Phantom Hourglass frustration

Postby Galvatron628 » Sat Feb 09, 2008 5:43 am

Man I love this game, been addicted to it, but I cannot stress how much I HATE the temple of the ocean king. how many times do I have to go back to this stupid temple? This would be my 3rd time and I'm pissed that everything I did the last time has been undone

I got sick of running out of time the first time in the temple so I bought a strategy guide, studied it, and ran through it in 5 minutes the first time. now I gotta go back in there again. You know its an hourglass...why can't I just flip it over when I run out of time? And why can't I kill those damn phantoms!

This was a bad idea. I don't think I'd have near a problem with it if I didn't have to make it through the whole damn temple in 10 minutes! A time limit on a mario game is one thing but at least in Mario I'm going in a straight line, I don't feel pressue to solve a puzzle, avoid indestructable foes, and find my way around in a mario game!

WTF Was nintendo thinking?

GRRR... sorry I had to rant. I was playing through the game having fun until that linebeck guy said "lets go back to the god damn temple"!

You said it yourself, you're playing Zelda, not Mario.

You are the victim of a design flaw. It's one of the reasons I don't want to play that even though I love Zelda.

It's Zelda, you can't let the puzzles get to you. Some of it is redundant, because you're supposed to be in that state of mind where you like a slow pace. That's what I love the most about Zelda. If you have to do it over again, do it over again. It shouldn't matter, because literally the exprience of playing it is it's own reward.

I have no problem trying to solve the puzzles, its fun and rewarding, its the time limit thing that I hate. but yeah from looking at the guide I'll probably be going to that stupid temple 8 more times!

btw I only use the guide when I get stuck on a certain part, I don't sit there and play through the whole thing with the guide

Weapon: Air Rifle
Get treasure map hunting. Treasure chest often contain golden sand for your hour glass.

And don't waste time in there. If you're thinking about a puzzle or waiting for a phantom to pass, stand in the protective auras.

Gold and red pots are your friends.

Don't bother the phantoms. You can kill them later on; but unless you've got pit control switches or control of other booby traps, leave them be.

I know about all that, and yeah it helps but it still doesn't take away from the fact that the temple of the Ocean King just isn't fun period. Its the part of the game that seems more like a chore than fun. Prior to my most recent visit i had to try to figure out how to get to the northern sea, then I had to figure out how to get into the temple, then after I was in I had to try to figure out how to get aorund it, then I had to figure out how to fight the boss. That was all fun. But then you add some indestructible foes that you have to some how just avoid, and a time limit, and the redundancy of playing the same level 200 times in one game... yeah that level sucks, no way around it.

The Temple of the Ocean king just sucks.

It's a shame you don't like it.

I love the temple meself, and often finish it in about 3 minutes 30.

Oh, and a tip for when you get the phantom sword- which should be soon from the sound of it. Just stab the phantoms in the back with it. They'll die quickly, and you'll be rewarded with treasure.

I kinda wish they'd add a few more timed dungeons. I enjoy a challenge.

The thing that bugs me the most is that you paid for a walkthrough, when there are loads on the net for nothing.

Yeah it can be confusing (and frustrating), but thats the whole point, you would be complaining if it was too easy, they did the best they could to make Phantom Hourglass one of the best hand-held Zelda games.

You can use some of your weapons to stun the Phantoms for a bit, which helps, and there is more that one way to make your way through the Temple.

And its explained in the game why you can't just turn the Hourglass over, and why you can't kill the Phantoms, it pays to watch the cut-scenes.

And remember, its only a game :P

There are millions on the net for free no doubt, but sometimes the internet isn't accessible where I'm playing the game, and the book has more detail, ie maps and many more pictures than almost any guide you can get on-line. I typically go to guides.ign.com when I get stuck in a game.

I've played the game over a couple of times now and I still keep finding shortcuts in the temple, when you get a new weapon try going again from the start to see if you can use it to find a shortcut, and I've found if you power your sword using the one of the spirits you can stun the phantoms for a bit too (this only works if you still have the regular one, the Phantom sword will just kill them).

Arrows to the back will also stun phantoms. I've a sneaking suspicsion that boomerang will stun them, but I've never tried.

It's just ship part collecting for me now. Since I find that boring, I've stopped playing it for a bit. In a month or so I'll wipe my mode and start again.

Exactly. Printed strategy guides are about as useful nowadays as a newspaper; why pay money and a trip ot the store when you can get it online for free? Hell, I can literally open FireFox and have AP news stare me down.

Is you're point that it's okay to say something blatantly insulting to us gamers as long as you've accepted that our hobby isn't all that important to you?

Because that's what I'm getting.

What!!

Thats not at all what I'm saying, i love gaming and i know how important it is to people, i just know when to stop taking the game personally thats all, its ok to get involved in a game, but when it starts to piss you off every time you play it and makes the rest of your life miserable, its a good idea to stop playing it for a while, games are meant to be entertaining, for fun, when they stop being fun then that does no good.

I am in no way trying to insult anyone, just trying to express myself and if what i said has made you, or anyone else upset, then I'm sorry, but really its nothing to go getting all riled up about.

It's not something anyone can just do. I say it again, that's just you. Not everyone has the same mindset as you, and not everyone can grasp things during frustration put on by an exceptionally difficult game.

The only time I can do that is when I want to break the controller, before I realize that it's a PSP, and, thus, the screen is built in, and that I paid $170 for it.

Which...I guess was the point I was trying to get across earlier. I think best when I've been awake for too long.

Well ok, but its not something that I could always just do, i used to throw my GBC at times, or just squeeze it to the point where i could hear the plastic cracking!

It just took me a while to realize i didn't have to get that pissed off, and I'm sure that others could realize it too.

I tried that, but it just makes them look around, and on the map it shows a "?" above their head. (or is it a "!"?) It's fun just to do this repeatedly, just to confuse them. (I wonder if you do it too many times, they would go crazy and kill themselves  )

So a list of things that will stun a Phantom (and Replings):-
-Arrows
-Bombs
-Bombchus
-Using a Spirit's power

Also a tip i found on a walkthrough is to stay in a safe zone and use the hammer to lure the phantoms near you, then you can stun them, or kill them, this is good to use if your trying to speed through the temple.
