These are just absolutely gorgeous! Any plans to repaint any Studio Series bots from the Bumblebee movie? I'd love to see what you do with those. Awesome job! ;)^

Thank you very much! I’d like to pick up Offroad (Jeep) Bumblebee at some point, if I do I’ll definitely paint it up.

18: SS-56 Shockwave

UPDATE: I revisited my paint work, replacing the gold accents with a more accurate color (and with better placement), 3D printed and painted a new arm blade, and even spruced up Wheelie, Brains, and the Paratrooper!

By the way, did you know that Shockwave's horns in DOTM are asymmetrical, and the Studio Series figure actually reflects that? I didn't until just recently!

There were a few surprises for me when I took a look at Shockwave's CG renders. First, the heel spurs made from ROTF Megatron's vehicle mode face guards are actually pretty screen accurate - they don't extend quite as far as they do on the figure, but they are there. The most relevant surprise to this custom, however, is just how much silver and gunmetal there is on Shockwave. The purple is actually very subtle on Shockwave in the movie, so that was something I kept in mind as I worked on this custom.

- Robot Mode -

The first step to painting Shockwave was a base coat - this was gunmetal for some sections (such as the arm blades, sections of the cannon, and the hand), and a blue/purple mixture for much of the figure. Once this base layer was done, I used flat gunmetal dry brushing for the acrylic gunmetal sections, and silver dry brushing for the purple sections. I then tried a sponge brush technique with flat gunmetal, adding further weathering and trying to simulate the very textured weathering seen on Shockwave on the movie. I also used silver dry brushing on the cannon barrel and hose, which gives it a nice metallic look.

While weathering is a skill I've been working over time with some of these customs, specific detail work is what I enjoy most and is my main focus when painting. Shockwave's model doesn't have a ton of that, though, weathering is the main focus. I latched onto what specific details I could paint, though, such as the gold pieces throughout and the scar on the right side of Shockwave's face. I used gloss red for the eye and fusion cores (which looks really nice on the eye in particular). I added some (not necessarily screen accurate) detail work to the cannon and back, but we don't get a great view of all of these parts in the movie so I think I have some gray area to work with (pun not intended). I also tried to add some contrast to break up the monotony in some sections, such as the darker gunmetal used between the ribs to help define them against the surrounding "ribcage".

Shockwave bot walk.jpg

Shockwave bot back.jpg

Shockwave bot close.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -

Since Shockwave's vehicle mode is not seen on-screen and there aren't many parts dedicated to that mode, there isn't much I've added paint-wise specifically for vehicle mode. The main thing I added were some extra red optics to the heel spurs/ face guards, I thought it'd be a neat addition. Other than that, the vehicle mode just offers some different views of the robot mode paint work.

- NEST Paratrooper -

I'm really excited to be getting more human figures in Studio series, and I really like the paratrooper that comes with Shockwave! I repainted the face and hands, with gunmetal, silver, and gray accents on the soldier himself. I also used a sharpie to color the parachute to be more accurate with the black stripes down the middle and sides.

Paratrooper 1.jpg

- Wheelie & Brains -

Don't think I forgot these guys! While they are very small, they're very detailed, which allowed me to do some paint work. Wheelie got gunmetal and silver accents alogn with some small amounts of gold, and Brains got gold and light blue paint apps.

19: SS-53 Mixmaster

Ready to mix things up is the winner of the 20K views poll, Mixmaster! It's pretty crazy that the views on this page have more than doubled since that poll, thank you all very much for continuing to check back and see my customs!

Edit 1/27/2021: Added Decepticon logo to barrel and updated gallery.

- Robot Mode -

I wasn't quite sure what to do with Mixmaster at first - other than slather the whole thing in gunmetal. Mixmaster has a lot of gray going on, and while that was something I wanted to represent, I also wanted to keep sections and details distinct to better look like the on-screen model. I ended up using several different grays, gunmetals, and silvers - along with quite a few gold details - to break up sections that otherwise might be plain.

For reference I used some screenshots from ROTF and the DOTM game, as well as some renders and other customs of Mixmaster done in the past. I did a lot of improvising, however, as well. One example of this are the details on Mixmaster's shins. I didn't want to just leave that area in one color so I added some made-up details to help make the area more interesting.

Chrome was used in just a few locations for robot mode (although some of the vehicle mode chrome shines through in this mode as well, like the smokestacks), such as the alt. mode side vents by Mixer's neck, some of the parts on the head, and the canisters on his back. I also added more red paint to the eyes, since the original's were very hard to see.

One last thing I painted were the insides of the cement mixer - much like Scrapmetal's shield, there was just too much good detail there to not paint. I primarily used sublime green for two purposes; in robot mode, it looks like some of the toxins and chemicals stored in the shields, and in combined mode it mimics the green glow of the vortex grinder.

Mix bot pose 1.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -

Vehicle mode saw the addition of a lot of chrome - specifically over the wheels, smokestacks, grill, and some of the smaller pieces like the lights on top and the side vents. gunmetal was used for the area behind the tires and the panels covering the rear tires. I painted the red and white stripes on the sides, and picked out the tail lights in red. Orange was used for the lights on the roof and grill, and the outer part of the headlights.

EDIT: Using some stickers from a 2009 ROTF sticker sheet as basis, I hand painted a Decepticon logo for the barrel!
Mix alt main1.jpg

Mix alt R.jpg

Mix alt front.jpg

- Combined Mode -

The paint work for combined mode started with a gunmetal coat over Devastator's face. I went back and added more accurate red detailing, and then some white highlights in some of the red sections. Sublime green (the same green used on DOTM Ratchet) was used for the eyes, and various gold and silver paint apps were added. Like I mentioned before, the green paint inside the cement mixer/shields (while not particularly visible unless you move some panels around) also contributes to the glowing green of the vortex grinder.

Paint used:

Metallic silver
Metallic gold
Gloss red
Flat gunmetal
Flat white
Sublime green
Gloss tangerine

Decoart Acrylics:
Gunmetal
Extreme sheen silver

Other:
CraftSmart black paint pen
Molotow liquid chrome marker
Testor's gloss coat

Coming up next is ROTF Megatron and then Leadfoot, both of which I've already started work on. Megatron shouldn't have too much more left to go, but things have slowed down quite a bit with school going again. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy Mixmaster!

20: SS-13 Megatron (Revenge of the Fallen)

- Robot Mode -

I started painting robot mode by spraying the entire figure (except the treads) in metallic silver, and then immediately followed it up with a gloss coat, learning my lesson about how easily silver paint scratches. I then went to detail work - painting gold over the formerly copper sections, and adding a lot of decoart gunmetal to various panels and in the tread sections. I then added more gold, silver, and gunmetal details on top of those sections.

The star of the show on Megatron here is the weathering. I used a lot of techniques on Megatron, blending some of the things I've learned with previous attempts. I first dry brushed with both decoart gunmetal (lighter) and testor's gunmetal (darker), focusing on sections like the thrusters. I then used panel liner over the whole figure to help bring out more of the detail. I used a sponge brush technique in some areas with gunmetal, and finally I used some of my model weathering kits (specifically orange rust, mud, and desert sand) to add even more wear. The mud and sand were primarily used on the treads, and rust was used on the edges of armor pieces like the ones on Megs' legs.

In one last small detail, I used blue for the barrel of the fusion cannon.

- Vehicle Mode -

Vehicle mode was a lot like robot mode: silver base coat, gunmetal and gold detailing, and all of the previously described types of weathering. I used blue for the tank's thrusters (like the fusion cannon), and the desert sand weathering to fit in more with ROTF's setting.

Some brilliant work!

The Helikick-to-Genericon conversion is a thing of beauty, allowing the mold to really shine by discarding the downside of being a bad representation.

Shockwave is also very beautifully done. Well-spotted that in the movie, his purple is really more of a purple patina than an actual dominant color; I noticed the same thing.

Your detail work on Mixmaster is also excellent, everything works nicely. As for Devastator's vortex grinder... It can sometimes be seen glowing a furnace orange in the film, but only as a side effect of stuff getting wrecked inside it. And it doesn't block out the view of all the whirling grinder blades and gears inside his throat.

Thank you very much, Zelda! Glad you like them!

Helikick (now Downwash) was a super fun side project, it was a lot like Scrapmetal where I got to freestyle the paint work. My current headcanon is that he was one of the Chicago Decepticons in DOTM, maybe he was hanging out with Thundercracker during the movie xD

Shockwave was actually a really scary project to tackle because it's a lot more weathering than detail work, but I tried out some new stuff like I mentioned and I'm really happy with it. I actually ended up redoing quite a bit of it midway through because I wanted a more bluish purple, here's what it looked like before I re-added the weathering and gunmetal over those sections:
Shockwave WIP.jpg

Regarding Mixmaster, yeah, I think I'll be removing the green - at least the green in the mouth area, I like it in the mixer panels. I'll probably go over it in flat black and then do silver/gunmetal for some of the details around it.

One last thing - Leadfoot is still a ways from completion, but here's a teaser showing some of the progress so far!

Forgot to comment on Megatron. Superb work with him! All he's missing are the tank wings and an alternate right forearm.

Thanks! I honestly forgot the design had wings, I think the original voyager was the only figure to have them.

I do have that figure, though. . . I might have to see if I can transfer them over somehow (though I think I was missing one of the forward wing sections last I checked).

I finished painting Leadfoot and got it gloss-coated, so it's ready for a photo shoot! Looking to upload it tomorrow.

21: SS-68 Leadfoot

- Robot Mode –
Much like many of my other customs, Leadfoot started by being slathered in gunmetal paint. This was particularly the case with the legs, which were originally nearly entirely red. After the initial gunmetal layer, I used gloss red to repaint the red sections on the legs, as well as adding new red sections to the shoulders, arms, and head. The red sections from the original figure were painted over with the new gloss red as well. From there, I was able to move into detail work.
I have a thing of metallic blue paint I plan to use on Topspin, but that worked great for the visor on Leadfoot. I painted the visor in white at first, and then used the metallic blue to make it brighter. I used the same approach for the sponsor decals with Roadbuster, using colored shapes to mimic the logos. The logos on the arms and legs were fairly straight-forward, but the doors. . .

Oh, the doors. . .

The doors on Leadfoot’s robot mode are very detailed. Not only is there the black and white striping, but there’s also the 42 numbering and a bunch of sponsor decals that are different for each door. Getting the details (particularly the striping and numbering) on one door was hard enough, but I then had to go and duplicate that on the other door. I got the numbering on the right door done fairly quickly, but I repainted the left numbers at least 5 times, probably more. After many long attempts, however, I got it! The doors are definitely the defining details of robot mode for me, so I’m glad I worked with it and got it right.
Leadfoot bot 1.jpg

Leadfoot pose 1 hip.jpg

Leadfoot running pose.jpg

LEadfoot aiming pose.jpg

Leadfoot pose 3 R.jpg

-Vehicle Mode –

While robot mode was the more challenging mode to paint for Roadbuster, vehicle mode was more challenging for Leadfoot. Model masking tape was very important for this mode in particular, especially for the 42 numbering on top. Almost every visible surface was repainted in this mode, including the original red on the figure, and the white target logos and numbering were repainted in a brighter white so they stood out more.
The most difficult part of the vehicle mode paint work was the white partial target logos on the hood of the car. The central target logo itself is actually much larger than the one on the figure, but if I were to paint that, Leadfoot would end up with half a target logo on his chest in robot mode due to transformation. I used the larger scale for the partial logos on the sides, however, since those aren’t restricted by transformation.

Finally, I used similar techniques to Roadbuster for the sponsor decals in vehicle mode, with the colored rectangles and chevy bowtie on the back. The tiny logos on the taillights were tricky, but I’m happy with how they turned out.

- Flat gunmetal
- Metallic silver

Decoart acrylics:

With Leadfoot complete, I’ve finished the paint work on all the figures I have with me at the moment (Except Jetfire, who needs to be repaired first). It’ll be 3 weeks before I’m back home so I can work on some more figures, so in the meantime I’d like to revisit my paint work on DOTM Ratchet. After looking more at footage from the movie, I think there’s more I can add to that figure.

I didn't forget about Steeljaw! I wanted to use as many attachments as I could for the Leadfoot post itself, so I saved Steeljaw for a separate post.

The main thing I wanted to add for Steeljaw was the sunglasses he has in one of the pieces of concept art for DOTM. I love the idea of him having his own wrecker sunglasses, so I accomplished that using a clear blue binder divider.

From there, I modeled the paint work to be similar to Leadfoot with the gunmetal base coat, and gold, silver, gunmetal, and copper detailing. I added some red as well, but I wanted to keep that fairly minimal.

Thanks! I really wasn't sure how Leadfoot was going to turn out after having to repaint that door a bazillion times, but I eventually got it! The wreckers have been some of the most challenging projects I've had so far, but I also learned a lot that I can use on future customs.

I got a bunch of work done on Ratchet today, hoping to upload on this upcoming Tuesday.

Ratchet update is complete! You can check it out using the link on page 1. I added a bunch more paint work, particularly in vehicle mode.

Unfortunately the lighting is pretty crappy right now, if I wasn't leaving tomorrow morning I'd retake them now. Once I'm back I'll retake the pictures and get some better lighting!

Thanks! Yeah, I think I’ll redo that spot before I retake pictures.

I got a bunch of work done today on two new repaint projects, here’s a teaser for one of them!

UPDATE: I went and touched up my paint work for the new gallery, now featuring more accurate work on the chest and arms in robot mode, and better tail lights in alt mode!

- Robot Mode -

The main goal for both modes was to replace the bright red of the original figure with a dark, glossy red as seen in the movie. I happened to have a gloss dark red on hand, and I really like how it looked so I went with it! I used a lot of gunmetal as a base coat for much of the arms and legs, and used a flat gunmetal, silver, gold, and copper for detailing.

The gloss dark red paint used is very thin and transparent, so it doesn't show up very well on darker surfaces. Using a trick I used on barricade, I painted many sections that would be red in white first before then using the red so it shows up better.

I used Decoart's metallic sheen emerald (the paint I used for Roadbuster) on Stinger's eyes/visor, which I think helps it look much more screen accurate.

- Vehicle Mode -

Like in robot mode, I used a gloss dark red to get the base color of the figure closer to what we see on screen. Vehicle mode added another challenge, though: a big, purple Decepticon logo on the front of the car. While it definitely could be argued that Stinger was a Decepticon after Galvatron gives the KSI drones autonomy, the symbol is still inaccurate. I was hoping I could remove the symbol while leaving the shiny gunmetal paint intact, but I don't think that was feasible. I ended up repainting all the gunmetal sections on the car mode with my own gunmetal. I ended up repainting the silver stripes on the sides, too. Some smaller details like the taillights and side vents finished up this mode!

I realized when looking at my SS Ironhide that I hadn't gloss coated it after I finished painting (I didn't start doing this regularly until a little later). In a small update, I touched up the worn paint apps, completely painted the taillights, and got the whole figure gloss coated. Check out some updated Ironhide pics back on page 1!

Also, an announcement: my next custom is SS-55 Scavenger!

I’ve been working on Scavenger for a little while now, but we now have to pack up our house to move. I’ll hopefully be able to resume work in a couple weeks or so. In the meantime, here’s a look at Scavenger’s alt. mode right now. There’s still quite a bit of work and cleaning up to do, but I wanted to give an update since it’s been a while.

While it isn’t set in stone yet, I have done a little bit of paint work on the Arcee triplets, so they may be next when I finish Scavenger.

See you all in a little bit!

After several years of being my primary tool for customs work, my paint brush has broken.

1B14B32A-A21F-4FAE-A30D-9DEFC088109E.jpeg

I’ll be heading out (hopefully) today to get a new one and the paint I need to finish Scavenger. The white paint I was using turned to concrete over the move, so work has temporarily halted, but if all goes well will resume today.

EDIT: New paint and brushes have been acquired. ROTF Bumblebee just needs a couple more finishing touches and a gloss coat for an upload tomorrow, and work on Scavenger has resumed.

EDIT MK.II: I finished ROTF Bee, but the gloss coat caused some of the black paint in robot mode to run. I’m going to have to fix that, so we’re looking at a tomorrow upload now

23: SS-74 Bumblebee (Revenge of The Fallen)

UPDATE: For this gallery update, I refined the paint work for the eyes peeking through the helmet, and added the silver trim around the tail lights like I did for DOTM Bumblebee!

It's been a little while since my last custom upload, it's good to be back in the swing of things! ROTF Bee ran into a couple issues during the process, but it all turned out well. Enjoy!

- Robot Mode -

Considering SS-74 is a retool of SS-49, which I've already painted, I had a pretty good idea going into this custom what I wanted to do. Gunmetal was the base, of course, and I used silver, copper, gold, and a darker gunmetal for detailing.

The first difference from SS-49 comes from the shade of yellow. Pretty much every movie Bumblebee I've painted is within the range that works with Testor's flat yellow. SS-74, however, has a new more orange-ish shade of yellow that's much more screen accurate. I was beginning to worry about finding the right shade of yellow paint when I realized I could mix some of my gloss tangerine with the yellow to get the right color. It worked!

The paint work, even besides the shades of yellow, isn't identical to SS-49. I looked through more movie footage and tried to go for even more detail with this one, putting more silver and darker gunmetal details on the arms and legs. I also had to paint the pinstripes for the stripes on the chest, which was somewhat challenging but I got the hang of it. One very small detail I'm really happy with is the 4 copper-colored dots on each corner of the silver bits on Bee's head. They're super small and hard to see, but I noticed them when looking through footage and had to add them!

I also decided to change things up on the plasma cannon. I detailed it slightly differently, and added some copper detailing that I think really helps it stand out. Bee's plasma cannon in the movies glows orange when fired, but my SS-49 already had a cannon with the orange glow painted inside. Looking back through footage I found that the cannon barrel often flashes blue on the inside right before it fires, and it also glows blue in DOTM when he points it at Sam's boss. To help differentiate SS-74 from SS-49, I painted the inside of the barrel blue.

One last small note, I did take a small creative liberty with paint: The Chevy bowtie on Bee's grill is red/black in vehicle mode but gold in robot mode in the movie. It's technically not an error since Bee does still have a gold bowtie on the back of vehicle mode, but I wanted to have the black and red one in robot mode as well.

ROTF Bee bot pose.jpg

ROTF Bee bot cannon.jpg

ROTF Bee bot arms.jpg

ROTF Bee bot pose 2.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -

SS-74 (at least the Buzzworthy release) has a very unfortunate lack of paint in the front of vehicle mode - large portions of the grill are left unpainted. This was my first aim as I started to paint the figure, and getting getting the central portion of the grill symmetrical took a few tries. Besides that, it was just small details work: the headlights and foglights are painted silver, there's red and orange for the reflective pieces on the sides, gunmetal for the back and silver for the exhaust pipes and license plates.

There are a few things I did with this that I didn't to with SS-49: I continued the stripes on the back ever so slightly, and I painted the vents on the sides in black. I was hoping to do this with panel liner, but the vents are so shallow that model wash doesn't work very well there. Using my new super-thin brush, I was able to get each of the vents.

Studio Series is starting to bring more human figures into the line (which is really cool), and ROTF Bee includes the main human for the first 3 films, Sam! Now, the Sam included with ROTF Bee is mostly black plastic, so while this was intended for an ROTF Sam there's some leeway in there. I decided to paint Sam into his DOTM appearance (specifically the Chicago battle appearance). I painted the jeans by mixing blue and black paint, painted the jacket in gray with a gray-blue shirt, and detailed the shoes! I then mixed a skin tone paint together and repainted the head, neck, and hands; then painted the hair in brown. for this update I even painted the face with eyebrows, eyes with pupils, and a mouth!

Looking to the future, Scavenger is coming up next (for real this time!) and is pretty close to completion. Arcee Triplets are after that, looks like we're on an ROTF binge for a little while!

24: SS-55 Scavenger

It's been a little over a month since I announced work on this project, and while there's been some delays, the finished version is here!

- Robot Mode -

Much like Scrapmetal and a couple other customs I've done, Scavenger's robot mode doesn't appear on-screen in ROTF (ILM actually did recolor Demolishor's robot mode model for Scavenger, though this apparently went unused). I used Demolishor's model as inspiration, inverting many of the details seen on that model.

The key things I knew I wanted to do going into this were the white excavator scoop/forearms, the white with the pinstripe on the shoulder panels, and orange for the eyes. From there, I took some inspiration from Demolishor with the striping on the support struts for the wheels and a lot of the paint on the head. Various gunmetals and silvers were used, as always. The wheels (and the treads in alt. mode) were dry brushed silver, and the overall figure was sprayed with a flat coat (I figured that would work with the Excavator better than gloss. . . and I'm also currently out of gloss coat).

My favorite details are the black and yellow caution striping, it was an idea I had late in the project and really adds more visual interest, I think, to robot mode.

- Vehicle Mode -

Unlike robot mode, we do have an on-screen appearance by Scavenger's alt mode. While both the figure itself and my paint work take some liberties from that excavator, I had some good reference for painting this mode. The excavator scoop is painted in white, and the defining detail for this mode is the striping on the sides. This was difficult to mask due to all the molded details along the sides, but after a lot of back and forth of scraping and painting I got something that I'm happy with.

My favorite detail in this mode is the cab of the excavator. I got to paint in the windows, the silver trim, white for the structure as a whole, and the orange lights. It was actually the first thing I painted for this figure, back when I had just started Stinger.

Got a small update for you all today, I painted a Decepticon logo on Mixmaster's barrel!
Mix alt main1.jpg

I also took the opportunity to retake all the gallery pictures since the lighting wasn't great on the originals. Check out an all-new gallery for Mixmaster, just scroll up on this page!

To check in on progress, I got Arcee and Chromia's alt-modes gloss coated today. I've already worked quite a bit on robot mode, so those should be done soon. I'm having a harder time color-matching Elita-1, but once the other two are done I can put all of my focus on mixing the right purple.

I've also done a LOT of work on Skipjack, so I'll be uploading that not long after the Arcees.

:michaelbay: 100,000 VIEWS! :michaelbay:

I'd like to give a huge thank you to everyone who has been stopping by and checking out this page over these several months. I never really thought about 100K views when I started this page, certainly not in less than a year!

It's hard to believe that Mixmaster was uploaded for the 20K views poll - it wasn't that long ago!

With the 100K landmark fast approaching, I decided to inventory all my Studio Series figures and the progress I had made on them (complete, incomplete, not started, etc.). Here's a look at that list:
Painting progress Jan31 2021.JPG

(Yes, I can count, the screenshot just cuts off SS-74 ROTF Bumblebee xD)
To celebrate 100,000 views, I will be holding another poll for the next new project! I'll be starting this new project after I finish the Arcee sisters and Skipjack.

Anything in Yellow and Red is fair game, as well as TLK Berserker into Crankcase (Didn't include him in the list but I do consider it honorary Studio Series).

Thanks again for checking back to see my customs, and here's to 200,000!
