G1 Ultra magnus: former decepticon?

I noticed when I was a kid watching transformers(G1) that all autobots had blue eyes and decepticons had mostly red eyes with the exception of a few with yellow eyes.

With this in mind, I have to ask the question, What's up with ultra Magnus' white robot mode? Was he at one time a decepticon? Did the trailer armor turn him into an autobot? I'm wondering if this is the reason why we never saw the white robot mode in the cartoon.

Anybody have any info on this?

Never mentioned, alluded to, or hinted at. Magnus' inner robot never even appears in the cartoon proper, but if it did I would assume he would have been given blue eyes, much like Grimlock, whose toy also had red eyes.

The red and blue eyes seems to be cartoon only. The toys had no such patterns.
I always used to put red and blue clay on my TFs eyes. Is that weird?

Exactamundo. The toys has eyes of various colors, but in the cartoon (bar a few exceptions) Autobots had blue and Decepticons had red. The change is merely stylistic, but it did serve to keep both groups distinct

It would be an interesting concept, but no.

It's not like White Prime has red eyes before, right?

1st, I think it was awesome of DW to bring him out the way they did in that storyline.

2nd, I always thought that for as loyal and good as he was, in the cartoon he was a stiff ass who couldn't carry the ball when it was handed to him.

3rd, really to answer the OP, no, I never thought he was a Con, even with the eyes. it's just a minor paint app mistake. happened to a few of them.

Paint app mistake nothing, all the toys with painted heads had red eyes.

I think it's quite possible Ultra Magnus was at one time a Decepticon. At one time wasn't Jetfire? Wasn't Starscream a scientist before the great war?

It is possible but highly unlikely, and never even hinted at in anything Magnus has appeared in.

IHide wrote:At one time wasn't Jetfire? Wasn't Starscream a scientist before the great war?

Yes and no. Jetfire and Starscream were both scientists, but Jetfire crashed on Earth before the war. When he was unfrozen, he had no idea what a Decepticon was, and joined with them just because that's the side Starscream was on. He switched over to the Autobots when he realized the Decepticons were evil.

That's what I was stopping in again to say. Perhaps Magnus' super devotion to law enforcement (IDW Magnus at least) is a response to former law breaking ways of his own. I'm not inclined to believe that only Drift is able to make use of that faction switching trick, going from killer to hero, so I guess it could be possible that Magnus at some point was a bad guy. I'd picture him as like a mob enforcer or something along those lines, some kind of toughbot who (still) never let himself take anything lightly.

Side Question: which G1 tfs would likely have started their careers in another faction? For example, Scourge in The Hardest Burden to Bear was able to use the Matrix (albeit unhealthfully), so I wonder he started life as an Autobot. I know int he cartoon, the Construction were orginally good guys, if not ethnic Autobots.

Scourge started life as either a seeker or an Insecticon. :P Can't remember which. Not sure why he was able to manipualte the Matrix, especially since he was infused with Unicron's life energy. Same happened to megatron, and Galvatron was unable to use the Matrix.

Well, in one of their origin stories that's true. But I agree with the idea behind what you're saying. Cybertronians are millions of years old, and the idea that they would somehow never fluctuate in their ideas or beliefs is terribly unlikely in my mind.

Understood, my point was things can change, allegiances change. My G1 knowledge is a little hazy, but unless I'm mistaken, Magnus' past isn't revealed in any of the shows. Although I personally don't believe he was once a Decepticon, I just think that it's possible.

I'm with you. I like the idea that despite their age Cybertronians are capable of chaning their minds as the centuries roll on. They are sentient afterall, and so they may be programed (for lack of a better word) with a function (like how Ratchet is a medic) but not necessarily programmed to follow any particular set of unchanging, linear allegiance. I think a sort of appropriate G1 example would be Mirage or Thundercracker, who are both to varying degrees not at home with their faction ideology. They are fairly middle of the road kind of guys though; I strongly doubt you'd ever see the real wild, bloodthirsty Decepticons going over, or some one like Beachcomber going to the Decepticon side.

i couldn't disagree with you more, sometimes the most hardened of enemies can become a friend under the right circumstances. Look at dinobot in beast wars, he believed in the predacon cause of throwing off the maximal yoke, his concept of honour, and in his own right to rise to the top. yet he still joined the maximals, it may have been to further his own cause but he still did it.

I'll throw a (very non-canonical, just my own wannabe fan fiction opinion) monkey wrench at you, Rodimus. You completely right we first saw Scourge as a either a Seeker or Insecticon (I completely blanked on this too after two weeks from seeing the G1 Movie), but was Scourge (or his predecessor) always a Decepticon? I can imagine in a G1 prequel that one of Insecticons or even Seekers might be originally an ethnic Autobot, but somewhere down line he was rebuilt (ala Orion Pax, but more grim way) into a machine more like an ethnic Decepticon. Of course, this traitor Autobot might be a willing convert to Megatron's ways or had its personally altered via the Robosmasher. Heck, if Scourge was originally Thundercracker, it might be a more viable option.

Ultra Magnus, I don't know too much about him, besides the fact that he was "temporary leader" of the Autobots in the 1986 Movie. I don't know the reason behind his red eyes for his white form. But the G1 version of him looks very nice. All I know about Former Decepticon/Autobot is Jetfire from Movieverse in "Revenge of the Fallen" and Sentinel Prime also from Movieverse in "Dark of the Moon"

Sentinel's death was VERY reasonable, I was glad he died. Ironhide will be forever missed.
