New IDW Beast Wars comic series

In this video, "IDW 2020 The Future of Comics… Today!" for Wondercon@Home 2020, Chris Ryall and John Barber discuss the future of IDW.

At the 45:30 mark, the pair have this little announcement:
Ryall: Yeah, I mean, I don't know if there's other Transformers plans you want to discuss here or not... But maybe uh... Beast Wars has an anniversary coming up, if I'm not mistaken.

Barber: It does, yes. And that is something that we... wanna maybe sorta talk about is... I think this is, I don't think we've talked about this anywhere. There'll be a new Beast Wars series coming very soon. I know more details about it. *laughs* I know a little more about it than that. But we're not ready to tell anything. But, yeah, it's gonna be the anniversary of Beast Wars. I think that's a... It's such a huge thing, worldwide. "Beast Mode", everybody knows what that means and... Yeah, it'll be exciting to come back into that world. You know, over the years, we've had a lot of the characters show up. I, personally, have given short shrift to a lot of those Beast Wars characters in stories I've written. Sorry. This won't be that. This will be genuine genuine Beast Wars that I think a lot of people grew up with and a lot of people love.

Ryall: I mean, that's kinda the cool thing about Transformers as a whole, you know, there's the Beast Wars fans that are rabid for more Beast Wars, and the UK fans grew up loving that [as in, the Marvel UK G1 comics], and the fans of the, you know, the main book we've been doing, or all the other iterations, and so... It's great that there's not only audiences for all of this kind of content but also that there's the passion from the fans that wanna keep seeing more of all of it, so...

Barber: I mean, for a lot of our Transformers creators, Beast Wars, I mean, for years, Beast Wars has been the stuff people grew up with. Like, that was what introduced them to this world.

So, yeah, make of that what you will.

I am not aware of a continuing Beast Wars prequel story (as in not a miniseries or one-shot) so I would really like to see that. Start at the beginning of when Maximals and Predacons first show up and go from there. No need to lead up the tv series anytime soon.

Would that be "Beast Wars", though? If they're still on Cybertron turning into vehicles during the war-less peacetime of the Pax Cybertronia?

I guess not, technically. But wouldn't you want to know the complete story of the characters? How Megatron became a fugitive, how the Axalon crew came together, stuff like that? I mean I know there are some details out there (unless I missed a complete prequel story already published), but I would like to see perhaps a story arc in the first 4 or 6 issues setting up their departure from Cybertron. Maybe even some issues that take place exclusively on each of their ships. They might be considered filler, but it would go toward character development, as often filler does.

Whatever the reason, I just want Beast Wars in comic form. I just hope Barber & Co. can live up to the original BW show writers in terms of creativity.

I hope they can make the version of Beast Wars that isn't limited by the show's restraints,so we can get more time with the toy-only characters.

Do you mean The Gathering?I have not read it personally, but from what I see from TFwiki,it's a story that runs alongside the show, having many explanations why the characthers don't cross their paths, for the most part.
I want to see something like the the stories hinted at toys bios and the such. The Beast Wars that only exists in our heads, trying justify all these charactes that only had toys and how they would interact with the show characters and main plotline.

The Gathering/Ascending was a demonstration in wasted potential. It more or less completely fixated on the Japanese BW characters, in terms of characterisation. Every other non-show appearance was at most a visual cameo.

As for the main Beast Wars series, prequels are redundant. As it largely irrelevant to the main crux of the series itself. I am less than thrilled IDW are aiming their sights at BW, in light of their previous (insulting) attempts to tap the fanbase with IDWverse.

But, I would be curious if they kept going forward with the Beast Era. Not Transtech, as doesn't mean anything to BW either. But continue the Beast Era, post-Beast Machines. Do something new, while incorporating the non-show character designs. Doing something New is what made Beast Wars the success it was, after all.

Plus we've already had another prequel in terms of the botcon set which offered a potential look at what the character's pre beast forms were.

Though can you do post beast machines since Trans Tech was the result of Primals last act? We've already seen two alternative takes on beast wars, with shattered glass beast wars and Beast Wars: Uprising.

Transtech has never been canonical to a mainline series. So just as Takara did long ago with The Rebirth, it can be ignored or overwritten by something more Official.

Granted, it is a completely different creative team this time made up of different people than before.

Universe 2003 was a post-Beast Machines series, and the BotCon comics that 3H put out for that line at the time were initiated from on high by Hasbro themselves.

Plus, Takara did their own post-Beast Machines 4-part storyline called Beast Wars Reborn (which also seemed to serve as a sort of Galaxy Force prequel since it had the post-BM Primal and Megatron brought into the Unicron Trilogy cartoon universe's distant past).

The Winston Chan cover looked nice. The rest, especially the really stylised one, looked horrible. BW really doesn’t deserve being IDW’d...

I for one am looking forward to it.

The last time IDW tried to do a Beast Wars series (The Gathering, The Ascending, the Sourcebooks), it was kind of a mixed bag.

But this second try has me much more hopeful.

I loved the Beast Wars: Uprising series that Fun Publications did back in 2014-2016, but that was more confined to Cybertron and a totally radical overhaul of things.

This new series from IDW looks to be a more familiar take on Beast Wars but still putting its own spin on things. Count me excited.

Definitely on the fence. This would also be the third time BW has been portrayed by IDW. All that stuff leading upto the damp squib Unicron event, still counts. Even if they were all disrespected as fan service cameos.

Dubious about emphasis on "jokes" in Beast Wars too. As that normally was a byword for the worst episodes of Season One (and Three). The Low Road, for example.

Whereas it is doubtful they would try to hit the Right tone for Beast Wars (season two) or even try to make something out of Beast Machines that fans might actually enjoy? As that was the only part of the Beast Era that was open ended, free to be anything.

Really hoping the Bat Bot isn't Nightscream, either.

First Look At IDW’S Brand New Beast Wars Comic Series

Postby ZeroWolf » Fri Oct 09, 2020 1:18 pm

Motto: "My past no longer binds my future..."
Weapon: Battle Blades
Greetings Seibertronians! Fans of Beast Wars need to take note of this, as IDW have given us our first look at their forthcoming Transformers Beast Wars comic! Special thanks to fellow Seibertron user, Sabrblade, for spreading the news in the forums.

The series will be written by Erik Burnham (of Transformers/Ghostbusters and IDWs own Ghostbusters series) with Josh Burcham (IDW Transformers ongoing, Galaxies and the three Wreckers books, and a lot more) on art duties. The series is set to arrive in February 2021 with issue #1. From the looks of it the core Maximal team is set to include Optimus Primal, Rhinox, Cheetor, Rattrap and a new character that looks to have a bat alt mode called Nyx. While on the Predacon side we only see Megatron so far.

There will be four variant covers at launch, three of which you can see below:

Here is the press release in full:
IDW wrote:IDW Celebrates 25th Anniversary of
Transformers: Beast Wars with
New Comic Book Series

Oversized First Issue Debuts in February 2021, with Story and Art by
Transformers Comic Alums Erik Burnham and Josh Burcham

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 9, 2020) – For an entire generation of Transformers fans, their first experience with “Robots in Disguise” was through the Transformers: Beast Wars television show, debuting in 1996 as the cutting edge of computer generated children’s entertainment. In 2021, IDW will honor the 25th anniversary of this monumental moment in Hasbro’s storied Transformers franchise with the launch of an all-new Transformers: Beast Wars comic book series!

Written by Erik Burnham (Transformers/Ghostbusters) with art by longtime Transformers artist Josh Burcham (whose credits include IDW’s ongoing series, Galaxies, the Wreckers saga, and much, much more), the new series will launch in February with a #1 issue containing 30 pages of story and bonus content.

The Transformers: Beast Wars comic series will welcome fans to a future Cybertron populated by scientific-minded Maximals and action-oriented Predacons. When the successor to the Megatron name steals a golden disk and a ship capable of traveling through time, only Optimus Primal and a team of Maximals — Rattrap, Rhinox, Cheetor, and a new character Nyx — can stop them.

“Beast Wars was a wonderful and weird pivot from the Transformers setup to which I was first introduced. Big personalities, unexpected twists, and actual stakes all popped up regularly on the show, and those are tools that I enjoy using to build new stories,” says Burnham. “Best of all, the enthusiasm from everyone involved in this project has been so high that I'm feeling constantly inspired!”

“I'm so thrilled to be a part of this team,” says Burcham. “I was a ‘90s kid and even though I knew about Generation 1, Beast Wars was really my G1. It's still my favorite iteration, and I consider it such a privilege to be able to bring the characters to life in this brand new series. Let the Beast Wars rage on!"

“Beast Wars is a beloved part of the Transformers legacy,” says editor David Mariotte. “That’s why we couldn’t pass up launching a new series in tandem with the 25th anniversary! Erik and Josh are going to take everything that’s beloved about Beast Wars — the characterization, the drama, the jokes — and start fresh with a series that will feel at home for fans of 25 years and first-timers alike.”

Transformers: Beast Wars #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Josh Burcham, Cover B by Fico Ossio (Optimus Prime), and two Retailer Incentive editions featuring art by Dan Schoening (Transformers/Ghostbusters) and Nick Brokenshire (Star Wars Adventures), respectively.

For information on how to acquire copies of Transformers comic books, please contact your local comic shop or visit http://www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

25th anniversary? Has it really been that long since Hasbro actually did something brand new with Transformers??? (of course UT was more recent. But it did go back to vehicles and humans)

Pretty sure from the Maximal interactions in the pilot, the flight of the Axalon was more or less their first time meeting?

As clearly we can't do anything with Beast Wars that isn't a prequel or "new spin"/retcon/cashing in on brand recognition... :(
