A month earlier I had seen the toy for the first time - a kid in the school playground transformed a mini cassette player into a robot, then ejected the cassette and turned it into a little robotic condor. My little mind was blown and I have been smitten by transforming robots ever since (bar a 15 year or so hiatus for puberty and partying, but even then I would keep an eye out for new versions of Soundwave).
I got back into drawing Transformers in the early 2000s and have been looking for an idea that redesigns Soundwave and co. in a modern way that reflects the musical connection, but a design avoiding the suspension of disbelief needed for mass displacement (i.e. a small music player transforming into a giant robot), and also an idea that could mimic Soundwave’s ability to ‘eject’ his minions from his chest compartment.
Back in 2017 I had the idea for a van that carries DJ equipment; CD mixers, speakers, sub woofers transforming into the condors, robots, and panthers that originally turned into cassettes, and have slowly been chipping away at the design, and 5 years later I have finally finished it.
Phew.
