I wish the brand wasn't so stuck to Nostalgia, but it's giving the company short term gains so that's where their focus is.

Well, CHUG has always been nostalgia-based. What annoys me is crap like Bungledbee where the non-nostalgia franchise gets hijacked.

Sentinel shows how much better they are doing with this one. I actually wish unicron had waited a year or 2 to come out, I think they rushed that one, especially since he is the most expensive one.

Also, I have been talking to some main marvel collectors as well as some marvel collectors who also collect transformers, and there were some interesting points brought up about the 2 fandoms/brands.

the general consensus from those conversations is marvel handles it's brand far better than Hasbro with TFs, and that TFs rely too heavily on nostalgia. TFs constantly go back to the same source, while marvel balances it all out, something for everyone out and available at wider retail at all times. And as a result, they have both a larger fan base and a more active one since fans of every generation have something to look forward to, almost the opposite of what TFs are doing.

Couple a wider, happier, marvel fandom with a large potential troop builder, sole focus on 1 project, tiers for bonus parts, and a more palatable price, it shows just how much more cohesive, happy, and excited the marvel fandom is compared to tfs.

If they had simplified engineering and made Unicron $100 cheaper, I don't think that alone would have made a difference.

In all fairness, Marvel's been around much longer and kno whow to manage their stuff, and while they've done plenty of reboots and resets over the years, the core timeline is still relatively intact.

They're also more geared towards selling comic books and movie tickets whereas Hasbro is all about toys, and that doesn't give them much in the way of flexibility as kids these days only care about a set group of characters ... plus there's holding onto trademarks.

Ah yes because the people who wanted a G1-styled live action film getting 1 after 5 Bayverse films is so darn unreasonable.

Like come on, the Bay films practically ended besides the Unicron stuff, it was over, finished.

Let those who waited get their turn.

I guess I just think differently. I don't care about scale when it comes to one-off figures. I don't play with my toys so I just like nice shelf pieces, be it 4" or 24". I have that big 23" Mattel Voltron, I think it's great aside from being twice the price it should have been (it's much more toy than collectible, the Netflix Voltron line is better made), I don't need it to be the same size as the other Voltrons in my collection (which are all different sizes anyway. For that matter all of my Megazords are pretty different sizes as well. Bandai even did a line of Jumbo Megazords in the 2000s.

Maybe it's just me.

The Sentinel page is now doing the same thing the Unicron page did, the counter just says 6,000+ instead of a live count like before. They've noted that they're over 8,500+ orders, but I'm guessing they're trying to prevent people from asking for more stretch goals after is sails past 9,000 by hiding the actual count. It's the opposite problem Unicron had. If they hid Unicron's count so they could pad disappointing numbers then they're hiding the Sentinel's numbers because they're selling too many too quickly.

If anyone cares the first stretch goal was for a Master Mold head while the second was a battle damaged head. In a way we did get some stretch goals for Unicron as they added a few things to the package after launch

Plus, Imaginext already made a gigantic 27.5-inch Megazord that looks nice as it is and is even bigger than the giant Movie Megazord, so the concept has already been done, size-wise.

It is incredible, the sentinel crossed its final tier within 3 days of going up.

I hope that if there is another Transformers haslab project, they can take lessons learned and apply it the way they did for Sentinel. There is a clear difference in project success stories

Oh Sentinel was certainly properly proportioned price wise. 2 inches shorter, but a lot less engineering needed. But they used new cues and items that certainly helped the excitement factor. Unlike unicron, there was near universal excitement and joy here. And a bunch of cool stuff to help encourage people to spend the money.

I hope that when TFs do get another Haslab, that things work better

I'll say it before and I'll say again: The performance with Unicron really does smack of them relying on the Unicron-focused 6th Bayformer movie to generate hype, and frantically fumbling about when that rug got pulled out from under their feet.

What about the other notion of 2021 (the year in which HasLab Unicron will be released) being the 35th anniversary of TFTM?

I'd say that that's a fitting release timing. But I don't think they were expecting that anniversary to be their source of hype for the funding campaign. If they were, they certainly didn't act like it.

Although speaking of anniversaries of The Transformers: The Movie... Some people wondered why we got Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Galvatron, Scourge, Wheelie, and another Arcee (albeit as an exclusive retool based on "The Rebirth") during the Headmaster-oriented Titans Return. I wonder if they considered that that line was pulling double-duty as a 30th Anniversary line for the movie.

Connecting this Unicron to TLK's version is seeing patters where none exist. There's just nothing in common between the two of them.

I think Hasbro was relying on the "wow" factor too much. But that's about it.

As for an annaversary prompting Hasbro and Takara to make the movie guys Headmasters, I suppose it makes sense. But they were all Targetmasters too, so it's a lateral move in many ways. And then there's all the characters who weren't in the movie also in the line. So I think it's also kind of reaching.

You really think it's that illogical to see a connection-between:
* Unicron-centric movie was supposed to come out in Summer 2019, which - being a Unicron-centric movie and all - would have had everyone thinking about Unicron in general.
and
* Hasbro launches Unicron campaign in late Summer 2019, at about the point when the movie (had it come out) would have been out long enough for that to take effect
And people have pointed out that the pre-campaign development had to have been going on for a while, easily far enough back that TF6 could have still been on the slate when it started...

I don't think it's really fair to say "There's just nothing in common between the two of them". That's like saying there's nothing in common between G1, Armada, and Prime Unicron (the latter of whom Bayverse Unicron obviously draws from). Yes, all we saw in TLK itself was his protruding horns... but it's still made clear that he's got basically the same role in Transformers cosmology as other Unicrons, and no doubt he would have been fully awake and speaking and about to cause the end of the world in the next movie.

Gauntlet101010 wrote:I suppose them all being Headmasters on an anniversary makes sense. But they were all Targetmasters too, so it's a lateral move in many ways. And then there's all the characters who weren't in the movie also in the line.
I, um, don't think you quite got the point I'm making. Let me try to clarify...

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:Although speaking of anniversaries of The Transformers: The Movie...
Here's the first part, separated to make it clear what anniversary I'm talking about.

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:Some people wondered why we got Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Galvatron, Scourge, Wheelie, and another Arcee (albeit as an exclusive retool based on "The Rebirth") during the Headmaster-oriented Titans Return.
Here, I'm talking about two things:
1. that Titans Return was a Headmaster-oriented line; Headmasters 2.0 essentially.
2. That people questioned the presence of Hot Rod, Galvatron, et al (in other words, non-Headmaster characters) in a neo-Headmaster line

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:I wonder if they considered that that line was pulling double-duty as a 30th Anniversary line for the movie.
And here I'm saying that it's because said neo-Headmaster line was doubling as a TFTM 30th Anniversary line. Which, due to timing, it was - Titans Return launched in 2016, 30 years after the movie.

Hopefully that helps <.>

Yeah, I got it. I just don't really buy it.

Sure Kup, Blur, Hot Rod, etc weren't Headmasters. But they were Targetmasters - and famous TFs to boot. Plus it, and the previous line, both had a ton of reoccurring characters that filled new roles. By the same token the Dinobots were never combiners.

I understand that there was a whole lot of movie themed toys going on. But there was a lot of Seasons 1 - 2 going on in Combiner Wars. There's a whole lot of that whole era going on in TFs in general.

And beyond Titans we had Rodimus in Primes, Springer and UM in Siege, Arcee, Alicons, and Quintessons coming very soon in Earthrise with Sharkticons and Quintessons in Cyberverse too alongside Hot Rod.

In large or in small it's always movie nostalgia time. In larger part it's always early G1 nostalgia time with the movie being the transition point to late G1. Maybe it's a movie anniversary. Maybe it's just them moving to the next era after Combiner Wars was Seasons 1-2.

You really think it's that illogical to see a connection-between:
...
I don't think it's really fair to say "There's just nothing in common between the two of them".

I wouldn't call it "illogical." But it's always going on.

Unicron is just always there. If he isn't a new toy he's in a cartoon. If it's not the cartoon it's the comics. He's just never gone for long. So, while you're not being illogical, I just don't think that the Haslabs people were relying on any word of mouth from TLK. Especially when TLK's version is so radically different from what they were making.

I'm still pretty sure they were in Titans Return because of the movie anniversary timing. The not-inconsequential difference between the Season 1-2 cast in Combiner Wars and the TFTM cast in TR is that the Season 1-2 cast in CW were mostly just headswap redecoes, a role reversal of the Dragstrip-as-a-Mirage-Redeco kind of thing from the Universe era... and the TR TFTM characters are all brand-new molds (except for Arcee and the Rodimus Prime headmaster). To have that many of them, especially Galvatron, in one line at that time... I don't think it's coincidental. PotP Rodimus Prime, and SIEGE UM and Springer, seem like essentially cleanup of the leftover cast. I wonder if Hasbro will provide a definitive answer if I ask.

Okay Zelda, calm down. Some people just won't see things the way you do.

And was the TLK sequel really going to come out less than a year after the Bee movie? It would have been a financial failure. I think a lot of people were getting burned out on Bayverse and if the Bee movie wasn't so different in its tone and had some G1 goodness in it, it would have flopped as well.

Personally, I would have preferred the sequel to TLK instead of the Bee movie. Even though I think the Wahlberg movies were a step down from the 1st trilogy. Not Mark's fault.

To be on topic, though, I also have to say that if there was a TLK sequel, it might have served as a hype to the HasLab figure, but that had to be in the works for quite a while before the fate of the 6th Bay film was decided.

Alright, alright. I just got frustrated because I was clearly talking about the TLK sequel and Gauntlet kept responding as if I was talking about TLK.

Well, from what I understand, when the third Wahlberg movie was slated for 2019 (I seem to recall an article announcing that) there was no Bumblebee movie; they basically did the 2018 Bumblebee prequelrebootwhatever (that, through its GEEWUN worship, mangles the already-shaky continuity so bad that Kurtzman, Orci, and Kruger look like perfect continuity-custodians by comparison) instead of the TLK sequel. Which is a big part of why I hate it so much.

Rodimus Prime wrote:Personally, I would have preferred the sequel to TLK instead of the Bee movie. Even though I think the Wahlberg movies were a step down from the 1st trilogy. Not Mark's fault.
No, it's Spielberg's. :-x I too was looking forward to the TLK sequel. It promised to be a big exciting finish, and I had a bit more faith in the team after TLK answered the "What happened to Cybertron" question DOTM left us with and AoE ignored.

Rodimus Prime wrote:To be on topic, though, I also have to say that if there was a TLK sequel, it might have served as a hype to the HasLab figure, but that had to be in the works for quite a while before the fate of the 6th Bay film was decided.
That development lead time on the HasLab figure is part of why I think they would have been expecting the 6th Bay film to build Unicron hype for them, and thus didn't have an independent PR plan prepared.

I did read your posts, but it's still TLK's Unicron. Would you rather I say Bayverse Unicron? It amounts to the same thing, doesn't it?

I think you need to respond to the spirit of the argument more than the wording, man.

My response to your points about timing is that Unicron is always around, in some form. Same goes for movie related characters.

So, you might have a point relating to Titans Return. Maybe. But there's also a lot of characters in the line including Six Shot and Octane - you're just focusing on on the characters that support your point. It might be relating directly to the movie or it might relate to everything post seasons 1 - 2 ... which would include not only the movie characters, but also characters like Six Shot, Overlord, Pretenders, etc.

But I think it's far shakier on Unicron's promotion depending on TLK's sequel. That seems far more speculative (what the movie's about, the release date, Unicron's involvement). There's no need to get mad. I get your point. I just don't agree with your interpretation.

Wording is important, considering that in your last post you talked as if I was saying TLK itself was supposed to hype HasLab Unicron; that's what made me think you were skimming.
But you want spirit of the argument? You kept going on about how "TLK Unicron has nothing in common with G1 Unicron", I presume because all you see of him in TLK is his planet-mode horns piercing through Earth's crust. To which I already countered that:
1. He is still built up as an ancient enemy of Cybertron and destroyer of worlds, sort of thing
2. He's not fully active in TLK; he's a looming future threat, rather than the main one. In the sequel we would presumably have seen him awake and talking and appearing in robot mode (probably via an avatar a la Prime Unicron, to avoid them having to glue Earth back together after beating him) and generally showing more of what people recognize as Unicron. Hence why I kept stressing the sequel.

Gauntlet101010 wrote:My response to your points about timing is that Unicron is always around, in some form.
My response to that is: that form is not always a wide-release theatrical motion picture, with all the attendant marketing fanfare thereof. He may often have some level of fictional or toyline presence, but A FREAKING MOVIE is a substantially bigger presence.

Gauntlet101010 wrote:Same goes for movie related characters.

Well, first of all, Six Shot being in the line ties in with it being a Headmaster line considering that on both sides of the Pacific he joined the story and toyline at the same time as they did, ditto for the Monsterbots and Targetmasters and Clones.
I focus on the movie characters because they are the ones people most strongly questioned the presence of; you do remember all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over them being included in the Headmaster-centric line and thereby becoming Headmasters, right?
Here's how I see it:
1. They put Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Scourge, and Galvatron (plus Wheelie and Gnaw at the Legends size class, but since Legends-class characters didn't have their heads coming off and turning into little figures, there wasn't a stink about them) in because it was the 30th anniversary of the movie
2. Then they picked Octane, Broadside, et al because they needed more characters to fill the Voyager class with and weren't sure how to do the Horrorcons while dealing with TR's one-size-fits-all stipulation for the Headmasters (notice that as soon as that and PotP's stipulations were gone, they gave us first Apeface and now Snapdragon); even if they had done the Horrorcons, that would only have filled two slots.
3. After running out of Headmasters characters they could do easily, they started reaching for both characters who hadn't been done yet (like the Jumpstarters) and characters from the next era from G1 (such as Breakaway and Overlord) to further enlarge the line. Overlord was also there because they needed big guys who could turn into bases to fill out the Leader class.
Also, the only Pretender in Titans Return is Metalhawk from the "Siege on Cybertron" boxset. :P

Gauntlet101010 wrote:But I think it's far shakier on Unicron's promotion depending on TLK's sequel. That seems far more speculative (what the movie's about, the release date, Unicron's involvement). There's no need to get mad. I get your point. I just don't agree with your interpretation.
Well, first off, with the ending of TLK the sequel would have a reeeeally hard time being about anything other than Unicron :P . Second, I really do seem to recall that it was initially announced for 2019, a news article about the date and cast or somesuch.

Wording isn't that important. You can't just attack over wording, it's frustrating. Look at the argument made.

I've bolded the important part of your sentence and the part I take issue with.

You're presuming Unicron has a robot mode in the movie. You're presuming he has a consciousness ... you're presuming he'd wake up. Right now, based on what we know - and not what we'd presume to be the case - Unicron is totally different from G1. He may be a planet, but he's not even the same planet.

I mean, yeah. It was super awkward that the sequel was a prequel in the form of Bumblebee. Movies do super awkward things when they think they'll get another movie and it gets weird when the next movie just doesn't follow.

My response to that is: that form is not always a wide-release theatrical motion picture, with all the attendant marketing fanfare thereof. He may often have some level of fictional or toyline presence, but A FREAKING MOVIE is a substantially bigger presence.

Yeah, that sure would have brought in attention. But I don't think that had anything to do with their PR strategy or character choice.

Unicron is an important character who is always around. It seems to me that they thought the "wow" factor would be enough. There's no actual evidence to think they thought they could coast off a movie that didn't materialize based on a plotline that you're just guessing at.

That's why I think this is a few shades less likely than you're other premise. You presume Unicron would be the focus of a sequel. You presume Unicron is similar enough to make people want G1 Unicron. You presume Haslabs knew that the movie would would bring hype and you presume that they relied on that hype.

I mean ... it's a lot less presumptuous to think that they were just arrogant.

Movies get delayed. The TLK sequel movie became the Bumblebee movie. Maybe if they followed plans it would have all dovetailed together, but to say their PR strategy relied on that to the point of crippling their strategy when it didn't happen ... it's just a bridge too far.

I focus on the movie characters because they are the ones people most strongly questioned the presence of; you do remember all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over them being included in the Headmaster-centric line and thereby becoming Headmasters, right?

But you're entire narrative revolves around those characters and only those characters because it was a movie anniversary.

While it might have influenced character choice, I still don't see it as more likely than basing their thinking around the Headmaster cartoon and the post-movie era where they also existed. They aren't making Target Masters, but they wanted to include them. So: Headmasters.

Making a counter narrative revolving around the movie is just unnecessary.

Haslab Unicron Update #3- Packaging and Unboxing And Designing The Instructions

Postby Bounti76 » Thu Aug 06, 2020 12:35 pm

Weapon: Vibro-Axe
Thanks to transformers_va, one of our own fellow Seibertronians, we've been directed to Hasbro Pulse, and their latest update on War for Cybertron Unicron!

Transformers fans! We’re excited to bring you an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at packaging and instructions development for Unicron!

We're treated first to a closer look at the packaging and an unboxing video for the Chaos Bringer, showing us just how he'll look when he arrives at the doors of those who backed him via the crowdfunding effort late last year.

We then are taken through the process of designing the instruction booklet for Unicron, which is a whopping 32 pages long! Mark, a Senior Graphic Designer for the project, goes into the details of how instructions are made, and his process of working with the prototype at home to develop the instructions.

Q: Can you walk us through the typical Transformers instructions process?

A: Our development process actually begins a year before our toys hit in-store retail and “online” shelves. Since the early 1980s, Hasbro has partnered with Takara Tomy, located in Japan, for the development of the Transformers brand’s toys. This all starts with “TT,” as we call them, providing us with reference CADD images or videos, called photosteps, that show how to convert each Transformers figure. From there, I review each conversion assembly, step-by-step, marking-up TT’s photo steps with my own comments and recommendations for improvement that will make the most sense for our consumer.

If you needed further proof of the size of Unicron's box, the Brand Manager, Rachel, shows that a six foot tall human can easily fit inside.

And finally, the engineer's best assistant, Charlie, shows us that this box is definitely kitty-approved.

Thanks to Hasbro giving us another thorough update on the process of bringing the largest-ever Transformer to life. He's not due out until January 2021, but that's only 5 short months away! Share your thoughts about this latest update below!

I had to include those, because wasn't the Internet made for looking at cat pictures and arguing with strangers?
