EARTHQUAKE!!!

About an hour ago, an Earthquake started about 24 miles from where I live and it stretched to New York and South Carolina! It was a 5.9, and from what I hear, there's not much damage or many injuries, but damn. That was exciting. I'm seriously terrified, though of an aftershock.

I felt it here in West Virginia. It was very minor, and there was no damage at all. Only lasted a few seconds, and I didn't think much of it till I saw there was an earthquake on the news.

That was an interesting experience (I'm in South Jersey). I live in an old twin house where slight shaking isn't unheard of (thunder, washing machines, trains, heavy traffic, etc.), though that was far stronger.

No damage or injuries here. A few things fell of the shelves, but nothing broke.

I felt it all the way over here in western Pennsylvania. It was a real baby shake, but still somewhat shocking since I've never experienced one.

Felt it when it hit. Was in the Giant grocery store, standing at the deli counter, having just ordered some deli ham, when I noticed the deli display moving on its own. Then I felt the floor move. Then I heard the rattling of the signs and lights hanging from the ceiling.

First thought that came through my mind was, "Was that an earthquake or an explosion?"

OMG, we felt a little here in Vermont. I noticed our standing lamp was shaking, and my girlfriend and her daughter swore they felt something. That explains it.

Wow, must have been powerful if it was felt up and down the Eastern Coast and into the Midwest. I thought a 5.9 wasn't that powerful...

It only took place half a mile below ground. The reason it was felt so far is because it was so shallow.

I've heard of people who want to "shake up Washington" but I never knew they had meant it literally

The only time there was an Earthquake in my area (3.4 or something minor like that), I was in a building with a raised floor on bearing specifically designed to minimize earthquake effects. The only time I was ever in that building too. Talk about coincidence.

Actually it was about 4mi, but due to differences in geology, earthquakes on the east coast are felt over a wider area than those on the west coast. There was a 5.3 in Colorado last night, and basically no one even noticed.

Anyway, we felt this one in Pittsburgh alright, kind of a rolling motion. This makes quake #2 for me; I was about 10-15 miles from a 4.1 in Charleston, SC back in '92. Felt that one a lot stronger.

Same here. I live in Meadville, and it was felt here too. More like a smooth swaying motion, rather than a rock and shake kind of feel.

Thing is though, when you're asleep (like I was, taking a nap) and your bed starts swaying enough to wake you, you get nauseous.

Going from stationary and calm to WTF and swaying back and forth on something that should be rock solid...yeah, pleasant waking experience.

I was in the shower at the time. I could turn my experience into a porno!

Steamhammer and the Tremor Down Under

(Steamhammer is my porn name; the Transformers reference is unintentional)

I know this was scary and serious, but now that it's over and no one was killed and no serious damage was done, I think we can laugh about it, at least a little bit.

This isn't mine, but I had to share because this is just too funny.

West Coast says hi and welcome to the party ;) It's interesting just how different they are, I remember when we had a 6.8 back in 2001, and it didn't spread damage that far, sure it was felt but not drastically, I'm pretty sure damage didn't leave the Puget Sound area.

Lol! My house was only 24 miles from the epicenter of the entire thing, and absolutely nothing fell over.

Saw in the paper today that the earthquake caused the chimney of the Barbour County Courthouse(West Virginia) to fall off. It was only cosmetic damage, and the chimney already had issues.

So yeah I guess it did cause some slight damage out here. No injuries that I know of, which is good.
