25: SS-52 Arcee/Chromia/Elita-1

The Arcee triplets were a very interesting set of customs - they're very small, but very detailed and were one of my more challenging projects in terms of color matching. There aren't enough attachments in a post for all three of them in one post, so I'll be splitting them into their own posts. Combined mode pics are coming in the future!

25A: Arcee

- Robot Mode -

Like I mentioned before, color matching was the main focus with these figures. As I looked through reference pictures I found that Arcee is more of a reddish-pink than the original figure is, so I mixed gloss magenta and gloss red until I found a shade that matched the film model pretty well. There's a lot of both gunmetals and silver used throughout, and some gold (I used the acrylic rather than the enamel gold for this one). I repainted the eyes in metallic blue to be more visible, painted the lips in that same pink/red, and added some of the cyberglyphs to the torso (more on those later).

Arcee bot 1.jpg

Arcee bot neutral.jpg

Arcee bot aim.jpg

- Vehicle Mode -

Vehicle mode was the more challenging of the modes for all three of these figures. In addition to the previously described color matching, there was even more detail work than robot mode. Gunmetal and silver areas, a second pair of headlights, pink for the spokes of the wheels, and cyberglyphs along the sides (as intact as I could make them with the small area of the side panels).

The cyberglyphs were a little daunting at first, but looking at the screen-used bikes the cyberglyphs look like brush marks - the lines are uneven and have rough edges. I painted over and redid one or two of them, but I'm happy with how they turned out.

25B: Chromia

- Robot Mode -

Like with Arcee, I went through a few different blue mixtures until I found one that worked for Chromia (a few more than Arcee, actually). Various gunmetals, silver, and acrylic gold were used, as with Arcee, and

Reference pictures of Chromia were the most difficult to acquire of the bunch - I found 360 degree CG renders for the top halves of both Arcee and Elita-1, but not Chromia. I had a few blurry screenshots to work with, so I'll admit there was some freestyling with Chromia's robot mode. This is most noticeable in the markings on the torso section, as I was able to figure out fairly well what the head and arms looked like.

- Vehicle Mode -

Unlike robot mode, I had a lot of really nice reference pictures for Chromia's vehicle mode. There was a lot of the darker enamel gunmetal used in large areas and for stripes, with a lot of silver for both normal detailing and the cyberglyphs. I think Chromia is my favorite of the bunch in alt mode!

25C: Elita-1

- Robot Mode -

Elita-1's purple color took the most color matching attempts to get right. I totally repainted the figure probably 4+ times before finding a mix that worked well. The final purple actually has some of the gloss magenta from Arcee mixed in to get close as I could to the actual shade.

I used white for the stripes and details, and the same gunmetals/gold as Arcee and Chromia. I also decided to paint the combined mode gun in Elita's colors since she didn't have any firepower initially.

Vehicle mode used the same purple mixture as robot mode, with white used for the cyberglyphs and other details. I also painted the single headlight instead of the two present on the original figure.

26: SS-67 Skipjack

- Robot Mode -

Skipjack's robot mode was really fun to detail! I pulled some inspiration from Rampage's CG model, but Skipjack is mostly improv work. Besides the various gunmetals and silver, I used quite a bit of copper detailing since I don't use that too often. The red and white caution striping (a small callback to the black and yellow striping I did on Scavenger) was a little difficult to line up, but I really like the variety it adds to robot mode. There's also some black with red striping on the tail/pogo stick, a detail that I made consistent with similar detailing on alt mode.

- Vehicle Mode -
For vehicle mode, I painted the sides of the scoop in gunmetal, and used a darker gunmetal for detailing in several locations. I used flat yellow to pick out the wheels, and you can see the white/red striping details from robot mode. Silver was used in several areas, and you can see a little bit of the red striping that I also added to robot mode. I Also used panel liner on the scoop to bring out more detail.

I used some of my Tamiya weathering kit to add some dirt/mud to the treads, which after flat coating came across more subtle than I was expecting. I like it though, it's there without being too distracting.

A lot of progress has been made on DOTM Megatron, looking to get some flat rust paint this upcoming Monday that'll come in very handy.

I've applied the base coat, and while the final version will have a darker base color with weathering and damage, I thought it was kinda cool to see it like this.

27: SS-34 Megatron (Dark of the Moon)

UPDATE: I spruced up my paint work on Megatron by redoing the weathering to be more consistent in robot and vehicle modes, added copper detailing, and repainted some of the wires found in robot mode. I also added a new net piece over the front (as the original did not age well), and even did some improvement with Igor including both updated paint and his cane!

DOTM Megatron is a project that, in the past, I didn't really know what to do with. I made some minor adjustments, but I never had a plan for a full custom. After Megatron won the 100K poll I had to scramble and think of how I could really do this well. Thankfully, between official HD CGI renders and Prime 1 studios' statue, I had some great reference pictures! I'm really proud of this project, and I hope you enjoy!

- Robot Mode -

While this was more of an issue in vehicle mode, the first thing I wanted to do was get rid of the original "rust" paint on the figure. For some sections I did the same light aircraft gray/mud mixture as vehicle mode, but for other parts I used silvers and various gunmetals to break up the tan sections.

While weathering was a big part of this figure, I also made sure to look for what details I could add. I found some very colorful wires in the legs from the official CG renders, some more wires on the left arm from the Prime 1 studios, and the small red bits on the torso I remembered noticing on the meet & greet Megatron costume at Universal.

Moving onto weathering, I started with some panel liner - not very much though as it started to wat away at the light aircraft gray paint I was using. I then used mud from my Tamiya weathering kit, and sponge-brushed on flat rust to make Megatron look more accurate.

I did do a small amount of modding to robot mode: to get the head sculpt more screen accurate I used an X-acto knife to add to the damage on the existing head sculpt. For example, Megatron is missing his right cheekbone piece in DOTM but the original figure included that piece, so I cut parts of it off and painted over it in gunmetal and some small bits of silver.

- Vehicle Mode -

The big challenge in vehicle mode (more so than robot mode) was getting rid of the rust fade on the sides of the truck. My first plan was to remove that fade using some kind of paint thinner, but looking at pictures of the truck and the paint I had, I found that light aircraft gray was a pretty close match! You can see how it looked with just that paint earlier on this page. I then took the mud from my weathering kit and used it on all of the surfaces I painted to darken the shade and also make it look dirtier.

I then went to work with detailing: Windows, vents, all the greebling on the side of the truck, and the red for the hazard signs, among others. I used acrylics for the forward rubber section of the truck, learning my lesson from Barricade and Soundwave.

Finally, I took flat rust and dry brushed it in some areas, then used the sponge brush technique over much of the truck, primarily on the cab and lower parts of the trailer/tanker.

There's also a small mod in this mode: I added the netting on the front of the truck that was missing on the original figure. It's actually a section from an Avocado bag that I spray painted black! (Note: this has been replaced with a more robust net piece as of January 2024)

I made sure to paint Igor as well! To start I painted over all the gray plastic with gunmetal, then repainted the green with Testor's flat green, the same paint I'll be using on Long Haul. I painted one eye in blue and one in red like in DOTM, and used gold, red, and flat gunmetal for detailing.

I also wanted to get a pic just for the fusion cannon because I really like how it turned out. I noticed the barrel end has a blue fade to it on the CGI renders, which I was able to incorporate!

Here's an update to what's going on!

First, I've started work on my next custom. Not saying who it is yet, but it is a Constructicon!

Second, I started work on some flames for DOTM Prime! I printed out a stencil of this section and used an X-acto knife to trace that design onto masking tape. Unfortunately, the masking tape didn't hold up very well during the transfer onto Prime. I worked with what I had, though, and after a lot of touching up, I have the first set of pretty good flames! I'll still be touching these up some more, but keep your eyes out for a big DOTM Prime update at some point in the future (not anytime soon).
Prime flames.jpg

Finally, I updated the galleries for ROTF Bee's robot mode and both modes for ROTF Megatron, I wanted to get some better lighting for both of them. You can find both of them back on page 2!

Thank you!

Yeah, the flames are kind of a pain. I've started work on the shoulders, and one turned out nicely while the other one didn't. If I keep working at it though, I think I can pull it off!

Also made a small update to the front page, adding a new logo and an updated spreadsheet for my progress on each of my figures.

Wanted to give you all an update since it's been a little while!

I took a brief break to work on some Star Wars projects I've wanted to tackle for a while. Here's the main ones I worked on:
TROS X-Wings.jpg

But we're here to talk about Transformers! With those X-Wings done, I got Long Haul's vehicle mode done and flat coated today. Hoping to have the robot mode done fairly soon.

I'm also working on an update for Sentinel Prime - repainting all the red in a new gloss red, adding several new details, and I'll be repainting the 316 numbering on the sides of alt mode in a more accurate size.

28: SS-42 Long Haul

- Robot Mode -

Long Haul has a lot of great sculpting in robot mode which I really enjoyed painting. I started using a base coat of Testor's graphite metallic. I ran out of my usual gunmetal when I started work on this project - I found more later, but I like how it looked so I decided to keep it. Testor's flat green is pretty much an exact color match for Long Haul's base green, so I used that on multiple areas like the areas near Long Haul's head. I used a few gunmetals, silver, gold, and copper for detailing, as well as some orange on the insides of the arm - my idea is that these are the fuel tanks for Long Haul's flamethrowers.

You'll notice the large charred-looking sections of the arm panels. These are actually details meant for vehicle mode, but I think they work well with robot mode as well, either as blast marks from the missiles or from the flamethrowers Long Haul uses in the ROTF game.

And yes, I painted the missiles. It's difficult to do so because one of the missiles is used as a tab for vehicle mode, which would chip off the paint. In an attempt to get around this, I cut the lower half of the port for the missile off so that it's now just a groove that the missile rests in. Having transformed it like this, structural integrity of the connection was not compromised but I still had some minor chipping. I'll probably work with this some more in the future.

- Vehicle Mode -

One of the most prominent details in vehicle mode are the large black smudges on the sides of the truck bed. I'm honestly not sure what they are (caused by the exhaust, maybe?), but they are present on the truck used for Long Haul in ROTF so I incorporated them.

Another detail I thought about were the black stripes on the sides on the truck bed. They add some nice detail to alt mode, but they're not actually accurate to the screen-used truck. I went back and forth on removing them, and compromised by leaving the outline of the stripes but painting the center in green.

The general weathering over the truck is something I added pretty last-minute. It felt appropriate considering Long Haul is a construction vehicle which should get pretty dirty, but I also didn't want it to overshadow my detail work. I'm pretty happy with the balance of the final product.

The detailing for this most is focused on the front, where I added the orange lights, painted the ladders, repainted the windshields, and added the black and red striping to the sides with white segments representing the CAT logos on the truck. Fun fact, the stripes on the truck in the movie are either white or silver, but I went with red to stand out more and as a reference to the concept art for Long Haul and the original ROTF voyager.

Long Haul alt main.jpg

Long Haul alt front.jpg

Long Haul alt R.jpg

- Combined Mode -

I added some detailing specifically for this mode, most notably the gunmetal in the center of the foot to make it look a little bit like the two distinct toes that Long Haul's foot mode has in the movie, rather than the solid foot of the Studio Series version. I also picked out some of the wires on the foot. Other than that, you have a better view of some of the detailing from robot mode.

Wanted to give an update for what the painting schedule is looking like:

- First up is my update for Sentinel Prime. I finished work on robot mode and gloss coated it a few days ago, but I have quite a bit of work cut out for vehicle mode - I plan on working on it more tomorrow.

- After that I think I'd like to tackle Dino. I've already got most of vehicle mode painted so I don't think it'll take too long.

- It'll be another Constructicon after Dino.

I'd really like to get Topspin done and finish the Wreckers, but I haven't found a blue base color I'm happy with yet. I'll probably stop by Hobby Lobby later this month and restock on paint, and I can look for a new blue then.

Things are really busy with the semester about to end and graduation approaching, but I'll keep working when I have some spare time!

Long Haul looks awesome! Great balance between detailing and weathering. Stellar job!
...back in my day, you had one alt-mode. ONE! Articulation? why, if you had enough articulation to transform, you had plenty. And if you wanted more articulation, you know what you did about it? NOTHING. You transformed, stood there with your faceplate closed, and your optics sharp, just like everybody else who didn't have ball-jointed this, and swivel-jointed that. And when your were told to, you transformed and rolled out! ...And another thing...

Thank you so much! I wasn't sure on the weathering for a long time, but I'm glad I added it in the end. I'm not sure how I'll handle it with the other Constructicons, though. We'll see!

Your work on Long Haul is super impressive. Did you add some weathering to the tires? Maybe it's just the lighting in the pictures, but his wheels have a sort of dirty/dusty look to them as though he just drove through a construction site. It might be my favorite detail on the figure.

Thank you very much!

I did add weathering to the tires, using my Tamiya weathering kit. After I flat coated the tires, though, the weathering was much less noticeable. I’m not quite sure why - this same thing happened to Skipjack’s treads, but not on DOTM Megatron, maybe I didn’t wait long enough after weathering to add the flat coat.

But yes! While it’s not as noticeable as I intended, I did weather them.

Oh, here’s a picture of Sentinel I took earlier today, after redoing the red and gray sections so it’s a straight line across. I’ve started working on the numbers, though that will probably take some time to finish.

We hit a pretty big milestone today - 1 year ago was the start of this customs page! To celebrate, I've got a few things for you:

First, here's a group shot of all the Studio Series I've finished painting so far!
Year 1 pic 2.jpg

Pretty crazy to see them all together like this. I did paint a few of them before I started the page, but I've updated those figures since then, so I included them!

Second, I'll be posting my update for Sentinel Prime later today! You can see him in the picture above, but it's not 100% done yet - I'll be finishing that project later today.

Finally, I've finished work on Dino! Post is coming right up after this one.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has checked out this page over the last year. I really appreciate the feedback you all have had!

29: SS-71 Dino

- Robot Mode –

One of the main things I did for both modes on Dino is repaint all of the red surfaces in a brighter, glossier red. It’s not super different from the existing red on the figure, but it adds a little something extra that I like. I’m always a little careful around brushing large sections of a figure, but the red was thin enough that the paint would level itself out and not show the brush marks.

After painting the red, I went in and added the usual gunmetal paint – although I used more of the darker enamel gunmetal for this one, since I liked how it contrasted more with the red. On the blades, I used the lighter acrylic gunmetal for the inner supports and the darker gunmetal for the outer portion. After adding gunmetal to the head, I repainted some areas in red, like the thin lines around his eyes.

I had some great reference for painting – not only are there nice ILM renders, but Matrix Studio made an incredibly detailed Dino statue that really helped with figuring out my plan for robot mode. I used silver for the headlights on the chest and on the legs, specifically around the knees. There’s some copper details on his legs that I found thanks to that Matrix Studio statue, and I used gold in several locations, like on the blades and chest.

The last detail I added was the silver lining around the chest panels. I really, really like how that looks, and it really ties the figure together for me.

-Vehicle Mode –

While Dino isn’t a licensed Ferrari, I made some paint apps aimed at making it a little closer to the real-world alt mode. I added faux-rrari logos on the hood and sides and painted the red section on the rear windshield in black to match the window. The biggest change (and one that I went back and forth on doing) was making the headlights longer to better resemble the Ferrari. I liked how it looked in alt mode, but it does infringe on the robot mode look a little bit. I ultimately decided to keep it!

As with robot mode I repainted the entire car in gloss red. I also added gunmetal to the bottom of the doors and to the grill matching the actual car. I finished with the rear of the car, painting new headlights, the exhaust pipes, and the license plate.

Got an update for what’s next!

First is an update for Scrapmetal. I’d like to have it done within the next day or so but it depends on if I can get the parts back from these guys or not!

After that is another deluxe Decepticon from ROTF!

EDIT: As it turns out I'm out of flat coat, so Scrapmetal is delayed until this weekend (If I can get the flat coat within the next few days), and I'll be finishing ROTF Soundwave soon instead!

30: SS-62 Soundwave (Revenge of The Fallen/ DOTM Video Game)

- Robot Mode -

There's a lot of takes on ROTF Soundwave's color scheme, from the film itself to concept art to the various repaints of the original ROTF deluxe. For my custom, however, I used Soundwave's appearance at the beginning of the DOTM video game as the primary reference. Soundwave sports a darker color scheme (probably mostly due to the lighting) and red glowing sections instead of the blue seen on other versions.

I started with a base coat of silver and went to work using two different gunmetals, graphite metallic, and more silver to try and get close to the version from the game. I did use some gold on the figure, but I scaled it back over time to make it look less like Soundblaster. I decided to go with weathering on this one (it feels appropriate for hanging out in orbit with lots of debris going by), and used both panel liner and dry brushing (silver and gunmetal) to accomplish that.

SW Bot walking.jpg

SW Bot Lazerbeak new.jpg

SW Comparison.jpg

- Satellite Mode -

Soundwave doesn't have a lot of parts that are reserved strictly for one mode, so the writeup for Robot mode applies here again. I used metallic graphite paint for the innermost portions of the solar panels, and red for some of the sections that glow red on the game model. The metallic blue on the cylinders near the chest were a late addition, it took me a few times watching his few moments of screen time (in satellite mode) in the game to notice them.

I know it’s been set as “in progress” for a while now, but Topspin is coming up next! Here’s a preliminary look at how that’s going:

I’m also 3D printing new weapons for Sentinel Prime. The shield turned out great but I’m having issues with the swords. Once they’re all done I’ll have some pics here!
