In Their Own Words - Rare toy article for TFSource

Postby Maz » Tue Apr 03, 2012 1:09 pm

Hi all,

After the good reception I received for the collectors' partner interviews a couple of weeks ago, I decided to make further use of the community this week for TFSource blog's weekly articles. I've asked a number of long-time and prominent collectors in their field to offer up one rare/obscure/surprising toy from their areas of interest and talk a little about it. The hope is that these knowledgeable collectors will highlight to the wider community some of the more unknown difficult toys from various sub-categories of TF collecting.

The first part in the series concentrates more on production Transformers from various countries, and I would like to thank Mijo, Jon Krause, Martin Lund, Heroic Decepticon, HighPrime and Marco Salerno for their fantastic contributions and for sharing their passion and knowledge.

Enjoy!

Meh...

I was expecting REAL rare TF. Not just the usual dudes but mint or really 100% complete. Only Doubleclouder can be considered "rare" because even if you don't care about the packaging, trying to have a comple Doubleclouder is a challenge in itself. Then again, he's just a Doubledealer repaint.

Show me some REAL rare TF. No repaints allowed. Barely offered on Ebay or any marketplaces. Only a very limited print run was ever produced. Now THEN it's rare for real.
The only one I can think of that follow these criterias is Energon Wingsaber. Beside the empty box offered for 30$ (lol) it's very rare that we see... some... more... on............... Ebay.............. AW COME ON! Now that I finally have mine for a few months, now there's 5 or 6 offered on Ebay?! Oh well.

Need to find something else, then. Obviously, even Lucky Draw are disqualified. Even at 3 copies maximum at 5000$ each they are still just gold repaints of normal TF. Any one that have been re-issued are out too. The mold must be unique and be still extremely hard to find, even if you would be a millionaire with lots of money and resources. That's why good old FortMax is out because any idiot with 600-3000$ to burn can have one within 24 hours.

So, what are the TRUELY RARE Transformers?

Great article. It's nice to find out about lesser known variants and rarities from other countries.

Pretty much all of them are rare due to their obscurity, be it manufacturer, color variant or condition. Sure you can get a reissues Megatron, but that things is near pristine almost 30 years of safeguarding. It's beautiful!
Just for you, it's about the only real rare item I own, and they really are hard to come across(unless knocked off), enjoy:

I'm sure they sell on ebay, but never when I do a search.

OH GOD I REMEMBER THIS!

DAT NOSTALGIA RUSH!

Man, what is the name of that thing? I'm not the one to wear watches, but man, I will wear that thing proudly!

*engaging Ebay search*

As expected... noting. :/

Edit:
Looking closer, I just saw "Transformers Generation 2" on it. In my exitement, I got my memories mixed up. I do remember a Pacman watch in my 1980's childhood, but I'm sure something similar as your watch exsisted a the time.

I still want that thing.
...
If it's still work, are you willing to sell or trade? :-?

It's a G2 Scorpia

Ebay was many nice TF watches(some I really want"Looking at you Time Machine")
but I couldn't find a Scorpia.

Seibertron has a nice gallery of an unofficial version

That was originally a Watch Q Scorpion by Takara in Japan. There was one on auction here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WATCH-Q-MICRO ... 500wt_1413

It was also available as a Joustra Diaclone "Scorpion" in Europe from Takara. As you say, there are KOs also.

I'm still waiting for the chance to score the Joustra version.

All the best

Funny you should have brought up the Scorpia watch... ;)

Here's Part 2 of the "In Their Own Words" series, again featuring some really fantastic contributions from the likes of Hydra, Ras, Paul Hitchens , Morgan Evans, Might Gaine and Arkvander.

We move a little away from standard G1 Transformers toys and explore some more recent stuff and even peripheral TF products. Enjoy!

Part 2 is even better than part 1!
The Overlord KO is really stunning, I love the chrome.
Any one have picks of the assembled Reflector kits? It sounds very interesting.

Also glad to see I'm not the only one who really digs the Scorpia, or TF watches for that matter. The earlier Kronoform\Watch Q watch stuff is ridiculous in it's own rights as well, really want a Deceptor(ok I want them all). Think I need to hunt a Chrono Label Time Limit for my next serious buy though.

the Reflector kits make me wonder if a possible Kabaya release would be feasible down the line
