MP-01 Optimus Prime Modifications

Postby pbz313 » Tue Aug 19, 2014 10:20 pm

Motto: "why me?"
I was taking a look at my Masterpiece Optimus Prime (MP-01)....

Image

(I forgot to take a pic before I began!)

I was seriously starting to dislike the head.

Now, I know Igear came out with the "anime accurate head", but aside from the price (no money right now), I didn't like the eyes or the shape of the face (another thing bugging me about MP-01. I looked at MP-10, liked the head and all, but too small (and I have no money for an MP-10 anyways).

So, with that:

First, I disassembled his head. I then took and trimmed up the sides of the head (the second "horns" on either side), and smoothed out/reshaped the cheekpieces-

Image

Then, I glued extra plastic to the face, and reshaped the nose and eyebrows; I also glued the face plate on permanently, and then reshaped the visor on the helmet-

Image

After some painting, the finished piece:

Image

I heated and "smashed" some clear plastic over the eyes, then painted the eyes and used elmer's glue to glue the clear plastic over them. I also reshaped the eyes a bit.

Now, another thing I noticed was the shoulders:

MP-10:

Image

Mine:

Image

Since I like the MP-10 shoulders better, iI decided to do what I have never seen done before...

...modify the shoulders.

SO...

1) I removed all the pistons from the arms, ground down the biceps and fitted some heavy sheet styrene to the shoulder:

Image

Image

Image

Image

2) I then checked the transform to make sure nothing got in the way:

Image

3) Detailing the shoulders came next:

Image

Image

4) I then did my best to match the existing paint job I had:

Image

Image

Image

5) Finally, the labels (and silver bicep stripe):

Image

And MP-01 now had detailed shoulders (that transform!) that are more in-line with MP-10's.

Final result:

Image

Yeah,. the paint looks a little streaky, but eventually, this is going to get a total repaint/relabeling when I have the money to do so.

Then, I decided to do the nigh-impossible: give him a new neck.
First, my battle plans--er, blue prints:

Image

Then, raw materials:

Image

I cut everything into rough shape, then I began gluing sheets of plastic together into a block:

Image

Image

Comparing it to the plans to ensure specs:

Image

The finished block, marked for shaping:

Image

Sanding, phase 1:

Image

Beginning the scary part: cutting into the figure itself. No turning back now; if it doesn't work, I'm in a world of deep doo-doo! First, I ground down the plate the head and neck sits on:

Image

Complete removal of the old "neck":

Image

Continued shaping of the neck block; the "ears" are the revised version of the "box" I originally envisioned, held on with a metal pin that goes through the neck block:

Image

If you thought the removal of the neck from the head-plate was scary, routing out the bottom of Prime's noggin was absolutely terrifying! :

Image

Test fit of the new neck:

Image

I then attached the pivot peg and drilled a hole in it for the screw to attach:

Image

I drilled a 2-step hole into the head-plate: 1 large enough for the pivot peg; the other just big enough for the screw to come through on the other side:

Image

Test-fit of the new neck to the head-plate; I was tempted to put the "ears" up and paint it blue :lol :

Image

Full-up test of neck on head-plate, with head set in place:

Image

Side-view:

Image

Transform test; this was to ensure the neck didn't make the head too tall to fit into the back properly to transform:

Image

Results:

Image

Image

Image

The head is glued to the neck "ears" supports now; I have to sand and paint up the neck and smooth out the work done to the bottom of the head. The ears still move smoothly, and the neck has full movement. it just looks better to me now.

Next on my list: fix the thighs and "skirt".

Stay tuned...

Okay folks, photo time...

The neck and other parts I had to scrape paint off of have been painted:

Prime can move his head up and down about as well as with the ball joint:

And the classic Marvel Comics upper corner cover pose (at least as well as I could manage it):

Okay, now on to the upper legs. Stay tuned...

Wow, you did a fine job on that. As cool as MP-10 is, I do like the sheer statuesque majesty of MP-01.

The one thing you did I don't like...why did you strip out those gorgeous working pistons!? Whyyyyyyy? :(

Frankly, I disliked the pistons. They seemed too vulnerable to me, and were just a pain.

Right now, I'm working on reshaping his thighs to be a bit less chunky and blocky.

So folks...keep that channel tuned to WV-TV!!!

UPDATE:

After removing the small leg pistons (larger ones were left in place to keep the leg stable), I bent the sides of the lower end of the thigh plates in. The resulting gap will be filled in so the thigh meets the kneecap and houses it like on MP-10.

Comparison pic with non-modified thigh:

Image

Both modified:

Image

I then took to sanding and smoothing the thighs a bit more; I'll have a pic of that, the chest and the abs in a sec. But the more important work was the lower leg:

Image

The area that is sanded shows how much I would have to remove with my Dremel tool; the metal of the leg was in an inset even deeper than the regular wheel well (to accommodate the "working suspension"). This is where the "leg block" (the part that slides in) would stop. To gain the extra 1/4 inch of length needed for the upper leg mods, I had to cut this away:

Image

Thankfully, it's hidden by the wheels in both modes, and I made sure enough metal was left as to not ruin the suspension feature (it looks worse than it actually is!) and keep structural stability.

Image

Now, the leg block slides down lower, allowing me to put the extension at the top without making Prime's truck mode even more out of scale. But I also had to trim the front panel on the leg block (what looks like the grey inset on the top front of his lower leg) and replace it with thinner plastic.

*NOTE: in doing this, make sure the panel is as wide as the original; this helps hold the leg solid and prevents wobbling from side to side. I'm going to go back in a bit to add some material to make it even more stable.

Now, a shot of Prime with leg mods and work done to the chest and abs:

Image

I',m going to be taking another picture in a bit, but the silver stripes under his chest were sanded and reworked a bit to be less blocky, the panels under his lateral obliques were also ground down a bit, and you can see the new front panels on his lower legs. These will eventually be covered with new detail that I'm working on. Lastly, His leg "vents" kept falling apart and not working right (this has been since I first owned him!), and I finally discovered that the metal pin that was supposed to be there wasn't molded right. So, I elected to simply glue his leg vents into the "open" position and finally address this issue.

That's it for now, but I'll be posting more progress soon folks!

Cool job! I was going to say he reminds me a little of the Marvel Comics G2 Prime. He has the same hard kick @$$es first look! You should put him next to a G2 Mastepiece Sideswipe.

Wow, love the new neck. Reminds me of MP-13 Soundwave's neck design. But what really floors me is that you did all these modifications on an actual MP-1 and not, what most I know would use, a Hasbro (short stacked) version of MP-1, just to make sure everything worked out. You are very brave.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, it took a lot of guts, but as the SAS motto says :"Who dares, wins".

Now, for some update pics:

I began by marking MP-01's waist for the trim line:

Image

Then, I cut down the spare crotch section I had from my stash of repair parts:

Image

The assembled legs (retracted) and pelvic joint:

Image

Same assembly, with new pelvic block in place and sanded for fit:

Image

I began cutting the "skirt" with the dremel tool; note that I had to revise the trim line on the pelvic piece:

Image

Skirt flaps trimmed, ready to be glued together permanently:

Image

The inside of the new pelvic assembly, needing some remedial sanding:

Image

A closer look:

Image

The two test-fitted together (revealed the extent I would have to revise the cut:

Image

Glued (devcon plastic welder) and sanded:

Image

I then sanded the upper hip joint housings so that the outer leg armor (when attached) would rotate smoothy around it:

Image

Where the project stands now:

Image

The legs look a bit skinny right now, once the leg armor additions up top are completed, that should be remedied. The current leg armor is just a dummy made of masking tape as a temporary stand in. I also may have to sand the pelvic block a bit more to get it to look appropriate.

Continuing work on this folks, stay tuned.

Small update: upper leg armor attached:

Image

There's more filler parts to add in, then I'll sand and get a nice, smooth transition that will make it all look like one piece.

Proof it doesn't interfere with the transform:

Image

(Yes, they are supposed to sit that high; about 1/2 of an inch beyond the old mark for the leg is now within the lower leg).

Me in the process of adding the armor to the upper leg (where the joint was normall covered by the waist "skirt":

Image

And last, proof it doesn't affect his poseability a single bit:

Image

Rear view (showing how leg armor fits nicely with solidified waist skirt):

Image

I need to work on his lats and lower chest...more to come...

UPDATE:

Just to show everyone the blending work on Prime's legs:

Image

Image

The upper armor isn't 100 percent worked in yet, but it soon will be. Then I'll go ahead and add in the details to the legs. I'm also planning on using the dremel tool to carve detail into the backs of both the thighs and the lower legs.

I also have pics of the rebuild work on the silver chest stripes:

Image

Image

Image

I plastic-welded in two new plates, and they fit smoothly without impeding or gluing together the transform (yes, I tested it!). I am adding back in some details as well to the stripes, then I will detail his "lats" and get them up to speed with everything else.

After that, sanding for all the areas and paint.

Stay tuned...

UPDATE: I redid the robot-mode grill!

Step by step:

As you can see, when in truck mode, there's some space between the grill and the wheel blocks:

Image

So, I used this to my advantage, to put in the grill additions. Step 1 was to grind slots in the grill back to accept the extensions:

Image

Then, glue the extensions in so they would keep the grill level with Prime's chest. This also meant scraping all the chrome off so I could get an even finish on the whole thing:

Image

Next, I had to paint the whole thing black, as silver/chrome paint doesn't cover bare plastic too well:

Image

Then, applying the silver paint:

Image

Image

After the pics I've posted so far, I then used pearlescent paint and clear iridescent glaze to finish it, I'll have pics of that a bit later on (the preview pic I posted earlier doesn't have the last 2 paints on it).

UPDATE:

I modified Prime's waist to include the clear yellow sections as seen on MP-10.

The process:

1) Drilling/ cutting openings for clear pieces:

Image

Finished openings:

Image

2) Create detail panels to back the clear pieces:

Image

3) Installation of panels:

Image

Painted Panels:

Image

4) Cutting/ shaping of clear waist pieces (for this I used Plexiglas):

Image

5) Initial painting of clear pieces with Tamiya transparent Yellow:

Image

6) At this point, I was not happy with the results:

Image

So, I sanded the unit, plexi and all; the pic is just after sanding, with a new repainting of the clear pieces:

Image

7) After painting the waist black (it takes the silver paint better than bare plastic), begin painting silver around the clear pieces:

Image

8) The waist after refinishing:

Image

And where the project stand as of right now:

Image

At this point, most of the modifications I wanted to make have been done, but there's still several items and issues to pursue. However, I think this is beginning to approximate MP-10 in several ways. I just need to work on the alt mode to smooth it out, and some touch-up/ finishing work in addition to the stuff that remains to be done.

Stay tuned...

Okay folks,

UPDATE:

Image

I rebuilt the front headlight panels!

But first, the biceps:

First, arm disassembly (and on the right arm, elbow joint repair):

Image

Then grinding the sides of the elbow to allow for the widened bicep:

Image

New bicep piece:

Image

Gluing on the new parts:

Image

In place:

Image

Primeamania running wild:

Image

Okay, now the headlight panels/ truck front:

First, gluing on the strips to build up the front:

Image

New front panels:

Image

Side strips to fill in the corners:

Image

Trial fit, robot mode:

Image

Trial fit, truck mode:

Image

Silver truck stripes glue-in:

Image

Headlights:

Image

Paintwork:

Image

Now, the work isn't finished just yet; I plan on detailing the headlights more, and I need to clean up/ smooth out the paintwork a bit more. . And I may change the panel transform to the kind MP-10 uses. We'll see.

Jointed individual fingers: if I get the job I just applied for, that's next. :D

The feet: we'll see if I can mod those safely.

Windshield: I'm reluctant at this point to do anything, as it would require grinding metal.

Also, I removed the painted on detail on the upper thighs and carved in the vents, glued on insets for the truncated "v" shapes on the upper thighs and detail- painted the stuff. I'll try to have pics in a bit.

UPDATE:

Sorry it's been so long folks. But working this out for Prime's back has been a real challenge!

Anyways, what I did was to add joints to the panels so they rotate and then swing in, becoming part of the backpack rather than the mid-back. But since the last pic, I had a brainstorm:

Cut the bumper in 3, replace the front of the bumper, and make the bumper pieces the JOINT.

So, let me show you the transform as it stands now:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And that's how it's done! I simply replaced the swivel joint with the natural, built in one from the peg that clips the bumper to the fender. I then used the old joint to pivot the panel on the bumper once in position!

(I hope you guys didn't think I was putting you on or something! :)

Now, to rebuild the front of the bumper and detail it akin to MP-10.

Meanwhile...
I decided to redo my figure of Roller:

Image

My original paint job on roller wasn't so good, especially after so many moves between new apartments; so, a scrub in alcohol and cleanser to remove the old crappy paint:

Image

Then, a repaint in Valspar black plastic paint (think Krylon Fusion):

Image

Then, repainting the colors and details:

Image

And some Autobot labels:

Image

Image

(sorry about the blurriness)

And viola! Roller!

Image

(just wait till you see what HIS weapon is!)

Image

Roller is armed with the MASER Deck Gun (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation):

Image

This bad boy can be held by Roller, or mounted to the Command deck for twice the firepower:

Image

Image

Some clearer pics of Roller:

Image

Image

If that loudmouth punk Rumble and his obnoxious brother Frenzy are thinking of sneaking into prime's trailer to pull some dirty tricks, Roller has a WORLD of pain waiting for them!

Image

Also, I refuse to be "one-upped" by the MP-10 figure's accessories, so I'm also building...

Image

Say hello to Spike Witwicky, MP-01 scale, and poseable. :)

Okay, time for an update:

Image

Image

The cheap acrylic paint is gone, replaced by Valspar Plastic Fusion and Testors metallic red and blue, as per my usual operating procedures. Detailing is still rough, but will be refined. Additional details have been added, particularly on the back of the torso, pelvis and legs.

The bumper has been refined as well, and is awaiting foil to chrome it with.

Also, I'm rebuilding the artillery robot:

Image

Progress:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The foil tape was removed from the cannons, and they were reworked according to schematics:

Image

Main cockpit was shaped even further, and hollowed out; it needs more work to fit the Spike figure though:

Image

Basic shapes glued together:

Image

the artillery robot in pre-paints:

Image

It still needs the arm, canopy, internal seat and panels and radar dish. Also, I'm reworking the base to look less like I "dis-armed" Ultra Magnus!

Now, to explain why I work as I do (painting everything as I go and the "assymetrical" work):

The reason "I paint as I go", then repaint later, is due to a head injury sustained when a psychotic family member (who is currently serving time) tried to smash my skull in during an altercation that was not of my doing nor fault. Because of that, I have visual perception and cognition issues now that required me to revise the techniques I had learned over 25 or so years years of modelbuilding and kitbashing. Without the immediate painting, the parts literally "vanish" and I see only "holes" in the piece.

Parts that seem asymmetrical will be trimmed and refined later, but as I work, I have to refine them slowly due to the perception issue,. I also have to put this aside from time to time, as the selfsame injury also wreaks havoc with my emotional state and can make me quite moody.

I know working like this seems unusual, but I refuse to let my gifts be taken from me by violent individuals who can only express themselves via physical brutality. I truly appreciate the support I have here in this forum.

Okay folks, more updates...

The wooden mold (buck) for the combat mech canopy:

Image

Molding the canopy (plexiglas used here instead of styrene); I used the burner from an electric stove to soften the plexi in order to "smash" it down on the wooden buck. I used oven mits to hold the plexi while pulling down over the wooden mold:

Image

Removal from mold and trimming:

Image

Rough fitting to combat mech:

Image

Image

Beginning of framing on canopy:

Image

Then I did some more work:

Image

I was going to paint this, but I got sidetracked on a missing detail: the RADAR dish!

Sooo....

Image

Image

Image

I scratched it together from styrene pieces, including one I cut roughly into round shape, screwed to the cutting mandrel of my Dremel tool, and shaped using a file and stone.

I double-jointed it so it would fold down neatly and not hit the canopy I just made.

Then, paintwork:

Image

Image

Paints applied, and the cockpit canopy has a smoked amber transparent finish now. I was undecided on which to do, so I did both! :D
ell, with everything else being modified and upgraded on MP-01, I thought it was high time to do likewise to the trailer itself.

This is it just after I stripped down most of the details, but before I took off the old Combat Droid:

Image

Yeah, it was a royal mess.

What I did next was to cut a piece of sheeting from a fluorescent light out, and use the "diamond pattern" to my advantage:

Image

I then cut out the blue outlined areas, and glued it into place:

Image

(and used some carbonated refreshment to hold it in place. Were I to be legitimate "G1", i should have used Pepsi!)

New piece in place:

Image

The trailer pretty well scraped out, with new plastic in place:

Image

I then took some VERY heavy styrene sheet (think "PLANK"), and cut it into sections that when assembled, would look like panel lines in the walls:

Image

The sections during "rough fit" in the trailer:

Image

Changing gears for a bit, I took some time to router out the cockpit of the artillery mech even further:

Image

And that was to make room for this figure, whom I was able to rescue with some spare parts and a bit of glue:

Image

Moving right along with the trailer mods, I began the detailing on the internal panels. I started by carving panel lines and laying very thin styrene over the panels, creating a recessed effect. The process is shown visually as follows:

1) The panel is detailed, and sanded. This pic shows the panel after the detailing, but before the sanding process. A cutout for the hings joint for the dual laser emplacement has been cut into the panel:

Image

2) After some sanding, I painted the piece in black spray paint. This is so I can build the metal color on top of it. It shows the pits, ripples and scratches, but those are removed later with some wet sanding:

Image

3) After some wet-sanding, I began building the metal color on the piece by dry-brushing it in multiple directions. I didn't want a smooth, shiny silver piece, but metal with a bit of texture:

Image

4) Continuing the painting process, where more paint is drybrushed on; I wanted to establish a "grain" for the surface's metal look:

Image

5) I continued on, until the paint was nearly complete. This pic doesn't show it well, but I managed to get a "brushed metal" look to it with the technique:

Image

6) Beginning of the panel-line details:

Image

7) More detail work, largely with a fine brush and black ink:

Image

8) In place:

I repeated the steps for the opposite panel; I'll just post those pics by themselves so you can see the progression (the shots turn a couple of times, be advised):

And this is both panels in place on the trailer:

Another shot (more from the side):

The hinges will be covered with styrene, while the remaining areas of the "floor" on the trailer halves will be filled in. The "black areas" are going to be done as a surprise for everyone here (not saying just yet!), while the inside of the "roof" and inside front of the trailer walls will also be re-covered with sheet styrene. The, re-attaching the artillery mech and cleaning up the gun mount for Roller I'm probably goung to develop an all-new mounting!).

After all that, I'll address the outside of the trailer; I just need to get my hands on two REALLY big Autobot symbols (larger than the ones on Prime's shoulder!). The blue striping and silver on the sides I'm going to redo using foil tape and paint.

Stay tuned gang, I've got surprises up my sleeve...

Motto: "why me?"
UPDATE:

I cleaned up the back of the trailer, and replaced the lower tailgate and bumper:

Image

I also did some work on the rear fenders and the swing-out supports; the supports will be given the same details as the MP-10 version. But for now, I redid them so they actually touch the ground:

Image

Details on the hitch area are almost complete; I just need to add a few more details:

Image

Now for the combat deck...

I added more internal wall panels, and permanently installed the two side stations.

Overall progress view:

Stations deployed! :

A better look at the new sidewall panels, which will be detailed out as I go:

Image

I still have more work to go, but this is really beginning to come together again for the first time in 10 years. Some of the panel paint work needs some touching-up from construction marks and whatnot, and both stations' joints need painting (especially the one to the right of the combat mech; the installation was a bit messy and once dry , it needs sanding and clean-up). I'll have to do some painting for next time, as the project has major "holes" in my vision now, and I need to be able to see them.

Stay tuned folks...

UPDATE:

Since this is a mass update, I'll be posting several updates in one:

I did some detailing on the combat deck:

Image

More detailing:

and

Image

You can see some of the new work on the combat deck floor, while the outer trailer has been repainted and is waiting for silver foil tape to begin the outer markings. I plan on drybrushing pure silver onto the outside for contrast, as I know the color is a bit dark (deliberately so).

It's a bit rough in the paint department right now, but it's still early. At least I can see the parts now!

Truck mode:

Combat deck:

Image

I still need to refine details here, but the silver paint dries slowly, so I have to wait.

Progress on details:

Image

Image

The detail is based on the original G1 version. A lot of the paintwork is to mark where 3-d detail will go when completed, so don't worry if it looks a bit "cartoony" right now. The reds will be replaced with copper colors, while the blues will be more bluish-steel colored.

More progress:

Image

Image

Image

Now, some of the detail is still rough and almost cartoonish, but as I go, I replace the painted in stuff with the 3D insets and paint out the former work. Stuff that is still "outlined" on both the black flat and the silver areas are still waiting for 3D parts to be glued into place. Once that is done, I will then "clean-up" the look of the parts and do final details on them.

BTW: I was saving this pic for a "rainy day":

Continuing on with my most recent progress:

Image

This is the wheel for the bottom of the truck; I carved this from pvc pipe and used styrene to fill in the sides and middle. I apologize for this and the next pic's quality.

Painted:

Image

The wheel in place underneath the trailer bed:

Image

I also did some work on the other side of the combat deck:

Image

The small door is 3d, just with line work on it. The rest of the multicolor shapes will be installed in 3D. As for the pink display screen (originally seen on the G1 trailer), I thought it should be a bit more...visible...

Image

Image

I made it so it could flip up, then swivel; this way, Prime can see it easily, and Spike can use it as a massive "touch screen display unit" (swivel units courtesy of Craftsmith. Thanks mate!!!).

The trailer as it stands right now:

Image

I'll keep working on it and continue to add 3D parts and refine the paint job. It's slow going, but once the final parts are in, I'll redo the paint details and tighten everything up.

Stay tuned... next episode, Prime gets cable TV and Internet!

(and no, it's not Comcast!)
