MP-05 Megatron's Cosmic Rust, aka Tarnish problem (with pics) solutions inside

Postby 0ctane » Mon Aug 27, 2007 2:30 am

My MP05 megatrons feet started to develop a few sleight brown areas on his feet (the only frikkin metal bits on the blasted thing) and i'm just afraid that if i don't do something now it'll get worse.

do any of you have this problem? I did a search on google and read that someone else's has started to rust too. Do you guys think that using some rust remover would be a good idea or will that totally ruin the feet?

I just don't know what to do, I don't think putting it back in its box will stop the oxidation process. :-(

Any ideas?

:-( I have no freaking clue... will try and get some pics up later if i can, i'm in the middle of moving house. I just keep my megs in a display cabinet with my 20th prime and some G1 reissues. when i was emptying the shelves to move the cabinet i noticed the marks and now that i've put them all back in the case here i see that its gotten worse. dunno whats causing the patches, so chromed stuff doesn't rust? this is just weird.

oh yea and i don't lick my transformers

Rust can spread from other metals. Its rare but it happens. I havent had any rust on mine, but then again, he stays in gun mode the whole time.

Also, rust needs moisture, does it not? This sounds odd. Hurry with the pics, I wanna see this!

Of course. Moister is what mixes with air to cause the oxidization of metals. Though I didnt think chromed metals could rust, unless, the chrome has cracked or peeled away, revealing the gooey center.....mmmmm.....candy.......

spray some WD-40 on there. (Or CRC, same thing.) You'll have to re-apply every now and again. Especially if you plan to play with it.

Once it evaporates, a protective residue is left over. It does wipe off very easily though.

I'm pretty sure that it's safe on most plastics, but you may want to double check that.

Also, vinegar removes rust as well. The vinegar found in ketchup should also work. Thing is, that will only remove the rust. That wont fix the problem. Your best bet is to unscrew the feet, remove the rust with dw-40 or vinegar, then lay them on some paper and spray some clearcoat on them. You should be able to buy clearcoat spray cans at any wallmart, or hobbyshop. It should only cost at the most 5 bucks.

Air is full of moisture.

Are you spraying any cleaning products near it?

Chlorine containing products can make even stainless steel rust.

OT, but when I wasd a student I worked in a lesuire centre, which had a big swimming complex and eating places etc. One day the "chemical man" comes and delivers the chemicals, basically using hoses which pumps into the system. Well he got the chemicals mixed up, and it ended in chlorine gas being produced and sent through the full air conditioning system, ending in a lot of people needing hospital.

Well, after it was safe to enter we had to go in and start the cleanup, anywhere there was metal, any metal at all, had a lovely coating of oxidisation, including every single thing in our stainless steel kitchen!!

Chlorine = bad!

I am sorry but I could not help but laugh since this mimics the G1 episode when Megs contracted cosmic rust

I agree with the WD-40 idea. Make sure you are in a well ventilated space though.

Longs for the days of G1 where we only had to worry about Megatron, Soundwave and Laserbeak wanting to be Autobots, Swoop calling himself Tracks and Slingshot calling himself Slingslot!

I guess you're just going to have to stop taking him in the bath tub. No more "undersea adventures" for Megatron.

Seriously though, that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

I noticed a little of that on mine the other day.

He's not crazy, the feet aren't chromed, they are metal.

The room my Megatron is in is mostly dry and Megs hardly ever gets touched. I think a lot of people are going to see this on their figures in time.

It might be some residue from the oils and sweat of your hands when you were transforming him. He is hard to transform at first. That stuff sticks easily at the chrome metal feet and the chrome metal back skeleton of the figure.
Try wiping it off.

I wonder what metal his feet are made of? I think some metals are more suseptable to rusting that others. Maybe they are made of cheap galvanized steel.

I thought only iron and metals containing iron, like steel, could rust. Other metals can do it too?

Only iron and iron alloys rust, but other metals have similar processes, not always as destructive as rust.
Copper, brass, aluminium and silver, for example, tarnish.

the green on copper is the vertigrese, that's the "rust" Aluminium goes white and powdery.

this is the best pic i could come up with for now, my camara goes blurry without the flash.

this is how i display megs.

so best bet would be to unscrew the feet and spray wd40 on it,wipe it off and add clearcoat. I only display him because i don't want to break him.

stoopid cosmic rust...

the only thing hat "chrome" is is a protective layer (with lot's of shineyness) over a metal.
it could be that the metal used for megs' feet (mp-5 btw, booyah!) was not propperly clean to start with, or there was a poor application of the chrome.
Even Inox (or whatever you call it) can rust given the proper conditions (a lot of time in dishwasher.)

So .. yeah.. that sucks.. one more reason to leave mine sealed :p
