MOTU

Do you collect other toys besides Transformers? Maybe you've got a Masters of the Universe collection you'd like to show off, or maybe you like Thundercats, Voltron, G.I.Joe, Power Rangers, Star Wars, Wrestling, or any of the various comic book toy lines. Please keep the discussions here to non-Transformers toy lines.

Just finished Revelations. It's... different, and really going to piss off some purists. Remember the opening to Transformers the Movie? It's not quite that scale and it take five episodes, but it certainly isn't going to make your inner child happy.

Animation was good, character designs and art is a little hit or miss sometimes, music had that '80s cartoon quality to it. I loved seeing the toy packaging backer card art (the red rocks) used in the first episode opening, that was a nice touch. it was fun watching the vehicles going around and I really like how a few scenes were staged like a big toy battle. Story wise, I'm not sure if this was really something we needed. I don't think anyone was asking for some soul searching story where Teela (yes, she is the main character) gets angsty and feels betrayed by all the secrets around her, but for what it is it's alright.

The humor does fall pretty flat, but intentionally so. Very groan inducing, but in an ironic sense, you're supposed to groan at the jokes like you would watching any '80s cartoon.

I will say this, the lesbian angle wasn't there like a lot of people said it would be, there was some chemistry between Teela and Adam so there was no drastic(?) character change there.

I'll give it a solid B. It's mostly fun, but also leaves you with a few unnecessary gut punches. Also ends on a cliffhanger that we all saw coming because they launched the toy line with a figure for it.

Honestly I'm still not going to watch it, I'd rather start new adventures or rewatch 200x. I plan to pick up netflix SHERA if it gets a physical release (even if the ending was a big let down for me and Shera will always be into guys for me haha). I can't find a release date for the new heman cartoon as everything seems to be revelations promotions at the mo.

The figure line is a nice alternative though and even if I'm only going to pick a few up they will be easier to get than mythic legions figures. Maybe not Scareglow though as it looks like it sold out instantaneously.

My thoughts on the first 5 episodes of Revelation are mixed to be sure. The animation, and acting are amazingly well done, no criticisms there (even if some people cant separate Hamill's Joker from Skeletor, I'm ok with it).

What happens in the overall plot and story, and where it ends up, I'm ok with as well. I just think the journey to get there was a little to critical, and deconstructive. The trope of a Hero's secret identity reveal in pop culture is not a new idea, and also what happens when loved ones find out also isn't knew. Some in the past have understood, some have been disappointed, but in time understood. Then of course you can go full butthurt, which I think this series almost did... There is a desperate attempt to course correct, which is nice, but I think it just went a little too far in some aspects, despite coming back around towards the end.

This series was definitely written by people who appreciate MOTU lore (NOT Kevin Smith), but it reeks like Stinkor of Netflix PC notes to try to force something that did not exist originally in MOTU.

Oddly enough, a few notes form the 1987 MOTU film make their way into the episodes as well. The deaths I am ok with actually, and the last Biggest one, I'm sure will not be permanent. If anything, I jus hope fans online really use this as an opportunity to promote the 2002 MOTU series. IN truth, all the buzz of this Netflix series has generated more general awareness of the Brand than the 2002 series ever did, just because of the money behind it.

Basically all you need to know is Kevin Smith is full of crap, and while this NEW 5 episodes are a nice appetizer, there is a whole 39 episode series from 2002 that all MOTU fans should go back and enjoy, because it really is amazing.

Some notes- In addition to everything shown in the trailers, there are still a few more cool toy/character appearances (Bionatops and Blast-Attack are cool little nods). However, at times, it almost felt like the writers an animators had all the toys, and just played with them at random. Bashasaurus was a heroic vehicle, not an evil one. Also IU always associated Blast-Attack as a robot created by the Snake Men...Or is my memory off on that?

Interesting. I wouldn't know of any retcons since I don't collect new product, but in the original mini-comic (Revenge of the Snake men, I just read it again after posting) he was built by the Snake Men. Oddly enough, while I prefer Sunbow Animated series as the "primary" continuity for Transformers, I prefer the 80's mini-comics for MOTU over the Filmation series, simply because they were able to include more characters. That's not to say I don't like the Filmation series, it is just not my go-to for trivia about MOTU.

Apparently everything that was represented in the Classics line received a new bio via Mattel. Seems akin to the Aligned model.

Quakke is looking nice.

Only revelation design I'm not keen on that I've seen at the mo is Beastman, the shaved look is just weird but I'm guessing it's just so they could cheap out and not have to animate/draw fur.
That or he did something and it's the equivalent of skeletor shaving Beastman eyebrows off in his sleep.

well sadly wave 8 wwe motu is the last which means I'll have to sustomise twobads into bushwackers and nasty boys :( and get wave 7s Brett.

wav8 is Chyna *YAY!), trapjaw stonecold (looks good but a stonecold comes with a ring) and another rey mysterio as stratos (whcih fair enough I'll try getting over the other Rey Mysterio but I'd have preffered Koko B ware and some actual effort for the last wave :( )

Agreed. So many are comparing Netflix MOTU to The Last Jedi, which I guess makes NA kind of like the Star Wars Prequels in that, it was hated for a long time, but all that is forgotten now.

It's unfortunate. As I said in my initial review, the Animation is amazing, as is the acting. I am probably more merciful than most regarding the story, as, while it is not personally what I would have liked to have seen, I'd probably give it a 4/10 on it's own. It is unfortunately all the controversy surrounding Kevin Smith that has basically killed this series. I imagine the last 5 episodes will arrive on Netflix with little to no promotion in the next few months, and as for a continuation...absolutely 0% chance of that.

I also wonder how it will effect the other MOTU series? Will that get scrapped because of this, even though it was intended for an entirely different audience?

All I can do is basically the same thing I've been doing. On every one of those youtube videos that is contributing to the backlash, instead of feeding the beast of Negativity, I tell people-Go watch the 2002 series. I would love it if nothing else, that seemingly forgotten show got a push as a result of what is going on now.

oh yeah speaking of toys, I stated a while back, I haven't seen any of these at any stores (not sure if they are selling well, or just very limited), but I did manage to see one lone Skelegod toy on an endcap at Target. I think it was intended to promote the whole line, but that was the only toy on the whole endcap .

well that's not quite true..all the tags were for MOTU, but some employee had filled some of the pegs with Jurassic World merch because I think they didn't know where to put it.

I know exactly why they hid (ugly) Teela until a later wave but yeah, Moss Man is barely in it...Makes no sense.

As long as there is some nice toys I'm not too fussed if Revelations sucks but it is a shame when none of the other toons have (although I havent watched NA yet but still I have higher expectatitions of it than revelations).

I'm waiting on next wave of origins which is the whole wave for me, 3 x mosquitors (two to customise, I want a netflix sgera Kyle and lizzard guy even if scales out), rvelations mossman (I think it might be nicer than mythic legions) and maybe the same some revelations stinkor (which if it stinks is an insta buy) but I'm thinking only the origins figure will feature the smell (and then I'll end up getting an origins mossman anyway if that smells).

Here's the first episode.
It is one of those series that managed to get onto YouTube and Mattel doesn't seem to care.

Rumors abound for origins movie heman and skeletor. One step closer to getting William stout figures :p

I watched the first episode of new adventures, other than skeletor suffering a personality disorder over time since the original (but he's an interesting approach) and hemans voice being a bit dodgy it was okay to good. Still borrowing heavily from Conan/kull with him being summoned to the future near enough. Never a bad thing. Mutants were okay, I get a minority report/total recall/flash gordonesque vibe from it so will definitely watch more. Interested me to see the aged snake mountain still on primus and I didn't think Adam was still around as I thought NA he was perma he-man.

As mentioned before, it was the Flash Gordon vibe that got me into NA. It is the overall aesthetic of NA, wherein it starts to forge it's own unique identity.
Now as much as I love Campbell Lane as Skeletor, I'm less fond of Garry Chalk as He-Man. The Adam thing is strange. I think it is a holdover from when this was originally intended to be He-Ro's show. But just you wait til you see how the show handles the Power Sword...

Meanwhile, a favour to anyone that has the MOTU toy book. Could you just put my curiosity at ease and let me know if Classic Hoove is listed please?

Many thanks! ;)^

Just had a deep dive into the He-man.org forums. A lot of people were pretty annoyed that NA was left like it was in the Classics line. Considering how many "nobodies" for the Filmation series made the cut, over characters that actually had vintage toys.

Image

The NA aesthetic looks even better with more modern art, too.

Just to be annoying the toy book has stuff out of alphabetical order (point dread for one) and no index of figures by page but I still don't think there is a hoove. Also in pretty sure the 80s Shera is missing some stuff.

Smyths has had a slight price increase on revelations figures at £25 (though skeletor is still showing as £23 on the website unlike the in store price).

Sadly Mattel has hasbrod and deluxes are upto voyager prices... I mean standard figures are up to deluxe prices.

£15 now £18 standard figures
Deluxes dunno (but I don't feel as bad paying £20 for buzz saw hordak now)
Revelations basics £23 now £25
Cats £25 now £27
Vehicles £30 now £33

Target in my area has sky sleds and battle cat (but not Panthor oddly enough) on clearance, and after looking at someone's post from fully stocked shelves in Canada (see below), I can't believe how many toys in the Classics line actually exist! Most of them I'm pretty sure haven't even made it to retail in the U.S. Clamp Champ? Landshark? I had no idea!

Nearly complete...

Crita1.jpg

Crita2.jpg

New Adventures toy designers: "If we release a Crita figure, the entire Space Mutants line will be complete."
80's - 90's Mattel Exec's: "Girl figures in a boys line? Ewwwww"

I'm guessing this was the general gist.

So here we finally have a Crita figure, circa 2016, from the Classics line. With possibly one of the worst design choices I've seen on an action figure.
You'll note in the pics above a cape. This is permanently attached to her forearms. It has next to zero give - it is soft plastic, not cloth - and basically because of this, her arms do not move. One arm can, at the expense of the other. It is such a baffling decision that I don't know how it passed QA. Overall the aesthetic is spot on. As is the colour palette. The accessories are all fine but hindered due to the articulation hinderance. The whip can't be properly posed and the gun strap can't even go over her head. She is basically a statue compared to the others. Just a very weird figure, that didn't need to be.
