- Motto: "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes"
My thoughts on the first 5 episodes of Revelation are mixed to be sure. The animation, and acting are amazingly well done, no criticisms there (even if some people cant separate Hamill's Joker from Skeletor, I'm ok with it).
What happens in the overall plot and story, and where it ends up, I'm ok with as well. I just think the journey to get there was a little to critical, and deconstructive. The trope of a Hero's secret identity reveal in pop culture is not a new idea, and also what happens when loved ones find out also isn't knew. Some in the past have understood, some have been disappointed, but in time understood. Then of course you can go full butthurt, which I think this series almost did... There is a desperate attempt to course correct, which is nice, but I think it just went a little too far in some aspects, despite coming back around towards the end.
This series was definitely written by people who appreciate MOTU lore (NOT Kevin Smith), but it reeks like Stinkor of Netflix PC notes to try to force something that did not exist originally in MOTU.
Oddly enough, a few notes form the 1987 MOTU film make their way into the episodes as well. The deaths I am ok with actually, and the last Biggest one, I'm sure will not be permanent. If anything, I jus hope fans online really use this as an opportunity to promote the 2002 MOTU series. IN truth, all the buzz of this Netflix series has generated more general awareness of the Brand than the 2002 series ever did, just because of the money behind it.
Basically all you need to know is Kevin Smith is full of crap, and while this NEW 5 episodes are a nice appetizer, there is a whole 39 episode series from 2002 that all MOTU fans should go back and enjoy, because it really is amazing.
Some notes- In addition to everything shown in the trailers, there are still a few more cool toy/character appearances (Bionatops and Blast-Attack are cool little nods). However, at times, it almost felt like the writers an animators had all the toys, and just played with them at random. Bashasaurus was a heroic vehicle, not an evil one. Also IU always associated Blast-Attack as a robot created by the Snake Men...Or is my memory off on that?
