It's interesting that they've been silent since the deadline extension nearly two weeks ago.

I would have thought they'd be pushing it more.
I just had a thought that could, admittedly, just be wishful thinking, but what if, in addition to ensuring that the figure gets made, they extended the deadline also because they just thought of something else that would be cool to include with this figure and needed the extended time in order to make this new thing and show it off to build up more hype before the deadline?

Entirely possible, and I would hope that's the case.

Not just "well ****, we didn't reach the deadline, let's extend it and ummm...what else should we do to promote this?"

Given the convenient fact the extension goes through NYCC, I would hope for some revel in this vein as well. Especially given the poor reception and low impact of the Galvatron slug, they have an opportunity to renew buzz at the convention with a well-executed bonus fill-in-the-blank.

Definitely time to get that Galvatron touched up. I’m excited to see what that looks like once finalized.

The point being, I'm not sure what your point is.

My point is clearly implying shell formers are poor design.

I personally would my rather have something that is worthy of the name transformer than somethjng that could just be a large rock Lord.

Then go back in time and smash Floron the Moron Dery's fingers to paste before he can finalize the robot mode design, so that someone who doesn't create untransformable robot modes can take over. As-is, shellforming is the only way to have a G1 Unicron with both a screen-accurate robot mode AND a screen-accurate planet mode.

I personally think the much cleaner robot mode, greater articulation and less reliance on shellforming on the Zeta is enough to eclipse the slightly less accurate planet mode. It still looks good, and whilst it's not spot-on accurate to the movie it's still immediately recognizable as Unicron. Not like they made him turn into a Borg Cube or something. The planet maw could maybe be better but it still opens and closes even without the geared system of the HasLab, and the swappable static but accurate maw is a cool touch. Reminds me of Soul of Chogokin figures which have transformable parts and anime-accurate parts depending on your tastes. Also, at least to me, the transformation is inspired- the fact he goes from a sphere to a really accurate Unicron with no partsforming and that his robot mode is basically made of the planet's surface is incredible.

The HasLab has the more accurate planet mode but the transformation is mostly just "curls into ball, flays legs into the planet crust" and he's a bit kibbly in robot mode. Also his articulation is less than impressive for the pricetag, and whilst his robot mode is OK (kibble aside) it's not as accurate as the Zeta offering.

Myself I'm not a big accuracy fiend (I still prefer to MP-10 school of thought with regards to MP design for example) and as mentioned I have no horse in this race anyway as I'm satisfied with the old Armada 'Cron, but if either mode should be more accurate, for Unicron it should be the robot mode. His planet mode, as long as it has the basic aesthetic cues and turns into a sphere, can get away with some creative liberties and still be obviously Unicron. The robot mode is utterly iconic.

The size issue I feel is kind of an odd one. I personally have little love for toys so large you need a crane to pose them, and I've always thought that especially with a guy like Unicron who is never going to be to scale with the rest of the collection ever ever ever, it makes more sense for them to be large and in charge but not ludicrously so, with the focus being on them being fun toys, rather than dedicating every element of their design to being ABSOLUTELY COLOSSAL. I get the argument of "He's Unicron, he needs to be huge" but honestly I feel a lot of the bigger TFs over the years could have benefited from being smaller, which would have negated the need for him to be so huge. Metroplex and Fort Max especially, as between their ha ha long boy legs, lacking engineering (they basically can't pose their legs whilst standing up due to having no ankle motion) and mediocre transformations, it feels like a lot was sacrificed in the name of raw size. Compare them to Trypticon and the upcoming Omega Supreme, who are smaller but IMO at least look a lot more fun. The only enormous TF I can think of who really works is actually G1 Fortress Maximus by virtue of being more of a convertible playset than a very large transforming action figure.

Just my thoughts anyway.

It's only 18" tall, boasts a non-accurate planet mode & non-accurate transformation, and is made by a company known for skimping on quality.

Enjoy.

I also think that Zeta's offering looks way too smooth looking but that could just be the lack of paint but still the lack of detailing makes it hard to consider.

To me Zeta is making a pretty low move releasing this right now. Yay competition I get it but seriously, vultures. Just sayin’ not trying to get too snarky about it but I can’t help it, it just seems like a lame move. That’s too bad.

I do have to admit that Hasbro's planet mode is the best. I just like Zeta's for the robot mode. Is it a lame move on their part to release this in the shadow of haslab, yes. But let's be honest. Who wants to pay that price for haslab?

Please bare with me gang I’m just venting in general:

It’s not even an official product and with the size it’s like, why.

And again with it coming out right now they have to prey on Hasbro sales and heat for their Unicron.

They can’t even sell this on its own merit. People are opting for this because it’s cheaper let’s be real. Everything else is a concession. I get it.

Ah, it just bugs me. Know what I mean?

It's not even real competition as they're just leeching off the ip. Zeta want to impress me they should make their own character up who shares nothing in common with unicron other then robot to planet. In fact I wish all 3p did that. The world needs more transforming robot franchises.

That's the real shame, understandable for business of course but in the end these companies are making success not necessarily because of themselves and their own hard work but because their banking their profits off of someone else's IP by taking advantage of those who want Masterpiece or Chug versions of characters that Hasbro hasn't made yet or in this case trying to undermine the official company by making a version that's banking on people to get it on the draw that it's a "cheaper" alternative.

I prefer upgrade kits/accessory packs because they actually expand on what Hasbro does and are intended for one to actually get the original official product, I've gotten a couple of weapon stuff for Siege figures such as Ironhide for arm cannons and they actually help make those products more fun.

This may just be me, but I think we're giving too much exposure to a third party, unlicensed product in this discussion thread, which is supposed to be dedicated to an official Hasbro crowd-funded product. Maybe the discussion on this "competition" should be kept to the third party boards and threads?

Even doing a Primus (Pramoose?) would be more original.
