Time to finish the Wreckers!

31: SS-63 Topspin

- Robot Mode -
More so than any other figure I’ve worked on in the past, I went through a LOT of different blue paints before finding the base coat that was right for Topspin. After numerous combinations of no less than 5 different blue paints, I found a mix of Decoart ultramarine blue with a little bit of Folkart blue sapphire that I really like!

I added the usual gunmetal primarily to the chest and arms, and complemented that with silver, gold, and copper. Topspin has some of the better clear shots on screen, despite his relatively short screen time, that made detail work in robot mode that much easier. The “LOWE’S” text on Topspin’s right leg (actually just “LOWE”) was something I hadn’t planned on initially, but after my practice in numbering with Leadfoot, I felt confident enough to pull it off.

- Vehicle Mode -

Much like Leadfoot, vehicle mode was the more challenging of the two modes to paint. This was especially the case with the numbering – rather than the flat areas for Leadfoot’s numbering, the areas around where the numbers go on Topspin are very cluttered. This made taping off the numbers basically impossible, so I had to freestyle them. It took several passes to get ones I was happy with.

The other most difficult part of alt mode was the red, silver, and blue curved sections (between the machine guns and the spoiler). Getting everything to line up between the 3 pieces found on that area was tricky, and I found that painting it in robot mode made things a little easier.

With Topspin complete, I wanted to get all the Wreckers together for some group shots!

Working on these figures was a very challenging but rewarding process. Each one introduced new and unique issues to work on - from the small sponsor logos to the larger ones and especially numbering, which I think became more difficult with each Wrecker. Learning how to do that has gone on to help me on other projects - especially Sentinel Prime and the flames on my upcoming update for SS-44 Optimus Prime!

Just to give an update, I intend to finish Hightower this weekend. Robot mode is nearly done!

I was also just accepted to medical school - and not only that, but I'll do my clinical years where my family just bought a house! I've been praying for a long time about whether this was what I'm supposed to do, and God has blessed me in ways I didn't think were possible. Customs projects will be slowing down because of this, but I'll make sure to keep at it and work on some projects when I can!

- Robot Mode -

In robot mode, I started with a gunmetal base coat (I feel like Decoart's gunmetal is my version of Bob Ross' titanium white), and painted over the yellow sections in white before going over them again with flat sunflower to get a lighter shade of yellow to match alt mode. Various silver and copper paint apps were added throughout as well.

The red and white caution stripes felt like a good inclusion after incorporating them on other Constructicons. I also went a little asymmetrical with the shoulders, having one in white to match the cab section on that side of the body. I think this adds a nice bit of variety to bot mode.

- Vehicle Mode -

For vehicle mode, I went with a lighter yellow base coat to better match the on-screen vehicle. I wasn't sure how to feel about that at first, but I like it and I think it adds some more variety to the Constructicons who have a lot of yellow going on. I painted the cab section in white, again based on the vehicle we see in ROTF, and added details primarily in silver and a flat black. The crane arm and the support thing behind it should technically be solid yellow, but I think I struck a good balance between the overall yellow color and detail work.

To finish up vehicle mode, I used panel liner to weather the main body of the excavator, and mud weathering on the treads to make them look dirty.

Alright, so there's a slight change of plans.

See, I've packed up all of my Studio Series figures that have boxes. However, I got Offroad Bumblebee from a collector's store loose, so no box. Since I didn't think it would take too long, I'm going to get that project done before taking my break to get settled in at med school. I'll have it finished either later today (if the rain ever stops so I can flat coat) or tomorrow!

- Robot Mode –

It’s a little weird writing the robot mode section first, because I actually painted vehicle mode first and robot mode was a continuation of those decisions I made for alt mode. I started off with gunmetal (of course) and flat yellow over the yellow plastic sections to make sure they match the painted yellow areas. I also added some silver trim to the helmet and yellow armor pieces like we see in the movie.

While I did stick to the general design of Bee’s appearance in the movie, I took some liberties with the small detail work, since the original design didn’t have much of that. I primarily did this with copper in small accents around bot mode, but also some flat black and silver to help break up the gunmetal. I feel like I struck a good balance between detail and screen accuracy with this one.

My rule for weathering is that I’ll do it if the alt mode has weathering on it (Ex: DOTM Megatron), and Offroad Bee fit that category. I started with sponge brushing some gunmetal (a technique I’m starting to like more and more), and then used some panel liner. Finally, I used mud weathering on the chest piece, feet, and arms. Honestly, I went a little further with the weathering than what we see in the movie, but I’m still happy with it and I felt like it was good practice for those techniques.

OB bot side pose.jpg

OB bot front pose.jpg

OB bot crouch.jpg

OB bot close.jpg

-Vehicle Mode –

In vehicle mode, my first step was to paint over the yellow plastic in a flat yellow to better match the painted yellow parts of the figure. I then used flat black for the area behind the seats, the center of the tires, the dashboard, and the bumper. I added silver details for the various handles and pieces around the Jeep, and picked out the lights and reflective pieces in red and orange. Some flat rust for the straps and red for the markings on the gas tank finished off the detail work for this mode.

I then moved on to weathering, first with a sponge brush technique and gunmetal paint, and then with small amounts of panel liner to add a worn look. I then used a little bit of mud weathering on the tires, lower grill, and sides of the Jeep. Sealing all that up with flat coat finished this mode!

(Small side note, my Offroad Bee was missing the steering wheel when I got it, thus why it’s absent)

We just hit another really big milestone!

Normally I'd like to have a poll or something to celebrate, but my options are pretty limited right now, I only have a couple figures with me currently. I can show you what's coming up next, though!
Next projects.jpg

Scrapper is the next project, which I've started work on now that I'm mostly set up here at med school. Not sure if Thundercracker will immediately follow, depends on when I get my hands on Grindor.

My plan is to swap out figures when I go home for break, so this Christmas I'll be able to take Scrapper and Thundercracker back and bring back some new projects, one of which will be Overload. I don't have another one picked to bring with Overload yet, maybe we'll run a poll to pick that project once we get around that time?

Thank you all once again for checking back on this page to see the updates, and I'm excited to finish this next batch of repaints and share them with you!

- Robot Mode -

Scrapper was a fun one to work on, there's quite a bit of good reference shots of the ILM render which made detail work much easier. Scrapper has a lot of yellow going on, so I had to be a little more careful with my gunmetal work, striking a balance between solid yellow and going overboard with gunmetal. There were plenty of fun details to add, like the lights on the torso and red and white striping on the shoulders, and the wiring on the arms and legs. I was a little unsure of how to do the claw arm, but wsettled on a 2-sided approach that leaves the now silver painted sections primarily visible in robot mode, and the yellow side visible in alt mode to blend in with the scoop.

I used silver dry brushing to emulate the extensive paint scratches and scuffs seen on Scrapper's renders., and then intended to use panel liner for further weathering, only to find that my panel liner didn't survive the trip over here. I improvised some using some black acrylic paint and the corresponding thinner, and it actually worked out pretty nicely.

- Vehicle Mode -

I don't have as much to write about for Scrapper's alt mode - it's pretty far removed from the actual construction vehicle, so there weren't as many opportunities to incorporate details from the real thing. I picked out the ladders in silver and a few details on the cab section, and used gunmetal on the teeth of the scoop. I continued the weathering from robot mode using my homemade model wash, silver dry brushing, mud weathering on the sides, and sand weathering on the tires.

Hey everyone! It's been a little while since the last update, so let me fill you in on how things are going.

First off, I've been working a little bit on Thundercracker over these last few weeks. I'm really not sure about it though, the Allspark blue accents were originally intended as showing stored-up electricity (with a name like Thundercracker and the lightning bolts on alt mode I figured it would make sense), but I think it makes robot mode a little too much. I'd really like to hear some feedback on this!
TC Prototype.jpg

With test 1 down at Med school and my prior project completed (a 1/72 Bandai Resistance X-Wing), I finally got a chance to start paint work on Grindor! I'm going with a lighter gray base coat and a darker gunmetal for the core robot, similar to the original ROTF voyager. Here's a look at the head sculpt so far:
Grindor head.jpg

Not sure which of these I'll finish first, but I am working on them!

Here's today's update!

First off, Thundercracker is planned for this weekend! Test 2 will be done by that point, so I'll have plenty of time to finish the last few details in alt mode and get robot mode completed. I decided to go in a different direction with robot mode from the picture I uploaded last time, I'm excited to share it with you all!

I've paused work on Grindor for the time being. I have a good idea of what I'd like to do, but I think I may want to try some modding work to get him closer to a CH-53. That will take a while to get the proper resources, so it will be more of a long-term project.

Instead, I'll be working on Jolt after TC is done.

See you all soon with a finished Thundercracker!

About time, huh? Med school is keeping me VERY busy, but I still take some time to work on customs every now and then! I don't think I'll have as long of a wait for the next few projects.

- Robot Mode -

Thundercracker was a challenging figure to work on, as he doesn't appear in the movies. There's no reference pictures besides the box art, so Thundercracker was pretty much entirely freestyle work. One of the first ideas I had was that Thundercracker would have some electrical abilities like Jolt, so I had some allspark blue highlights. That didn't have quite the effect I wanted, so I redid those parts in a slightly darker metallic blue, which I think communicates that point more effectively.

I also toned down the amount of red details from my early plans, a move that makes the design feel more cohesive. I used a lot of copper to differentiate from Starscream's heavy use of gold accents, and added a fair amount of flat gunmetal to break up the blue.

TC Bot shield.jpg

TC Bot close.jpg

TC bot 5.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -

My first goal in alt mode was to integrate the gray portions of the wings to the rest of the wing. I painted over all the blue surfaces of the figure with gloss dark blue (since I couldn't quite color match the original), and continued the stripes with the help of some model tape. I then used lots of flat gunmetal on the sides of the fuselage, a stripe down the middle, along the intakes, and broad portions of the wings to add more interest than just the blue. I added small amounts of red and silver to continue the thunderbolts on the tail fins, and various silver details.

The missiles are painted like Hellfire missiles, which the original sculpt of the missiles resembles.

- Robot Mode -

In robot mode, I wanted to review all of the CG renders and screen footage we have of Bumblebee in this mode to try and catch details that I missed on SS-01. I still had a general framework of what I wanted to do based on SS-01, but I changed up several things after reviewing the footage, such as the gold rings on the outside of the feet and the stripes on the outside of the shins. From there, I used silver and copper detailing to highlight various details, and then moved ahead with weathering. I used model wash over the whole figure, then used a sponge brush to add rust spots.

Finally, I wanted to repaint the chest area above the grill to be more accurate. SS-01 put stripes in this location, but that's actually not accurate. I used black paint and some thin lines to make this area look more like the on-screen model's chest area, a result that I'm happy with.

- Vehicle Mode -

In vehicle mode, I had more of an opportunity to diverge from SS-01, since I was furthering the weathered look. Using several reference pictures (some of which I took myself! I got to see one of the screen-used 76 Camaros at a car museum in Tennessee a long time ago), I updated the rust spots and other weathering details. I repainted the gray areas where the paint has worn through, and smeared flat gray over the stripes to make them look faded (yes, custom faded! xD). I added a few small details like on SS-01, with the black border on the bumper, silver for the headlights, orange for the small side lights, and silver on part of the taillights, and white for the license plate. I also fixed the stripes on the rear of the car, which were partially absent on this release.

One small detail that I'm really happy with is the silver trim around the front and rear windshields, something I messed on SS-01 that I was happy to integrate here.

Finally, I made some model wash with acrylic thinner and black paint to make the car look more worn, and gave it a final flat coat to complete the look.

:michaelbay: 300,000 Views! :michaelbay:

We've reached another big milestone today - 300,000 views! I'm always really grateful that you all keep checking back on these updates, it means a lot!

While things have slowed down a bit recently, I am still working on projects and will continue to do so! I haven't quite figured out what my plans are to celebrate (I'm thinking maybe another poll for a future project?), I'll be sure to have an update soon with that.

In the meantime - here's a look at where we've been, and where we're going!

Alright everyone, here's our next poll to celebrate 300,000 views!

I'll be heading home this Christmas, where I'll have an opportunity to swap out some projects to bring back with me. Overload is planned to be one of them, but the other is for you all to decide! I'll be adding votes from TFW to this as well.

Crankcase (TLK Berserker) & Crowbar

Brawl

B-127 (Bayverse styled repaint)

Decepticon Bikes (Repaint of SS Arcee/Chromia/Elita 1 based on the Human Alliance arcade game)

I won't be able to get to work on this project until after I'm back from Christmas break, but I will complete it first before I continue working on Overload!

The 300K Poll has ended and we have our winner!

The Decepticon Bikes from Human Alliance/Shadows Rising took the lead with 8 votes! Here's some screenshots of them from the game to give you an idea of what's coming (there are more varieties than these though, we see some solid red ones in Shadows Rising):

Brawl took second with 3 votes, I'll be sure to keep that in mind this upcoming summer!

37: SS-75 Jolt

UPDATE: I repainted portions of Jolt's robot mode based on the CG renders posted by Sam Smith on Instagram!

- Robot Mode -

My first challenge with Jolt was finding the right shade of blue. I looked through some different spray cans online, and nothing seemed quite what I was looking for. I decided to try some Testor's gloss dark blue, and while it's maybe a little darker than the actual paint, it's very close and I like how it looks!

Finding reference pictures was interesting for Jolt since he has so little screen time (and when he does appear it's usually in the background). I was able to use the box art as a model for painting the head (thankfully so, because that is the only good reference image we have of Jolt's real head). I was able to use some of the concept art as a basis, since the body was pretty accurate to what we see on screen, even if the head wasn't. I added the usual gunmetal as a base, used a lot of gold accents throughout, and a little bit of red here and there.

The whips were painted in a metallic blue that I think lends itself well to the electric effect. I was initially going to use a lighter blue since it didn't stand out against some of the prototype blues I used, but with the dark blue it works pretty well.

- Vehicle Mode -

There's a lot of details on Jolt's alt mode that I didn't know about until I started working on this project, and even then there were some I didn't find till the end. There's the small blue portion of the lower lights on the front, the thin red lights on the back, and even some small red lines on the mirrors. Besides the blue base layer, I added orange to the headlights, gold for both Chevy bowties, a dark gunmetal to the roof portions and trim around the bottom, in addition to the details listed above.

38: Recon Barricade (From SS-28 Barricade)

Here's that something different I was talking about a little bit ago! I had an extra Barricade from the Buzzworthy 2-pack, and I decided on the recon repaint from the 07 line. It's not an exact copy of the deco from that figure, but I used it as an inspiration.

- Robot Mode -

Using the 07 figure as more of a guideline than an actual set of rules, I started off with gunmetal around the joints and in a few different areas of the figure. The 07 figure has two shades of blue - the more standard blue seen in alt mode, and a metallic blue that only shows up in bot mode. I incorporated both, as well as a lot of silver to match alt mode. I had to use my acrylic silver for parts of the chest and head, since the enamel paint doesn't stick to the rubbery plastic. I also used a few gold accents here and there that aren't present on the original, but I like the added variation to the color palette.

Recon bot 3.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -
To start off vehicle mode, I used a silver spray paint (the original was a light gray, but I felt silver was more appropriate), while covering up the "POLICE" text and some of the other decals in alt mode. After gloss coating to protect the silver layer, I started work on the blue sections on the sides. Painting around the police text was tricky, but I was able to get it to work. I added a few more details present on my original Barricade repaint, like the red and orange lights on the sides and the silver bits in the center of the tires.

Hey everyone! It's been a little while so I wanted to update you all on what's coming up next!

With the completion of Recon Barricade, I've finished all of the figures I have with me at the moment (except Grindor, who we'll talk about in a minute). I'll be heading home for Christmas soon though, and there I'll be swapping out some figures to bring back with me! The current plan is to bring back. . .

- Overload (The last Constructicon, btw! Very close to a finished custom Devastator)

- My duplicate Arcee Triplets (for the Decepticon Bikes project, the 300K poll winner)

- Any new figures I pick up at that time - I'm definitely thinking about picking up another SS-74 for a new project soon!

I won't be able to start working on these figures until after I get back, but once I am back I'll have a steady stream of things to work on for quite a while!

Now, let's talk about Grindor!

While I have already started paint work and have a pretty clear idea of what I want to do, I would like to try kitbashing/3D printing some parts for alt mode to get it closer to the CH-53 we see in ROTF. My plan is to add 3 parts:
1. A new, flatter nose piece
2. An adapter for the tail rotor so that it's canted at 20 degrees in alt mode
3. A new engine piece for alt mode (The CH-53 has 3 engines as opposed to the MH-53's 2) that I might be able to kitbash if I can find a 1/72 CH-54 model

This will take a long time to work on, of course, so in the meantime I'll definitely keep working on the paint.

I don't want to make a post here without a picture for you all to see, so here's all the finished projects I have with me here!

Got one more update for you guys till we get to more uploads!

First let's go through the list of figures I brought back with me to paint:

SS-23 KSI Sentry
SS-52 Arcee/Chromia/Elita-1 (To be turned into Decepticon bikes)
SS-66 Overload
SS-74 ROTF Bumblebee (To be turned into Stealth Bumblebee)
SS-76 Thrust
SS-78 ROTF Sideswipe

My original plan was to work on the Decepticon bikes first, but I'm missing the metallic green paint I need for the one bike. While I am working on them, it'll be a little while before I get that paint. Stealth Bumblebee is coming up next (hoping to upload next weekend), and once I get that green paint I'll have the Decepticon bikes done shortly!

39: Stealth Bumblebee (From SS-74 ROTF Bumblebee)

- Robot Mode -

With this repaint I incorporated influences from many different iterations of Stealth Bumblebee. The head sculpt is based on the Prime 1 Studios bust, The legs (and parts of the chest) are based on the Stealth Bumblebee skin from the ROTF video game, and of course this all traces back to the original Stealth Bumblebee from the 07 toyline. I incorporated some new influences as well, like the yellow sections on the arm shields, and the stripe outlines (which wasn't my idea actually, more on that in the alt mode section).

While I didn't want to go all out with it, I did incorporate Allspark blue in a few small places as a reference to the original Stealth Bee - behind the shoulders, small bits on the forearms, and the plasma cannon barrel.
Stealth Bee main 2.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -

I have to give a big shout out to TFW2005's erwinsims for suggesting that I paint the outline of the stripes in alt mode - it ended up looking really cool! It wasn't as difficult to implement as I thought, I just put tape around the stripes (leaving some of the original yellow plastic visible around the stripes), and then painted/scraped to touch them up. I used flat gunmetal for the grill, hubcaps, and the lower portion on the back to stand out against the black base coat fo the figure while still fitting in the stealthy theme. I then picked out the exhaust pipes, headlights, foglights, and chevy bowties in silver; and used red and orange for the reflective bits on the sides of the car.
