Can't tell you if it's because of the manufacturer or the popularity however.

Is there any info out on whether that's been confirmed and when that may take place? I'm debating pre-ordering him in fear there won't be a Hasbro release

There is no confirmation yet (which is not unusual) but Hasbro has released every MP mold except for Megatron. It's kinda iffy on Sideswipe/Red Alert due to licensing issues but Soundwave has no such issues. We may not hear about it until BotCon though.

And I'm 100% with them on this. Soundwave turns into a box. I just can't see any actual "fun" being had with it.

Hasbro has reissued g1 Sideswipe ,and Redalert earlier last decade. I don't think it will be a problem.
