Just saw the new Turtles movie. (Spoilers inside.)

Motto: "Individual freedom above all else."
I just got back from the Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Let me say right off that there was nothing I disliked about it. It was a lot of fun. Some spoilers follow.

I won't make this long, just touching on some main things. Megan Fox did well enough as April O'Neil. If she made any mistakes I didn't notice, because she wasn't the focus of the film. Rightfully, the Turtles were. The only thing that was obvious was that she had some minor plastic surgery to her face. It was noticeable every time she smiled. Will Arnett was good as the comic sidekick Vern Fenwick. He had some good 1-liners, only to be bested by Mikey. The Shredder wasn't elaborated on much, just that he was a Japanese martial arts master who was greedy and had it in mind to make his Foot Clan unstoppable, using the mutagen that turned the Turtles into who they are. His human collaborator, Eric Sachs, played by the always awesome William Fichtner, was menacing enough, but again, he wasn't the main focus of the film, so he did what he had to do to pass his screen time without coming off boring or annoying.

Now. Onto the Turtles and Splinter. My favorite has always been Donatello, and after this movie I like the character even more, if that was possible. He was the glasses-wearing, bow staff-wielding tech wizard, who in my opinion had the best line in the movie: "Can I be the badass just this once?" And proceeds to be just that. Mikey had more than a few good 1-liners, mixed in with some unhealthy obsession with April. He was definitely played up as the irresponsible, little bit horny teenager. Basically, he was hitting on April. A LOT. To me it was funny, but considering the suggested inter-species erotica, it might be off-putting to some. Raphael was like he was in his previous iterations, kind of an emo hard ass. However, that pays off at the end in an emotional yet funny moment during the movie's climax. He's also the only 1 to take on Shredder by himself, besides Splinter. Leonardo wasn't given much, he was just kind of the "extra Turtle" until the end, when through teamwork it is established that he is the leader, because he can get them all to work together. Splinter had his moments, from providing the back story of how they came to be, and a pretty cool showdown with Shredder, that actually reminded me very much of Optimus against Megatron from the 1st film. (He gets a few shots in, but Shredder basically bitch slaps him around the sewers, until the Turtles give themselves up.)

The story of the film wasn't complicated, but it was delivered clearly, and the awesome action sequences (fights, a really cool truck chase) supported the progression of the events without wasting time. Basically, it was almost like Age of Extinction with all the slow parts taken out. You could definitely see Bay's influence, even though he was just the producer. But the final product was better than AoE, because Bay didn't have final say. I don't want to start an argument about AoE or Bay, I just brought it up because he was involved in the production of this movie. The only thing that was kind of a disappointment, was that the end sequence almost copied the 1st Amazing Spider-Man, with the Lizard climbing up to the top of a New York skyscraper to release a toxic gas, with the Shredder replacing the Lizard, and the Turtles and April replacing Spider-Man. Also, at the very end, they do get their iconic van with the launch pad from the 80s cartoon. Bay did throw in a slight nod to Rosie-Huntington Whiteley as a Victoria's Secret model at the very end. All I gotta say is, turtle shell bra! :D

Overall, as I said, I had fun from beginning to end, there's nothing outright bad I can say about it. The story wasn't taken from any previous TMNT continuities, just some details of it. I definitely recommend it. If you're a die-hard TMNT fan, you might be disappointed, but as a fun sci-fi movie, it's well worth the time and money. It was a bit campy at times, but in a good way, like the Batman movie with Jack Nicholson. I might go see it again in 3D. The visuals (especially the Turtles) were amazing.

You know, I used to love turtles as a kid (though in the UK they were Hero Turtles instead of Ninja Turtles for reasons I don't know), saw a lil bit of the 2003 series, I quite liked the new Shredder from this show. I heard this movie was being made, believed the early rumours, and laughed the movie off.

But I gotta say, your review (and others) are making me think that this franchise may be worth getting into again :)

Be interesting to see how many of those that tore the movie down before even seeing it and blaming Bay (even though he's only Producer) do a 180 and praise the movie and the Director (while never mentioning the Producer)

I knew the critics was only shitting on the movie because they hate Micheal Bay with a passion even though he didn't direct it. I was just watching sharknado and had to turn that crap off yet the critics give that a 82% and gave TMNT a 19%? Yeah critics are dead to me.

He has a say in the movie but its Liebesmanns movie so why trash it before it comes out. But the story plot changes with project Rennasance and April's turtles being the quartet before their experiment, but the story has a lot of heart lots of laughs, good action, and some reviews said that the turtles were to overpowered. But when the Footclan raid the layer there butts are kicked. :michaelbay: 8)

This movie had some of the most badass fight scenes I've ever seen. I wish more movies ended with a badass fight against the main villain. They used to, but not as of late.

So I finally saw it just now and I have to say the critics are friggin stupid!

Shredder wasn't a white guy like some have said.

Shredder is a beast of a villain and his heavy suit didn't slow him down one bit!

The Turtles are all terrific in there personalities and features. It works well

Splinter was also a friggin beast but at the same time he was a good spirited master/father to the Turtles.

Megan Fox wasn't as bad as April as people have said. She was likable and not just cause she is good looking.

The plot of the movie is a generic bad guy/good guy plot. But what movie with hero's doesn't have a generic plot?

I prefer this movie to the crap that everybody is praising Guardians of the Galaxy. Why?

Better villain(Shredder is better than all the usable villains in Guardian)

Better hero's( I prefer the brotherly heroism of the turtles and the fact that they are really strong and know how to fight vs almost none of the Guardians being able to fight well and just use guns mainly)

As far as story both movies have ok plot's because both plot's is very simplistic. They aren't complex plots. Just simple save the day type plots.

The comedy of both films is on the same level.(Michelangelo and Rocket is the stars of both movies in comedy)

To be fair guardians is setting up for a real badass of a villain in the future with its infinity gems storyline. Also some of the critics I've seen love guardians for how outthere it is and what it could mean for the future (DC and Marvel taking chances with unknown titles)

I'm not getting involved with a versus thing though the only common element is that they are comic adaptations.

Oh I know it is. But in my opinion I didn't care for them like I do the Avengers.

Rocket is only good for jokes

Groot can only say "I am Groot"

Drax is only good because things go over his head

Gamora felt like her place on the team was to be the future girlfriend of Starlord's(typical female role in movies)

Starlord is so damn cheesy and he's not funny to me.

This movie has no:-

Insane amount of explosions
Sexual jokes
Animal humping
Immature content
Megan Fox as sex appeal
Turtles ripping people face off

In other words it is missing Michael Bay's "charm"

WHICH IS GOOD! :D

No it's not.

Michael Bay did not direct the movie. Michael Bay did not write the movie.

Michael Bay produced the movie. Producers have limited input.

Give the credit to the writer and the director.

I didn't get any sarcasm there as the opposite means he wanted that stuff. Sigh I wish I knew what to say to all those people who sees bay's name anywhere on the film poster and just start with the critisms.

Watched more previews of this and it looks good, however due to certain things and a friend hellbent on seeing guardians for the third time I may have to just wait till it hits the shops :( Though having said that, given AoE is comingout fairly soon, this should be out before the end of the year.

At least you have the option to go see it. Have to wait a few weeks for the stupid school holidays before it's released in Australia.

By then I pretty much won't care about it.

Sorry Burn, but you kinda contradicted yourself here. You said Bay didn't write or direct, only produce, which means limited input. So the film WAS missing Bay's "charm."

Actually, my view of the reply meant that there was never going to have bays charm anyway as he was only the producer. Basically how could something be missing if it wasnt going to be there in the first place?

Well, the Turtles kicked ass this weekend. They scored $65 million in the U.S. alone, beating Guardians by about $24 million. Suck it, critics. You've been wrong so many times this summer. Time to get with the population and stop being so out of touch with society. Rotten Tomatoes is worthless, and anyone paying attention to that site is seriously misinformed. Paramount already announced a sequel, to be released on June 3, 2016. I'm glad the movie did well, it was fun. I'll probably see it in 3D before it leaves theaters.

I really went against the critics from the start. I am a big turtles fan and they did really good considering the problems they faced before it came out. I can't wait for the sequel. And it comes out the same year as tf5!!

The critics rarely think about what the people want and will see. The success of the transformers movies is testament to that. Critics review on their preferences and then hope people reading or watching follow them (and adopt their view for arguments without having seen the movie). There is some that won't do this of course.

What I think would be better is if all reviews just ditched their scoring systems entirely.

As for guardians opening vs turtles opening, its expected more people know who the turtles are then there is people who know who the guardians of the galaxy are (Turtles 34+ years and counting v guardians 6 years).

Though I hope both movies do really well, to encourage risk taking in the adaptation of comics and breathing new life into the movie arm of a franchise.

Saw it again, tonight. Still enjoyed it much more than GOTG. GOTG was just boring the second time I watched it. I realized that I liked this movie because it reminded me of Rami's Spider-Man movies. AND this movie knew when to make light of a situation. Unlike GOTG, where everything was one big ******* joke. I never even laughed at any of the jokes in that movie. I got them. Just found them unfunny. But I actually laughed in TMNT, both times I watched it. DAMNIT, human kind infuriates me to no end.

I guess your talking about guardians there. Stuff like that, if it exists, are better to find on the home release. I found the infinity gauntlet in Thor much easier that way.

Though at first I thought you were talking about the turtles movie. I was wondering if they were seriously doing another crossover. Last one like that was turtles versus power rangers ;)

To whom this is important, apparently Baxter Stockman is in the new Turtles movie, according to Megan Fox, but it's just a cameo and you have to look for him, perhaps through repeated viewings. Personally, I don't care, but I thought I'd post it. I just watched an interview with her about it, and I thought she looked more attractive in the interview than she did in the movie.
