don't you think if anyone was going to be happy about the new animated series.. it would be g1 fans?
and if you continue to spell it like an asshole (ie: geewunners) prepare for no one to take you seriously or even give a ****

I'm as happy as a pig rolling in crap that they'll be a new TF series. I never grew up with G1, nor have I seen an episode (which I really want to badly), but clearly G1 came at the right time at the right place and the formula worked. And when something works well... then you can't deviate too far from the formula (BM for example, which I did like, but some didn't) What I'm trying to say that I think the bulk of sucess comes from G1, but the whole TF universe (past, present, and future)and of course the fans is really what keeps the staying power with TF's popularity. Of couse I read my statement again and it seems like I'm just mindlessely rambling.

Weapon: Switch Blade Tail
"The seeds of the future, lie buried in the past." -Optimus Primal. He's right.

G1 was the starting point for all of this, and what is to come.
Someone mentioned, earlier in the thread, that this all started from Microman, etc. While this is true for the toys, it isn't for the show. The show imbued the toys with life and actually gave them personalities we could connect and identify with.

So, with that in mind, I say we should embrace G1 and thank the people at the helm of it, for giving us a grand 20+ years. If it wasn't for their hard work, and creating new figures, etc....we wouldn't be here right now.

With that said....TransFormers has gone in so many directions and got to walking on it's own two legs as a name, that it doesn't require a G1 infusion to stay alive. Homage, or otherwise.

The new movie is proof of that. Oh sure, there were a few G1 homages in it, but that was more to appease the fans, not to actually tie it into G1. Bay himself said that he didn't care for what came before...so that right there, coming from the man who directed it himself, said basically that this is a reboot.

A ragtag handful of Autobots with slightly altered personalities...

Prime: More human. (He was nothing short of fantastic. He was more realistic. G1, every 10 seconds I thought he was going to put on a cape and they'd play a superhero theme.)

Ironhide: Definitely not the G1 Ironhide. (Gun toting crazy, even with the humans, but in all fairness....he's meant to be Prime's security, beyond his weapons expertise. Plus after all that he's seen, he would absolutely find the humans to be a threat and wish to protect himself. He of course learns that he's wrong in the end. G1 Ironhide was a fighter, but got in more trouble than necessary and was more of an irritating old man. Kinda brainless, just running into the heat of battle.)

Jazz: Modernized. (Fast, cool, knowledgeable, in that case, yes...he's like his G1 counterpart. However, this one's far more realistic than the original. And his use of words are quite different... "'Sup lil' bitches?" gonna see that in G1? I don't think so.)

Bumblebee: Everything cool about the original not only bettered, but every aspect of him is just...wow. (He looks good, he's fast, he's whipsmart, he's tough as nails and not afraid to die, he still retains an adorable nature as well. His G1 counterpart is a VW Bug. Camaro clearly wins here. His G1 counterpart is fast and smart, but not enough to save himself time and again, and while he thought he was "10 feet tall and bulletproof" he was anything but.)

Ratchet: Oh so much better...(Here, he's like a nice old country doctor with a big heart, and no nonsense attitude. When he told Prime about killing himself over the Allspark, he wasn't being a whiny bitch or irritating. He was giving his true opinion and it was good advice, meant with the best intentions. His G1 counterpart was always whining, and while he did his job, and it was exemplary...he was always being a bitch.)

The movie proved that you could get TransFormers to walk on it's own two feet, sans G1. And it's a massive box office hit, over half a billion dollars worldwide now. If it was more G1 influenced, it might've done a little better because the "true" fans would've gone back for repeat viewings, or even seen it a first time. But as it stands, without the precious G1...it's still a box office success and that cannot be denied.

It made new fans, rekindled interest in lost ones, and made present ones appreciate what they have, what they're getting and what is to come.

G1 was the building blocks of the mythos, but think of it like a parent....once you raise the child (Beast Wars, Beast Machines, the new movie, etc...) you've done your job and it's time to let that child flourish. It's walking, talking, and breathing on it's own...it learned everything it needed to and now it's living it's own life and having it's own style. And that is what's happening here. We're seeing the next generation of TransFormers, and while G1 was the key component, it isn't anymore.

TransFormers is a success without G1, and it doesn't need it. It just doesn't turn it's back on it entirely and those of you who feel a need to bitch about it, should be grateful for the fact that you aren't forgotten, no matter how much you claim to be.

It's time to embrace the future, and fondly remember the past. If you're constantly looking back, you're never looking forward...and time is always moving forward. At a certain point, you'll end up hitting a brick wall and go nowhere.

well going by your logic, since i am an armada born fan ( my first tf was armada smokescreen, i loved him, but then i found the internet  ) i should be demanding hoards of minicons. instead, i want hoards of legends figures.

also, i cried when i first saw smokescreen get killed. dayum, that was cold of the writers.

You obviously didn't get the point of my original post because that's an absolutely horrible analogy. A more accurate analogy would be to say, "That's like asking, can we get the Rolling Stones to play more of their new songs in concert and less of their old songs?", which IMO would be a fair thing to ask for since I'm sure there are many fans of their's that love hearing the old stuff but would prefer to hear more new stuff.

Phenotype wrote:I'll admit it guys, I'm starting to feel disheartened about the future of the Transformers franchise. I feel like Hasbro, Takara, and a large portion of the fans believe that the success of the brand relies largely on never-ending G1 homages and G1 reissues. I certainly mean no offense to those of you out there who love G1, I loved it back in the day and I acknowledge that without G1 we wouldn't have anything we've got now but I'm getting sick of everything always being about G1.

I feel like Transformers isn't really moving forward, why does Optimus Prime always have to be the leader of the Autobots? Why does he always have to be either a fire truck or semi truck? Why does he always have to be red and blue? I feel like it's just the same stuff rehashed again and again.

The spark in Transformers is dying, originality has taken a backseat to nostalgia. I feel like most people don't care or maybe wish it was all G1 all the time, but this collector is losing his will to collect. I'm not looking forward to the new animated series, the next movie will probably be great but they'll cram another 10 G1 characters in there instead of giving us awesome new original characters like Barricade.

I feel like the brand really needs to get away from G1 and do something fresh and unique. Honestly, would you guys stop buying TF's just because there's no Prime or Megs? Who cares as long as the figures are awesome? Is it really that important?

I know I'm going to get 50 replies saying G1 is the best evarr and everything should be a G1 homage, I just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there that's craving something new and different. Is there?

I totally disagree. The 'homage' the G1 is nothing more than a marketing strategy. Why?

B/c there are so many of us that relate to and know of it, and will shell out big bucks for it.

In addition, even the casual collectors will remember how big Transformers were in the 80's. Generation One and its characters are ICONS. To ignore that part of the fandom, and its potential for profit for a company, would be absolutely idiotic.

If Hasbro wanted to solely cater to the G1 fans, we'd have a continuation of G1 itself, not some offshoot. We'd have more than 5 or 6 classic figures released a year. We'd have a completely different looking cartoon about to debut...

Don't get all down in the dumps if you dislike G1. Hasbro has made some bold decisions in the past. It will likely do so again, and the G1 fans will be groaning... Just as they did in the early days of Beast Wars.

As far as leaving Gen 1 behind? No, it won't happen. The mythos are too deeply tied into what it established so long ago.

g1 is part of what made transformers what is today. Without hasbro taking failing japanies property called diclone and reimaging it into transformers. I really don't think we would have the movie or the new animated show. Phenotype what would you have them do to freshen things up all read in your post is how they won't step away from g1 and try something bold and new, but I didn't read anywhere in the post what you would do to change the brand up.

Yeah, G1 started TRANSFORMERS. Diaclone and Microman are different Series. And without G1 there'd BE NO TRANSFORMERS FRANCHISE.

Without Daiclone and Microman where would they get the idea out of thin air? Also the new animated series will be the BEST! (this is my opinion i know ill get flamed ny one of you geewunners so dont)

Uh, that's my point. You'd have no Transformers without G1. Diaclone and Microman were essentially dying in Japan, and they were released to the Western world as G1. If that hadn't been done, we wouldn't be here. (ON this forum, I mean.)

Yep. God g1 toys are like bricks with moving arms they also piss me off cuz my prowl broke and his back window and to window . SOME ONE SEND ME A REPLACEMENT!!!!!!But scense this new series is wrote by the guy who did beast wars it will be good. In beastwars was my first transformers and what made me like it was not the animation (wich i dont see is such a big deal)It was how it had few characters so you could focus on certain ones (instaed of having like 4 or 5 characters show up in one episode say a few lines then dosent come back to like 50 episodes later). You really got to know the character especially dinobot it was a pretty sad moment when dinobot died I was like no you killed my favortie one it was really sad for me.This new animated series has only a few characters to focus on to Autobots-Optimus,BumbleBee,Ratchet,Prowl,Bulkhead,Mabey the dino bots. Decepticons-Megatron,Starscream,Lugnut,BlackArachina(THANK YOU HASBRO),Blitzwing,LockDown,Soundwave,Shockwave. Serriously I havent been able to name all the characters by memeory sense beastwars and i can again i like that feel.Well anyway the new animated series looks like its going to be the best yet and sense the guy who dose the best writing writes it it makes me happy.CHINA'S FACTORYS GET YOUR ASSES TO EBAY AND PUT UP SOME ANIMATED TOYS!!!       The only thing i have found of dissapointing news with the new Tf series is that Venus Terzo isnt voicing Blackarachnia. But ill guess ill have to see how the other girl dose....
