Jonboy Meyers has been doing the IDW Marvel reprint covers after they used the Campbell covers. I really dig his stuff. I saw him at Long Beach Comic Con yesterday and got this awesome Storm Shadow sketch!

As a kid, I’ve always loved “The Viper is Coming.” It’s the one where someone calls Barbeque’s home and announces “This is the Viper” which sounds ominous and threatening. GI Joe preemptively attacks Cobra around the world but doesn’t find “The Viper.” It turns out to be a misunderstanding, The Viper is really the Window Wiper.

Image

Image

I thought it was hilarious as a kid and still thought it was pretty clever when I rewatched it in the recent boxset.

Image

Today, I noticed one of my students reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I remember these books as a kid as well. The student was reading a short story called “The Viper” in the book. When I glanced over, imagine my surprise that it’s essentially the same story as the GI Joe episode!

It’s a very brief one page story. The line “This is the Viper” and the punchline is the same. I don’t remember reading “The Viper” when I was younger. Then again, I don’t remember about these scary anthologies other than their gruesome pictures.

Image

The copyright in the book is from 1981 while the GI Joe episode broadcasted in 1985. I’m not accusing the GI Joe writer David Bennett Carren of swiping to cause a ruckus. Plus I'm sure most of the cartoons I loved as a kid were inspired by something else. I just think it’s fascinating that two things I enjoyed as a kid had something in common!

Interesting, There has to be a connection somehow to the short story and cartoon.

I posted this on another board. Apparently it's an old joke. Going back further, the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark source section the story is attributed to a Philadelphia teenager in 1980, and gives mention to another version in book published in the '70s.

I know this wasn't GI Joe's finest moment but I couldn't resist buying these. I really dug those episodes as a kid.

Damn you, Hasbro! They must know I can't resist mystery bags. Especially super deformed characters.

Image

Image

And the figures that were inside? Ghost Ninja Henchmen and Steel Brigade.

Image

I've always wanted to sign up for the Steel Brigade figure as a kid but never did. I thought the Ghost Ninja figure was peculiar because I've never heard of the character. A quick Google search later and I learned it was a GI Joe unproduced figure. In fact, I didn't realize Hasbro showed several unproduced figures last summer such as a line of ninjas and a line of zombie figures. Pretty interesting.

Like markings on the packaging to tell you which ones you are getting before opening the package?

I looked at the bag. No obvious sign yet.

I watched Operation Dragonfire. I haven't seen that since I was a kid. I was surprised how well that mini-series was produced. The animation quality is pretty good. And I was also shocked that it used a lot of the Sunbow music cues.

Then I watched the first episode of DIC Season 1... the animation quality takes a big dip. Yes, it's more slapstick compared to the Sunbow series but I'm enjoying it.

(And yes, I'm aware the original GI Joe series has it's silly moments like Red Rocket Burgers and Cold Slither :) )

Ah, there are different Micro Force packaging with more figures inside. This looks randomly packed but at least you can see which ones you're getting. This has Zombie Cobra Commander!

At WonderCon, I was flipping through original art and came across a page from GI Joe #109 by John Statema. It's the page where Tomax and Xamot misunderstand Cobra Commander's order resulting in GI Joe executions.

It was relatively affordable and I picked it up!

I forgot to post this after WonderCon.

There was a booth with boxed GI Joe vehicles. It was an incredible display because they had the Defiant ($3000), Mobile Command Center, and the USS Flagg ($7500).

It turns out it was for a reality show about a toy dealer. I didn't realize it until I was staring at the boxes and they were filming me. It was pretty funny.

Then last weekend, I saw this USS Flagg for sale at a toy show. It looks like it's seen better days.

You really don't realize just how big those boxes are until you see them in person, even posed images with something for scale don't do it justice.

I'm a sucker for mystery boxes/bags as I've posted before. I saw these GI Joe figures by Loyal Subjects. They sort of look like those Mighty Muggs from a few years go.

Image

I could not resist and bought one on a lark. I was about to walk away. The clerk is a big Joe fan and asked me to open it in the store. I opened it and immediately recognized the Cobra Commander's gun, so I was pleased to get a popular character.

I opened the sealed bag inside and was surprised to find a hooded Cobra Commander. The clerk freaked out because it's the rarest figure offered in the line.

Quite a cool line of collectibles!

I looked all over the box. No indication or markings on what figure is inside.

I just bought Michael Golden's GI Joe Yearbook Artist Edition Portfolio from IDW. For the uninitiated, IDW has a line of books called Artist Edition, which reproduces comic artists original art for a specific artist's, generally collecting six stories. For example, there was a John Romita Spider-Man Artist Edition.

The portfolio line isn't a book but collects a original art from a single story in a hardbound folder.

It's fantastic looking!

According to Scott Dunbier at WonderCon, the person that bought the entire original pages had them restored. The wordballoons were originally pasted onto the pages but were removed and placed on an acetate overlay so you can see it lettered and unlettered. For the portfolio, one side is lettered and the other side of the page is not. It's pretty neat!
