Movies & TV reviews and suggestions thread

Hey-ho friends!

A while back I had a similar thread on here, but I'm no necrobumper, that's Rodimus' job.

I'll review movies and television as I encounter it, I invite the lot of you to do the same, I ask that there be no flaming arguments over films, however constructive conversation is welcomed.

So I went to see The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies on Monday. It wasn't really all that good. Honestly, it's ironic that Desolation of Smaug has no desolation of Smaug in it, yet Battle of Five Armies has almost nothing but battle. It was almost boring after a while with all the fighting that you've already seen in Return of the King. Plus, the CGI orcs ruin the reality of the fight scenes. Martin Freeman barely had any screen time, the other dwarves were pretty much background fodder and the Sauron part was solved way to easily.

All and all

For TV, Jonathan Creek, a new favorite of mine. A murder mystery series from England that revolves around a illusionist expert and a writer as they try to solve the most impossible crimes imaginable. Brilliantly written, especially on behalf of the title character, played by the hilarious Alan Davies. The mysteries are fascinating and refreshing after years of watching crime shows deal with typical murders. Sometimes it can be a bit slow though, and the writer can be extremely abrasive.

I got to see Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb tonight. WAY better then the second one in my opinion. The original cast shone, although I'd have liked to see more from Sacagawea and Attila. Lancelot was a hilarious addition and from my personal experience in the British museum it made the movie all the more magical. You can really see the sadness in Robin Williams' eyes during the last scene in the movie, I know I felt more then a few tears well up during it. The ending was nice but I felt there could've been slightly more creative energy in the finale. The cameo roles of Hugh Jackman and Alice Eve were absolutely hilarious, shows that Hugh Jackman can actually laugh at himself, something rare in actors these days. The overall feeling of the movie is nostalgic, making you want to go back and watch the other two ASAP. A great sendoff for Robin Williams.

Definitely worth seeing, I can say wholeheartedly, probably the best movie I've seen in 2015 thus far.

I have seen it as well, and liked it. I wouldn't give it more than a 6 out of 10, but it was funny in the right parts, I guess. Yes, Lancelot was hilariously douche-y, and Jackman's scene was great. Of course, it's always good to see Alice Eve on screen, she doesn't even have to speak. (Not that she's a bad actress.) My favorite was Rebel Wilson, though. All her scenes were

Finally found some time to catch up on some movies.

Last night I watched Hot Tub Time Machine 2 ... it was ... meh. I wasn't expecting much from it, so it neither surprised nor disappointed me.

What was disappointing is the trigger on my recliner broke and I can no longer recline in my chair. Image

Today I settled down (as much as possible) to watch Chappie. I wanted to catch it in theatres but didn't have a chance ... and I have to say, highly enjoyed it! Neil Blomkamp did a great job of bringing a non-human character to life, just like he did with the "prawns" in District 9. And it was nice to see Hugh Jackman playing the bad guy for once. Definitely recommend it.

I also watched the first episode of Wayward Pines and couldn't help but think Twin Peaks. Not sure if I'll stick with it or not.

Saw Mad Max Fury Road tonight. It was literally nothing but a 2 hour car chase. That's literally all it was. Not that I don't like that. I'm just having a hard time understanding how critics like it so much, when they always give other movies so much **** for having minimal story and character development. There was literally none of that in the movie. Not that I care, but still.

So far Mad Max: Fury Road is the most fun movie I have seen this year. I've seen it twice already, and if I can't go to sleep soon, I'm probably gonna go see it again. (Benefit of having a movie theater 5 minutes from my house.) The story is rather simple, but it is executed very well, and the stunts and action make the film an instant classic. I love The Road Warrior as well from the series, the original and Thunderdome not so much.

To me Fury Road was an updated Road Warrior. The plot was more or less the same, with a few minor changes, and the chase is pretty much the same thing. Bunch of crazy people in tricked out cars and monster trucks chasing an equally crazy person trying to protect people and their most valuable resource. Except this time the crazy person is not Max, but Furiosa, and the resource is not gasoline (or "guzzle-ine," as they say it), but mother's milk. And BTW, I always had it for chicks who can drive fast cars, but Furiosa driving that War Rig just puts everyone else to shame.

I always liked Charlize Theron's work, even if in real life she's kind of a b**ch, but this by far is my favorite of her roles. Hopefully the sequel actually does get made. I heard before that George Miller wrote and shot both Fury Road and Furiosa (the supposed title of the next film) at the same time. Not sure if that's true, though they did say they spent 7 months in a desert in Africa. As great as the action is in this movie, I wouldn't think just 1 film takes 7 months to film. Who knows. The score is also quite amazing. Bottom line: GO SEE THIS MOVIE. You might not like it as much as I did (I know putting it ahead (WAY ahead) of Avengers is blasphemy around here) but you won't regret seeing it. It's a hell of a ride. Almost literally.

Going to see Tomorrowland this upcoming weekend, I'm actually optimistic about this, looks like Clooney won't be his usual charming self, at least, not for the entire movie.

Watched it, found I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Not sure about mature all grown up black Jimmy Olson though, definitely a change from what I'm use to! (More so the maturity)

I prefer creating a new character over randomly changing the race and/or characteristics of existing characters. Not a deal breaker or anything, just a personal preference.

As for TV, I'm 10 episodes or so behind in Flash, Arrow, and Gotham. :BANG_HEAD:

Went and saw Mad Max today. RP pretty much covered most of it. I enjoyed it, (not as much as RP though) not fully sold on Tom Hardy as Max though.

It was just hard to hear him talk and not think Bane. Didn't help when he had his "mask" on either. Image

"BLOODBAG!" he screams as he runs to the tree to tie the winch around it. My favorite moment in the film.

And after seeing it 4 times, Nux is my favorite character.

Maybe. The movie was alright. At the very least it's future-tech sci-fi and that's the sort of sci-fi I like.

On a semi related note, thanks to a second chance offer, I just scored the first 5 seasons of Star Trek TNG on Blu Ray for $70!

Definitely disagree on that one. Not that I was a big fan of the original Planes, it was just the Cars story rehashed for the sky. Fire & Rescue just felt like a direct-to-DVD sequel.

That might be why I like it, it just felt so different then the first one. That and I've always liked fire fighters.

So because I have the week off, and because movies are $11 on Tuesdays, I jumped in the car and headed an hour north to the nearest cinema.

Had every intention of going to see Melissa McCarthy's "Spy". I was half expecting it to be slightly funny but mostly lame like "Tammy" was. It wasn't. It was funny, McCarthy was great as always (I'm a fan, shut the **** up) but she was backed up with a great support cast including Jason Statham who really needs to do more comedy.

I also decided that because I wasn't feeling tired from the drive and a movie, I'd take in San Andreas as well (haven't done a double feature in over 20 years). I liked it, but it was your standard disaster movie, and Dwayne didn't pull any wrestling moves. If you have some money to burn, and some time to kill, go see it. Otherwise, wait to pirate it for it come out on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Just watched How to Train Your Dragon 2 today. The movie is quite unafraid of dealing with "mature" themes like death and amputation, for a kid's movie. Overall, it was enjoyable. Not sure if it has to do with the new TV, but the CGI quality seems to have improved quite a bit from the original movie.

Also watched The Iron Giant yesterday. The story was kind of predictable, but still a nice heartwarming tale.
