Pictorial Review: Transformers Generations Legends Class Optimus Prime with Roller

Site sponsor Kapow! Toys has provided us with a great pictorial review of the new Transformers Generations Legends Class Optimus Prime with Roller. The figure brings loads of articulation to the table for it's size, and Roller pulls triple-changing duties as a vehicle, robot, and weapon. Check out the images and review below.

Coming in at the Commander class size scale Optimus is based on the IDW Comics design and is pretty awesome thanks to this. I've really enjoyed the last 24 hours with these little guys, far more than any Legends style figure I've owned before. The main figure is nice and solid and features a good level of articulation along with a solid transformation.

Both truck and robot mode are a success with the only grumble being about the constantly closing chest section and some clearance issues with the backpack created by moving the wheels up. Roller is basic but does his job, he doesn't really transform from truck to robot more than stand up but when it comes to the weapon mode he has a neat little folding mechanism which requires a gentle pull to change him into Optimus Primes double barreled cannon. He is too heavy for Optimus to wield comfortably in robot mode but these are primarily made for kids who will love them, the play value is huge and I think the fact you get 2 robots in the set makes it well worth picking up if your a parent or collector.

Overall Optimus & Roller score a mighty 8/10

Optimus looks good. I'll probably skip BB (a Hot Shot repaint/remold might be enticing though), but almost definitely getting Prime. Hopefully there's more to come in this little line (some cons would be nice, and some actual large robots that would look good as Commanders like Ultra Magnus vs BB). And I guess that confirms this OP being Commander class rather than Legion (in hindsight it probably did look a little too good to be a Legion).

Looking forward to the Bee review, this looks better than I was expecting, but I don't know if I'll pick it up, as much as I like Prime and Roller.

For curiosity's sake, why do you like the design so much? I collect Primes, and I'm not really a fan of it... The whole upper torso is just SO wide compared to everything below his Chest-windows. It's not just a weird look for Prime, it's a weird look for ANYTHING, just to clarify that I'm not complaining got the sake if it being different. In fact, I love different styles' takes of different characters. (I'm probably one of the few of us who enjoys the movie designs for that very reason)

I've never had a legend/cyberverse toy, but this one looks promising, and I want to try the stuff. I don't really get you're arguement at all. I think this prime looks awesome and will work perfectly with the metroplex due out this fall. You have your opinion, I have mine, don't make this a troll thread.

Looks pretty good for a Cyberverse Commander figure, but I don't need to get it. Henkei Prime is still the iconic Classics Prime for me.

I'm not trying to, just fishing for a reasonable argument in favor of the slightly weird proportions. *shrug*

With as much effort, and as AWESOME as this little figure is, I wish they would have done something with the feet in truck mode.

I think this guy looks amazing for a legends. And at long last, they're making a small figure with good articulation. Now if they did this with figures that scale well with my collection I'll be happy. Actually, maybe Bee will fit with WFC/FoC.

You...you DO realize they've been doing that for awhile, right? Did you glaze over the entire Dotm and Prime Commander lines? The only difference, articulation wise, bewteen this Optimus and Prime Commander Optimus is balljointed knees vs hinge knees.

Edit: Okay, -technically- Prime Commander Optimus has a double-swivel for shoulders, but the range of motion is equal to that of a ball joint. I figured I'd mention it so nobody calls me out on it, but there's no functional difference between the two, really.

I collect Primes too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW4L-45idLI and I think this Optimus looks pretty cool in bot mode. I'm not really diggin' the alt mode (visible feet and "shoulder pads" should be more forward on the cab) but I think it's awesome for a legends class figure. I'm definitely picking this up.

I wish we could get a Voyager version of this. Classics Prime is good but it lacks that new, fresher look that the RTS line had and Generations line looks to be getting back.

Again, this one is the best, I think some of us are blown away. I think he thought this one purely epic, and was one of the first that got his attention

I like it. In fact, I like it better than that little legends G1 Prime we recently got. The wide upper torso can probably be solved by pushing the two halves back together. I think they were just going for a presenting the Matrix kind of thing with the seperating upper chest panels.

Commander class figures for ROTF were good, but when they downsized to Cyberverse they seemed to stop giving them neck joints. I figure that can't look anywhere but straight ahead has very limited poseability.

He's a cute lil guy but I'd be more interested in a Motorbreath repaint. Optimus as a warrior doesn't do anything for me.

1) ROTF still had the Scout class.
1) Dotm CV Commanders and Prime CV Commanders are the same size. (not necessarily an error you made, but I'm pointing it out anyway)
2) There are some Commander class figures that have a neck, Prime Commander Optimus Prime and Bulkhead, for example, though you're right in saying quite a few don't that really should.

Also, none of the Dotm Commanders that I know of have neck joints (I think Guzzle -might-, someone is welcome to confirm or deny that).

Guzzle doesn't have any neck articulation
