Pleasant Surprise

Motto: "I wanna boot some Decepticon right in his turbocharger!"
Weapon: Glass Gas Gun
Has anyone else been surprised by the quality and/or play value of a Transformer, from any generation that you were initially unimpressed with? My most recent surprise is the movie Ironhide. I was very unimpressed with the toy, but when I got him I thought he was terrific! Just a great toy all around. The automorph gimmick is fantastic.

I had a good time with his automorph too. I just dont like how skinny he is.

I never liked Beast Wars toys until a few months ago, picked a few up and was quite impressed with them, others not so much, but that goes with any line.

good question i am just unimpressed with the movie toys paint i mean not realistic or mettalic paint is fine but at least no slops, smudges and no paint that passes though other surfaces and not fading that fast...

Unfortunately, American kids aren't as picky about paint apps as Japanese children are. Generally the Takara versions have better paint applications (not always, there are a few US releases that are better) but these cost much more than their US counterparts. You are better off just looking over the figure while in package, pick out the best of them there and hope the sloppy paint isn't on parts that are visible in bot mode. Until American kids get pickier this won't change because the TF collector market is too small and almost every line will be targeted for kids.

I think leader OP from the movie is phenomenally durable when transforming.

I actually totally hated Barricade until I actually got him home and transformed, then my opinion completely turned around. Now he's one of my favorites easily. Deluxe Jazz as well. Seeing him online did nothing for me, but actually having him in hand made me really like him in robot mode.

Outside of the movie toys. Alternators Rollbar has become one of my favorite Alternators for no particular reason other than something just kind of clicked with me. One of these days I need to pick up another one to slap those Reprolabel Tantrum labels on...

Movie Scorponok was a pleasant surprise. I just had to forget he even had a "bot" mode if you can even call it that.

Well I personally had worries that my 74 Bumblebee would turn out broken for the Automorph but it turned out all good so that is a surprise. The first time I saw Unleashed Bumblebee was at K-Mart, and I thought it looked really dumb and stupid... but then I took a closer look and said to myself hmm this might be good detailed, it was hard to determine. Then I had a real strong feeling I would like him and mum said yes he seems very nice and decent... he is the type of thing for my age that is. So I got him and never stopped looking at him in th car... and when I got home... I was surprised to see that I was correct in my own opinion... he is a good sculpture indeed

Paint apps on the new figures are sloppy, and I'm dissapointed in the quality of the plastic.

I'd have to say I like the Beast Wars line. Well, the transmetal paints does tend to flake off, but I think they're great otherwise.

I know a lot of people dismiss they, but the G1 theme alone made me love my Cyber Stompin' Bumblebee. And it proved great fun for tormenting the puppy. =D

Movie Starscream is a BIG one for me. I remember showing him to my fiancee, and telling her "Oh, he doesn't even look all that great". I heard good feedback from people I trusted, wandered all over OKC looking for him, and when I got him, I was not disappointed. The best Automorph out of anyone, I think.

Energon Sixshot is another one I didn't think too highly of, until I owned him. He's a really fun figure.

And I remember as a kid how disappointed I was when I got G1 Bumblebee... until I had a chance to play with him. Simple figure, but man, I loved that thing.

I was very pleasantly surprised when I realized that they tried hard to give all the Classics cars actual driver compartments or at least seats.

I've been quite surprised with many of my G1 toys. Kup in particular. I've always liked the character, but I always heard the toy was bad. When I finally got him I was totally flabergasted. I love that toy! I really would love to see a Masterpiece Kup.
