Beast Wars Neo finally available with English (Fan) Subtitles in 2019!

Karyuudo Fansubs (the anime fansubbing group that has previously provided the Transformers fandom with complete English subtitled releases of Car Robots, Zone, Micron Densetsu, Beast Wars Second and its movie, the Beast Wars Metals movie, and Scramble City) has announced their next English subtitled release of another Japanese Transformers series. It is none other than the long-awaited Beast Wars Neo!

Full announcement below:

Coming in Late 2018, the final chapter of the Japanese Beast Wars saga, Beast Wars Neo, will be released by Karyuudo Fansubs with English Subtitles.

Q&A

Q: Why will this take so long to complete?
A: Like everyone else in the world, we have families, jobs and lives outside of subtitling. As with our other releases, we take our time to ensure you're receiving the best and most accurate translation possible.

Q: Don't you have a more accurate release date?
A: Unfortunately not at this time. We're projecting a late 2018 release to factor in life commitments since that usually pushes our time frame back. Any questions on "when will this be done" will be politely ignored. :)

Q: Why not release the episodes as you complete them?
A: With many series, there are themes and terms that are covered over many episodes and sometimes disappear and pop up later on. Sometimes we find ourselves going back to alter a translation to ensure the story makes sense and flows smoothly. In the end it's better to complete all the episodes and feel 100% satisfied that we're translating the dialogue as it was intended.

Q: Do you require any additional assistance in regards to grammar, timing scripts, etc?
A: Thank you, but we're covered on all areas for this project.

Q: Will you charge for this?
A: No. We do this simply because we love Transformers, and want to see this long awaited series completed.

Bonus Q&A
Q: "I guess you guys beat me to the punch! Congrats on finishing Beast Wars 2! I would like to help in ANY way to finish Beast Wars Neo if I can by contributing the first 10 subbed scripts that I have..."
A: Since August of 2016, we've seen several comments come in such as this one above where individuals are offering to help complete Beast Wars Neo. To this date, we haven't seen one person actually complete this series. We could make several assumptions, that they got busy, bored, or were simply trying to get access to our resources in order to take credit for contributing to the release in some way. Let's be honest here, if you can translate 10 episodes of a series accurately by yourself, then you can easily translate the other 25 episodes in no time without our help. :)

A small update has been given about this release.

Very small.

After much deliberation, it has been decided by Karyuudo Fansubs that their subtitles will be utilizing the particular spelling of the name of the Maximal cobra that has been presumed to be his intended name all along: "Colada".

As opposed to using the nonsensical and phonetically-inaccurate spelling of "Cohrada" that the Beast Wars Sourcebook went with.

Small progress report from Kary:
Well folks, just to give everyone a small update here... we've reached the 1/2 way point on the episodes being 100% translated. Hopefully we'll keep up this momentum and be done before the years end. Please look forward to Beast Wars Neo, and thank you for your patience! :)

Status report: There's been an unfortunate delay in the release.

Hey Karyuudo Fans,

Many of you have been anticipating the release of Beast Wars Neo since we announced it earlier this year. We wanted to give you an update since it's now getting closer to the end of 2018.

Unfortunately, we've had several set backs over the past few months, due to unforeseen circumstances, such as work, family commitments, and health (ie: our translator Taka-chan had pneumonia and was out of commission for some time). Given this, we'll ultimately have to push the release into 2019. We don't have an exact date yet, but we will provide an update shortly before the release date.

At this point in time, we've completed 21 episodes out of 35, so we've still got a good number to go. We realize that many of you were looking forward to having a release date before the end of 2018, however, given the current time it takes to complete a translation of each episode, we don't believe this will be possible.

We really appreciate everyone's understanding and support over the years for our projects. Our team always aims to give the fans out there the best possible translation. For the Transformers community, this is something we've all waited almost 20 years to see translated into English. Our team is committed to ensuring you're delivered what we've promised.

While you're waiting for our release, you may want to pre-order that Big Convoy re-issue to support Takara-Tomy. Or possibly start picking up some other Beast Wars Neo toys on the second hand market before the prices may go up!

For now, here are some screen captures from each of the episodes we've complete thus far.

Thank you again!
Karyuudo

As of this typing, Beast Wars Neo isn't ready for release just yet. It's almost done, though.

As for all of Karyuudo Fansubs's other subtitled Transformers media releases, there are a few options.

If you're the kind of person who wants to actually own digital media, having your own copies of the files saved to your hard drive to watch at your leisure without needing to connect to the Internet, then you can download the torrent files of each series (Car Robots, Legends of the Microns, or Beast Wars Second) or each special (Zone, Beast Wars Special, the Beast Wars Metals movie, or Scramble City) from Karyuudo's own blog, where they have links available for downloading each one with whatever torrent client you have ...if the torrents themselves are still healthy, that is.

OR

If you're the kind of person who prefers to simply watch digital media online via streaming, without first downloading any files of your own, and needing an Internet connection in order to watch anything, then you can simply visit Karyuudo's YouTube channel on which you can find much of the subtitled Transformers release that they have put out so far, with their Playlists section being the most handy for finding all episodes and specials in an organized manner. What's more is that every episode's/special's description section even contains all of the Translation Notes for said episode/special that would otherwise be included in a PDF file offered with each downloadable torrent file, so that aspect is thankfully included with the YouTube releases.

Though, it looks like their YouTube channel does not have everything they have released, but it does at least have all of Beast Wars Second (and its movie), Car Robots, Zone, and Scramble City on there.

I feel like this thread has been quiet for too long and could use another status update.

As of April 26, Episode 35 (the final one) is in the process of being edited by Karyuudo Fansubs. As it's something of a clip show, there's a LOT of dialogue for them to go through in this episode.

No release date has been announced yet, but all 35 episodes have now been subbed, so they're really close to completion.

This has been a long time coming and an even longer time waiting (20 years!).

And so far, the only known item to be included among this release's extras is a full English translation of the Legends LG-EX Big Blue Convoy pack-in manga (since it serves as a Beast Wars Neo prequel). It's exciting to think of what other extras may be included.

FAQ (Also known as please read first before asking questions) :)

Question: What do I need to download this?
Answer: To be able to download these, you will need a BitTorrent client. We recommend either qBittorrent or Deluge. Both BitTorrent clients will do the job with no advertisements or hidden surprises.

Once you install the application, you're ready to download from the torrent. Download and open the .torrent file, add it to your torrent program, and the application will do the rest.

Once your download is complete, you can view this release with VLC or Media Player Classic

Question: Will you release these on DVDs?
Answer: Sorry, we have no plans to do this.

Question: What are you planning on subtitling next?
Answer: No idea at the moment, but since there’s lots of untranslated material out there, I’m sure we’ll find something.

Question: Was this series very difficult to translate?
Answer: Yes and no. If a non-native Japanese were to translate this series on their own, there would probably be something lost or misinterpreted in the translation. Thankfully for our team, we have a wonderful friend and teammate named Taka-chan, who is a native born Japanese and fluent in both languages. She, like all of us, is a huge Transformer fan, and took a lot of time out of her busy schedule over the past year and a half to script and translate each episode. If there’s anyone you should be thanking for this series to have been translated, it’s her. :) On top of translating, there’s research that was needed to be done, since sometimes there’s references to old TV shows and movies in the series, and this needed to be explained. All of these instances have been recorded in the translator notes.

Question: Why are some of the character’s names different than certain Transformers fan and resource sites as well as from the IDW Beast Wars Sourcebook?
Answer: There are many Transformers fan sites out there which are great resources, with many fans devoting much time to put the information out there to help others understand / fill in the gaps on many different Transformers series. With respect to everyone, fan sites are not official (and neither are we) on how the character’s names are written. There is also some disagreement with how the IDW Beast Wars Sourcebook was created; and how many fans didn’t agree with the way some of the character’s names were spelled and their bios’ were written, since most of reference material was based from a fan page. For example, Colada is spelled Cohrada in the IDW Sourcebook. This is due to Ben Yee’s writing the character profiles based off an early VHS sub of a few episodes almost 20 years ago. After some discussion and a poll on the Allspark forums, it was decided to correct this by using the spelling which is named from the second of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar’s (El Cid) swords, the Colada. At the end of the day, it’s how one interprets it based on the katakana characters.

Question: I would like to customize the subtitles for myself; how do I do that?
Answer: There’s a site called MKVToolNix which hosts various tools to extract the subtitles with. Once to extract the files you can edit them with a subtitling program called Aegisub. We’ve also included the fonts we used in the package so that they appear the same in your customized authored version. Generally speaking, most fan groups like to burn or hard subtitle their files into the video to prevent others from using them. However, we don’t follow this same practice and leave ours as soft subtitles, allowing one to turn them on or off while watching.

Question: I’d like to use your subtitles and translate this show into my native language and publicly release this. Are you OK with me doing this?
Answer: Absolutely! We kindly ask that you contact us either by PM, or on our Facebook page before doing so, as well as providing us the credit in the subtitles with your release. The more that others can get to watch and enjoy this series in their native language, the better it is for the entire community. :)

Question: For some reason, it doesn’t look like VLC is using the fonts properly. How can I fix this?
Answer: You can either copy all the fonts provided in the Extras folder into your fonts folder within C:\Windows\Fonts or right click on each of them included in the package and install them. Unfortunately, since we don’t use either OSX or Linux, we cannot provide any advice on how to install these on those operating systems. However Google can help you with that :)

Question: Are you getting compensated somehow?
Answer: No. Just as we did Car Robots, Zone, Legends of the Microns, and Beast Wars II, we do these projects for free and for fans to enjoy, and are not to be sold in any shape or form. This series in particular is considered one of the last holy grail's among fans, and we’re excited to be able to finally share it with everyone. We hope everyone appreciates the hard work and hundreds of hours that went into creating this.

Question: I have something I want to ask that wasn’t covered here.
Answer: By all means, do ask, and we’ll do the best we can to answer.

Looks to be that way.

YouTube also allowed Karyuudo to upload all of Car Robots, Beast Wars Second, Scramble City, and Zone. The only ones YouTube didn't allow were Legends of the Microns and the Beast Wars Metals: Convoy's Great Transformation movie.

There's no license for the show in the West, anyway.

Right, I had not thought of that. Will definitely give it a watch, afterall I own a bunch of cells from that show. Would be fun to see what scenes they come from.

We really hope the fandom enjoys this series. A lot of hard work went into translating it.

Our translator Taka-chan deserves the most credit, as it's because of her, we have an accurate translation of this story.

Bear in mind that, when going into these two shows, expect something not nearly as good as the American Beast Wars cartoon, as the Beast Era was aimed at much younger audiences in Japan. But, while Second and Neo aren't as strongly written as normal Beast Wars, there are still some gems to be found here and there in both.

The main thing I want is to enjoy a Heinrad of any type and a gunshy Stampy.

Stampy is on the TFcon list this year. Pretty high in the Beast category actually

You can get it here, I doubt getting these two at TFcon would be cheaper: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Takara-Transfor ... SwoudW66v3

I'm not really in a rush though, and it would be cooler to find at a convention by chance, especially when it's time to start saving up for it

Meant to post this here before, last Tuesday:

Okay, I'm on Episode 29 now and, after all these years of such limited accessibility to both this show and Beast Wars Second, I think it's safe to say that the Western fandom has blown something out of proportion (quelle suprise!).

In the BWII movie, Optimus Primal is treated as a "legendary Supreme Commander" by Lio Convoy's teammates, revered and awed as some greatly respected figure. This movie, being one of the scarcely few pieces of JBW media that the Western fandom had access to thanks to Ctenosaur Fansubs, helped fuel the initial misconception that the "Convoy" of Beast Wars might have been treated by Japan as the same "Convoy" of the G1 cartoon. Of course, Beast Wars Metals would debunk this when it showed the two to be separate individuals like in the English version.

Still, though, this "legendary" status that Optimus Primal held in the BWII movie remained, which felt at odds with his depiction in Beast Wars as merely a lowly ship captain. Yet, Japan still regarded him as a Supreme Commander in their version, a title that to a Western fan seemed more prestigious than the captaincy rank Primal held.

When it was later confirmed that BWII and Neo actually took place eons after Beast Machines (rather than contemporary to the "three centuries later" hometime of the BW cast, as the Western fandom originally believed), this "legendary" status of Primal's suddenly made some degree of sense retroactively, since he alone saved all of Cybertron from extinction by Megatron, sacrificing himself at the end of Beast Machines. Indeed, this was even incorporated into the Convoy Council's backstory in the Legends LG-EX Blue Big Convoy pack-in comic.

But... here's the thing.

ALL THREE Convoys of the Beast Era are treated as "legendary" figures.

Out of the gate, Big Convoy is called a "legendary warrior", known for being a "One-Man Army" who won many front-line battles singlehandedly. And later in the series, he's called a "Supreme Commander" in regards to his being in charge of Break, Stampy, Longrack, Colada, and Heinrad. A guy put in charge of merely five (later six) individuals is given such a lofty title, when he's pretty much just a mere ship captain. Sound familiar?

What's more, Beast Wars Neo takes place, what, a few years after Beast Wars Second? Is that all? If so, then that's how long Lio Convoy has been MIA. And yet, here in Episode 29, he too is called a "legendary warrior", the exact same wording used previously to describe Big Convoy (Stampy even points out this notion, and Mach Kick later calls them "two legendary warriors"), with Big Convoy's teammates even going gaga over Lio Convoy with the same kind of awe and wonderment that Lio Convoy's team had for Optimus Primal in the movie.

It really seems to me like this whole "legendary" thing really isn't all that special, certainly not to the extent that the early Western fandom made it out to be, what with how few folks in the West actually got to experience these two shows back then. Same goes for being a Supreme Commander. Sure, that actually meant something in the G1 era (being the highest-ranked sole authority in the Autobot army), but by the Beast Era, any blue-helmeted mouth-plated novice could be one, and all it gets ya is an average-sized spaceship and a small crew of misfits. And you apparently get to be called "legendary" by the next guy's crew. :P

In short, they're as liberal with giving the title as the Europeans were with giving 10's in Rank back in the G1 to G2 period
The resident Rewind... well, half of one
