Seriously ... you like what you like, and don't give a toss if someone else doesn't.

I understand what you're getting at, but considering the opinions of other people is hardly letting someone else think for you. Aside from that, I've discovered far more things thanks to the mention of critics than I've ever been shied away from things because of them. I don't really think that anyone really, really internalizes what critics say and then bases their decision completely on that opinion.
Critics actually do know waht they're talking about, even though it makes us so much edgier when we decry their opinions because they conflict with our own. Unless it's TF movies, of course. The only reason people wouldn't like those is because of what critics say.

Just sayin' Burn.

Anyway, James Camerons' megamovies. Titanic and Avatar? They're ok, but not as earth changing as critics try to say. Avatar at least was interesting, once. And Thomas Pyncheon. Terrible writer, terrible.

See, I get what you're saying. But I like what Va'al said, a review should look at both sides. It seems these days a lot of critics just give their personal opinion, which is all well and good, and they're entitled to it, but call me crazy, if they're going to review something they should do the review from an unbiased perspective.

And that's probably why I don't give a toss about critics any more, a lot of them show their bias now.

There where only like 10 TFs in the whole movie. The Autobots don't come until halfway through the movie, then disappear until the last 10 minutes. There where too many humans. The plot was: Giant alien transforming robots come to earth to buy some glasses off eBay. The last fight scene was only 10 minutes long and the majority of it was Sam running to a building. The movie had little to nothing to do with TF's at all. Megatron was only in it for the last 10 minutes as well. That's all I can think of for right now. I guess you'll have to hunt me down now. Meet me where you want me, but when you do, you'd better be strapped! :michaelbay:

I absolutely hated Crash and it won best picture for some reason. I don't know what the movie was going for, something about racism I think. But it did it by making most of the characters annoying shallow stereotypes. The entire thing was nothing but people running their damn mouths.

I wouldn't say I totally disagree with critics, but I don't pay attention most of the time. My two favourite movies are Event Horizon and Judgment Night, and both were panned harshly.

On the other hand, I loved the Toy Story movies, which were universally awesomed by critics.

But don't beat critics for liking only "artsy" films. They're not all art house goons. Ebert gave praise to Evil Dead 2, Mortal Kombat, Beavis and Butt-head Do America, and Spider-Man 2 among others.

The movie "Precious". This movie was praised by critics everywhere. I started watching and stopped after about 20 minutes into it. This movie was complete and utter crap. This movie probably used the word "nigger" in it more imes in the first 20 minutes than I've heard my whole life. Abuse, rape... I don't see how people find these movies good, let alone entertaining.

True, but at the end of the day, a review that contains to definative yea or nay is useless as a review. Car companies spend how much money annually on new car modals, and not every one of them is like, car of the year or the Motortrend Top Pick. Not everyone gets a gold medal. And trying to be just in the middle about everything leads nowhere: a movie review that cuts straight down the center so as not to upset anyone would essentially states "A movie was made about __. It is in theaters now." And THAT would probably upset people for saying it's in theaters now, when the critic saw it at an advance screening.
Absolutely, a review should be more fair than lop-sided. Even if a critic puts out a level, even review and then gives the movie some kind of rating, like Three Stars, that's a biased rating, because it shows where the critic would place it in relation to other moveis they've reviewed. If we're talking about critics who lambast films and their fans, that's kind of a different story. There's no real excuse for that.

An example of a bad review: [Insert Movie Name here] is a horrible, shoddily made piece of crap and anyone who likes it has less brainpower than a dust mite.

Oh yes, if we substitute Revenge of the Fallen for x, the equation equals Roger Ebert.

Yes. As a professional critic, he should have known not to attack the fans of a movie simply for liking the movie. That review sounded more like a teen blogger reviewing a movie than a well-respected critic. I also don't like how he said video games aren't an art form...
