Weapon: Twin Sonic Cannons
We are very close to wrapping up the year of 2012 so let's look back fondly of what we received shall we?

Let's discuss shall we? And to jog everyone's memory, here is a small rundown of Companies that saw release in 2012 (note that the list is most likely not complete, it's tough keeping track of all these things)

Companies doing full figures:
iGear, FansProjects, MakeToy, TFC, MasterMind Creations, Impossible Toys, Perfect Effect

Companies doing Kits
Head Robots, Beezleboss, Renderform, CrazyDevy, Maiden Japan, Junkion Blacksmith, MGS, Dr Wu,

Is your memory jogged? Good! Lets see who you think is:

The best 3rd Party offering in 2012
The best 3rd Party single figure of 2012
The best 3rd party upgrade kit/add on of 2012

And finally what are you looking forward to most in 2013?

Now that we've handled the best, what about the worst? What do you think is:

The worst 3rd Party offering in 2012
The worst 3rd Party single figure of 2012
The worst 3rd Party upgrade kit/add on of 2012

Please speak only of what you have experienced. We can all be armchair critics going by pictures and reviews, but unless we've handled something ourselves, we aren't in any position to judge it.

Weapon: Twin Sonic Cannons
Best offering of 2012
I believe it to be the MakeToys Devastator. I spent money on TFC's Hercules and was not impressed by it. I found the aesthetics of the figure to be not in line with the other combiners that I have on my shelf at this time. Giant on the other hand fit perfectly, I find that it's easy for him to hold whatever pose I put him in, and individually the robots, while not really a match to their animated counterparts, work quite well with transformations that show creativity.

Best single figure of 2012
Mastermind Creation's Shockwave. That thing is a beast of a figure. First of all he's 15 freaking inches long and almost as tall in robot mode. The transformation is creative, and while I'm not interested in doing it again it felt pretty durable for the most part. He's big, clunky and despite it all, pretty articulates and can hold some good poses.

Best add on kit of 2012
It's a pretty simple kit, but I'm giving it to Renderform's upgrade to Goldbug. In reality there's very little difference between his Goldbug kit and his other work such as Hubcap and Bumper, but it's that Goldbug at least got some speaking time on the cartoon and his position in the Throttlebots that bumped him above the others.

Worst offering of 2012
Pretty much anything I got from Shapeways, which isn't a heck of a lot. In retrospect it's not the designers fault for they are usually pretty good but rather the Shapeways offerings and service that left me wanting. The cheapest option is pretty much sandpaper, and the higher quality option isn't much better. Being spoiled by Renderform's offerings has made me think twice about using Shapeways again.

Worst single figure of 2012
I'm going with Maketoy's Giant's Crane figure. They made some pretty big sacrifices for its chest-mode. And while it looks good supporting Giant's head, it's pretty much just hanging out there in vehicle mode, and in robot mode that crane attached to the arm is pretty unwieldy. It does its job in combined mode, which is what %90 of collectors display it in, but it kills the playability factor of the figure by itself.

Worst add on kit
Dr Wu's upgrade for Ravage and Hound. It was cheap to buy, and I still felt like I payed too much. The quality was shaky and everything felt rough, similar to what I felt in a Shapeways-produced product that was hastily sanded and sloppily painted. I understand that his quality really hasn't improved much which is a shame because the stuff he makes looks good, but handle it wrong and everything's ruined.

and finally What I'm looking forward to in 2013
One thing that stands above all others - Sixshot. MMC has proven that they can tackle something like this, and in my opinion they are surpassing FansProject now in the 3rd Party game. I understand that they had to do some reworking of the figure due to problems that cropped up in the test shot, and I'm fine with that. He will be worth the wait and I hope one day there will be a Quickswitch made as well.

I haven't bought any third party stuff ever, apart from one two months ago, in pre-order.

Patiently waiting for it to ship. It was going to be Best Figure/Offering of 2012, but due to its release delay it'll have to be Looking Forward to in 2013: MakeToys Mobine Series MB01C Paladin/Chaos.

Weapon: Null-Ray Rifle
Best offering of 2012
iGear's PP-05 Medical Specialist/Warrior Specialist - These are THE best interpretations of the 80s cartoon with current design of both Ironhide and Ratchet. Vehicle/robot modes are great, transformation was a lot of fun (even if I did fold those side pieces in when cautioned not to), and even if not completely necessary you've got a full arsenal between the two of them to choose from. These two look great on either a Classics or MP shelf, I don't think I could blame anyone for buying two sets just so neither display was lacking. The only real beef was that the initial release was supposed to be Winter 2011, but weren't ready for another 6+ months.

Best single figure of 2012
Tie - PP-05/MMC's KM-05 Knight Morpher Airborne Squad Screecher - Not much more to add about PP-05, but Screecher has a great design and aesthetic which separates him from the rest (including needing to have his own little place for display). I must warn you to be careful, because those are some sharp points he's sporting, and quite a few times he gives you that "oh crap!" moment when you're trying to transform him.

Best add on kit of 2012
TFC's Rage of Hercules set/Renderform's Banshee Blade - Rage adds that little bit extra G1-goodness with proper forearms and HUGE gun, the Banshee Blade has a really nice design and incorporates a nice energon-esque blade made out of translucent plastic instead of either painting plastic or just having 1 color.

Worst offering of 2012
Upscaling iGear's line of mini-bots. While there are more molds that we haven't got our hands on, the upscaling of Hench and UFO causes some concern as there is a bit of "knock-off" quality going on with Hench. Also, prices jumped up 100% compared to Rager and Spray. Does iGear go back to work on those previous releases, and do the upcoming bots get a bit more detail appropriate to the new size, only time will tell. Along the same lines, where are the other MakeToys mini-bot releases? It's been over a year since their first release of Hover and Bomber, would love to see the rest at some point.

Worst single figure of 2012
There are previous years where this was pretty easy, this year I can't single out a figure.

Worst add on kit
CDMW-33 Sea Brigade Power Parts (Waist Piece) - I paid HOW MUCH for a small piece of plastic?!?! It does a decent job of beefing up Piranacon (Toki Wartooth - "Hey guys, checks out my new codpiece!"), but hard to justify the price except that I picked up some other pieces on sale. At least it's not one of the Predaking upgrades that actually threatens the figure itself. I wish Crazy Devy would sell sets of pieces instead of their normal strategy, but as long as fools like me keep buying then the model continues to succeed. I can also second Mkall's choice of the Dr. Wu upgrade for Hound/Ravage. Either the pieces needed to be cast in the proper plastic color, or the paint not so thick - trying to put the items in hand for Hound or the sides of Ravage caused scrapping of the paint apps on the weapons. Maybe if we could get some die-cast, like they are doing with the Prime swords, that would help.

Most frustrating purchase of 2012
You like that, Mkall? I jacked your thread by adding a category :CON: . Okay, presenting my case - ToyWorld's Hegemon. I really like this figure, but my frustration lies in how complex transformation can be (including getting pieces to line up properly). Also, the swirls in the plastic make it seem a bit cheap. Finally, why are there so many useless translucent red plastic pieces on this guy? To be fair, I do like both his robot and alt modes as they both fit my idea of a Megatron, and I'm not upset with the purchase.

What I'm looking forward to in 2013
FansProject Stunticons set. This product is going to be the best bang for your buck gestalt next year, even considering Uranos and either of the Predacon sets. Now if only we can get a true reveal of Motormaster... Would also like to see the release of HeadRobot's Darksol, as well as get my hands on MechIdeas' Demolition Crue.

Best offering of 2012 - Hercules (ultimate game changer for the 3rd party scene both in size and G1 likeness. This pretty much set the bar that we don’t need Hasbro to own a combiner)

Edit: One of the greatest things about TFC Hercules is the vast options that are available for him from Crazy Devy, Dr. Wu, Reprolabels, Shapeways, and the rage kit. Not to mention a niche SG repaint. What other set has spawned so many options for collectors to choose and customize ? Definitally the 3rd party product of the year in my opinion.

Best single figure of 2012 - Hegemon (So damn awesome because of his G1 likeness that he got TF Source/BBTS scared to sell him)

Best add on kit of 2012 - MGS-03 Scout Upgrades for Universe Hound and Ravage (instead of just another head and gun set, they tackled the annoying shoulder cannon that leaned forward without help from their backpack. They also made the perfect Ravage missiles in size, G1 likeness, and silver paint)

Worst offering of 2012 - I didn’t have bad experiences with official 3rd party products but ill throw this one out there - KO Shadow Scythe set (Loose left leg that wouldn’t hold tight and the replacement was better but still a little loose. Armd don’t hold on well and does not include chrome spoiler/tail fins for CHMS Wildrider)

Worst add on kit - Renderform Go Go Meow missiles – very nice sculpt but just too big for Ravage. A little smaller and the set would have been awesome.

Most frustrating purchase of 2012 – Maiden Japan Junkion parts (order took over a year to complete but when I got this large order he did an awesome job)

What I'm looking forward to in 2013 - MMC Predaking, TFC Uranus, FP Menasor, FP Headmasters, Igear Mini-bots, and 3rd party Jumpstarters.

Best offering of 2012
This is a tough category, but I have to go with the completion of Hercules. That was WAAAAY back at the beginning of 2012, but it was like obtaining a holy grail. This was a figure I've wanted since I was a kid, and now I have him, and I love having him on my shelf.
Honorable mentions go to MMC for their HoS line (so much DETAIL!).

Best single figure of 2012
I have to go with the PP05's. Yea, I know, technically this is 2 figures, but since they are mold mates, I think it is OK to lump them together. THESE are what a Masterpiece figure should be. You not only get an awesome transforming figure that looks like his onscreen counterpart, but you get an array of gear that allows the owner to customize his display in any way that suits his taste.

Honorable mention to MMC Shockwave. The only reason he didn't eek out the win were those damn wings. I feel like I'm gonna break them when I transform him. But still a really cool figure.

Best add on kit of 2012
I also like the Renderform Goldbug add on. Nice, simple, did what it needed to do. Thumbs up!
Honorable mention to Echo's Rage of Herc upgrade set :
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/echotransformer
This modifies the Herc Rage set to look more proportioned.

Worst offering of 2012
They are charging WHAT for a MaidenJapan set??? The set of Maidenjapan add-ons that were not appreciably discounted from ordering directly from him, and getting your choice of colors and parts. Had these sets been more reasonably priced, many of us would have stormed the doors to get multiples and built up the ol' Junkion armies.

Worst single figure of 2012
I can't comment on stuff I didn't get, so of the stuff I bought, I have to go with Hegemon. Yea, his bot mode looks great but there was a lot I didn't like about this guy. His lack of proportion to the CHUG line was a big one. His finicky transformation, which wasn't helped by his cheap-feeling plastic, and his not-quite-right gun mode make him the worst of what I acquired.

Worst add on kit
Again, speaking only for the stuff I bought, the purple barrel kit for Herc. The kit itself was fine, but like everything from Crazy Devy it is just overpriced. The fact that the tabs are different sizes from the original make it a but frustrating too in that you can't mix the colors should you want a checkerboard pattern.

What I'm looking forward to in 2013
So ... many ... combiners!!!
I'm really looking forward to Superion. Not quite the anticipation I had for Herc, but close. I just got word my 2 limbs just shipped from RK, so they should arrive just as the calendar switches pages.

I'm also curious to see what FP has in store for Motormaster. That will be a make-or-break factor for me on that set. I was a little disappointed with Assaulter/Broadside, so FP needs to ramp it up a bit IMO.

Can't wait to see more of the 2 Predacon projects either.

So there is a lot to look forward to in 2013!

Best offering of 2012
The Iron Army figures. Real fun little guys and make a lot of the PCC figures stand out in a non-horrific way.

Best single figure of 2012
Didn't really get any figures this year outside of Iron Army and JB Heads. Function X arrives this year, but I likely won't see it until early January. So the Iron Army wins by default; specifically the tanks. Those guys are decent G1 style figures with a few little surprises. The feet doubling as cannons helped.

Best add on kit of 2012
Beelzeboss' Heroic Duo. Absolutely loved the set. Really fleshes out Sideswipe and Red Alert. The Iron Army PCC limbs are a close second. As limbs they are fantastic.

Worst offering of 2012
The G1 Devastator add-on Power of Destruction kit. Just didn't fit my G1 or G2 Devy very well.

Worst single figure of 2012
N/A

Worst add on kit
Power of Destruction, as seen above.

Best offering of 2012
I agree with folks about Green Giant. Armored Battalion (Deluxe Insecticons) are a close second.

Best single figure of 2012
Weapon Specialist.
Grind Rod (close 2nd). Who would think that a Throttlebot could be this interesting?

Best add on kit of 2012
Junkion

Worst offering of 2012
The G1 Devastator add-on Power of Destruction kit. This looked terrible and there really was no reason for it with all the other Devastators.

Worst single figure of 2012
Impossible toys - Alligatorcon. Overpriced, overly simple, limited range of motion, lack of detail.

The best 3rd Party offering in 2012

It has to be Maketoy's Giant all the way. A hugely ambitious undertaking, and not reliant on any number of 'upgrade' kits to make it look decent. They really knocked it out of the park, with the combiner looking magnificent, and scale just right.

The best 3rd Party single figure of 2012

FansProject's Warbot: Assaulter. I just love this figure the more I mess around with it. PLEASE PLEASE make Blitzwing and Sandstorm next, FP

The best 3rd party upgrade kit/add on of 2012

I really like the Beelzeboss upgrade kit for Red Alert/Sideswipe. Actually pretty good value considering you get 2 guns, 2 rocket launchers, shoulder pieces, piledrivers and a brand new headsculpt for Red Alert!

And finally what are you looking forward to most in 2013?

Has to be the FansProject stunticons!

The worst 3rd Party offering in 2012

iGear continue to underwhelm me with their silly oversized minibots range, which they have needlessly spoiled, with Hench being the absolute worst. Sparse paint apps and crappy plastic make it a real turkey. See Seibertron member Paul053's amazing custom for how to do a decent Brawn (pic below)

Image

The worst 3rd Party single figure of 2012

Not sure if Perfect Effect's Kingbat was 2012 or not, but what a stinking turkey of a figure. I managed to break it within 2 minutes. Rare for Pefect Effect, who are usually great.

The worst 3rd Party upgrade kit/add on of 2012

The Shapeways White, Strong and Flexible material is not great, and is very hard to sand, drinks paint etc. However the Ultra frosted detail is much better, and vastly improved my Superion by giving him hips!

I'm probably a bit late to the game here, but I've got opinions!

The best 3rd Party offering in 2012

Maiden Japan Junkion Kits, hands down. They're fairly expensive, but they're a full body Junkion/Wreck-Gar game changer, and effectively convert either Classics-styled bot into an actual G1-styled figure. The detail is great, and although fragile, are the only add-ons that completely change the aesthetic of the bae figures (IMHO). I hope to see more of these.

The best 3rd Party single figure of 2012

Can't say that I was entirely pleased with my purchases, but I'll cover that below.

The best 3rd party upgrade kit/add on of 2012

Right behind the Maiden Japan Kits is the SXS Cold Weapons Mace for WFC Megatron. Finally, an excellent companion piece to Corbot's War Axe! This thing is large, pointy, and features plenty of nice translucent purple plastic. Best of all, it can actually be held by Megatron, in some epic battle poses with Optimus. I can't tell you how much this single weapon adds to WFC Megatron - it's perfect.

What are you looking forward to most in 2013?

Terminus Hexatron. I don't own any MMC figures (not into HoS), but Terminus looks amazing, and will fit in with Masterpieces. I wish he were an inch taller, as he looks to be about MP-10's height (he'd have to be taller to be in true Masterpiece scale), but he looks epic enough to justify the buy.

The worst 3rd Party offering in 2012

Dr Wu's Sage head for Optimus. It looks great, but broke 30 seconds out of the box. The part where you reinsert the screw did not have a big enough hole to accommodate the screw, and then the piece broke off. The thing smelled rank, too, as if the resin or whatever material was used had not yet hardened. Come to think of it, the material was rather soft. Either way, points for looks, but twice as many negative points for functionality.

The worst 3rd Party single figure of 2012

Hegemon & Hercules were both disappointments - I bought and sold both. The plastic quality just wasn't up to snuff. Even minor joint movement seemed to wear away the plastic. I just didn't feel like putting up with what felt like flimsy figures.

The worst 3rd Party upgrade kit/add on of 2012

I actually have not bought an add on I haven't liked - outside of the Dr Wu Sage kit, of course.
