For the record, Gatchaman/Battle of The Planets was the originator of the Sentai genre(1972 :shock:

). It could even be argued God Phoenix was a mech, although it didn't have a bot mode.

It was safe till the contract was up. It wasn't yanked as soon as Disney took control.

Money talks. Increasing the exposure of all Power Ranger media would be an immediate goal. Whether Hasbro owns IDW or not is largely irrelevant, they already have a solid business relationship and IDW publishing is a higher profile platform than Boom.

I don't know if still think the license is safe till at least the end of the contract. Besides maybe idw don't want power rangers at the moment, especially with the upcoming transformers reboot, they've only just acquired sonic the hedgehog, we don't know how much that cost them.

I think he's aiming for the "Hasbro possibly buying Boom!" approach. In that case, not gonna happen. Once IDW's and Boom!'s licenses are due for renewal, things may get hectic... a little bit. Who'll be Hasbro's favourite?

I've long held the belief that if Disney really wanted a toy company then they'd just make their own. They already have all of the most popular IPs so it wouldn't be that hard for them to slowly build up a company of their own as Hasbro's licenses expire and new IPs are made rather than spending a billion dollars on an existing one. Instead they've found it to be much easier to let other companies do the heavy work while they collect the license fees and free advertising just like they do with video games.

The money is all in IP Ownership, hence why Hasbro has been going more and more into that and beefing up their own brands.

Absolutely, and this is a hard lesson that a lot of smaller toy companies eventually learn. They go license crazy and shoot for the moon, but it only takes one failure or one under performing line when you're starting out and you quickly find yourself in debt to the license holders. I'd seen this happen way too many times in the '90s and early 2000s. Done right and you have a company like McFarland which made money off of their own IP first before branching out. Done wrong and you've got Palisades which crashed quickly after 11 years thanks to only two real failures: retailers didn't want their Muppet/Sesame Street figures despite a huge amount of fan interest (this was going to be their new flagship toy line), and their failed attempt to reproduce vintage Micronauts toys that were riddled with QC issues. The Micronauts line was an especially bad idea because while they had the rights to make them, Takara wouldn't help them with the molds so they had to make their own molds out of donated and sourced vintage figures turning the line into a massive money sinkhole that they couldn't profit off of when word got out that they were garbage. Had they aborted early enough they might have survived, but their over confidence got the best of them.

So yeah, better to build a strong set of good IPs and not license too much because it really doesn't take much for it all to fall apart quickly.

Another one that immediately comes to mind is October Toys acquiring the license to Skeleton Warriors. Which ended with less than five figures.

Hasbro revealed their first power rangers toy and toyline today. It is essentialy Power Rangers black series with unmasked alternate heads for each ranger. 20$ at retail, out in 2019

That does look very nice, and it will be nice to see if they do combinable weapons for the teams that had them. Though I do want to see what they'll do for the zords.

That figure looks very promising. I really like that they made the costume look like cloth rather than painted on like most versions.

Also this video is a great look at Hasbro's digital sculpting in action.

EDIT: First look at Beast Morphers TV show. I can definitely see why Hasbro is starting with this one. I'll be shocked if they don't make transforming Rangers for this line.

Let's not forget Monsters. I wouldn't mind seeing a new Goldar with proper paint aps, sword, and removable wings.

always bugged me as a kid that the biggest monsters they did were scaled to the big ranger figures yet were smaller then the zords so it was never a fair fight.

They're just quoting Saban's PR from before Hasbro acquired it. I doubt anything has changed in the actual show so it's probably fine. The video basically says the same thing as the release does.

I remember that as well. But never let the size difference stop the monsters from putting up a fight.

Let's not forget about Scorpina either. They could easily do her monster form and sell that over the human-faced one. And hopefully we can get Rita this time.

Edit: I am also going to go out on a limb and call it that the second figure will be Green Ranger Tommy that will include the Dragon Dagger/Flute and Sword of Darkness. Jason will be #3.

They fixed that recently by making zord action figures that are the same size as the monsters (and same size as the rangers). And in any case, its not like the current big zords can articulate at all so making them both action figures helps you have a cool fight scene.

The deluxe toys were the bees knees and i just wanted monsters to match, still feel though that they could do with the option for both. More options is never a bad thing ;-)

The normal sized action figures is something I'm quite happy with, despite the size reductions but that's normal with this market over the years. It's funny seeing the blue ranger from jungle fury tower over his ninja steel counterpart.

When I was a kid Power Rangers weren't a thing yet (that was my teen years), but we had the same problem with Voltron and the only robeasts being tiny 3 3/4" figures. But when I was a kid we had these:

Inhumanoids monsters were massive at the time and a lot of fun to use for fighting big robots with. I still have Tendril (the green one) somewhere in storage and he is such a great figure. And hey, he has light piping if that's your thing.

Found a pic of him with some common smaller figures for scale.

Unfortunately the aftermarket price on these are pretty crazy. It's too bad that one of those companies that make the big hard plastic dinosaurs and sometimes dragons you find at Walmart in the car aisle (for some unexplained reason) doesn't make big generic monsters to fill that need.
