Hasbro has released their Second Quarter financial report for 2012, and overall profits are down compared to this time last year. The Boys category was down 16% with "expected" declines in Transformers and Beyblade. The Preschool category saw a 6% increase with the help of Transformers: Rescue Bots. Second Quarter Results Consistent with Company Strategy to Shift U.S. Shipments Later in the Year


  • Net revenues of $811.5 million for the second quarter 2012 versus $908.5 million for the second quarter 2011; Second quarter net revenues declined 7% excluding a negative $34.4 million impact of foreign exchange;
  • Net earnings of $43.4 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, compared to net earnings of $46.0 million or $0.33 per diluted share in 2011 (excluding a favorable tax adjustment and costs associated with establishing Hasbro's Gaming Center of Excellence); Second quarter 2011 net earnings were $58.1 million, or $0.42 per diluted share as reported;
  • Operating profit at 10.6% of revenues versus 10.3% in 2011 (excluding the Gaming Center of Excellence costs) or 8.9% as reported a year ago;
  • Second quarter 2012 operating profit increased in the U.S. and Canada and Entertainment and Licensing segments.

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) today reported financial results for the second quarter 2012. Net revenues for the quarter were $811.5 million, a decrease of 11%, compared to $908.5 million in 2011. Second quarter 2012 net revenues declined 7% excluding a negative $34.4 million impact of foreign exchange. Net earnings for the second quarter 2012 were $43.4 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, versus $58.1 million, or $0.42 per diluted share, in 2011. Second quarter 2011 net earnings include a favorable tax adjustment of $20.5 million, or $0.15 per diluted share, and pre-tax expense of $13.1 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, related to costs associated with establishing Hasbro's Gaming Center of Excellence. Absent these items, second quarter 2011 net earnings were $46.0 million or $0.33 per share.

"2012 continues to develop in line with our expectations as we shift more of our shipments later in the year while improving profitability in the near term," said Brian Goldner, President and Chief Executive Officer. "In the U.S. and Canada, we have gained share and the teams are focused on returning to historical levels of operating profit as well as partnering with U.S. retailers to shift shipments closer to the peak consumer demand periods in the third and fourth quarters. Internationally, we continue our global expansion, leveraging investments in emerging markets, product innovation and entertainment to drive Hasbro brands globally. Finally, our television strategy is delivering growth within our Entertainment and Licensing segment and creating demand for our toys and games in global markets."

"As we enter the second half of the year, we have innovative brand initiatives across product categories and geographies," continued Goldner. "For the full year 2012, we continue to believe, absent the impact of foreign exchange, we will again grow revenues and earnings per share. As we have previously stated, we expect 2-4% more of our full-year revenues to occur in the second half of the year. Within this revenue shift, we also expect the fourth quarter to be greater than the third quarter in both revenues and earnings per share, similar to our historical international results."

In the second quarter, this segment's profitability, and Hasbro's overall profitability, improved through favorable product mix and higher quality inventory in the U.S. and Canada segment versus last year," said Deborah Thomas, Chief Financial Officer. "As we enter the second half of 2012, Hasbro is in a strong financial position with healthy cash flow and great initiatives for the holidays. A year ago, we made an investment in Games, establishing Hasbro's Gaming Center of Excellence. U.S. and Canada segment net revenues were $406.6 million, a decrease of 19%, compared to $505.0 million in 2011. The results reflect growth in the Preschool category offset by declines in the Boys, Girls and Games categories. The U.S. and Canada segment reported an operating profit of $60.9 million, up 6%, compared to $57.7 million in 2011.

Net revenues in the International segment grew 5% absent the negative $33.4 million impact of foreign exchange. Including the impact of foreign exchange, International segment net revenues were $360.5 million, down 4%, compared to $374.5 million in 2011. Revenue in the International segment reflects growth in Latin America offset by a decline in Europe and Asia Pacific. Additionally, the Preschool category contributed to growth, offset by declines in the Boys, Girls and Games categories. The International segment reported an operating profit of $29.9 million, compared to $33.8 million in 2011.

Entertainment and Licensing segment net revenues increased 59% to $43.2 million, compared to $27.2 million in 2011. The segment benefited from the sale of television content in all formats in the U.S. and internationally. The Entertainment and Licensing segment reported an operating profit of $8.2 million compared to $0.6 million in 2011.

For the second quarter 2012, net revenues in the Boys category decreased 16% to $389.1 million despite strong growth in MARVEL products which partially offset expected declines in TRANSFORMERS and BEYBLADE products.

Net revenues in the Games category declined 8% to $213.8 million with MAGIC: THE GATHERING, DUEL MASTERS and BATTLESHIP brands continuing to grow. Boys Action Gaming, including the STAR WARS FIGHTER PODS, TRANSFORMERS BOT SHOTS and the introduction of the MARVEL BONKAZONKS line, continued to perform well.

In the Girls Category, net revenues declined 13%. MY LITTLE PONY products continued to grow backed by television programming globally. In the second half 2012, new Girls initiatives include the launch of FURBY, 1D, the boy band product line, as well as feature holiday items including BABY BUTTERSCOTCH from FURREAL FRIENDS; BABY WANNA WALK from BABY ALIVE and television animation for LITTLEST PET SHOP products.

Net revenues in the Preschool category increased 6% to $103.4 million backed by continued growth in the PLAYSKOOL HEROES line, including MARVEL and TRANSFORMERS RESCUE BOTS products, as well as SESAME STREET products and initial shipments of the new KOOSH line.

Share Repurchase and Dividend

The Company repurchased a total of 139,734 shares of common stock during the second quarter 2012 at a total cost of $4.9 million and an average price of $35.21 per share. At quarter-end, $217.3 million remained available in the current share repurchase authorization. The Company paid $46.7 million in cash dividends to shareholders during the quarter.

For all the people who are going to hate and say that they make crappy toys, that is not the case. They were still coming off the popularity of the last movie. Transformers is still extremely popular and is doing very well. It is actually at an expected level right now and popularity will go up again later this year, especially if Wal-Mart does their seasonal price drops again...
I am looking for a set of Botcon 2012 Junkions at a decent price...

profits on transformes are down really? could it possibly be because people refuse to pay the ridiculous prices stores are charging for them? Hopefully they'll continue to lose money on them and realize they cant charge that much for kids toys especially when the economy is in the shitter. If the toys were actually worth the money then maybe more people would buy them but they're just better off reducing the prices back to the normal ones that we use to pay. Im pretty sure if deluxes went back to $9.99 they'd fly off the shelves, well pegs to be accurate.

And you shouldnt blame hasbro as much we can blame ourselves buying 3rd party products. Which does destroy hasbro profit margin

Hasbro: "Boy" product sales in general went down a bit, but that's totally normal.
Fans: ANGRY ALL-CAPS RANT ABOUT HOW THEY'RE UNHAPPY WITH TRANSFORMERS SPECIFICALLY!


If anything I'd imagine GI Joe would be a major contributor to decline of boy toy sales, what with the movie being pushed back and supposed calling back all the toys.

I think the price point would be a minor factor as opposed to there not being much of an outlet at the moment for them to get the TF story out there.

The "expected decline in Transformers sales" comment will be based on the fact that without riding the success of the movies, sales will go down.

People can speculate all they want about other reasons, but that will be the primary reason.

And take this from someone who's worked in accountancy and marketing for 15 years.

indeed, and if you look at hasbro's current 5 year plan. (we are in year 2) they are about right where they thought they would be, which is okay news.

On one hand, at least they apparently have a plan that includes dips in success unlike other companies that unrealistically expect to have more and more profits every single quarter.

On the other, as far as TF goes, I haven't been able to find anything I've wanted to get on shelf in months. I took a picture recently of, literally, 23 Bumblebees and Cliffjumpers sitting on shelf. Nothing else. No one else I know can find what they want, no matter how many stores they've been checking. So, they aren't getting my money despite the fact that I'd like to give it to them.

Would explain why hasbro would want bay to direct another movie. and the price is fine with me, but was isnt ok is that i cant even find arcee or the vehicon where i am. But i can find the weaponizers.

My closest target had the same six powerizer optimus primes for like four months now.

I don't think we can really blame Hasbro for how retailers distribute their stock.

Hasbro obviously do their wave assortments based on some research though, and that we can blame them for.

Yes, it's a lot of things. But, making fans feel alienated...no pun intended...by canceling toys, making toys smaller and not making the stuff people really want like jetwing Prime available. You will, YOU WILL drive many fans away. Because of prices and cancellations and having to import the cool figures, I've stopped buying transformers. And when I hear people say, "good more for us"...makes me wonder why all the shelves are still stuffed with transformers! I've had some stock in Hasbro for years now and they have NEVER made me money.

Well if hasbro makes and packs more bumblebee in any deluxe shipment then they do have something to do with it.

A store isnt gonna know which tf character to put out.they just put out what ever they get

Hasbro obviously do their wave assortments based on some research though, and that we can blame them for.

A few points, some of which might help answer people's questions.

1. Inventory and store ordering: According to what I've heard from employees at the big box retailers--Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and Target--the individual stores do not order their inventory. The corporate office does, and the store just gets to sort out what's shipped--they have no idea exactly what's coming to them until it gets there. Being a step further removed from the sales, the corporate people are not likely to have as good a sense of what people are interested in, and the top-down approach is not conducive to learning.

2. Hasbro makes its money when the stores buy toys from them, not when you buy the toys from the stores. So even if a toy is a shelfwarmer, they've already collected the dough, and it will be at least several months before the retail sales cycle is complete and they hear how badly it bombed, if they ever do.

3. While you might presume Hasbro does market research to find out what's popular, I've seen plenty of big financial decisions based on nothing more than a gut feeling or anecdotal evidence at best. People in those positions are no different than anyone else--for every genius idea, there are hundreds of failures. For better or worse, I have yet to see marketing that's based on anything that could be called scientific.

4. Turning back to Hasbro's earnings statement, the most positive thing I see is the growth of the entertainment and licensing segment. The world's richest investor said a couple years ago that the best sort of business is one that has no inventory and simply collects royalties. Licensing is that kind of business. It's clear from the numbers that that division takes less money to make the same amount of profit, which is a good thing for the company. Another benefit is the more Hasbro produces its own entertainment, the less dependent it is on other companies to get things done (and the less dependent it is on physical toy and game sales). The upfront investment was a bit steep, but it seems likely to pay off over time.
For sale: My entire Transformers and third-party collection. Includes Masterpiece, Generations, Universe, Movie, Prime, Armada/Energon/Cybertron, G1, G2, a few Japanese imports, etc. Many never opened, the rest displayed in enclosed display cases to keep the dust off. A few ads on Craigslist/OfferUp for DC/MD/VA locals, will post on boards or ebay when I have time.

Honestly, I'm only surprised that Boys revenue is down because both Avengers and Spider-Man merchandise hit the shelves during this quarter. I'm amazed that those two movie properties combined couldn't counter the lack of a Michael Bay Transformers film. And even though their loss in Transformers revenue was expected, maybe they could remedy that by putting their TV show on a network that people actually watch. Also, the sheer amount of Bumblebee at every store I go to is staggering. If they stopped putting so many of him in the case assortments, they could probably sell more product. And then there's the Bot Shots. Love 'em or hate 'em, they're taking away space that could be used for more mainline TF toys, and then maybe I could actually find a Vehicon or Airachnid. ><
Speaking of Bot Shots, how can their revenue be up from last year? They didn't EXIST last year.

They do keep track put thats the point of the size classes. It helps them sort then and make for a better inventory sheet when each toy can be easily organised in systems too

right and because each toy has a unique upc their pos system is able to keep track of it.....I'm also willing to bet they share that data with their vendors(in this case Hasbro)........and for the love of harry s truman why do i always spell their as their!
