The article makee clear the exemption is for people of colour who are concerned they will face harassment and/or racial profiling if they wear a mask, which is the underlying problem. The other group it states are exempt are those with an underlying medical condition where wearing a mask may make it difficult to breathe. Cast your mind back to the dying words of George Floyd who's dying words "I can't breathe" and we're back to the real problem.
Cast your mind back further to 2012 when Trayvon Martin was shot by a guy who was later acquitted because he said he felt threatened by an unarmed w4 year old walking away from him.
So in answer to your question, no I don't want this because I don't want a high melanin content in the skin to have to be grouped with medical conditions which may make wearing a mask more of a threat to their health than not wearing it.

That's alone is a good point but it have nothing to do with race.

Ad the "profiling" excuse is complete BULL because when everyone wear the mask, what's left to profile? So when they impose the mask to whites but they don't to blacks for such an empty excuse, they shooting themselves in the foot. Antagonising the races against each others even more, and looking down on blacks as inferiors who just can't take care of themselves without the White Savior.

Me, I'm white and I refuse to wear the mask. Make me feel like choking and it fog my glasses badly. Only if I'm required to be really up close and personal may I wear one.

You think profiling has any kind of logical basis? Even with masks required for everyone, police will still use the fact that a Black person is concealing their face to any extent as an excuse to harass them, or worse.

Again, I can totally understand the rationale behind the order, but I really think the better course of action for the county to take would've been actually taking some kind of action to keep the police from profiling people, preferably something like, iunno, defunding or abolishing them.

"Profiling" is effectively not based in logic. But "defunding" and "abolishing" is NOT the solution. Case in point, the places where the police is understaffed or overwhelmed are rotten to the core with criminality and become very dangerous places. "Abolish the police". And replacing them with what? Thugs and mercenaries? Don't be naïve. For starter, better formation of the staff is key, which require MORE funding.

I don't know how it work in the USA, but here in Canada, we have 3 kind of police not counting the military one. We have the local city police. Then the provincial police for the countryside and small villages. And finally, the federal police. If a case of criminality or abuse of force is found in a department of the city police, it's the provincial police who make the investigation. If the case come from the provincial, it's the federal who will investigate. No bias possible.

U.S. police departments are - hypothetically - 'watched' by their own Internal Affairs personnel, so basically every department is responsible for policing themselves. And most departments aren't large enough to staff a an IA branch, so they don't even have that. The number of layers of obfuscation that can come into force anytime someone tries to peel back the curtain are insane. Body cameras don't even help keep LEOs accountable, because cops have little concern the footage will be viewed by anyone that cares about what happened. About the only way to make anything happen is to put pressure on a politician that controls their purse strings. Hence, protests.

I thought it was something like that.
The Canadian system is not perfect but the USA could take example.

It's not really something we have a lot of choice in. Law enforcement agencies have carved out spaces for themselves in which they are very well insulated from any serious attempts to reform them or regulate them. On paper there are options, of course, but their professional unions shut down most attempts to do anything.

This is why you hear people floating the seemingly extreme solution of shutting down a department in it's entirety. The intention is not to experiment with a lawless society, but to clear out crap officers and establish new standards for departmental training, spending, reporting, and record-keeping, while taking away the union's single biggest tool for preventing all of that (the threat of a strike).

In the context of the 'bad apple' phrase, the idea is to dump out the whole barrel of apples, clean the scum and mold out of the barrel, and then go through the pile of apples, separate out the best ones, and put those good apples back in the barrel alongside some freshly picked ones.

Such an extreme reform is unfortunately impossible to implement.
It's the same thing over here, no matter the feild. Unions are now like mafia groups and they got all of us by the balls.

I don't think it's impossible, it's just takes time. A system this complex has to be taken down and replaced piece by piece. Start with hiring practices for new recruits, it's the easiest change to make. Then dive deeper into the system, going after regulations, procedures, and those who have been embedded for a long time, such as high ranking people in positions of power. Any time extreme changes like these are needed, it upsets the entire system (which is the goal here) and it can't be done overnight.

That's true. No huge changes can happen overnight. Especially in big organisations and even more in societies. For example, the French Revolution happened but it took almost 200 years for them to finally get their act together... for a still imperfect everything.

Well, without unions you just hand more power to businesses and industries, so pick your poison.

Ideally the U.S. government should be the only union we need - setting a living minimum wage, protecting workers' health and safety, etc., but right now it's all deregulate-deregulate-deregulate. It's bad enough in the context of environmental practices, but unfortunately that mentality applies to law enforcement as well.

Massive police reform wouldn't be impossible to implement though, it just has to be done department by department. It has been done. But making that happen requires political action on behalf of communities who often have very little political power.

The French Revolution should be taught even more at school at how just because you wave around some 'high concepts' against poopy political elites that you're going to end up doing all right. In fact, the French revolution was a miserable failure that end in even worse repression and political madness showing that just because you oppose crummy people, it doesn't mean you aren't crummy yourself. Or that people spouting nice-sounding rhetoric with nice sounding words mean nothing if they too go on an insane power trip.

But I suppose its controversial these days to say that just because you self-identify with a nice sounding label that doesn't mean you're not going to turn into a wannabe tyrant with an urge to purge.

Whenever someone says "all politics should be left off sites that we go to for escapism," they keep talking to reveal what they really mean is "I don't like seeing politics I disagree with." That also ignores that not taking basic moral stands is itself a political action.

As Ryan noted a whole month ago, we're at a tipping point--since this post, the recognition of racism across cultural industries like Hollywood and sports has gone mainstream, in areas beyond those that impact Black Americans. A year ago, it was considered nearly impossible that Washington's football team would change their name; now it's a near certainty.

A metaphor you could use for that tipping point is a crashing wave, and some posters are here holding their arms out to try to hold it back. I'm not going to tell you not to waste your time, and I'm not going to feel bad for you when you drown.
