It's all relative, and it's all personal.

I collect because quite frankly, nothing has ever had the impact that Transformers had on me...and for me, that's saying a lot. It's probably saying a lot for many of us that came up in the 80s. I have had extensive...extensive collections of Star Wars, G.I.Joe, M.A.S.K., Masters of the Universe, Inhumanoids, Air Raiders, Sky Commanders, Super Powers Collection, Secret Wars...I could go on. If it was out in the 80s I somehow got a hold of it...and lots of it. But when Transformers hit the scene, nothing was quite as desired as those loveable robots from Cybertron. In short, Hasbro's marketing was genius.

My current collecting is an evolutionary process. For me, I've had over the course of many years most of the G1 figures (many, two or three times over), I got into Beast Wars, had a significant number of those US and the Takara properties, Transformers 2000/RiD and something from pretty much every line outside of Energon (it was too kid-centric for me...so was RiD, but the toys...are glorious). Once the Classics line arrived, I jumped into that pretty seriously...I wasn't trying to be a completist, but I loved the updated Neo-G1 figures. G1 for...TODAY!! It has great appeal, like with IDW comics that has finally tapped into that full-bore with the cross marketing. Eventually, Takara released MP-10, and I resisted for a time, but once the line got some figures under it's belt (essentially, once MP-17 was announced) I decided I was going to collect Masterpiece.

Things have changed since my 20s and 30s. I had no kids, no wife and plenty of disposable income until my mid-30s. Now, I have less (for now) disposable income and 4 kids. To collect Masterpiece means to have to focus specifically on a certain thing. I simply cannot just go willy-nilly over the collecting world of Transformers. I have to get the most bang for the buck. Being 40 (41 next week) means I've transitioned to the point of true nostalgia...and true nostalgia means (for me) 1984-1988. But again, I've had all that stuff. So now, I've decided to get the "idealized" versions of those great, classic characters...how we wanted them to be when we were kids. I still like the Classics figures...I still have a couple left that I simply can't part with. But I have to focus. Setting aside the fact that I have a couple of figures I have to go back and get that are some of the most expensive figures available currently, I figure collecting Masterpiece will be "cheaper" over the long run than buying figure after figure from Classics/Generations even though I'm paying more per figure.

Anyway, it's pretty much nostalgia at this point.

I have a young son (2 next week), and I have collected all of the Transformers: Prime Cyberverse figures and will add the Robots in Disguise Legion Class figures to that for him...when he's old enough, which is probably about 4 years from now. :BOT:

My foray into the Transformers franchise was interesting to say the least, After all how many people can say their first Transformer could go to infinity and beyond?

Why do I collect TF's? The short answer is, I like cool-looking mechs--which is basically the best and only reason you'll ever need, IMO.

I appreciate the aesthetic evolution of the characters; where the same character can have over a dozen different designs in different continuities.

Fiction doesn't really play a part in my collecting, if at all. I just go by aesthetics, and if a TF looks good, it's bought. I'm the same way with non-TF mechs. I'd end up buying model kits of mechs from games, movies and anime that I've never even played or watched.

So all in all, it's all about the coolness factor for me.

Born in 1991 and G1 still snagged me lol

First Memories:
I remember being 3 or 4 and my older cousin having a g1 Prime that I never got to play with and from then on I had this passion/obsession with Optimus Prime.(still don't have a g1 convoy yet :-( ) I also had access to the f.h.e vhs tapes, so I literally would watch rewind watch rewind!

One "magic" day in kindergarten we watched half of TF:TM and the teacher turned the movie off right after Prime died....the damage had already been done though...I finally got to finish the movie when I bought it for myself 6 years later.

Transformers where mainly my toys of choice for my youth paired with the random gundams, megazords, and DBZ figs. So I figure I always had a thing for robot toys.

Collecting:
I stopped buying toys all together when I was around 13 just because of that weird adolescent gap when you're told to grow up focus on adult things and conform to cultural norms/societal standards. I did hang on to my rhino entertainment TF box sets and my mp-01!

TF reviewers got me back into collecting when I was about to turn 20 mainly Bikertrashwolf(josh), Robotadventures(ruven), Thew, ilovemess(ray), exaggeratedelegy(george), and busterbrenton! Had it not been for those key induviduals and many many more I probably would only be buying music equipment right now. Thanks so much TF community I really appreciate you all for how much love you have for TF's and making me feel like a kid again!

Collection theme:
Classics classics classics classics classics classics!!!
I buy the best versions of the character to me. That means it's gotta have great articulation and a beautiful g1/idw/studio ox style robot mode. So 3rd Party bots get a lot of my money.
I have MP Soundwave and 3 seekers but I've put to much focus into classics to deviate and get all the MP's right now.

Goal:
I'm trying to make the TF universe of characters totally represented in a classics collection. I have a long ways to go lol! Not everyone can be MKALL. ;)

By that I mean I believe I'll cease collecting as soon as I have a nearly completed G1 cast done up in the Generations styling. To that end I went through all of the old G1 Catalogs to see what I'm missing and what I considered "necessary" vs. "nice to have."

It came down to me needing roughly 50 figures - mainly combiners and -masters. Everything from the Pretender, Micromaster, and Actionmaster lands in the "nice to have" category. It's kind of crazy that I'm at this stage in my head.

Sorry I'm a little late to the party here. But I know exactly what you mean.

My goal, from the start, was to get the Classics versions of all the US G1 cast and any G1 characters I could. Then I bought a bunch of movie stuff, Animated stuff, and got into Masterpiece.

I have almost achieved the Classics goal. I rarely buy G1 stuff because prices are too high for the stuff I still want. When they scaled down the MP line I gave up on it because size does not justify the size.

Honestly I'm pretty happy about it. I only have a few figures I still need. I don't find the need to get into any other lines or start a new collection. It will be nice to step back and appreciate what I have without thinking "geez, I still have to find this" (I'm talking about you Arcee, who hasn't shown up at retail in central PA yet).
Check out my collection!

Why do I collect?

For some unknown and crazy obsession that renewed just after the first Transformers Movie formed. I had a few back from the early days locked away. (My family was rather poor as a child.) When I finally started making my own way and having money I think the realization that I could now have what I dreamt of having before has spurred on the "need" to collect.

While I do have certain levels of rules that I follow. It is rather lose in that regard. Currently I have over 200 and majority are boxed.
Movie 1, ROTF, DOTM, AOE, WOFC, FOC, Generations, (More recent MPS from the last two years), Platinums, and Chinese Years. Also certain 3rd Party figures. (Edit - Also some G1's, Prime, and whatever I feel is a must have...)

I am evolving more into the Customization of Transformers, even getting into re-painting them and even doing my own 3D Modeling and Printing.

My collecting has evolved in similar manner, that its now on the hunt for the best figure to represent itself. Not necessarily owning every last figure, but to simply have a decent (artistic) figure. My displays I am working on right now will attempt to be within scale with each size. So most Leaders won't be displayed with a Deluxe or even some Voyagers. So this presents the challenge... What will work in each display.

I suppose the inner child I had as a kid was suppressed because of not being able to afford things. As an adult it is finally freed and is trying to live it out as much as it can. Having three kids I hope that I am able to give them what I did not. (But with balance!)

I do believe certain figures are simply art... Human Alliance Jazz, MP Soundwave, even MP Grimlock... MP Seakers... MP-10 Optimus Prime... Any version of Soundwave... Oh and Bruticus... He simply is a must own and I have what I believe to be the best... ROTF Bruticus, with 3rd Party add-ons. I plan to take pictures of him this weekend...

Good thread.

Why do I collect? To take back my childhood, really. See, one day shortly after I turned 13, my step-dad barged into my room and said it is time to grow up. He then made me help him gather up all of my "play" toys into several large trash bags. It was almost every single M.a.s.k. vehicle, includin Boulder Hill play set, a lot of G.I. Joes, and so many transformers. We then went out to the burn pile, and I watched them get destroyed. For some reason he let me keep my Legos. I never really forgot how mad that made me, but I accepted my reality and moved on.

Three years later, after getting heavy into the Star Wars novels that were just starting to take off, I'm working my first job at Meijer. While digging through the Star Wars figures, I noticed all the Beast Wars stuff. I was quite intrigued. They were transformers, and yet they weren't. Transmetals had just come out and I picked up several of them. when the Rid stuff came out, I picked up almost the entire line, and I loved it. A year or so after that. I bought my first computer, and opened my eBay account. In the 12 years since. I've re-acquired every toy I was forced to burn and then some.

I collected at first to get back what was lost, I collect now because I enjoy it, and how far more advanced the toys usually are compared to back in the day. Some things I collect simply to give to my own boys when they are old enough to play with it.

Pretty good. We will never be close, but I recognize that in his head, he was doing a good thing, helping me grow up. Dude had an extremely abusive child hood, and went through so me serious **** in 'Nam. Yet, he as strict as he was, he never laid a hand on me. He could of treated me better, it he could have treated me a lot, lot worse. Plus, these days he is fighting the nasty "C", and that makes it easier to put aside animosity.

Took me several years to get to that point. I moved out a week after I graduated high school, and didn't go back home for a visit for 3 years.

It's great that you can at least put things into perspective like that, and can understand where he was coming from. Also sorry to hear about his illness.

I went through something very similar. My (step)dad was lets just say, not a nice guy. He has had like, 5(?) heart attacks and open heart surgeries. When he had the last one (damn, almost ten years ago now) we thought it was "the one" and I sorta just, forgave him for his lifetime of misdeeds. It ended up being more of a weight off of my shoulders than anything else. Although he wasn't actually deserving of such forgiveness (which I say with a much clearer head than I had in my younger days), and it isn't just my anger and resentment talking here.

At least you and your old man are on good terms.

I don't know if I'd go so far to say good, but we've achieved cordial.

Back to collecting, now that I'm caught up on the comics storyline, I'm find g it has heavily influenced what I'm collecting. I've been making a concerted effort to aquire the generations figures that never showed up at retail. Take Generations Swerve, for instance. As a legends class figure, he is very small, very simple. Not what I usually go for spending money on. Since I love his character in MTMTE so much, I've gone so far as to add him to my Masterpiece shelf.

This whole story makes me appreciate my dad even more. As a current high schooler, I have a bare bones budget, hence why i only collect generations stuff. I actually am kind of mad at younger me since I got rid of all my tfs (cybertron I believe) in like 6th grade. Anyways, while my dad and I are really distant and he doesn't necessarily "approve" of collecting, he never has forcefully gotten rid of anything of mine, so I guess you could say I'm appreciative of his respect.

My collection started in the mid-80s with my parents giving me Gobots and other non-Transformers, but telling me they were Transformers. I didn't care, they were still cool, and fun, and were played with all the time. They actually probably are still in a box at my parents’ house along with all my well-played with Hot-Wheels and Matchbox type cars (I should raid that box, for nostalgia-or eBay). I started buying the toys myself towards the end of when Beast Wars/Machines and Armada toys were still on the shelves. I never really bought a lot of the Armada/Energon/Cybertron lines due to the pricing vs income at the time they were in stores. Later when income wasn’t as much of an issue and I started trying to collect again my girlfriend at the time (now ex) wasn’t approving of any Transformer buy, even if I got a great deal on eBay. But it was ok for her to get whatever cutesy stationary things she wanted from Japan-even though she never used most of it. I think my collection has grown best in the last few years with my fiancé. She likes Transformers too and actually ENCOURAGES me to buy things if we see them in a store, even if I’m only kind-of interested in it. She actually got me my first Bumblee figure-her favorite character. She loves watching me open up a new figure to check it out or listening to me talk about whatever new things are coming out. I’ve watched many of the cartoons when they were on TV, but I never read any of the comics until this month (I’m starting with the 80s Marvel series and working my way forward). My collecting style is what figures I think look good, regardless of character or line. If I like the robot and alt mode it’s a definite buy. Otherwise I have to REALLY like either the robot or alt mode if I don’t like the other mode. For example RiD (2015) Grimlock, don’t like dino mode, really like robot mode. I’m not a fan of when a mold is re-used and all they do is just change the colors to make another character (that’s just lazy-I’m looking at you Beast Hunters Grimwing/Darksteel) and I’ll only get the one I like best. But I like it when a mold is re-done with different parts (like Armada Starscream -> Thundercracker -> Skywarp -> Universe Ramjet).

Let me preface this by saying that I rarely answer this question for real. I'm only doing so because I think Va'al is genuinely interested in the responses.

First and foremost: Because I want to and because I enjoy it.

Transformers are engaging toys that I find to be a lot of fun. I love exploring good engineering and seeing how it progresses over the years and through the various design constraints of the lines.

To a larger degree, I collect because it sparks my imagination. I like the mythos. I like the characters and the archetypes that have evolved in the franchise. I LOVE seeing a cast of characters come to life in plastic form on my shelves. Some folks collect individual characters or "lines" of toys. My interest is in seeing the various groups and cliques of the franchise (and sometimes that does mean a whole line).

I enjoy trying to get those groups on my shelves in the best, most interesting ways possible. I like taking the time for little details that turn mundane into spectacular. I love it when people look at my display and then do a double take when they see the small aspect or pairing or weapon allotment that makes it all pop. I get called an elitist because I almost always demand Takara levels of detail on things, but that's what makes my collection different.

But one of the most fun things for me is how all of it, the stories, the toys, and especially the quirks of figures and characters gets my imagination going. I love trying to figure out in my mind why having Targetmasters remotely makes sense. I love trying to rationalize how Transformers can still convert when they've taken joint damage. I love explaining to people that Minicons don't reveal a gun inside a Transformer that they were somehow oblivious to before, but rather that the Minicon forces a reconfiguration on the first pairing and then powers the evolutionary change afterwards.

It's fun.

Maybe I don't have time to sit around like a five year old and crash Optimus into Megatron, but I can certainly entertain all kinds of wild notions, theories, etc in my normal work days.

Also, I collect because I'm ballin' outrageous.

I collect because quite frankly, nothing has ever had the impact that Transformers had on me. But when Transformers hit the scene, nothing was quite as desired as those loveable robots from Cybertron. In short, Hasbro's marketing was genius.

It is, and that is why I'm fascinated by all the responses. I'd actually be curious to see if any other toy/media brand has had the same constant hold with its fanbase (I mean, MLP is currently really big, but definitely waned at some point; Star Wars is a media franchise which happened to then move into toys, etc.). :-?

SKYWARPED_128 wrote:Why do I collect TF's? The short answer is, I like cool-looking mechs--which is basically the best and only reason you'll ever need, IMO.

I appreciate the aesthetic evolution of the characters; where the same character can have over a dozen different designs in different continuities.

So why Transformers over, say, Gundam or Evangelion, or any of the other mecha franchises from the earlier periods like Jeeg or Mazinger? Is it the character incarnations?

[There are more responses I want to come to (Ironhidensh, Kyleor, Counterpunch), but they are fairly dense and chunky, and would rather not have them all mix up here!]

Everything at one point or another has had highs and lows of fan appeal (even Star Wars). The 90's were more or less a desert for Transformers fans. Machine Wars doesn't count. The 90's (to me) was the most culturally bankrupt decade because mostly everything in our type of universe was mostly rehashes of stuff from the 80's. Time hadn't even really passed.

You had Power Rangers, but that was re-tread Japanese programming (which we already had with Robotech and Voltron). However, there seem to be some people who are big into Power Ranger collecting nowadays, so there is that.

Star Wars wasn't so much a media franchise that happened to move into toys so much as it was literally the start of everything we are doing/playing with/watching/obsessing over today. It is easily fair to say without Star Wars there would be no GIJARAH or Transformers as we know them. George Lucas sold his ownership of the first Star Wars movie in exchange for the licensing rights to the film. 20th Century Fox (hilariously) thought they were getting over, but Lucas did everything right. With the proceeds from the Kenner toys and all the other licensed material he was able to form Lucasfilm proper and ILM, in addition to self finance THe Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

With Star Wars, Kenner started the 3 3/4 inch action figure craze, which is what led Hasbro to 1) bring back GI Joe as an adventure team and 2) go to Marvel Comics for bios and comic books. This in turn being phenominally successful, allowed them to acquire all the Diaclone/Microman stuff and go back to Marvel for more with the Transformers for characters and comics. Gi Joe and Transformers were the first two comic books ever advertised on TV (in that order). All of this to sell toys.

In turn, Marvel benefitted because they were "gateway comics" which brought in many new readers (myself included) who also bought the existing Marvel staple of characters. On the flip, Hasbro's marketing has been the target of parental groups and such since the 80s. But hey, success attracts good and bad.

As an aside, I just remembered something. Kenner's figures in the 3 3/4 amd the slightly larger 4 inch *Super Powers* collection were always in scale with each other. Meaning, Darth Vader and Chewbacca (and others) were taller than Han and Luke, who were taller than Leia etc. Superman was slightly taller than Batman, and Robin was about the same height as Wonder Woman who had heels. I'm mentioning this because the big pull in for me on the Masterpiece stuff was the being in some semblance of actual scale in remasterpiece line. I've always had an affinity for it, because very early on, it was done with toys I had a very small boy and I actually noticed and appreciated it back then.

I slugged away at this rather specific (and restrictive) rule, passing up on Rodimus, Ultra Magnus et al. This all changed when IDW started to re release the UK comic book, once again I was transported to my childhood and began to gain a greater affection for Rodimus, Magnus and especially Galvatron, as a result I began to expand my collection chasing up previous figures I had passed on (which proved quite expensive in some cases) and also delve into the 3rd party side of collecting to fill those much needed gaps in my collection.

I think its time for me to update my responce, since I responded to this post my collecting has taken a very distinct twist. After much deliberation and a fair bit of positive peer pressure fron other posters I have sacrificed my Classics collection to make way for a Masterpice only collection. I am approaching it in much the way I approached my Classics collection in that I'm focusing on the pre-movie figures first. My initial anxiety about selling off my Classics collection susided once my first MP figures came through the door, as soon as I opened up MP Bee I was hooked! I love the way MP's give you the toys you had as a kid but with an increadible amount of articulation and accuracy to both screen and toy versions.

That was a fairly swift twist, all things considered! How are you finding the separation from the otherwise central part of your collection so far?

It's something I'm about to do myself, though for other reasons.

Kyleor wrote: I think my collection has grown best in the last few years with my fiancé. She actually got me my first Bumblebee figure-her favorite character. She loves watching me open up a new figure to check it out or listening to me talk about whatever new things are coming out.

That is always a great way of relationships and collections to turn out, and I'm glad it's working for you. :D

There is another thread on the boards about that type of dynamic specifically, which you might want to take a look at too: your-better-half-and-your-collection-t102274.php

I think there's a general misconception in some areas of the fandom/outside of it, somewhat claiming that 'other people' may not approve or support of the hobby - the collecting especially, as it can be a financial, spacial and time-consuming aspect of a fan's life. That can be true, of course, but only as much as any other hobby or fandom or passion! So yes, it's always good to hear positive stories about this side of collecting. :D

Actually it wasnt really that quick of a transition, I had been thinking of doing it for a while, a few things were stopping me though:

a)the thrilling 30 line provided some really choice interpretations of great characters, Springer, Blitwing, Jetfire etc b) 3rd pary figures were really upping their game, Mania King and Bii for example and c) which was really the main reason was the lack of a decent Megatron from the MP line.

The first reason turned out to be a little dissapointing Blitzwing and Springer had some pretty sketchy QC, Jetfire was a great figure but there were obvious corners cut in the design, then the 3rd Party figures were great but the prices on some of them I felt were a bit OTT and last but not least X-Transbots revealed Apollyon.

So I took the plunge I sold off a some customs and some Takara and 3rd Party stuff, bought MP Prowl and Bumblebee and pre-ordered Apollyon all in the space of about a week, since then I've added afew more key figures and also preordered the MP Prime reissue and I have to say I havn't looked back since Bee landed on my doorstep, these are hands down the most satisfying figures I have ever owned and my fondness for my Classics collection feels like a distant memory. Dont get me wrong I'm not down on Classics figures I still keep up tp date with the line, Combiner Wars is coming along nicley (Magnus looks great!) but I look at the promo and in hand shots and then take a look at my MP figures and I know I made the right choice.

Good to see your also looking to make the plunge, you will not be dissapointed :D

I misphrased my response, I'm afraid: what I actually meant was that I'm about to go through all the figures and do a general cull of stuff, including some of the ones that I never thought I'd get rid of, to make space for the MP figures I already own.

Moving to a new place in the UK come May (argh), and taking as much stuff back to Italy before then to avoid lugging stuff around in boxes. If it has to stay hidden, I'd rather know it was safe somewhere I have relative access to, and with a nice display (into nothing :P ).

Ahh I see, It's funny that you talk about the figures you thought you would never get rid of, I've sold plenty recently many of which were concidered the mainstay of my collection.

I already posted in that thread also. It definitely is spacial-consuming (looking at you Energon and Platinum Omega Supreme, DotM (Butterfly) Ultimate Optimus Prime, and Metroplex), I didn't know how many figures I had until I had to put most of them in boxes in preparation of upgrading from the shelving unit they were on to the one I just got....and have to put together/configure :/ But then I get to re-arrange them all for better display, and pull aside the few I don't want anymore.

Having moved back to Italy for a week or so as I work at a deadline (argh argh argh), I've been reshelving some of the collection. I carried most of the toys from the UK flat, so I can move more easily and not worry about shelf space, but also to trim down what I really want to keep.

It turns out that some of the figures I thought I'd never let go are all being devolved to my younger brother, or charity, or sales. For example, HFTD Leader Starscream and HA Jazz. The only movieverse figures I'm keeping are Guzzle and Hatchet, EMOP Prime and Megatron - and Sideways, the toy that got me back into collecting.

I'm noticing that the ones that make the final cut are not because of their continuity or cast links, but rather because I really like the toy from the engineering, aesthetic and affective value. Example? Prime Voyager Megatron. I have the whole Decepticon cast, but I care very little for that figure. Beastformers from Prime and BH? All kept, on their own shelf, with TFA Dinobots and the one AoE Dinobot I'm keeping, Scorn.

(You can see what I mean in my collection thread, as I keep updating when good light shines in the room.)

So yes, my next question I suppose is - do you ever radically change your collecting habits, due to personal epiphanies or external contributing factors? Or do you wait until the moment passes, then re-evaluate?

Absolutely.

I (kinda) recently made a big hobby switch from comics to TF's. And even within that switch, I had psuedo plans of collecting pretty much everything TF related, but settled for MP, BW/BM, C/G, and G1. For now, I have no plans of collecting movie-verse, AEC, Prime, or Animated. Which is strange for me as I'm an all or nothing kinda guy.

To answer, I'd say wait and re-evaluate. I've found that decisions made in haste are rarely good. Also, I think you might regret getting rid of HA Jazz.
