G1 aviation-style back tattoo design. I'd like your input!

Got a great pic of G1 Op or BW Megs? Whether it's 2-D or 3-D it's welcome as is any other form of art outside the custom figure world.

G1 aviation-style back tattoo design. I'd like your input!

As the title implies, I’m planning to get my back tattooed at the end of February. I know a well known tattoo artist that travels across the state twice a year who is willing to give me a day rate. His eye for drawing machines is fantastic, so I wanted to get something big done! =D

I decided to create a flier-style G1 design for my back. I wanted it to be blocky but also detailed to show aviation characteristics/qualities, so I created a 3-tiered design: the wing blades popping out at a 3D angle on the outside, the ventilation/armor just underneath (with just enough shading to show depth), and the nose with a sort of glass design at the bottom. I’ve thought about having more above the design, but I can’t decide quite what yet (either more of the nose to show more that it’s underneath the rest and to help pop the rest out or more armor without the vents...went a little crazy with the vents  ).

It’s still in its final rough sketch phase for a reason. I wanted to ask my fellow Transformers fans for their thoughts:

- Do you feel it’s too detailed for a G1 style (such as with the hinges or spine popping out)?
- Do you feel I should take the vents out and replace them with patterns or painted designs instead (giving the model a more blocky feel)?
- What colors do you think would fit well?
- If you could think of something to put above it, what would it be?
- **insert thought here**

A lot of the minor differences in spacing between the sides will be patched up once it’s inked (lines will be straighter/more clear for example), but what design differences would you make? I’m, by no means, the best artist or visionary for original designs... I feel that having the input of others within the fan base will make the design more special and the experience more fun overall. =)

Also...I’m recently coming back to the site after being away for about 6 years, so there aren’t many people I recognize anymore. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! :-)

edit: I forgot to mention. It started out without nearly as much detail. Standard flat-long surfaces. It looked a lot more traditional. I added the details as ideas but fully expect to revise it several more times before it's completed.

Imho I think it looks more like a jetpack, and TF Prime style more than G1. Again, that's just my opinion. The drawing itself is good. Just seems odd to me. There is definitely enough detail....maybe even too much detail. If you want this design and you love it though, that's what ultimately matters. You do you, not what others think. :)

This design was overhauled a long time ago  I just never updated the thread since it never got any responses.

I'll likely post a picture of the finished design before I get it done, but it definitely looks more G1 now. There was a lot wrong with this one that I knew was going to get changed. More or less, it was just a chimera of possible ideas.

G1 back tattoo design overhaul and current picture

Here is the design I've been working on currently. Have been working with a friend for the past few months, coming up with ideas and creating a lot of possibilities. Decided to move towards what works and ended up coming up with this.

So, I have one sleeve started as a Decepticon sleeve, and I have plans to make the other an Autobot sleeve. This meant that if I wanted my back to compliment this theme, I would need to either make it neutral, of a different faction, or divide it. Of all the designs I've put together, I like this one the most so far.

Image

Divebomb's back would be on the 'Con sleeve side and represent :PREDACON: s and a G1 style of art. Beast era Skywarp's back would be on the Autobot sleeve side and represent :MAXIMAL: s and the technorganic style of art from those timelines.

There is still a lot of detail to put in on both sides, and it's still uninked. Since it was brought up recently in Va'al's post for creativity in Transtopia for 2017 (was very surprising to see it there, btw, and thank you for thinking of it XD), I thought maybe I should show how (utterly and completely) different the design is now. It's been revamped a lot

If you have any thoughts or suggestions, I'd still be more than happy to know them :D Will likely post a picture once the design is finished being detailed.

Partially inked now :D

Looking forward to detailing the other side. A few alterations to make, but the Maximal side is pretty much completed.

This is as inked as it's going to get

The artist is working with me on the rest to add details to the Divebomb/Predacon side. I know what details I want for it, but I didn't add them in the sketch due to time restraints. Essentially, I want it to look like my back opens up, much like a Transformer's might. I'll likely ink the rest of it for fun another time. XD

03/01/18 is the appointment  I'm eating all the spinach I can find, cutting out all caffeine, and getting ready for quite the painful experience!
