Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (2010)

Postby Sabrblade » Sun Jan 03, 2010 8:21 pm

Motto: "Can't do a job halfway. What's worth doing is worth doing well, I say."
Weapon: Saber Blade
Well, yesterday the first two episodes of the 2010 rebroadcast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired on ABC Kids. I was interested in seeing how they'd air the old show, and was kinda wanting to see it since I missed it during its initial run in the early 90s (I saw a good amount of it via "Power Playback", "Best of Power Rangers", and "Power Ranger Generations" reruns, though).

When I watched them, however, I was disappointed to see that they added in new flashy special effects (in the style of those seen in "Transformers: Generation 2" and the DiC dub of "Sailor Moon") to these versions of the episodes. If the addition of these effects was revealed previously, then forgive me for I haven't been keeping up with Power Rangers news.

I didn't rewatch the originals to compare them exactly, but I'll mention what changes I did notice.
*SPOILERS WARNING*

Opening sequence changes:
  • The theme song remained unchanged song-wise, but the logo was the newer one seen on the toy packaging (yet all the ABC Kids ads use the old logo)
  • A flash aura effect was added to Rita's emergence from the dumpster
  • The whole opening sequence had added and altered special effects
General changes:
  • The "Today on Power Rangers" segment used the 2010 logo
  • New commercial bumpers added in
  • The morphing sequence had a brand new lightning bolt effect at its beginning
  • Some lame "Adam West 60s Batman"-style word effects were added in here and there
  • Each zord had its name and ranger stated at the bottom of the screen when they appeared
  • The Megazord's Tank Mode had its name appear as well (surprisingly the Megazord's name for its normal robot mode did not appear, go figure)
  • Images of each Ranger's Power Coin logo were added to each moment of them combining their weapons to form the Power Blaster.
  • The Power Blaster firing sequence repeated several shots when it fired.
  • The end credits started playing during the episode (like they did with RPM)
  • The final shot of the episode was frozen with more effects
  • Various other special effects were added in
In the first episode,
  • Rita's emergence had the above-mentioned change
  • A series of panels were inserted over the Earth to name and identify each of Rita's minions
  • The video frames "spun around" during Jason's Tornado kick
  • The picture "shook" during Bulk's fall shortly after
  • During the unmorphed Putty fight, some "60s Batman"-style word effects were added in
  • The Rangers's "dynamic pose" had a sunrise background added to it
  • (Not sure if this is new, but) a rain cloud and falling rain were put over where the Putties appear next to Goldar
  • The individual poses of each Ranger had auras and a unique background added to each of them (Red - circular stripes and some white "fuzz"; Black - circular stripes and some white "patches"; Blue - circular stripes and two shooting stars; Yellow - huge red "patches" and several arrows; Pink - three hearts)
"Teleport to us five overbearing and over-emotional humans." "No! Not that! Not teenagers!" - 90s classic cheese.

Jason said "Hold on!" as if he knew they were gonna teleport. :?

And I'd forgotten just how much Jason sounds like the English dub version of Takuya from Digimon Frontier (or maybe that should be the other way around, considering which came first).

In episode 2,
  • Jason's "crotch fall" on Billy had a "Bonk!" placed over it (censorship?)
  • The swinging of the two boys had a "Woosh" added to it
  • A lightning bolt background was added to Skull's line "You sayin' that Bulk can't do it?" to Jason
  • The screen shook on Bulk's two failed attempts to climb the rope
  • A blue border was added to Rita's telescope circle showing what she was going to have her monster do to the Rangers (actually, I think this whole scene might've been new, as it seemed out of place and acted like/was used as a commercial bumper)
  • (Again, not sure if this is new, but) the view from the mini space shuttle had the words "Find Power Rangers" on it
  • More 60s Batman effects during the unmorphed Putty fight
  • A "Zzzzing" was added to the "human chain" spin
  • Colored streaks were added to each Ranger's quick poses and their final five-Ranger pose
  • Streaks and a background were added to the Blade Blaster preparation
"This is morphinonemal." - Oh, so it was Kimberly who coined that odd word.

"Oh. Welcome homeboys; homegirls. What brings you to the hood?" - Alpha 5 and 80s street slang do NOT mix.

Billy's first scream at the cliff sounded so fake.
*END OF SPOILERS*

Overall, it was nice to see the classic characters back on the air, but all the changes were a bit distracting.

Wasn't bothered by the changes really. The show was cheesy enough to begin with so adding the few things they did would make little difference in that regard. My only problem is how long it will take to get through the first season with only two episodes a week. I would have liked to see them put it on Disney XD to help speed it along.

I actually really liked it when it showed in the 90s. With that said, it was quickly banned. Just after the introduction of the Green fella.
Something memorable here.

meh

Honestly I wasn't a huge fan during the first run, but I did watch a bit of it, then i didn't watch a single episode until about 4 months ago when with nothing else on I watched an episode on RPM which surprised because I enjoyed it, and was willing to look back at others, but when I saw that ABC was ending the reshoot line and going back to the original English series, I figured that would happen.

So personally, I'm just going to finish grabbing the RPM episodes, and leave it at that. hopefully if the show does do well they will reopen production, but i am quite doubtful that will happen.

Why bother making these changes in the first place?

I mean, I get the use of the new logo and the updated CGI, but everything else seems completely unnecessary.

*SPOILERS WARNING*

In episode 3:
  • They REALLY messed up the beginning. Instead of showing the normal "Today on Power Rangers" segment, they played parts of the first scene of the first episode where Rita and her minions are freed by the astronauts. What?!!
  • A flipping "FLIP!" was added to Kimberly's flip.
  • A "SMOOSH" and a shaking screen were added to Bulk and Skull's colliding into/"hugging" each other.
  • A splitting "Split!" was added to Trini's moves against the Putties.
  • A stretching "YANK!" was added to Kimberly being grabbed by a Putty.
  • A "STUFFED!" was placed over the two Putties getting knocked into the barrels by the girls.
  • A heart and arrow background was placed behind the Pink and Yellow Rangers' poses.
  • (Not sure if this is new, but) a page-turning transition was used for the scene where Red was contacting Yellow and Pink to call for their zords to fight the giant monster
  • (Again, not sure if this is new, but) the Rangers were glowing white and had white lines circling them as they teleported out of their Megazord Tank Mode and back to the Commend Center
  • Two "GO!"s were placed in the Rangers' battle pose. One "GO!" was place above them, and the other was below them (this image is seen in the modified opening theme).
  • (Once Again, not sure if this is new, but) Red's sword was glowing blue and emitting yellow sparklies as Zordon telepathically told them to combine the weapons.
And I don't know what happened after the last commercial break as the station cut off the episode at this point. But the next episode played fine.

In episode 4:
  • The "Today on Power Rangers" segment correctly played this time.
  • A star with a ripping "RIIIIIP!" was placed over Bulk's pants tearing in the rear (Censorship?)
  • A shaking screen was added to Bulk falling down after Skull runs off
  • Ranger-colored lines and images of their Zords were added to the Red, Black, and Pink Rangers jumping in the air immediately after their morphs occurred
  • A sun background was added to the "pre-Megazord" (the form without the Pterodactyl chest plate attached and with the Tyrannosaurus head still up) standing up (this was also seen in the new opening sequence)
  • A "TRIP!" and a "SPLAT" were added to Bulk's tripping and landing into the cake.
Why on Earth is Alpha holding a plush toy?!!

The Power Crystals seem different when they appear in the Commend Center scenes. Were their glowing effects changed? (and weren't they already seen in the Zyuranger Megazord footage back in episode 1?).

And how does Jason even know about them and about Zordon sending them to him when he never heard Zordon even speak of them?

And if this Megazord battle seem familiar, it should because it was from this Zyuranger episode that footage of the Daizyujin vs. Grifforzer & Dora Sphinx battle was used for the Megazord vs. Goldar battle in the first episode, but had all footage of Dora Sphinx/King Sphinx edited out. Which is why Goldar merely retreated once the Megazord's sword was summoned (the footage of the Megazord actually using the sword was cut due to it being used against Dora Sphinx/King Sphinx). Though, I gotta admit, despite this shows cheesiness, this was one of the more exciting Zord battles that I've seen.

:BOT: Ya know, when I saw the new toys in the stores I felt like an 9 year old all over again. I have the original Zords yet I wanted to buy these new ones. I love the gimmick of adding extra armor on them. Obviously they're not in the show but being a robot fanatic, they're pretty cool!

Might pass on buying the Zords but I am considering the new 4 inch figures. We finally have toys that visually represent their television counterparts. Most notably, female Rangers figures look like women  :CON:

*SPOILERS WARNING*

In episode 5:
  • A bouncing yellow "KLUTZ" was added to Billy tripping and falling onto the cart (isn't that kind of an insult to his character?)
  • Another star with a splitting "RIIIIIP!" was placed over Bulk getting stuck doing a split (are they gonna start recycling these effects?).
  • A huge "FLIP!" was added to Zack's countertop handstand.
  • A falling "BOOM!" was added to Bulk overshooting the countertop.
  • A 'roadway-style' background was added to the Rangers' pose that occurs immediately after they morph.
  • The picture was frozen and a background was placed over the last image of Rita screaming before we see the... uh, very bizarre Blue Ranger breaking dancing commercial bumper.
It was extremely obvious in this episode that Rita's dialogue didn't match with Bandora's lip sync.

Rita complains about Kim's music. HOW is she able to hear that music from all the way on the Moon?!!

The Rangers' morphing calls were spoken differently in this episode. Each dino name was uttered more calmly and with less enthusiasm.

A few instances had the Pink Ranger colored gray instead of pink.

Everyone except the Red Ranger called their weapons by the wrong name:
  • The Power Axe was called the "Cosmic Cannon"
  • The Power Bow -> the "Battle Bow"
  • The Power Daggers -> the "Dino Daggers"
  • The Power Lance -> the "Mighty Mace" (Seriously!)
The lines "Megazord sequence has been initiated," and "Megazord activated!" were spoken much more clearly than normal in this episode.

So, what exactly was the point of the villains' plan in this episode? Hypnotize/kidnap a few girls and then make them dance inside a cave. Uh... why? :?

In episode 6:
  • A "Woosh!" was added to Mr. Kaplan's toupée getting knocked off by a thrown pie.
  • A background and the words "FOOD FIGHT!" were added to Skull's yelling of said words.
  • A recycled "SPLAT!" was placed over bulk dropping a pie on his face.
  • A "SPLASH!" was placed over Mr. Kaplan getting covered in punch.
  • An arrows background was added to the Yellow Ranger catching her vomited weapons.
  • A hearts background was added to the Pink Ranger catching her vomited weapon.
  • A mastodon background was added to the Black Ranger using his vomited weapon on the pig.
The Pudgy Pig's voice sounds like King Boo from the Mario games.

Too... many... pig... puns!

Other than one scene near the beginning, Rita hardly seems sick at all.

What, no Megazord fight? Well, I guess it's just as well, as I can't take much more of this episode.

It was like the for the entire series. Once they stopped using the Zyuranger footage for the main villains, she didn't suffer from the "Godzilla Effect."

It ironic the show is banned there yet quite a few PR shows have been filmed there.Hmm :-? Not sure on how many but Jungle Fury comes to mind. The yellow ranger was in Underbelly-Tale of 2 Cities and shows her ta tas alot. Feel free to look that up non Aussie and NZ users.
Sound like the "remastering" of the old show is crap. Have to look on Youtube methinks. Image. The pic is of myself and Johnny Boush (2nd black MMPR).

Yes, that would be pretty cool. All this talk of Power Rangers has me watching Zyuranger on Youtube. While I won't say Zyuranger is "better" so far, I still have a nastalgia for the Power Rangers characters. Plus I prefer the MMPR them, but Zyuranger is catchy, in an annoying kind of way....

This talk has also rekindled an old pining of mine: Dragonzord. I never had the figure as a kid, and I always wanted it. But I'm not about to spend upwards of $50(heck, that would be CHEAP) to get one. I've seen reviews, the figure kind of sucks when compared to even the most basic of Transformers these days. But it just looks so cool....

I hope they make a new one like they did the Megazord. Yes I'd have to get the new Megazord(I have the original) to make the Dragon Megazord, and possibly Titanus, but it would still be cheaper than getting an original.

That's kind of the appeal with Megazords, they're absolute bricks (the Super Zeo Megazord was at least able to bend its elbows, if I remember right), but they just look so damn cool, so you don't even think about the fact that they can't pose outside of "Offering a handshake" or "offering a fist bump" or "offering a hug".

Episode 6 was shown again this morning. There were no differences between it and last week's airing of the same episode. So, there's only one new episode to compare today.

*SPOILERS WARNING*

In episode 7:
  • AGAIN they messed up by showing the beginning footage of episode 1 at the start of this episode. But instead of playing it when the "Today on PR" segment should have played, they showed the segment, then played this wrong footage, and then started the theme song! Good grief!
  • A fire background and devil horns/goatee were added to the zoom pan on Maria, which also cut out a few milliseconds of the short of Kim and Trini saying her name (which was seen in full during the "Today on PR" segment)
  • A border was added to Rita saying, "Wait... I've got a plan!" which then lead into a new commercial bumper
  • A white wipe and skull designs were added to Rita and her minions teleporting to a cave with the Power Eggs chest in it. There was also a wolf's howl played here, but I don't know if it's new or not.
  • A "DUCK!" was placed over Kim pulling Maria down and away from a Putty.
  • A twisting "TWIST!" was added to Trini flipping a Putty onto the ground
  • A big smacking "KICK!" was placed over Kim's kick to a Putty's head, censoring it (yet, all the groin-kicking remained fully viewable)
  • This time, they played a new commercial bumper after the commercial break had ended instead of before it began.
  • A 'stellar' background with Rangers' five dino symbols was placed behind them in there first pose immediately after they morph.
  • Another background was placed behind their second pose just five seconds later.
Man, this episode's beginning was loaded with fanservice! From a shirtless sweaty Zack to about twelve guys wearing nothing but towels and soap suds, all within the first five minutes!

Rita: "I need special monster right away! One that can get his hands on a young brat. He needs to be ruthless and nasty, and mean. I want a Chunky Chicken!" --*groans* How can anyone take this woman's dialogue seriously?!!

Billy: "Well, why would Rita wanna kidnap a little kid?" --I was wondering the same thing back in episode 5.

So, why exactly were communication and teleportation "out for hours"?

Zordan's pronunciation of "Morphing Masters" sounds way too similar to "Morphine Masters".

How is the chicken guarding the girl at "the old factory" and fighting the Rangers in the wasteland with Goldar AT THE SAME TIME?!!

And, how did they insert Maria into Zyuranger footage? Was there another little girl there that she was made to look like?... I guess so, seeing as how, when the Megazord caught her, she turned into an Asian girl. Also, the Megazord catches her in its right hand, but in the very next shot, she's been replaced with its sword. And then a few seconds later, she's back and the sword is gone!

Since when do the newspeople actually know Rita's name and who she is? All they should know is that their city has been attacked by a few random (not "lethal") monsters for unexplained (to them) reasons. In fact, the Rangers didn't save the city/world today, just a little girl and some eggs. In fact, the news anchor claims that they cover all the latest Power Rangers news. Where are they getting all their info from?

What took Bulk and Skull so long to appear in this episode? They didn't even do anything except get chili dropped on Bulk's head.

Wow, there was a lot to complain/nitpick about in this episode. :P

Weapon: Switch Blade Tail
The show hit the airwaves when I was 13, and the first season wowed me. (What I could see of it. We didn't have cable, and our antenna was less than reliable. Fortunately, most of the episodes, including the Green With Evil miniseries, were available on VHS for rent.)

Enough to get me to like the toys, especially the Zords, I even liked the movie.

But as time went on, I found myself more and more into the toys and less and less into the show. (Last I remember, Serpentera was smashing a city or something, and I don't even know how the show got to that point, so yeah, I have no idea what really went on.)

By the time Zeo came around, I was completely disinterested in the toyline, and sold 'em all off at a garage sale. (Heh, jokes on me.)

So, color me surprised when RPM was not only good PR, but a good show, period. Got me to buy the toys, enjoy the show, etc.

I decided to give MMPR another go 'round with this revival (I.E. Disney making a quick buck with little to no cost) and even bought the Megazord (glad I did. It's awesome.)

...and then I saw the show. PURE crap. (That was before the "remaster" pieces came into play.)

The show was already horrible from the getgo, but this made it even worse. And I feel as though Disney did it on purpose. I mean it's too silly, too tacky, and reeks too much of "Here's a slap in the face for you!" to have it be anything but.

For months, people speculated what the remaster might provide. We expected updated special effects, better a/v quality, a new credits setup, etc.

What we got wasn't even close to what should be considered a remastering. It should be considered an offense to the fans, because it comes across as a very big STFU from Disney.

That's kind of weird, it ran on Fox Kids up until Wild Force, and Fox isn't cable.

That was the last series before this one, right? I've been hearing nothing but good things about it. I think I have to check it out.

Fox isn't cable, true. Around here, however, you either need an expensive antenna for OTA broadcasts, or cable to get it. (All the local channels are in the lineup)

The antenna was too expensive and too difficult to put up, and we couldn't afford cable at the time.

There's nothing weird about that, that's just life.

As for RPM: Yes, it definitely needs to be seen.

A computer virus takes over the world's machines, builds himself an empire and destroys 90% of the human race. The last 8% or so have been relocated into the domed city of Corinth, and what few remaining stragglers left outside the dome, were forced to either be slave labor for his factories, or became a part of his army of hybrids.

Dr. K (who had been a ward of the state, forcibly, since early childhood, in a bunker hidden from the outside world in a slavish think tank in a rather sad and twisted story) created the Ranger Series Operator suits, Zords, and weapons to combat Venjix's empire.

The premise is dark from the get go, and remains fairly dark throughout the entire series. I mean, the Black and Green Rangers end up in prison in the beginning. There's even a prison fight where a mobster's crew tries to take out the Green Ranger. One of the mobsters even gets burnt during the fight. (And yes, there are several run ins with the mob, throughout the series.) It's not all dark though, there are some very funny moments, and it's not forced humor either. The acting (outside of the Ranger suits) isn't over the top or silly. Of course, there's still a bit of cheese, there has to be, because it's Power Rangers, but those moments are really only when they're doing their voice overs for the Ranger scenes. (Can't blame the actors for that.)

The last four episodes of the series are can't miss television. The finale is definitely a jawdropper, and you almost forget that it's Power Rangers, while still being PR. It's that good.

I'm hoping that anyone who reads this is intrigued enough to give it a chance and watch it. Everyone I've talked into it, thanked me for it later.

OMG I also wanted the Dragon Zord And Green Ranger. Parents never bought it for me. I also wanted the dragon flute. Never knew a single kid who had it though :-?

I remember trying to find those toys during the first year. One Spring break, me and my brother were at our grandparents and we went to TRU to look for PR toys. We opted t trya waiting list figuring it was worht a try. he just opted for the Megazord (chances were slim of getting one.) We look around, our grandmother came abck and said it was in a big box. We didn't get what she emant until we went upt ehre and saw they had one that had beenr eserved but the person who reserved it did not come when called. So we got it by pure luck. The Megazord back then was $35.

The draognzord we found a year later when it was briefly brought back into circulation under a limited run, following the three-part green ranger episodes. And got that. Titanus was extreemly hard to find since there was still demand for him in season 3 when it returned. Was the only one we never got.

Looking back, I do agree that Dragonzord by itself was not much. You at least got a Green Ranger figure out of it. You only got the full playability out of it when you had the Megazord to allow the additional use of the Dragon Megazord and the Mega Dragonzord combo. However, the drill weapon sucked because the way the hands were molded would not allow the zord to handle it. You basically had to hold it and make stupid motions with the zord in the other hand like it was using it.

The problem was that Power Rangers was so popular that the waiting lists were ridiculously long, as you never really saw anything on the shalves until close to season 2 and by that point, the season 2 stuff had started to circulate. Thunderzords, for the first few months up to the preview event were plentiful and then became difficult to find, though somewhat easier. I recall the White Tigerzord being the hardest to find of the season 2 zords. Tor was commonplace since it only appeared in a few episodes.

I found the toys up in the attic a few eyars ago before my mom moved and didn't think to pull them out and hold onto them, especially the older zords and White Tigerzord. Surprisingly, the batteries we had inside Tor and the white Tigerzord still worked though Tor sounded like it had better days. The White Tigerzord's sounds and lights ran fine as it had been sitting inside Tor all those years. At least some kid was probably happy after getting the stuff from goodwill.

As for the series itself, looking abck, it wasn't that great. it was just something edited together with scenes that clearly did not fit. But as a kid, you didn't question this. You wanted to see your favorite ranger beat the badguy and watch the robots beat the bad guy, and in some cases, just wanted to sit and drool at the hotness of the pink ranger. I do agree that some of the recent series, after glancing through them, were better as there was definately some form of story continuity rather than it being episodic.

I know a good part of the backstory, but MY GOD this screams out "Terminator" so much John Conner might as well be the Red Ranger.
