The use of the car salesman quote from the 1st movie as the inspirational narration was utterly bizarre. Yet, it kind of worked.

Aside from the odd o chorus, it was fitting, as it tied Bee back to the very first movie mmediately. The Used Car lot scene was good writing in theory, just brought down by bad comedy. Scrap out the Chicken Costume crap, the Grandma, and what you got was a touch of foreshadowing to set up the “Their Coming to get You” story.

That’s the whole problem with that 2007 movie. There are a lot of gems there, but they are threaded together by long stretches of straight crap. Hopefully, this Bumblebee movie is a culmination of all those good moments from the first 5 movies.

The trailer makes it look decent enough, I had no interest in seeing Bumblebee before, and while the trailer hasn't wowed me it has piqued my interest just enough to put Bumblebee on my 2018 cinema maybe pile, alongside Aquaman and that Halloween reboot-sequel Blumhouse are doing. I'm not a fan of Starscream's new look from the quick glimpse we get of it, I know I should like it because it's GEEWUN, but I hope they keep at least some elements of his 2007 design.

Well ok then. This movie looks like it might actually have a heart, and some decency...did not expect that. Calling out a quote from "the future" was odd though, continuity be darned though, this movie may have the potential, critically speaking, to be *better* than most of the actual films in this franchise. Still it will probably get very little box office. If anything, hopefully paramount and Hasbro can use this model (if its good), give the franchise a break, then come back strong in a few years.

It's probably just for this teaser trailer, like how Revenge of the Sith's teaser trailer used dialogue and footage from A New Hope to tie it all together.

I dont know how to feel about this. Over the years ive grown really critical of the movies, despite how much I used to brainlessly praise them. On the one hand, this looks like it could, potentially, be good.
On the other hand though, it's set in the bayverse and thus any good it does is immediately pointless in the overall "story" since there's absolutely zero consistency between the films, and the transformers are being rebooted anyways. Worse case scenario, the movie is actually good, and does well, then what? Do they go back on the reboot? Decide to make more? It's a can of worms from where i'm sitting.

...Wow. That trailer was legit amazing.

Even as someone that actually liked the Bayverse (up until the raw, steaming mound of cinematic diarrhoea that was The Last Knight) this is exactly how I'd reboot the movies. Exactly. Just referential enough to bring up the G1 nostalgia, but still fresh and new. The designs look superb as well; they look nicely evocative of the classic designs, exceptionally visually appealing, whilst still looking right at home with the Bayverse aesthetic and thus quite "realistic" (I know some people really hate the Bayverse look, but when one considers how complex IRL vehicles are, how complex living organisms are, and thus how IMMENSELY complex a living mechanism that has to be able to physically disguise as a vehicle would be, I honestly don't see how they could look much different without resorting to horrendous amounts of "cheating" ala Transformium).

Also that Starscream design, homina homina. That's pure class. I want a good figure of that design, like, yesterday. Interesting that he's an F4 Phantom, too, especially with regards to scale; the Phantom is a massive jet (we have one outside the museum I work at and it's a biggun) and assuming he doesn't compress a lot- which in theory he could as jets are largely empty space in order to actually be able to fly- he's going to dwarf Bumblebee.

But yeah. I am beyond pumped. This guy, he gets it. I have nothing against Bay (I maintain most of the problems with the movies, especially TLK, are more down to the writers than Bay himself) but this? This is going to rock.

I hear a lot of people talk about the power of "positive word of mouth". Now I think it can work at times, especially on smaller budget films, films not based on IP etc...But for something like this I go back to...

Batman Begins came out in 2005. keep in mind, Nolan was not exactly the well known, highly praised director he is now. Also this film came out a full eight years after Batman & Robin, but most people were still soured over Shucmachers two awful Batman films. As a result, Batman Begins was definitely a sleeper hit. It was well received, but even positive word of mouth prevented it from being the major blockbuster it could have been. But of course, by the time The Dark Knight came out, the positive feedback from the previous film manifested itself.

Now I'm certainly not going to compare Batman Begins to Bumblebee, but come December, we will be a mere 18 (or so), months removed from TLK. Even if BB is more kid friendly, and has a genuinely good story, I don't see it as being enough to "right the ship" so to speak. I hope its a positive step for sure, but unless it makes a billion dollars globally (which I don't see happening), I don't think its going to jumpstart Hasbro and Paramount to put TF6 back on the movie slate.

I think the soft reboot sounds pretty reasonable if this does well. Retcon the previous movies and move on from here.

On the subject of Starscream, it’s funny what a little dash of color can do.

If it was just grey, you’d think it was a generic seeker or MAYBE a movie Thundercracker. But a little red on the intakes/shoulders tells you “This is Starscream.” And with designs as busy as the movieverse can get, quick visual cues and shorthands are important.

Agreed!

This looks great. I've literally not been this excited for a live action TF film.

Even going back to 2007 when I was most excited about it all, there was an uncertainty around the designs that tempered it all. This Bumblebee movie looks really solid.

I move that we refer to this as "The Sweet Boy Movie" in accordance with Yoke-san's wishes.

This looks good, and it gets the thumbs up from my five year old. I think this does show what can happen with the right writing team and director combo. Like black hat, I don't blame everything bad in the last movies on bay, as there was plenty of people who made decisions, like any of the producers who could have stepped in, hasbro themselves never had a problem with the movies till they stopped being profitable.

That's not even remotely true, mate. I like it because it's 'G1', but nobody else has to. Any one telling you that is wrong, and the fact the fandom at large has created such an atmosphere is bad.
The first 5 movies really aren't for me, which is a shame, because as a Transformers nut I want a live action version! Why would I not? But Bayverse, with the exception of a few bits of movie 1, isn't it for me. THIS, Bumblebee, at the moment looks like it will be for me, so, yay!.
I don't like Bayverse designs. I shouldn't have to, and I won't. Same goes for you, just in reverse. ;)^

i was cautiously optimistic about this based on the creative team behind it . even though bee is NOT my favorite character. but that trailer has got me genuinely enthused now.

i cant believe its took 10yrs and a "flop" of the main franchise to get a movie with designs that look even close to what the characters "should" look like (i.e G1) but here we are and damned if they haven't given us a nice blend.

that starscream cameo was just pure joy to me, to FINALLY see a screamer head design that looks like how the con was always traditionally portrayed had me squeeeing. i could only be happier if they use a chris latta-esque voice :D

if its him of course !

i didnt think he was slated to be in this so maybe its a ramjet homage. eitherway its a positive move IMO.

the smaller budget bodes well to me too. ya look at stuff like deadpool and logan and you see what you can get away with when the budget requirements are so low.

now im not saying were getting an R rated Bee movie, im simply saying they can take chances on the story when they dont need to make all that much money to break even.

and that increases the chance we'll get a TF film weve been waiting for.

So, he's gone from a bad-ass, Nazi-fighting warrior to a whipped dog cowering in some girl's garage. At least this franchise's unstoppable retconning has given us a VW BB and a Starscream that actually looks like Starscream, instead of some bowlegged, robotic Ugnaught (Star Wars reference. Google it.)

I might set aside my revulsion for the Bayverse toys and pick up those two, but I don't see myself dropping any coin on the movie itself. They've swirled too far down the toilet to bother with anymore.

well in fairness we dont know what happend to him before he ended up with that young wan.

as others have pointed out he's MUCH smaller so maybe he got beat up really bad- losing a pair of legs again or something - did a frenzy on formatting on a VW and legged it . he could be suffering from brain damage for all we know, hence the fear etc. theres a VERY strong "iron giant" vibe to the whole scene.

on an aside have to laugh now that i keep thinking that this is basically gonna work out as a movie version of that issue of the G1 comic where skids hooked up with a girl that got off washing him. :D :D :D :D

albeit with a seeker on his tail instead of ravage.

speaking of which ive been watching that bit with "starscream" on a loop and it DEFFO looks like he's transforming mid flight to attack someone with his arm cannons as ya can JUST see them start to form out of his forearm before it cuts away.

man i cant wait to see that alone.

Despite the sense of caution I should feel following TLK and how the trailers went to a very flat movie, I am very excited watching this trailer.

The music grabs you, it does. It starts a great mood for the trailer. Bee's transformation is cool, as is Starscreams. I really like the designs, more so than most movie designs. It is a nice blend of what it was in the 80's and what it can be on screen.

Iron Giant is a personal favorite, so I totally love the feel this movie has, relating to Iron Giant.

I did really like the voice over at the beginning too.

You know what would be cool? At the end of the movie, Bee leaves the girl for her safety and to pursue the allspark/his mission. And then we get a mid or end credits scene set after TLK where he meets her again as an older woman and the 2 rejoin at last.
