It depends on the skill of the designers, really.
What may also hamper things is that compared to the toys, the animation models for G1 range from heavily simplified, down to mere blocks at times, to completely made up, both with things happening that aren't possible with current physics. Think of parts "morphing" to a more pleasing (read: easier to work with) shape and other animation quirks and cheats.
Beast Wars is better at sticking closer to the original toy, or rather, less deviations and creative licenses are made, but they're still present, particularly in Dinobot. Cheetor's main offense in that is that's he's "stretched", but the main design points are still present.
