Bizarre/Frustrating problem with Leader Starscream

Hi there. If anyone can offer a suggestion on how to fix this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

I just bought a HFTD Leader Starscream off eBay, brand new still sealed. Everything about the toy is awesome except for one thing. The sound effects/lights will not work if the battery cover is closed/tightened all the way. I have replaced/used multiple batteries, so it is a problem with the figure itself.

If I leave the battery cover off, the effects work fine, but once I start to screw it down past a certain point, they stop working completely. It's not even a point that's "too tight", I literally have to leave the cover up for it to work, and it doesn't look seamless. Anybody have any idea why this is happening?

Could be that a wire's come loose and the screw is pressing down on it, or the terminals aren't sitting right once the door's closed. Unless you know what you're doing, I don't recommend disassembly. He's full of screws, small parts, etc. Just an absolute mess once in there.
