Master List for Top 5 Best Transformers Lists (first post always updated)

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Good idea

Transformers prime Soundwave, la version beast Hunters...

I love transformers prime Soundwave. Good idea the drone.

But the repaint for the Beast hunters line is bad, too visible. A Drone should be furtif, and this one is not.

The weird thing about this one is : I don't like this repaint, but it is more accurate to a true wasp that the classical Waspinator... Fµ[|{ my logic ! :HEADHURTS:

The one about repaints that ruined great toys is really interesting. I had not thought of it. Could you give me an example to get a sense of what the list would look like?

Universe Snow Cat? He looks pretty cool in his proper deco but dear lord the black and orange is HIDEOUS. Also a lot of Club releases (largely due to horrendously bad headsculpts admittedly).

Classy.

If you're taking suggestions, I'd like to offer up a "Top 5 Best Bromances" as one. Like... Megatron and Rodimus, for example.

I finally updated that first post.

The bromance is interesting but if there is one thing I have figed out writing these lists is that nothing is straight forward or as simple as we think. With the recent fiction bringing in the idea of a soul mate, should/can/do we seperate that from a bromance? Megatron and Rodimus is a bromance and so is Drift and Rodimus, but is Cyclonus and Tailgate?

I think what could be cool (and Kurona or D-Max could help be out here, you could too, Amelie), is instead make a list fo the top 5 relationships in MTMTE/Lost Light which would include bromance and the more serious kind. What do you guys think?

Another question to whoever gets notifications for this thread, there are many lists I wrote 3 years ago when stocking up on this that dont hold up or dont really work as well. I have a top 5 best disguised Transformers toys that I am not sure holds up, like at all. MP Grimlock was number 1 because I felt his dino mode looked like a cool toy on its own and didnt seem to transform into a robot. But I dont think others would feel that way. So I am asking youguys this, which TF toys from the past do you feel dont look like they transform into robots?

Ooh, that's a tough one. I'd be tempted to put MP-03 Starscream on there as it really does look like a model F-15 unless you really scrutinize it. Other "Looks just like the real vehicle/object" figures... 2007 Leader Brawl, aside from his errant head hole, looks almost exactly like his movie vehicle mode prop. Some (but not all) MP cars are very convincing replicas of the real-world vehicles unless you look at them from very particular angles. G1 Megatron, aside from his colours, is a surprisingly convincing Walther P38.

In terms of "Look like nontransforming vehicle/beast toys even if they aren't real-world vehicles", I can think of a few. ROTF Rampage looks a lot like a little toy bulldozer, with most of his robot bits hidden and his treads looking like they can move (even though they can't). The ROTF line in general had a lot of "Wait, that transforms?!?" figures- Long Haul again looks like a nontransforming dump truck toy (and a damn good one at that), Mindwipe looks from the top at least like a fancily decorated generic stealth jet, and a lot of the carformers from the line had such good vehicle shells that were it not for a few errant panel lines they look exceptionally convincing- even the ones that aren't licensed! Animated had some great disguises, particularly IMO Lockdown (who looks just like a toy car) and Prowl (who is a miracle of engineering in general from what I understand). For a retro example, G1 Cyclonus has one hell of an impressive space jet mode, even if his robot mode is pretty dated. It actually had a better, smoother jet mode than the Universe 2.0 mold IMO.

Interesting, I had not thought of any of those, since they all have some kind of robot pieces showing in undercarriage (except for Prowl, who is a wonder of engineering and g1 Megatron who is totally on the list). I was thinking more along the lines of Longview, or G1 rewind (both G1 blaster and Soundwave have exposed heads, which kind of hurts their disguise plus Soundwave doesnt transform into anything that ever actually existed). Deadlift would be a good example too, I think.

Cyclonus and Tailgate is most certainly not just a friendship, no. It's explicitly romantic in nature and I'd be wary of calling anything in IDW a 'bromance' as such due to the fact that any close relationship in the comic can legitimately be a potential romance. If you're gonna do that sort of list I'd say it's best to keep it to any continuity other than IDW G1 due to how differently the latter is built and made from the others.

As for the other topic... hm. It's a difficult one to judge since I don't have many older Transformers outside of a few remaining Unicron Trilogy guys I still have and Universe Cyclonus... just from a glance Universe Hound looks to me like it wouldn't transform until you go under it. To me any vehicle with a cockpit/inner area that isn't just a bunch of robot parts mashed in there is fodder for this. Alternators go!

Oh dont worry about that, Alternators grimlock is the number 1 best disguised robot, no argument. Hes the only car mold to actually have a whole piece dedicated to the bottom.

G1 Megatron should be on that list. No argument. In alt-mode, that toy is brilliantly disguised. Even the panel lines aren't even that many and from basically all angles just looks like a rather nice toy gun.

And top 5 "relationships" sounds like it'd be a rather awesome list. :)

Top 5 or 10 Relationships

I like it. I think that works well. I would look forward to that list. I am good with it limited to IDW or all of Transformers.

Here is a question. Is it only top “positive” relationships? Last week we enjoyed top 5 rivalries. Someone suggested Megatron and Starscream, and that worked well there. But, those two would also work in top relationships. Their dynamic is like the Sith rule of two. Do they hate each other, respect each other, appreciate each other, all of the above, some or none.

Black Arachnia and Silverbolt.

Scourge and Optimus (Cybertron)

I will take a look when I get a chance, but most of my Transformers are in robot mode right now.

WJ, if you feel that your lists are outdated and that some need more than some minor adjustments, I would still be interested in seeing them in their original state. I would love for you to post them, and hopefully people would see your disclaimer saying “this list is 3 years old and would be update. Just releasing the old version for interest and discussion.”

People might actually help with your work. Like: “this new version is so much better.”

Thanks as always.

Thats very kind of you. In that case, i could post the ones I am working on here and anyone who wants to help out or give an input can help.

Here is the best disguised list as it is right now, for example:

I made a list of the Transformers toys which look least like the robot can transform into something else and this is pretty much the opposite. Transformers have always been called Robots in Disguise and some toys really pushed the disguise angle. There are some Transformers that one would never guess are anything more than their alt mode. Of course, the important factor here is that we are talking about their alt mode and not just a pretender shell that hides the robot. I am sure it was assumed, but I am mentioning it just in case. A brick wall would definitely help hide a small robot standing behind it, but what I give you today is the list of Transformers toys who's alt modes provide the best disguise!

5. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime

The big factor here that distinguishes this mold from other releases of the movie Peterbilt truck is the back of the cab section that removes any holes giving hint that this is more than just a truck. The view from the bottom gives nice symetrical pannels that hide the head and most of the robot kibble.

Image

4. Transformers G1 1984 Bumblebee (Bumble)

Most G1 figures are great examples of well disguised robots since the alt mode was the one that was emphasized in the two main lines contributing to Transformers. The idea was to have toy cars and real life objects that could blend in with others but also hide a robot. However, for the Diaclone cars at least, the illusion only lasted until you looked under the car and saw some flashy robot mode stickers. I wouldn't count the jets or Optimus Prime either since their robot mode kibble was detached and it wouldn't be a fair comparison. The most well disguised traditional G1 figure to me then ends up being good old Bumblebee. The head flap being hidden by a tire detail is very smart and he is super clean underneath, aside from some sculpting for the fists (but its not emphasized in any way, helping the illusion). He just looks like your average little toy car that any kid from the previous decades would have a bunch of. It must have been awesome for kids in the 80s to show their friends that theirs actually turned into a robot.

Image

Image

Image

3. TIE Between Transformers Masterpiece Megatron (MP-05) and Transformers Classics Megatron

There is not one single angle or part that would make anyone think this is more than a kid's toy gun. There is even a crosshairs in the scope and the trigger gives a satisfying click. The main reason it's not higher is due to the less realistic nature of this alt mode and the fact that though they are purposed differently, you can still make out the legs.

Image
Image

As for Masterpiece Megatron, it is such a convincing alt mode that you needed a gun replica permit to own one in Australia. It's scope was a bit too big for the gun though, ruining a bit of the illusion.

Image
Image

2. Transformers Alternators Grimlock

The alternators series brought it back to the G1 days where autobot cars had interactive and somewhat detailed cockpits, and were meant to resemble other toy cars. This series went for that very same idea, having alt modes that resembled licensed car models perfectly, with visible motors, detailed dashboards, opening doors, everything you'd expect from a high quality model car. Except it also transfomred into a robot. The alternators are all great replicas of licensed cars but the mustang model went an extra mile by having an entire piece cover the bottom to give extra detail and hide more of the robot. This gives the robot a whole lot of shell but also an amazing disguise. No one can guess this guy Transforms unless they know exactly what kind of toy it is.

1. Transformers Masterpiece Grimlock (MP-08)

Yup, another grimlock, making this list pretty much Grimlock, Megatron and Optimus, but I wouldnt have it any other way. It only makes sense that the most iconic charcters have some of the most interesting and awesome toys on the market. But Grimlock is indeed King. The reason is because this toys defies everything else really. Someone knowing you like transformers would assume any car you present them, or is spotted in your home, transforms. You also would probably have them in robot mode if taken out of their nice boxes. BUT this guy is a whole other story. In fact my brother commented on how awesome my Mecha Godzilla toy was when he saw my MP Grimlock on my shelf. Speak of an amazingly disguised robot. Unlike any of the others on this list, this toy in alt mode looks complete and accomplished, with the idea that this toy would sell as a non transforming seperate entity to the Transformers brand. It is functional with it's own gimmicks and is probably kept even more in this mode than the robot mode. Unlike the G1, you can't even spot his robot hands under his feet, the robot is fully hidden (in plain sight too!). His amazing, detailed and unique alt mode distracts anyone from thinking that it can also transform into a robot, making this my #1 pick.

Great list WJ. Thanks for posting, fun to read. I definitely see your concern, since three years can really make a difference.

I don’t think this forum gets enough traffic.

I think you should take this one down and post it on a Saturday in the normal spot. It is fun, holds up, and is the perfect complement to the opposite list.

You might be right that you would write a different list today, and you may get some responses that question your choices (but when don’t you), and suggest newer toys.

You wrote: “So I am asking you guys this, which TF toys from the past do you feel dont look like they transform into robots?”

From my collection I thought these worked well, (but I don’t have a good overall look at Transformers right now):

Lugnut

Gen whirl

Cryotech

I would still love to see old lists in the normal spot, with a disclaimer that they are 3 years old. Unless for sure you know that you are excited to redo/reedit a particular list.

Like you say, these lists aren't to debate or argue, they are to share personal preferences and love for toys. I would read the same list two years apart with a new edit.

Thanks for your time

No problem man. I will combine both ideas together: I will re-edit when I feel like it (like adding g1 Megatron and switching Grimlocks in the list above) and put the ones that are now no longer on the list as honourable mentions :) And I will keep writing in this thread asking for advice if ever I am stuck.

There should be a list about Bayverse figures we still need, such as a leader class Ratchet and Blackout, a proper deluxe Dino and so on. I'm still hoping that one day they will release a Ratchet leader, even though he is dead now

While it's maybe not exactly what you want, the MPM line might grant that wish to some degree :)

Actually, here's an idea for a list: Top 5 (or 10) weird but cool Transformers. Contenders might be Movie Bonecrusher, BWN Sabreback (or any of the BWN Destrons really), lots of the ROTF figures (with Brimstone, Mixmaster and dare I say it Rampage being possible contenders), some of the cooler BM figures...I dunno, just a thought.

I have been battling with that idea for a long time. Trying to find the right angle. I have a list of top 5 random but awesome inclusion in toy lines but the problem is that what I find random isnt what someone else might find random. Subjectivity is already part of choosing which toys go on a list, and thats fine, but the meaning of the list shouldnt be open to interpretation or else no one can counter, or argue, correctly. Even making a list on gimicks made an assumption as to what is considered a gimick and that discussion ended up just being arguing about the term rather than which toys should be on it.

Even D-Max with his list of characters switching sides got bogged down with people defining what it means to switch a side (is it changing your insignia, going against their values or something else?).

My lesson learnt is that I need something specific. Weird but cool and even random is very subjective. I dont even find the examples you list to be so weird since they are all similar to the aesthetic of the rest of their corresponding lines.

Yeah, that would be an easy list to do, thanks for the tip!

That's a good point actually. Hadn't thought of that.

That said, how about "Top 5/10 creepiest/scariest looking Transformers toys"? Whilst still a little subjective, it's definitely more clear-cut than simple "weirdness".

See, now we are getting warmer. Scariest/creepiest works well but it has to be different from this list https://www.seibertron.com/transformers ... oys/34157/

You could always just go for the whole "here are 5/10 Transformers I personally find bizarre but awesome" angle and say it's not necessarily the best ones, but just your personal feelings - why not have something that's not trying to have a discussion on what you find to be the best of a particular category, but just discussing that category and seeing what different people feel fits into it? I think it'd be a pretty fun diversion from the normal lists.

Yep, definitely. I'd say that a "scary/creepy" list would be more of a "positive" list than the Ugliest Toys list, in the sense that the toys in question look cool in addition to being frightening. So for example, ROTF Mindwipe and Skystalker are both pretty creepy- Mindwipe with his spiky skeletal vampire cultist look and soul-chilling visage, and Skystalker has that interesting, almost avian/corvid look and a sinister mono-eye (mono-eyes almost always look at least a little bit intimidating mind you). Both are awesome toys, and they both look rather spooky.

Of course, even if a toy isn't actually that great as a toy, if it LOOKS the part I think it qualifies. As you pointed out to me, for example, Energon Mirage is a bit of a fiddly nightmare as a toy, but he looks pretty damn cool.

TLDR: The toys are ones you'd actually want in your collection, and look sinister rather than stupid.

Other contenders I can think of for such a list...

BW Transquito: Not only does he turn into an absolutely murderous looking mosquito (fun fact: mosquito-transmitted malaria has killed more people than anything else in history) AND a razor-jawed antlion, but his robot mode is nothing short of horrific. That Predator-face...Brrrr.

BM Night Viper: For a "good guy" this dude is rather creepy. He's a snake for a start, with a surprising degree of articulation for such an unusual beast mode. Transform him to robot mode and he looks like a nightmarish, Gigeresque, inhuman monster of a figure with lanky, skeletal proportions, a chilling, gaunt facesculpt, and legs that thanks to the snake mode can move in ways legs should not.

DOTM Shockwave: I'm very biased towards this figure, I'll admit, but still there's little doubt he's pretty imposing. He eschews the usual G1 Shockwave screen-chest in favour of a sort of ribcage, and combined with the dark purple colourscheme, a scythe-like reaping arm blade, and a seriously scary face complete with Tarantulas-esque maw and a chillingly well lightpiped mono-eye, he resembles a sort of robotic grim reaper.

DOTM Crankcase: I know we've gotten Berserker since, but I feel Crankcase is the better looking figure. Creepy, skeletal hands with raking talons (provided they haven't been snipped in the factory)? Check. Hugely alien, bestial looking robot mode with blatant Predator head (albeit with 4 eyes) and rippling robot musculature? Check. Weird proportions with long, grasping arms? Check. Transforms into a secret service black SUV? Check, check and check. The Dreads were awesome designs and I wish they'd gotten to do more in the movie.
