I didn't read the book, so I had no point of reference regarding the source material, but it does focus more on 21st century gaming rather than 80s games and other pop culture things. It's mainly only references and cameos. The only 80s thing that has a significant role is the Atari game Adventure. Burn, did you catch G1 Megatron's few seconds of screen time?

Understandably they had a limited run time, the book squeezed in a hell of a lot, and trying to cram all that into one movie simply wouldn't work, nor would splitting it into two movies to try to fit things in.

I didn't. Was it part of the final battle? I missed a few minutes there as I had to do a dunny run.

No, it was earlier when the main villain goes looking for the girl after finding out she's still in the facility. The woman working for him wants to hand him a gun "just in case," and that's Megatron. He's in gun mode, not robot mode. You can tell it's him by the grip and the back of the gun. His "feet" at the bottom of the grip are also slightly visible.

Watched Riding Bean a few minutes ago. Not for the faint of heart by any stretch (violence out the wazoo and some pretty hardcore themes going on, most notably in the form of the utterly psychotic Semmer and Carrie) but if you're in the mood for some good ol' fashioned road-bustin' retro anime action (with music by Phil Perry and David Garfield), as I more or less always am, then this movie is definitely worth 45 minutes of your time. Seriously, it's brilliant.

I enjoyed Ready Player One quite a lot, not as much of a retro nostalgia trip as I thought it was going to be, I was expecting two solid hours of "Member Iron Giant? Yeah I member dat, member Back to the Future? I member, member Star Wars? I'd like to member but we couldn't get the rights", but thankfully the references and cameos weren't too distracting. It's by no means perfect, you've got a lot of cliches and tropes in there, and it goes a bit overboard with the "The digital world is not real life get off your smartphone!" message, but I found most of the cast to be pretty likeable. Artemis in particular was super cute both in and out of the Oasis, and i-Rok is the first TJ Miller performance I haven't found either boring or unfunny. I'd say my favourite part is when Artemis first meets Sho out of the Oasis and the cute little dialogue they have:
"Sho?"
"What, do I have to have a sign around my neck saying 'I'm eleven, shoot me first'?"
"Give me a hug!"
"Ninjas don't hug."

I also recently saw a British horror film called Ghost Stories, about a skeptical professor trying to debunk three cases of paranormal activity. The only big mainstream star it has is Martin Freeman, who plays a wealthy businessman haunted by a poltergeist. It wasn't too bad, while it does rely too heavily on jumpscares and a lot of the attempts at humour fall flat, but the story is completely unpredictable with a lot of twists and turns, so it's great in that regard.

I saw Rampage today, it was a lot of fun. Lots of action, destruction, and some humor. They tore up Chicago really bad. Not as bad as the Cons in DoTM, but close. They even had some similar action sequences. Hopefully the idiots making the new Godzilla movies will watch it and learn how to make a proper giant monster movie. Anyway, I definitely recommend this film. ;)^

Saw Ready Player One the other day. I loved it. Not as much as the book, but still really good. I got so caught up in it, I forgot to watch hit Easter eggs. I'll have to wait till it's out on digital.

I'm still fairly optimistic about Godzilla 2, but not really for Godzilla vs Kong because I don't think they've picked a very good director for it. At this point I'd rather have a Shin Godzilla sequel, which Toho apparently can't start work on until Legendary's Godzilla licence expires in 2020.

I saw it and loved it. But I think since you have kids you'll like it even more.

As for Godzilla 2, I'm going to give it a chance since Skull Island was good.

I did love it. Let me say as well, as a father of two boys, I'm am perfectly okay with an upset father tossing one of my sons through a wall when they catch them trying to play hide the pickle with thier daughter.

Teenagers "exploring" their sexuality is NOT something that should be encouraged. The new age hippie liberal Bulls hit can sucks my fatty. Keep it in your goddamned pants till you can be a responsible adult.

The movie was hilarious though. John Cena is really starting to grow as an actor.

On another side note, this is my 10,000th post. 15 years later (after joining) and I fairly hit that goal. Funny, when I joined, it was a very exclusive club with that many posts. It was something to go for. Now days, it's not so fancy. Ah well. :-D

I gotta say, it wasn't anything like the book, but for the first time, I didn't mind the alterations. The movie had a great story, good message, and a near-perfect cast (though I wished they'd made the villain less campy).

Plus that soundtrack was dynamite (especially for the end fight).

Agreed on all points, aside from the message. To hell with real life, sign my ass up for the Oasis today!

Just kidding. I have kids, so let's wait 20 years.

As for book/movie differences, let's be honest, a faithful to text movie would have had astronomical licensing costs.

So much love in this thread. :x

I just finished watching the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (RIP R. Lee Ermey) and damn did Jessica Biel look good back then.

Up next: The Running Man.

The Last Jedi

Disclaimer: I don't like Star Wars or Trek. When it comes to Sci-Fi films, I prefer it less "low brow".
That said, this was on and I thought I should watch a film so apparently divisive.
Why it's divisive, I don't know. To me, it was much like the rest of them???
The story was generic as ever, the actors bland and wooden. So no real surprises. I suppose some of the space battle visuals looked ok but apart from that, it was the same as all the others. 6/10

We all have our own opinions. To me Force Awakens and Last Jedi were both substandard compared to not only the original trilogy, but the prequel trilogy as well. For this I blame both Disney and the individual directors and writers. It is obvious that without George Lucas this franchise is lost. Rogue One was a pleasant surprise and by far the best of the new films, pretty much on par with the originals. I have high hopes that Solo will continue this trend.

What makes 7 & 8 better than 1-3 is they went back to using sets and didn't rely on CGI for basically everything.

But story wise ... **** hell The Last Jedi was **** and really crapped all over 7.

I don't mind last jedi and it's not like luke wasn't going to die in lucas's original vision of the story. Hamil said that lucas was going to kill him off after 9, once he trained leia. Which in retrospective it was a good thing they didn't go down that route as they wouldn't be able to put Carrie Fisher in the ninth movie at all, so there would be a huge problem.

That said, my new theory is that lucas and Disney should have worked together. Empire shows what happens if you get lucas to play well with others. The prequels might have turned out different had he decided not to do it alone more or less. So everyone working together could have produced the best. Though, because how long it's been between the original trilogy and the new films, they were never going to live up to the ideas we had in our heads. Likewise getting all the fans to agree with one version of what happened next as there would be one element that some fans wanted but others would have hated.

Also I loved the reveal about Rey's parents and I hope abrams leaves it be.

So I take it, Leia was trained to use the Force offscreen? I was a tad confused when she flew through space. Thinking I'd missed something. I have a big SW nerd friend (I scoff at him for SW, he mocks me for my "Big Dumb Robots".. We all laugh) He read all the old "extended universe" stuff and I don't remember him mentioning she could do stuff like that before this film?

ZeroWolf wrote:Also I loved the reveal about Rey's parents and I hope abrams leaves it be

I heard this is something fans complained about, but I thought it was in-keeping with a running theme of Star Wars?
All of the most powerful people in Star Wars, aside from the new bad guy, had nobody parents, or no parents were ever mentioned??
Biggest example: Vadar came from nothing.. literally!

She was trained in the old extended universe stuff but not in the new stuff which is why that scene took many by surprise.

I took my brother to see the prequels at the cinema for successive years as birthday presents and I don't remember seeing anything that like.. Other than The Emperor doing the old M.Bison Psycho Crusher in the third prequel

Between that and the extreme range astral projection that Luke does, surely these two are the most visually powerful shown in SW so far? No one in the prequels looked like they had the ability to survive being ejected into deep space.
