Hasbro Reports 10% Gain in Third-Quarter Profits & Active Discussions with Paramount for 4th Movie

According to the Hollywood Reporter Hasbro is reporting a 10% increase in third-quarter profits with the Transformers brand being "a major contributor" to that growth. That in itself is great news, but there's more! During a conference call on Monday Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner stated they are in active discussions with Paramount, director Michael Bay, and Steven Spielberg for a possible fourth Transformers film! Goldner went on to state he hopes to have more news to share in the next quarter.

Additionally, Seeking Alpha has posted a complete transcript of the conference call which can be viewed by clicking here.

With respect to TRANSFORMERS, we currently believe full year revenue for the brand will be between the levels reported during the past 2 movie years, specifically between the $482 million we reported in 2007 and $592 million reported in 2009. This is in line with our original 2011 plans. And despite beginning the year with carryforward inventory, TRANSFORMERS has been a major contributor to our revenue growth during the year, posting strong shipments and point-of-sale gains versus last year, with the year-over-year point-of-sale trends improving since the movie launch.

Given this was the third movie that focus on the same core cast of characters, we did not have the same collector pounce at product launch that we had in past years. However, the broad global consumer base has responded to the movie and trends have improved. In several markets, including several mature markets, TRANSFORMERS shipments year-to-date are up in the triple digits year-over-year, and point-of-sale in many countries during0 the third quarter was also up greater than 100%. On September 30, the Blu-Ray DVD was released, which helps to continue the momentum in the brand and serves as another opportunity to engage with our TRANSFORMERS consumers.

Margaret B. Whitfield - Sterne Agee & Leach Inc., Research Division

Okay. And TRANSFORMER 4, any news on when that might occur, given the strong box office for the third movie? And any other comments on what might be out in 2013, apart from, I guess, the Marvel announcements?

Brian D. Goldner

Yes. We do have a couple of movies from Marvel that have already been announced in Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. As you imagine, with the success of a franchise like TRANSFORMERS, we're in active discussions with our great partners at Paramount with Michael Bay, with Steven Spielberg and our writer to talk about what's next on TRANSFORMERS. And hopefully, I'll have some more news to share with you in the next quarter.

Does any of this surprise anyone? Not really. Too much money on the table. 3 films, total cost of $550 million, total gross of over $3 BILLION. And people complain about corporate profits? LOL That is a 500% profit.

Great! So, does this increased profit margin mean they're gonna release Windcharger in the US now?

one question: how are they gonna do a 4th movie when Bay killed off the entire decepticon chain of command?

Regardless of the Bay hate we will hear, I am happy, its the scourge of movies to have directors or talent change for sequels.

Hasbro making profit is good for us, especially in a down market, it will give them more faith in releasing more product. Hasbro has invested alot to span out, glad to see it paying off.

Another movie? I'm glad actually, that will net more money for Hasbro, which in turn will mean that we will be getting more TFs out of it. Sure most of the movie line isn't stuff I collect, but I'm more than happy to pick up the other lines that are indirectly created through this money.

How about just creating a new character?
One that actually does some damage and lives through the movie.

My guess is Thunderwing, then Unicron for a 5th movie. It would be cool if some of the '86 movie characters showed up as well (rodimus, magnus, blurr etc)

Yeah, that would probably be in their best interests. While I'd really like a fourth film, taking a three or four year hiatus before making another film, or starting a second trilogy for that matter, would probably be for the better. There can be such a thing as too much Transformers, and if we get too many movies back to back, there's a chance the public at large could get sick of them and it won't just be the critics who are tired of these giant robot films.

I was hoping for a while that an inevitable fourth film will have a distinct lack of Michael Bay, but judging by this article, it looks like that probably won't be happening...

and if they were to release all those figures that we never got last year theyd see an even bigger increase. Why do they have to talk to bay, we dont want him & he said he didnt want to do a 4th movie. Let Spielberg do it, let him have full control over it so we can finally get something new and possible passable as transformers.

Saying "we don't want him" is a bit of an over exaggeration really. There are plenty of people who appreciate Bay's involvement, such as myself, for better or for worse.

Also, remember that Spielberg was the one who wanted to make it about "a boy and his car", so essentially it was his choice to give the robots less screentime. Technically, no Spielberg = more transformers = less Sam Witwicky = less Bumblebee toys! Hurrah!

Really though, Hasbro need to give us a break, literally. It's way too early for speak about a fourth film, and I can't imagine myself being bothered to collect the toys if it comes out too soon.

Not everyones dead. There's still Thundercracker, Flatline, and any of the Cons that survived Rising Storm like Bludgeon, Mindwipe, and others(if the directors + screenwriters would bother to do some research)

For personal reasons I hope Shia stays away, but professionally if he does a fourth, he will be the Transformers kid for life.

Bay is the only one who can bring the show to life, but if you guys want more robots and story, you need to axe Speilberg. The guy hasn't made a honest to god good movie since Saving Private Ryan back in the 90's. He like George Lucas are just Hollywood Dinosaurs.

If Michael Bay and Steven Spielburg don't do it, Hasbro will find someone to do a fourth movie. They're too used to these profits by now that they want to keep it consistent. However, very few film sagas find treasure in a fourth installment, let alone a third. Shrek was a fun series through the second film but I felt the third plummeted. Indiana Jones was strongest in the first and third in my opinion, and the other two weren't worth much. Star Wars at least has four good ones but I was not a big fan of episodes II and III.
I dunno...I'm just not so sure about more movies at this point even though I've absolutely loved all three so far. I'm just afraid it's going to lose it's magic.
