Burns Bloody Beaut Bots

Now that I have access to a fancy arse camera, I figured it's time to start sharing the collection.

I'll start off with some quick hasty shots of "the room". It's hard getting decent photos in there as it's a small room, lighting is crap, and there's a lot ...

It's an on-going project, hence why the floor looks like a bomb has gone off.

Lets move onto the "grail", the "crown jewel" of the collection shall we?

A MIB (though it's missing the instruction sheet) G1 Optimus Prime.

To quote The Curator "I acquired it in remarkable circumstances" (10 points to people who get that reference!). Going back many years I was bumming around on E-Bay and did a search for Optimus Prime. And this guy popped up.

He was listed under the wrong category, wasn't even under the Toys category. One bid and a nervous wait later, he was on his way to me for the grand total (including shipping) of ... $25.

I should point out, in the auction, he wasn't actually complete, he was missing a few pieces, all of which I already had. So when he arrived I added them, and the result is as follows!

You can see the rest at my Facebook page (I have non-TF stuff too. You should like and follow me, I'm a "Like" whore, though not as bad as Va'al) or if you're off the belief that teh Faceooks are evil or some other reason (which you're entitled to), I also have the album up on Imgur

Guess you guys just never paid attention to all those hints I've dropped over the years as to how big the collection is. :-P

Seriously, the room is full.

Fort Max has lived downstairs since I got him. I have no idea where to fit him upstairs unless I get rid of a couple of Unicrons.

I never doubted you, but I also remember perusing your old collection thread all those many years ago.

Those pictures sucked though. Plus there's been lots of changes.

So this is how I spent my Saturday night (aside from catching a Suicune and playing TF: Earth Wars)

Taking apart Firecons to give them a good clean. It's scary how much "ash" (for lack of a better word) these guys and the Sparkabots accumulate over the years.

Firecons are awesome. Makes me wish we'd get a Legends scale remake of the trio.

I did. And you know what happened? Murphys Law happened.

I got to the very last part to put back on. The left wing. One screw, that's all that was needed. The shaft it screwed into cracked. I took one look at it, cleaned it up, then super glued the little bugger into place. It has no bearing on the transformation whatsoever and I wasn't going to waste my time trying to fix it, or even replacing the arm off a spare.

They really should get a modern update. They don't need their sparking feature, just three little angry monsterbots with great articulation.

Agreed, though it would be cool if instead of breathing sparks, they came with/an enterprising 3P made 5mm posted guns with a sparking mechanism (think MechTech weapons but a million times cooler). That way the figure itself would be uncompromised but the gimmick would still be present, and if you didn't like the gimmick then hey, you just had a big cool looking gun. But really, as you say, we just need the trio updated. They'd all transform identically so it'd be economical to make all three, and who knows, you could redeco them into the G2 versions for extra mold mileage.

Which brings up another point.

People (myself included) have been quick to praise Hasbro for their part sharing that we all say began with Combiner Wars. But it didn't begin with Combiner Wars, the Firecons are some of the earliest examples of part sharing as their main bodies are exactly the same.

The only differences are the heads, arms (both sets), legs, wings and tails. But in the middle of it all is a block of plastic that is exactly the same for all three.

And I feel like changing their names from "Firecons" to "Fatty Fatty Boom Booms" :-P

Holy bejaibus Burn. That is a seriously impressive botstache.

Other than the obvious groupings, do you have any other rationale for what goes where and how it's displayed? Say, the CW shelf also had Cosmos and Windblade - the reason behind that, if at all?

Neo-G1. Mkall is 100% to blame for that. He was one of the first people to start a "Neo-G1" collection and at first I had no interest in doing it, until suddenly I realised one day I had a Neo-G1 collection. Combiner Wars was probably the tipping point.

Oh! And how you do define/categorise it, then?

Also, do you rotate figures on display, do you have any in storage, do you change positioning/pose regularly?

If they're modern updates of G1 characters, or they've been shoe-horned into the G1 continuity (e.g. Windblade, the CW ring-ins) they're "Neo-G1".

Nothing is in storage. That being said, there's a bunch laying on the floor because there's no where for them, plus a bunch downstairs in the lounge because they haven't made it upstairs, and also a bunch on the bed in the spare room that I intend to get rid of some day (mostly movie figures)

No, I don't think I could ever leave completely. I'm just at a low point with regular figures. High end collector items still keep my interest. Had a surprise arrival in the mail (a months old and forgotten about pre order) the other day, and it helped ignite the passion a bit. Still don't have a storage room though....

Seeing a room like yours though, that brings back very found memories of the old days when I was trying to be a completionist and had thousands of figures.

While I don't miss the clutter, I do at times miss the collection.

Acquiring things has been pretty quiet for me lately due to a mountain of bills, which is always wonderful at this time of year. But I did get a few things this month.

Image
These guys ... DAMN! I had TR Triggerhappy but I accepted a long time ago that I never end up seeing the last few waves of a series, so I switched over to Legends, and had to get that version of Triggerhappy as well. Slugslinger is sitting comfortably in my private warehouse at HLJ and I really can't wait to put him with these two. They're both fantastic figures, easily some of the best from the line.

And then there's this.
Image
TR version was ... meh. Legends? Talk about a floppy mess. He's just not a good figure in general.

This guy though ...
Image
He's okay. I still prefer CHUG Kup though, while Legends may be more accurate to his G1 self, CHUG Kup just looks better.

Another one of the better figures from the line.
Image
He's just all round fun, regardless of which version you get.

And now for the big disappointments. The Last Knight ...
Hound - I like the character, John Goodman did a fantastic job of voicing him. But this ...
Image
...is just crap. Especially compared to his Age of Extinction version. I mean look at those feet! They're two wheels split in half. And he lacks weaponry. ugh ...

And this
Image
Is just a repaint. Laziness in a main line. Not impressed.

So that's December. January ... oh January shall be fun!

For these guys (people call them the '87 Seekers apparently?) I don't think you can go wrong either way, Hasbro or Takara. But if you want the "full experience" then go Takara for the Targetmasters. They are absolutely worth the additional price IMO.

I'm actually a huge fan of TR Rod, but it's nice to see someone else's Legends Rod is floppy. Mine is too. Can't even hold up his damn Targetmaster dude. Also the hollowness of his chest in bot mode isn't appealing. I don't hate him by any means, but he was a let down for sure.

Burn wrote:This guy though ...

He's kinda goo/bad to me. Both versions are great due to the transformation. Takara's has a clearly better bot mode, but I actually prefer the Hasbro one for truck mode. The remolding they did for the Takara Kup leaves him gappy in truck mode, and it sucks to see that amazing truck mode suffer for a little more screen accuracy.

Burn wrote:Another one of the better figures from the line.

Agreed! Either one is great. I prefer Tak's though personally.

With all your G1'yness I didn't know you were interested in the Bayformers. With Knight Prime, I have some advice if you're seeking one of the other versions. The Takara TLK with the shield backpack, I didn't find all that great. Sure it was nice to get that thing off his back but the shield is so big and so clumsy, that it's just a fail to me. My recommendation would be for the Takara AD-31 Armor Knight. It's the remold repaint of the one you have with backpack still intact.

Or you could just get the TLK Takara remold and leave the backpack on
