Custom De-iced Megatron and Final Battle Ironhide!

Postby Jin Saotome » Sun Aug 26, 2007 9:07 pm

Finally I came across the new Voyager series with the icy Megatron. That ice had to go however! New moving parts, new sculpted wings instead of the ice ones, Megatron is ready to take to the skies. He also comes with a Robot Heroes ripped-n-half Jazz, heheh. Check out his X'd out eyes and tongue hanging out. I'm just sick that way.

Now for the best Ironhide I've done yet! It's at the end of the movie where he's all scuffed up. However this Ironhide has the replacment hip, scarred eye, and longer smokestacks for Topkick mode. Resculpted face and ball-joint neck too.

Enjoy!

Those are both truly awesome.

As for final battle robot heroes Jazz...at least he died with a smile on his face.

I think that Ironhide is the 33rd flavour of Awesomesauce!!!

And if ol' Megatron looked like that (even with Hasbro's crappy paint apps) then I would own one by now.

I just want to say that I absolutely love the Megatron and I greatly admire your work Jin. But I hope you don't mind me asking if you would describe how you sculpted the hands and wings in more detail (I read the webpage but I'm still curious as to how it all fits together) as well as how you were able to detach his wings from the back. I'm working on a custom Voyager Megs as well without the ice but I could never figure out how to make non-icy wings. I look forward to seeing what you come up with next because your work is fantastic 8) (even though I know you've heard it over a thousand times)

I just have two questions. Where are the wings in robot mode? and What happened to the head in vehicle mode?

I dont understand the significance of the hip, nor can i notice any difference in his face, but it looks alot better than the original.

I was thinking of modding the smokestacks on mine as well but wasnt sure if the end result would be worth it so i didnt bother. I think i may be inclined to change my mind now.

What did you do to stop the paint scuffing on the automorph parts?

The significance is in Ironhide's tech spec bio on the back of the box. It says he has had his hip replaced.

Here is his tech spec bio:
TECH SPEC BIO

AUTOBOT weapon specialist and and old-fashioned warrior IRONHIDE is the big stick that backs up the soft steps of OPTIMUS PRIME. Paint scarred and chrome chipped by shrapnel from a hundred battles, he is the oldest of the AUTOBOTS. His right hip is a mass of bypasses and temporary solutions, his power core and timing system are irregular, and his idle is set way too high; but his optics are the sharpest on CYBERTRON, and his cannon arm is as steady as ever. OPTIMUS PRIME relies n him for tactical advice and a cool head. As long as they keep making missiles compatible with his cannons, he'll keep fighting, until every last DECEPTICON is a smoldering wreck.

oh ok, i remember that part now.

I still dont see whats different about the face though...

And my question about paint on the automorph sections still stands.

Thanks for the compliment! For the wings I clipped down the ice shards and sanded the top/bottom slightly. Then I smeared on a layer od Apoxie Sculpt and went to town smoothing it into flat wings with a slightly rounded front. Ya know, like plane wings. After it cured I sanded it, scored some lines on the surface, then cut sections from styrene and glued them on for 3D panels.

The hands I just cut off from the Grevious wheel bike, drilled a hole in the bottoms and glued in the magnet, then added the extra finger in the middle with some fixit sculpt.

Tramp wrote:I just have two questions. Where are the wings in robot mode? and What happened to the head in vehicle mode?

You pop the wings off the back in Robot mode (you can do this with the normal figure) and pop the head off in plane-mode. I'm a big fan of alternate heads/hands and removable pieces with my figures. I hate it when articulation/sculpt is sacrificed just so something slides back or folds in. That's probabaly the #1 thing that pisses me off about Transformers. There's a lot of mass-shifting going on and there's no way to accurately depict that unless you get rid of the mass, as in removing pieces. Hiding kibble just doesn't cut it for me.

Any Radio Shack, even the one in the mall. Ask for more in the back as they never put them all out because the packages stick together, lol. $2.00 for 2 in a pack I believe. Perfect size for most hand/head/armor applications.

They mention his hip on the back of the package and either in the movie/comic/somewhere it mentions he has a scar across his left optics. You can see the scar travelling up on to the blue plate above his eye, on the eye, and there's no white pupil.

Nothing touches on the automorphing parts. They feet/leg sections just fold up. And the one post that does travel around on the side in the trench can be painted black or drybrushed silver. You can't even tell if that scratches at all. We're not dealing with Wal-Mart craft paint here either. Testors Acryl is one of the best paints out there for durability on plastic and I even use it inside balljoints. It will actually buff shiny from something moving across it rather than scratch or chip off, especially the black/white/silvers. You can't even remove the paint with alcohol after it cures, you need straight acetone. C'mon, you don't think I'd make stuff that scratches up did you? Tsk.

Trouble is Jin, i cant find anything by testors over here. So i have to use Tamiya which is the best i can find. I hate this lame country.

I noticed his scar on the face i could tell that was different but i meant what was different about the rest of his face cos you said you changed it but i cant tell.

And damn i need some of that apoxie stuff, but their stupid UK distributor never got back to me with a price list and shipping rates. Im broke anyway.

I liked icy-tron, but I always wanted wings with metal inside the ice.
Anyway, I love it all. Ironhide is really smoot, and You cant even telll the ice was there EVER on Megs.
