Karma

Postby SlimmyJim » Tue Mar 27, 2007 8:18 pm

What are your opinions on karma? And for those of you who don't know what karma is, it is basically "what goes around comes around" and "good things happen to people who do good while the opposite happens to those who do bad.

Heres my view on the issue:

RUMOR OF KARMA: The universe in itself is sentient, and therefore has the ability to judge and bring consequence to those it views as deserving it.

TRUTH: Life is completely random. The poorest person could be in that situation because of his overwhelming hospitality, while oppurtunists who take advatage of the weak manage to pull themselves up the social chain.

Karma, to me, seems to be real. If you do something you know is wrong but you still do it. Later you may get hit with something bad, may seem like a coincidence, and it may ifnact be a coincidence.

Guess it depends on how you look at the situation.

My other view on Karma, is that it's self inflicted, if you believe in karma and you do something, you may think that Karma will come back to bite you, and it very well will because you believe it will happen.

I entirly believe in Karma.

All matter is essentially energy and you emit energy by doing/feeling/and speaking everyday. When you emit those energies the same type of energies are attracted to you.

I forgot the name of it, but there's supposedly a proven law to support this. I'll ask my mom later.

karma=bullshit, as good and bad are subjective terms based on your morality.

there is also the logic (and i don't like it at all), that states if someone is suffereing then they are suffering becuase he universe wants them to suffer,i.e they did something bad, and the universe is punishing them for it, in which case we shouldn't alleviate that persons suffereing becuase that would be interfering with their "deserved suffering". this brings up the point of whether you do a good thing for a bad person you are aiding a bad thing, so in yourself are doing a bad thing.

for example if man A did something bad, and his bad karma means he know sleeps on the streets, man B putting a roof over his head is in fact going against cosmic justice(karma) which is a bad thing.

thus the only people you can help/do good things for without attracting bad karma yourself, are people who don't need help, becuase they have good karma.

in short doing a good thing for a bad person is in fact doing a bad thing so will net you bad karma. so you should only help people who are suffering less than yourself

and what did the third world do to deserve so many wars, famines, plagues, dictatorships, etc?

"What comes around, goes around" is perfectly applicable within the context of a group of people. After all, people's dispositon to you generally depends upon their past experiences with you. In that sense karma exists.

On a grander scale, though? Most likely not. If you believe in karma and then go and do something that would cause you to deserve something bad happening to you and something bad really does happen to you at a later point, you will associate this unfortunate event with your earlier transgression against your moral code. Something you don't like will eventually happen to you, after all.

It's how horoscopes still hang around. Offer generic enough advice and chances are there'll be something that fits in retrospect.

Technically, there is no such thing as “good karma.” Karma, by actual definition, is bad energy. The closest thing you can get to “good” is “null karma.”

Karma is the harm that you do in this life; it accumulates on you like tarnish on silver, only there is no way to polish it off. You can only try to slow (or ideally: arrest) its accumulation. When you transubstantiate (reincarnate,) the karma weighs you down, and determines your form in the next life. The purest become priests and mystics, or maybe even are released from the vicious cycle of life. The heaviest are doomed to ignoble lives of filth and squalor.

Karma doesn’t even come back to bite you now. It’s almost like “sin,” in that it only affects a person at judgment.

“Good karma” is a western feel-good misapplication of an eastern belief.

Do I believe in karma? No. Do I believe that good deeds come back to you and bad deeds as well? Yes.

I believe that the emotional lives of members of a community are interconnected and interrelated. Any action affecting the emotional state of one member has ramifications for the whole. This is not necessarily a mystical belief, although it can be perceived that way. Any action that enhances the emotional life of an individual enhances the emotional state of the community, and may eventually cascade back to the “initiator.” Unfortunately, the effects of “good deeds” seem to transfer more slowly than “bad deeds.” Individuals with abnormal emotional reactions can also complicate this pattern.

Same as OP and Kj-- real karma, no, social karma, yes, at least to a point, specifically, as long as the offender is on the same general social level as the offended.

My karma seems to act differently to the 'accepted definition' of Karma. I seem to live with a 'standard level' of luck. Nothing especially bad happens to me, but nothing especially good happens either. However, sometimes, I get a blip in this level. The size of the blip can vary, be it finding that elusive tf, performing extremely well at Uni in subjects I know nothing about, or seeing old friends. However, an equal amount of bad luck usually strikes afterwards, be it that tf being really overpriced, a lass I like saying we will never be anything more than friends or suffering a breakdown. The good and bad blips can come in any order, and a week or two apart, or even on the same day, but they always come in pairs. Then I go back to the usual level of luck for another few months until the next blip.

I know this sounds crazy, and I'm sure people will think that this is psycological but that's how Karma seems to work for me.

On the other hand, I know a guy who has recently developed a concience (sp?) and had a turn around because bad stuff kept happening to him. Now he stopped doing 'bad things' alot less bad things happen to him.

We used to have a saying "good at dice, bad at love." The converse was also believed to be true. We played alot of rpg's and rolled many dice.

i disagree with you Prive, i'm fairly sure in hinduism that karma is roughly translater to "deed", meaning something that you've done, and the concept is pretty much that you reap what you sow.

i also disagree with Kjell that all people are created equal and that while somebody is good one thing, they'll bad at something else to equalise the amount of good things they are are good at with the rest of the population.

"...All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration … that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves."- Bill Hicks

Karma, as in you get what you give, would definitely exist and it would only be as strong as your proximity to the center of the subconscious awareness, metaphysically speaking.

Religious people believe in Karma, but they don't get what they deserve until they die, aside from the death bed confession. Evil actions far outweigh Good actions when the time comes.

Atheistic people do whatever they want. Most of them believe that good and evil are relative terms based on the needs of an individual. This belief deems all actions as a means of survival.

That actually doesn't prove the existance of universal karma. Where is the correlation between him spreading negative rumours about you and much later on getting cancer? Besides, whether he deserved his fate or not is entirely dependant upon your point of view. I'm sure his family didn't think that he got what he deserved.

Karma's just an excuse for not thinking it through or being singled out for good or bad.

Once I walked at street at very cold day, I heard footsteps and pants rustle.. 20 seconds and I desided to slow down and person behind me did get pass. I started to walk behind that person and I walked loudly..
Next day I had cough and I was sick for more than 2 weeks..

I got lesson, now Im never gonna be that stupid..
