere.
For the briefest of moments, he hesitated. In some ways, this was a challenge to his new authority despite her not knowing about Grapple’s decision. Still, he did what he always did when faced with a challenge: attack it head on.
“Bored, huh? I’m sure we can find something for you, Arcee. I was just talking to Springer about setting up some security. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.”
Maybe I was too easy on her? He shrugged it off, accepting that a gentler hand was needed. I can definitely get used to this.
As Grapple watched various beams being lifted into place, a new voice temporarily broke his concentration.
"Oi gents!! Arcee, reporting for duty! Gimme something to do, boys. I've been totally bored."
Grapple turned to regard the Autobot warrior with a pleasant smile. Yes, life was indeed starting to thrive on this little slice of the planet. He could only look forward to the time when the Autobots had a suitable command outpost with which to defend this world.
Before Grapple could venture an answer, Brawn was on the scene and taking to his newfound role as effectively as Grapple could have hoped for.
He then felt a sudden hand on his shoulder and his spark almost jumped out of his chest.
“Can I help you out with some of this, Mister Grapple?" That voice. He knew that voice perfectly well.
"Hoist! Adaptus be praised, I'd hoped you'd find your way down here. I wasn't going to order you, of course. I assumed you were busy with other things and would get down here when you could. And here you are! Things should go even more smoothly now."
Pharma glared at the back of Landfill as he looked for a place to rub whatever it was that had covered his hands during the offload off on. Unfortunately, he was extremely limited unless he used the oil absorption pads he had on him in the event Omega Supreme sprung a leak.
Primus, why am I thinking of that? Don’t I have enough to worry about? Like getting this… this… scrap off of me!
Pharma turned toward Omega Supreme and for a moment considered doing the unthinkable, but reason quickly returned and he let out a low groan. “Very well, we all have to make sacrifices,” he said, in a near inaudible whisper, then turned back around, his usual demeanor back in place as he faced Bluestreak and Arclight.
“Well, my friends, it looks like we our work cut out for us, but you’ve down an excellent job so far. Even you, Landfill. I don’t know how we could’ve done this without you.”
At hearing the praise, Landfill transformed and nodded his appreciation. “It’s the least I could do. Do you need anything else?”
An thorough scrubbing and disinfecting would be nice. Somehow, Pharma kept himself from saying that, instead, he looked thoughtful as he tried not to look too excited to have the filthy mech leave them be. “Not that I can think of off hand, but perhaps “Neutro or Grapple could use your assistance?” He hesitated, not wanting to add the next part, but decided it would be best. Can’t be too harsh on the boy. He did help, after all. To offset his mood and ensure he didn’t sound bitter, he put forward his best bedside manner. “If not, it may be best if you stay close in case your services are needed again, my friend.”
At first, Landfill paused at hearing the compliment. Had it been any other mech, he would’ve laughed off Pharma’s previous jokes. Now, he wasn’t so sure. Still, he felt it better to part amicably rather than create any ill feelings between the two.
He seems genuine now. Maybe he was just joking. Suddenly having to take care of this many mechs with medical needs can’t be easy.
As soon as he had the thought, Landfill’s feelings towards Pharma changed enough that he could smile and allow his usual warm spark to find forgiveness in even the grumpy old CMO.
“Thank you, Pharma. I’m happy I could help. I’ll stick around for a little longer, but my duties further up removing the earthen debris is still waiting for me.” As he finished speaking, he held out his hand.
Pharma paused as a fresh wave of disgust surged through him, but he swallowed his pride and extended his hand. Grimacing slightly as Landfill gripped his. “That’s… uh… a good grip there.”
Landfill tilted his head back and laughed. “It comes with the job description.” He then nodded at Bluestreak and Arclight. “See you guys around.” Turning, he paused as he looked between Grapple and Neutro, trying to decide if they needed his help. Seeing Hoist, Arcee, and Gears working with each of the two heads, he made his decision. “Looks like everything’s taken care of. Time to get back to the grind,” he said cheerily and transformed.
Nothing like a few good deeds to make a ‘Bot feel good. With a rev of his engine, he pulled away from the ships and repair crews. He still wasn’t too happy with Pharma, but at least they parted amicably.
Pharma watched Landfill drive off, surprising himself at how a sudden pang of regret struck him. Looks like he’s not staying close. Perhaps, he needs to clean out his receptors or grow a thicker exoskin. Shaking his head in irritation, he turned back to Bluestreak and Arclight and clapped his hands together. “Well, the hard part is behind us. What say we connect this to Omega Supreme and see how he’s feeling?”
In a flash of white, Kup appeared on the makeshift bouncepad that had been setup in the area and took a moment to get his bearings. He hadn't been on the surface of this planet since Uluru and the whole Fallen mess, but he couldn't help but be a little awestruck at how visually striking this planet was. Hopefully they wouldn't do anything to mess that up.
He supposed he could give himself a tour. He didn't like a lot of hand-holding. he could take care of himself, certainly after this long.
"Of course, Grapple. I intended to arrive sooner, but the situation with Prime left me with a lot on my hands. I was tending to the wounded as quickly as I could, so have my apologies for not making it down here earlier." He flashed a smile from behind his faceplate.
Hoist proceeded to ask, "What could I help you out with first? The construction on that side or the big guy there?" He motioned to Omega Supreme. "It's good to see this many mechs all working together."
"Oh, no no. No apologies necessary," Grapple said. "Perfectly understandable, given the circumstances. How is Optimus Prime, anyway? I'm certainly glad to hear he's alive, I heard what happened up there. Some of it anyway. Frightful."
Omega Supreme is also vital, of course, but I believe his needs are being met. I'd like to have a functional outpost and then a city as soon as we can manage. And yes! Pharma wrote:“Thank you both, your efforts shall be recorded in my medical logs for the powers that be to give you proper accolades.”
“Come, my friends. Landfill and Omega Supreme awaits.”
“We would appreciate that!” Bluestreak responded, giving a quick glance to Arclight before returning his attention to Pharma. “And, yes, we mustn’t keep them waiting.” The chatterbot then assisted Pharma and Arclight in moving the diagnostic machine out of the shuttle proper and down the ramp. Before they reached the bottom, Landfill greeted them. Bluestreak gave the tan dump truck a curt nod before helping to load the equipment into Landfill’s truck bed. Once that was done, Landfill headed off towards Omega Supreme.
Pharma wrote:"Bluestreak, my boy, yours and Arlight’s help as been extraordinary. As a reward, I would be honored to buy you both a pint of energon. Perhaps, you wouldn't mind sharing more details about the Constructicons being a combiner team? Until then, I am curious to know who struck the decisive blow? I assume you were victorious since you did say a group could face… Devastator, I believe you said, and succeed.”
“That would be great!” Bluestreak replied with a wide smile. “I’d love a pint of energon. High grade, I hope! Heh. As for Devastator, I heard over the wire that he was taken down recently by Grimlock and his Dinobots. So, it is doable if the combiner is overwhelmed. Of course, I’m sure the Constructicons will try to improve on their creation for the next time we face the gestalt. Hopefully, we’ll have a combiner of our own by then or at least Omega Supreme fully functioning at that point.”
The chatterbot talked Pharma’s audios off as they walked after Landfill to where Omega was still sitting idly in his rocket mode. Bluestreak then reached into Landfill’s truck bed to help the CMO carefully remove the diagnostic machine. Once it was safely out, the materials transport transformed and asked if there was anything else he could do. Pharma told him there was not and suggested that he help out Neutro or Grapple. After a brief exchange Landfill said his goodbyes and transformed back into his truck mode before driving off.
Pharma wrote:“Well, the hard part is behind us. What say we connect this to Omega Supreme and see how he’s feeling?”
“No problem, Pharma,” Bluestreak said as he moved into position to make the appropriate connections to the Omega Guardian. “I hope Omega doesn’t have too much damage to his systems. Powering him up won’t be the problem. It’s the repairs if they are extensive that could take a long while. Although, getting him enough energon could also be an issue. He’s so large and our supplies are limited. The more I think about it the more we need our own combiner to counter Devastator. Omega is a powerful force but he’s not much good to us if he burns through all of our energon reserves. Sigh.
Mirage wrote:“That sounds like a plan to me. I am not the highest in the chain of command here, but I do have some ideas. I trust that your skills are valuable, but would you be able to patrol the entirety of the valley? It might be a bit of a stretch for you. I supposed we could ask a few other mechs to aid. Perhaps we could ask one of the others who have recently arrived.”
Howlstrike was happy to see that Mirage appeared to be accepting of him and even friendly. The blue and white mech made no mention of the tracker’s former allegiance as a Predacon. Mirage simply treated Howl as one of the ‘Bots. As for the spy’s question, Howlstrike rubbed his chin briefly before responding. “Well, no, not the whole valley. I’m not that good. Heh. But I could cover a good amount of ground if necessary. Help would be a plus, of course.”
Mirage then greeted Broadside, a rather large Autobot if Howlstrike had ever seen one. Howl was more than familiar with the big triplechanger, but had never worked closely with him before. Broadside seemed more than willing to help them out, asking about what kind of security they were discussing.
“We need to secure the valley, Broadside,” Howlstrike replied to the huge mech. “It’s currently covered with a holo-shield that makes this whole area look like a mountain range and it’s designed to keep the locals out. But, there could be weaknesses that could be exploited. I was going to patrol around the perimeter, but it’s too much for just me, Mirage and Springer to handle by ourselves. You’re jet mode could provide another set of optics from the air. And if we happen to encounter any Decepticons, your big guns will definitely come in handy. Heh.”
Arcee wrote:"Arcee, reporting for duty! Gimme something to do, boys. I've been totally bored."
Howlstrike overheard the pink femmebot’s vocals and the subsequent response from Brawn who had suggested that she join the security detail if she didn’t mind getting her hands dirty. The former Predacon chuckled under his breath as he raised one clawed hand into the air and waved over to Arcee. “Dirty hands over here!” Howl called out with a toothy grin.
In a sudden flash of light, several bounce beams struck the ground, revealing the forms of Prowl and a handful of autotroopers. Astroseconds later, many more bounce beams followed behind the military strategist, planting more than three dozen additional autotroopers onto the site.
Once the effects of the bounce had subsided, the black and white looked around and took in everything he could see. Construction had been going well by the looks of things. Prowl could see the rocket mode of Omega Supreme laying nearby with Pharma and Bluestreak hooking up some kind of equipment to his hull. There were many other mechs moving to and fro doing a variety of tasks. The Longevity was also situated close by as was Sky Lynx.
Prowl’s optics finally settled upon Grapple and Springer, the duo were standing just across the clearing. Without further delay, the prick-bot swiftly walked over to them as his contingent of Autotroopers remained where they had initially materialized. “Springer, Grapple, good to see you both. I will be overseeing operations down here from now on, especially when it comes to the repairs of Omega Supreme. I understand that the Longevity encountered an incursion of Decepticons that were not from this sector. I want a full debriefing, Springer. Spare no details. I want to know exactly what happened out there.”
The military strategist paused for a moment so that his words could sink in. Prowl then gestured behind him. “As you can see, I’ve brought a full brigade of Autotroopers to help secure the valley. Utilize them as you see fit. As for Omega, I need him operational as soon as possible. At the very least he needs to be brought back online and conscious so that I can debrief him, as well. I have many questions as to why he is here and why Scorponok’s forces were after him. These questions need to be answered sooner rather than later.”
Hoist nodded. "From what I heard, he's doing fine now. He's under Ratchet's care, so I don't think there will be much of an issue. As for some of the mechs caught in the crossfire... It wasn't a pretty sight, but I and a few other medics got everyone patched up as much as we could."
Grapple wrote:"The construction, please. You have a good optic, as always, old friend. That area you indicated was just where I was going to send the buildbots next. The green bot smiled at his good friend Grapple. "I see. I'll go and get started on that right away." Hoist flipped and changed into his alternate mode. "Yes. It does feel like the old days. The terrain isn't too bad either, it's definitely grown on me." He rolled off to the construction site, picking up some materials on the way, and joining the rest of the builders.
Ya know, I could get used to this, Brawn thought as he thought over possible questions that would come his way from Arcee and the others. While he thought he’d been clear in his request, he’d learned over the millennia that there were always questions. They ranged from the mundane to bravado (he chuckled to himself as those usually came from him) and he was prepared for anything.
Then the flash of light and more Autobots than he wanted to count appeared. Among them was Prowl.
Ah, scrap it. I was just starting to have fun. Hope they can manage with someone that knows what they’re doing running things. He chuckled at the thought as Prowl continued,
Prowl wrote:“As you can see, I’ve brought a full brigade of Autotroopers to help secure the valley. Utilize them as you see fit. As for Omega, I need him operational as soon as possible. At the very least he needs to be brought back online and conscious so that I can debrief him, as well. I have many questions as to why he is here and why Scorponok’s forces were after him. These questions need to be answered sooner rather than later.”
Brawn didn’t fault Prowl for ignoring him. Not entirely. He would’ve done the same thing, after all, Who woulda guessed anyone would put me in charge of anything? I wouldn’t.
Doing what he’d seen the officers do previously, Brawn approached the strategist to officially hand over his title. “Well, guess it’s all yours now, Prowl. Let me know if you need any help.” A small smirk played across Brawn’s faceplate at wondering how long before Prowl’s logic circuits would cross as his having been in charge of something.
Bluestreak wrote:“That would be great!” Bluestreak replied with a wide smile. “I’d love a pint of energon. High grade, I hope! Heh. As for Devastator, I heard over the wire that he was taken down recently by Grimlock and his Dinobots. So, it is doable if the combiner is overwhelmed. Of course, I’m sure the Constructicons will try to improve on their creation for the next time we face the gestalt. Hopefully, we’ll have a combiner of our own by then or at least Omega Supreme fully functioning at that point.”
“Of course, my boy. Nothing but the best.” Pharma returned his smile, though his thoughts remained turned inward. He knew he appeared aloof at times, but despite everything going on, Pharma made sure to have his receptors pay particular attention to what Bluestreak said. He knew the ‘Bot’s reputation as a chatterbot, and he couldn’t argue with that on any level after the few minutes in Bluestreak’s company, but it was a welcome diversion to the grime he was sure was slowly working its way into his joints and servos. Not to mention what it’d do to Omega Supreme should it get into his systems.
The technical side of him knew he was exaggerating, that the miniscule amount of dirt was a regular occurrence and one of the main reasons for regular maintenance, but he couldn’t shake his dislike for anything… not cybernetic in origin. Even with the leaking oil, energon, and grease he’d take anything cybernetic over organic any day. Except when one refuses a regular oil bath.
He shook off the thought. It was becoming an obsession, and one he was more than happy to put behind him.
As best he could.
He shifted his thoughts to Bluesteak and his rambling. The main reason he didn’t want to stop Bluestreak’s rambling was the more some talked, the more information they gave. It was something most in the medical field learned over time, since few patients were calm when faced with possible surgery or other maintenance.
“Indeed, my boy, having Omega Supreme fully active will go a long way to protecting what we’ve constructed here so far. It is good to hear they can be beaten,” he paused, debating with himself if he wanted to chare his thoughts on how to advance the combiner technology as they prepared to connect the diagnostic machine to Omega Supreme.
Bluestreak wrote: “No problem, Pharma, I hope Omega doesn’t have too much damage to his systems. Powering him up won’t be the problem. It’s the repairs if they are extensive that could take a long while. Although, getting him enough energon could also be an issue. He’s so large and our supplies are limited. The more I think about it the more we need our own combiner to counter Devastator. Omega is a powerful force but he’s not much good to us if he burns through all of our energon reserves. Sigh.”
As they worked to connect the device, Pharma’s grip slipped momentarily, but he quickly recovered. Had he been thinking of it, he would’ve blamed it on the coating he was sure Landfill had left behind, but instead he found himself looking at Bluestreak in a whole new light. His previous concern had been addressed by ‘Bot’s comment, so in a comforting, yet frustrated tone, he decided it was time to voice his concerns. “Your concern is valid. My greatest concern, Bluestreak, my boy, is the advances the Decepticons — the Constructicons, in particular — will make in their established science while we flounder about. I personally think it would greatly benefit us to have one of them to study. But that’s above both our pay grades, is it not?” He finished by chuckling, as though the thought was a random topic that came up during their conversation. He doubted he sounded convincing.
His lack of love toward the Decepticons wasn’t a secret, but his desire to achieve something that would lift him above the level of even his friend and mentor Ratchet was. The vast opportunities of assignments he would be offered if he could perfect the science astounded even his logic circuits, nearly causing his processor to glitch.
If he could achieve his goals and help hurt the Decepticons, he saw little point in keeping to himself. Now, how he’d do that was another topic all together.
It wasn't long before Hoist joined them. The large green truck-former strode right up to Grapple and asked what he could also do to help, as Arcee stood there nearby, watching and listening, waiting with as much patience as she could for some sort of orders. She had to smirk a little though at Hoist calling the yellow crane-truck bot "Mister". That was certainly cute.
No answer came from Springer or Grapple, and more and more people seemed to huddle around them, making Arcee wonder to herself if she'd even have time at all to catch up with Springer. It irritated her. Yes, she wanted something important to do, and helping with whatever needed to be done around here would meet that need....however, what she might have wanted more than that, was to talk to Springer. However, it seemed that would have to wait. He was too busy directing stuff here, and also, the small but burly old little mech, Brawn was talking to her.
She turned her attention to the smaller but older mech, looking at him quizzically as he spoke to her with an air of elderly authority, so to speak. He said to her,
“Bored, huh? I’m sure we can find something for you, Arcee. I was just talking to Springer about setting up some security. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.”
That made her smirk. She folded her arms about her chest and she said just as confidently back to him, with an edge of enthusiasm, "You think I'm scared to get my hands dirty old mech? Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't handle myself. So, security? Sure. I'm game. Just fill me in with the details.", she said. She was really eager to prove herself to her fellow Autobots that she was more than just a pretty face, or a cheer leader. Sure, she could help boost the morale of others, but she could fight. She'd done so before, and she'd do it again. The more experience she got, the better. That's why she went through the training to learn how to use a variety of weapons and fighting styles. Training had been much better than sitting around, after all. She just hoped that she wasn't seeming too edgy. It wasn't really her intention to be like that.
As she was pondering her approach, she had missed Howlstrike talking to Broadside and Mirage about what they'd be doing to secure the city. However, when he had raised his voice so she could hear him, it caught her attention, snapping her out of her personal thoughts, and re-focusing on the reality of the matter.
“Dirty hands over here!”
, came the canine-like voice of the ex-Predacon as he waved at Arcee. The pink bot ran over to where he was then with a bounce in her step. She had heard of this guy, but she'd never met him before. Looking over him, he was very interesting looking indeed. Beastformers weren't very common in the Autobot ranks.
"Hi there, Howlstrike is it? I'm Arcee. What's the game plan?", she asked. This was it! Whether or not they'd be fighting any cons, at least she could make herself useful, and she was prepared for whatever would come her way.
The sudden voice caught Brawn’s attention, pulling him from his thoughts. He couldn’t help but smile at the sassiness in Arcee’s voice. Now this is a mech I can respect. Shrugging, Brawn said, “Just started to set it up.” He motioned to Prowl. “He’s the one you’ll want to talk to. But if it helps, this ain’t such a bad world.”
Given how he knew most of the others felt, he just assumed the didn’t like a challenge. They’d rather build a city and “civilize” the planet rather than explore and experience the challenges it offered.
Like the mountain roads. A rare blissful look passed over his faceplate as he thought back to his travels and contemplated exploring further. It wasn’t like he had a scientific reason for doing so — that took all the fun out of it — he just needed something he could match his brawn against. Something tangible that didn’t involve carrying scraps around and stacking them somewhere to create order or this or that.
Howlstrike wrote:”Dirty hands over here!”
He glanced over at the gathered group. Wonder what they’re up to? He shook his head, deciding that he’d shown himself to be responsible for the couple of astro minutes he’d been in charge and running off now would wipe all of that away. Glancing at Prowl, Grapple, and the others, he grunted, “Looks like I’ll be staying here for a while.” Just don’t expect me to haul things or I’ll show you some nickel plating.
"I see. I'll go and get started on that right away. Yes. It does feel like the old days. The terrain isn't too bad either, it's definitely grown on me," Hoist said.
"I'm finding that to be true also. Quite a remarkable world," Grapple said, agreeing with his old friend and colleague. "Call me if you need anything. I won't be far."
The intermittent flashes of new Autobot arrivals did Grapple's spark good. Not that long ago, this place had more or less been an afterthought. Now it was finally starting to hum along. The latest arrival, Prowl, only helped with that feeling.
Certain other Autobots had given him a nickname that Grapple wasn't keen on repeating. He'd never found him to be that way. But, of course, their paths didn't tend to cross all that often--except in circumstances such as this one, where something needed built. Abnd even then, Prowl had tended to leave Grapple to his work. What more could he ask from a supervisor?
“Springer, Grapple, good to see you both. I will be overseeing operations down here from now on, especially when it comes to the repairs of Omega Supreme. I understand that the Longevity encountered an incursion of Decepticons that were not from this sector. I want a full debriefing, Springer. Spare no details. "And good to see you, sir," Grapple said, greeting the senior officer but deferring to Springer before he spoke any more. He certainly possessed much more critical information in regards to Omega Supreme than Grapple did.
Another beam follows Kup's and Groundbomber steps off the makeshift platform. She looks around, having never stepped on this planet before and allows herself to smile. It was as beautiful a world as she'd seen, lush greens, deep browns, and other vibrant colors. Groundbomber felt at peace.
Elsewhere, Indygo finished her self guided tour of the facilities. She was not impressed. This was from where the grand Autobot conquest was to begin?
Though she desperately felt like sulking, Indygo forced herself to walk with a lightness in her step and pasted a genuine looking smile to her faceplate. She sent a quick communique to Redline to join her, then located the highest in command: Prowl.
As for Groundbomber, she caught up to Kup, taking up a position behind him and to the side, almost like a bodyguard.
Howlstrike's answer was a good one, at least to Mirage. Broadside seemed to be on board with the idea as well. And much to his delight, Prowl had arrived with a good amount of Autotroopers.
"All of you have my gratitude for being willing to help in these matters. Prowl, Springer, I understand you have higher matters to deal with, so if I may, I would like to take these mechs out for border patrol."
Mirage turned to all the mechs who were ready, and the numbers had seemingly grown to include the likes of Arcee. "Welcome to Earth, Arcee. Your help will also be appreciated here.”
He stood with his arms behind his back, facing everyone. “Arcee, please take a few Autotroopers to the northern side of the border. Another few will follow me to the southern half. Howlstrike, your tracking skills would be most useful towards the eastern edge of the valley, so take some of the Autotrooper scouts along with you. Broadside, it would be helpful if you could be our eyes in the sky and circle around the valley. Everyone should keep their comms open. The rest of the Autotroopers should remain within the construction site and nearby Omega Supreme. This way, we can ensure that all areas are secured. All good?”
Mirage folded into his alt mode. “Let’s roll.”
Optrix didn’t know why he thought this would be a good idea. Maybe it was his brief altercation with Gears earlier that had sparked his curiosity. Maybe it was sheer boredom as there were only so many times he could recount the same items, totaling the same tally each time, of course.
Or maybe I let them push me out of my own office. He tsked to himself as he trudged along the road leading from the inventory depot to the city itself. It wasn’t too far, and it gave him a chance to study the local life forms. He found it fascinating how so many different things could evolve on a world so different than Cybertron, and thought that it may be time for him to indulge some when he had the chance. Though it meant his chances of crossing paths with the barbarians that thought continuing the war was the right thing.
He’d tried studying the sky a few times since arriving there, but the sun was too bright for him to pick out celestial objects as more than smudges during the day, so he’d been forced to leave that for the end of the local cycle. It was frustrating as it’d forced him to retool the schedule for he and the other inventory mechs, which, oddly enough, left him with even less time. It was yet another thing he had been forced to grown accustomed to. I just have to find another interested in the meantime, he had thought, shaking his head.
Distractions weren’t something he was good at or even liked, but when the rest of the inventory mechs serving under him approached him about taking some time to relax, he’d nearly laughed.
They didn’t.
They hadn’t when he’d accosted Gears, and instead of avoiding him, they thought it wise to approach him about doing something to soften his approach.
At first, he’d been reluctant to listen as he hadn’t taken a true break in… how long was it again?
He shook his head, just as he’d done when they approached him. As much as he preferred having mindless automatons to work with, he guessed when he couldn’t immediately call up the time when he didn’t torment others as a way of enjoying himself. He could’ve ordered them to leave him be, but something in his programming urged him to listen. After all, what could it hurt?
They’d allow some mech or organic to walk in and take what they wanted without the proper documentation. I shouldn’t be gone long, though, or I’ll be searching for missing items for the next vorn.
Making his faith in others apparent to himself once more, he felt better about visiting the city. If the counts didn’t match up when he returned, maybe the higher ups will finally give him the automatons he wanted. They, at least, could follow orders and do their jobs.
I hope they hand energizers, torches, and materials until their pumps’ content. Of course, they may have wished the best for him, but he doubted it. Everyone involved with the two warring factions had their own agenda. Plain and simple.
With a new energy in his step at finally getting his way, he entered the construction site and froze.
Where in the name of Primus did all of these mechs come from?
His single optic whirred as it enhanced the magnification. He reset it at seeing their weapons. Battle ‘Bots? The war was due to come here at some point, I guess.
He shook his head and continued into the city. I shouldn’t have allowed myself to become excited at studying this world after all.
Out of all the mechs wandering about, some working and others discussing whatever it was that made their worlds revolve, he singled out those gathered as near the center of the area as possible. He recognized Grapple, an agreeable mech that only wished to build things of wonder, and a few others he dismissed as soon as he saw their weapons or burn marks.
He paused just behind the group, wondering how Grapple dealt with so many barbarians. One in particular caught his optic. A rather thick looking green mech with a… laser for a hand 9Hoist)? Did he see that right? But he was talking amicably with Grapple?
Surely Grapple wouldn’t have sunk so low as to have a barbarian as a friend? He’s been working too hard. I will accept no other reason for such… He couldn’t bring himself to finish the thought as it would have meant changing his view toward the builder.
After remaining quiet for a short time, he cleared his vocalizer. “It’s good to see you again, Grapple. Anytime you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask. It is a priveledge to be a part of your extraordinary designs.” When he finished, he nodded toward Hoist. Keeping interesting company nowadays, are you not?” Turning to face Hoist, he crossed his arms. “Optrix, quartermaster extraordinaire.” If you wish items to build with and wage war, he didn’t add. He did have a job to do, after all.
