- Weapon: Switch Blade Tail
"The seeds of the future, lie buried in the past." -Optimus Primal. He's right.
G1 was the starting point for all of this, and what is to come.
Someone mentioned, earlier in the thread, that this all started from Microman, etc. While this is true for the toys, it isn't for the show. The show imbued the toys with life and actually gave them personalities we could connect and identify with.
So, with that in mind, I say we should embrace G1 and thank the people at the helm of it, for giving us a grand 20+ years. If it wasn't for their hard work, and creating new figures, etc....we wouldn't be here right now.
With that said....TransFormers has gone in so many directions and got to walking on it's own two legs as a name, that it doesn't require a G1 infusion to stay alive. Homage, or otherwise.
The new movie is proof of that. Oh sure, there were a few G1 homages in it, but that was more to appease the fans, not to actually tie it into G1. Bay himself said that he didn't care for what came before...so that right there, coming from the man who directed it himself, said basically that this is a reboot.
A ragtag handful of Autobots with slightly altered personalities...
Prime: More human. (He was nothing short of fantastic. He was more realistic. G1, every 10 seconds I thought he was going to put on a cape and they'd play a superhero theme.)
Ironhide: Definitely not the G1 Ironhide. (Gun toting crazy, even with the humans, but in all fairness....he's meant to be Prime's security, beyond his weapons expertise. Plus after all that he's seen, he would absolutely find the humans to be a threat and wish to protect himself. He of course learns that he's wrong in the end. G1 Ironhide was a fighter, but got in more trouble than necessary and was more of an irritating old man. Kinda brainless, just running into the heat of battle.)
Jazz: Modernized. (Fast, cool, knowledgeable, in that case, yes...he's like his G1 counterpart. However, this one's far more realistic than the original. And his use of words are quite different... "'Sup lil' bitches?" gonna see that in G1? I don't think so.)
Bumblebee: Everything cool about the original not only bettered, but every aspect of him is just...wow. (He looks good, he's fast, he's whipsmart, he's tough as nails and not afraid to die, he still retains an adorable nature as well. His G1 counterpart is a VW Bug. Camaro clearly wins here. His G1 counterpart is fast and smart, but not enough to save himself time and again, and while he thought he was "10 feet tall and bulletproof" he was anything but.)
Ratchet: Oh so much better...(Here, he's like a nice old country doctor with a big heart, and no nonsense attitude. When he told Prime about killing himself over the Allspark, he wasn't being a whiny bitch or irritating. He was giving his true opinion and it was good advice, meant with the best intentions. His G1 counterpart was always whining, and while he did his job, and it was exemplary...he was always being a bitch.)
The movie proved that you could get TransFormers to walk on it's own two feet, sans G1. And it's a massive box office hit, over half a billion dollars worldwide now. If it was more G1 influenced, it might've done a little better because the "true" fans would've gone back for repeat viewings, or even seen it a first time. But as it stands, without the precious G1...it's still a box office success and that cannot be denied.
It made new fans, rekindled interest in lost ones, and made present ones appreciate what they have, what they're getting and what is to come.
G1 was the building blocks of the mythos, but think of it like a parent....once you raise the child (Beast Wars, Beast Machines, the new movie, etc...) you've done your job and it's time to let that child flourish. It's walking, talking, and breathing on it's own...it learned everything it needed to and now it's living it's own life and having it's own style. And that is what's happening here. We're seeing the next generation of TransFormers, and while G1 was the key component, it isn't anymore.
TransFormers is a success without G1, and it doesn't need it. It just doesn't turn it's back on it entirely and those of you who feel a need to bitch about it, should be grateful for the fact that you aren't forgotten, no matter how much you claim to be.
It's time to embrace the future, and fondly remember the past. If you're constantly looking back, you're never looking forward...and time is always moving forward. At a certain point, you'll end up hitting a brick wall and go nowhere.
