NBC's Community

Who else has been watching this excellent comedy programme?

Image

Better, funnier, more positive representation for geek culture and just social issues in general, with great referential humour and attention to detail. Now in its fifth season, after a disappointing fourth.

Soo... anyone? :D

I know it as being on NBC, but I watch it in the UK, so it might not be.

Hang on..

Nope, definitely NBC.

It was a play on how poorly the NBC network does in the ratings in the US.

Ah. Yes, that did seem to plague Community as well. But I thought Parks and Rec got some good numbers, on the other hand..? :-?

I enjoy this show. Missed some of it last season. Conflicted w/ Big Bang Theory which I love more. Now that I have a DVR again, I record Community. However I wonder if it's on its way out. SPOILERS: First they killed off Pierce and now Troy has apparently left the show.

We know that was going to happen, though. It was mentioned repeatedly towards the end of season 4, and confirmed pretty quickly.

As for the comparison with Big Bang Theory, I can't stand it. It was vaguely amusing when it first came out, but took a bad turn almost immediately and has been perpetrating negative stereotypes about geek culture (as well as fairly sexist and racist lines, thrown casually in every now and then) ever since. Community seems to be laughing with geeks rather than at geeks.

And that's a welcome change. :D

I never got that impression about Big Bang Theory. Not at all. But I like Community more. I didn't even mind the fourth season. Don't like how the show went from about 20 episodes per season to a 13-show order, though.

Your opinion's different from mine and that's not allowed. Everyone, grab your pitchforks. Get him!!!!

Seriously, I never saw Big Bang Theory as insulting nerds. In fact, I saw it embracing nerddom, which is getting more common nowadays I think, but it's still nice to see a show whose characters aren't "cool."

But I still like Community more. Not sure why, but I think its humour is a little more out there, more "sub-real."

i never got that impression from BBT. theres a lot of self deprecating humor, but y'know the saying "if you cant laugh at yourself" eh? i feel theyve brought a lot our culture to the main stage, even made us revered. these days its cool to be a nerd, and i bet its partially in thanks to shows like this.

The biggest issues I have with Big Bang Theory are to do with the representation of geek culture as something laughable: characters are portrayed as being so immersed in it that they are socially inept, awkward and almost constantly the butt of the joke. When they are not, it's Penny who receives verbal abuse due to her not having the same level of education as the others.

There's casual racism and homophobia in the portrayal of Raj, casual sexism towards most of the women, overt sexism and general creepiness in the behaviour of Howard (who is still a main character, and whom we are supposed to 'like' to an extent). Particularly upsetting was the episode in which Bernadette, Penny and Amy visit the comic book store - a potentially good set-up that only turns into the usual and outdated (if only) 'oh but women just don't get comics'.

This piece is a very good comparison of the two, that also does not thrash one over the other: http://observationdeck.io9.com/communit ... 1509523444

And this, while I disagree in the tone, is a good summary of why I prefer Community over Big Bang Theory:

Paintballing (twice). Glee. Dungeons & Dragons. Pulp Fiction. Community constantly pay homage to pop culture cleverly. There’s actual – *gasp*- writing involved. The Big Bang Theory uses references to things in pop culture as punch lines. Nothin’ but laziness there. (from http://www.gollancz.co.uk/2012/12/10-re ... ng-theory/)

I suggest you watch the episode Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (Season 2, episode 14), in which the game is used as a way of looking at body issues and suicidal depression.

(Also, and not to be underestimated, is the glorious lack of laughter in Community. I cannot stand recorded laughter.)

Addition to my previous post: Big Bang Theory may have been the first - it is definitely not the best nor only one, and with the options out there, it is one I choose not to watch any more.

I am not attempting to tell other people what to watch or to convert you to my opinion, by the way, simply pointing out why my opinion is what it is! :D

This may sound a little harsh, and I apologize for that, but I think you are being a little to sensitive to these issues. I feel BBT pokes fun at the issues it does to help fight them. You have to be able to laugh at yourself and your problems or you will never get anywhere in life. You'll also win more support to your Sid win chuckles than you will marches.

Speaking as a geek, and one who has faced ridicule for my passions all my life, BBT embraces "geek culture" like no show has before, in an extremely positive way.

The several episodes of community I tried to watch were plain boring.

We are obviously not going to agree on most of these points, but sensitivity has very little to with it.

Self-aware humour only works when the humour is funny and self-aware. BBT, especially after initial seasons, does not do that.

Look at it this way, when I was younger it might be fair to describe me as slightly homophobic. I would never say I was a hateful person, because I still believe in treating people like people, but I didn't care for other lifestyle choices and thought people are full of it when I talked about it not being a choice.

Shows like the BBT have convinced me otherwise. Not necessarily because of their jokes, but because a treat those issues as just a daily part of life. They don't throw things in your face. They don't beat you over the head with an agenda. They just make you see, in a very subtle way, that these things are normal everyday part of life and should be treated as such.

Part of every day life is been able to make fun of everything. Doesn't matter if some people find it offensive or not. Getting offended is a daily part of life too. Something we all have to learn to deal with.

I really want to engage in this conversation (and others) with you, but am in a very bad spot right now and don't feel I can be measured in my tone as much as I would like. I will come back to it at a later point.

So, in the meantime, back on the main topic with the new trailer (voiced by our own Jon Bailey!)! :D

Sounds good! I hope my tone doesn't come off as sounding too hostile, either. it's a shame were separated by an ocean. I feel this is one of those conversations that's best held over good food and cold beer.

I just started watching Community about a month ago. I catch a broadcast rerun here and there. I think it's darn funny.
I've tried watching The Big Bang Theory on a few separate occasions. It physically hurts me to watch with all the eye rolling, groaning and wincing that I experience.
I was talking to my buddy last night about the two and though he's aware of them doesn't watch either. He told me he's heard it said that, "The Big Bang Theory is a show about smart people for stupid people. Community is a show about stupid people for smart people."
I laughed and agreed adding, "Yup. Those are the memes you see on the Internet."

What is it that I hate so much about laugh tracks? I don't have any issues with live audiences laughing. I wonder if it has anything to do with the "uncanny valley."
Maybe it's the way the acting is stilted to allow for a pause for fake laughter after every single line that's blurted out.

I've always wanted to try watching a show recorded with a laugh track with the laugh track removed. I imagine it would be very surreal.
Information wants to be free.
